Designer Jet® is GH Commercial’s custom carpet technology for turning artwork into bespoke floor coverings. Its clearest documented use is Spectra, an immersive exhibition at Rydges Melbourne during Melbourne Design Week 2025, where paintings by Rowena Martinich were translated into carpet through precision dye injection. The project shows how a floor can become part of an artwork and an interior’s visual identity, while also making clear that project photography and supplier descriptions are not substitutes for independent technical testing.

What Designer Jet® technology is
Designer Jet® is described by GH Commercial as custom carpet technology for bespoke designs. Rather than selecting a repeating pattern from a standard catalogue, a project team can start with an original visual source—such as a painting—and develop a carpet intended for a particular interior.
The documented production method is precision dye injection into carpet. That description explains the essential creative link: colour and imagery from a two-dimensional artwork can be transferred into a textile floor surface. The available project material does not establish a complete machine specification, maximum resolution, fibre construction, colour-count limit, warranty, acoustic rating, slip rating or wear result. Those details must be confirmed for each proposed installation.

In practical terms, Designer Jet® belongs to the custom commercial-carpet category. Its value in the Spectra project was not presented as a generic promise that every carpet will perform identically. It was used to make a specific artistic concept part of a specific hotel lobby.
How Spectra used custom carpet as part of the artwork
Rydges Melbourne hosted Spectra from May 15 to 25, 2025, as part of Melbourne Design Week 2025. The exhibition treated the hotel lobby as an immersive setting rather than a neutral corridor or waiting area. The reported installation combined several media:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Artist-designed carpets made with Designer Jet® Custom Carpet.
- Large-scale paintings by Rowena Martinich and Geoffrey Carran.
- A window installation.
- Limited-edition prints.
- A 12-metre custom wallpapered wall.
Martinich’s paintings supplied the visual source for the bespoke carpets. The flooring therefore did more than coordinate with the artwork by colour. It brought the visual language of the paintings down into the path of visitors and into the surface that occupied the centre of the lobby.
GH Commercial Brand Manager Abby Peach described the result this way: “Designer Jet® technology allowed us to translate these large-scale, dynamic paintings into intricate, textural floor pieces.” The wording is a project participant’s description, not an independent laboratory assessment of texture or image fidelity.

Designer Jet® was one element in a coordinated art-and-design intervention.

Why putting art on the floor changes a commercial interior
It extends the artwork into circulation
A painting normally occupies a wall and is viewed from a set distance. A carpet occupies the route people take through a space. When the visual source is translated into flooring, visitors encounter the design while entering, queuing, sitting or moving between parts of the building. That changes the artwork’s position in the room without requiring the floor to be treated as a framed picture.

It connects horizontal and vertical surfaces
Spectra placed paintings, wallpaper and carpet in the same lobby. This creates an opportunity for a visual rhythm across walls, windows and floor planes. The important design task is not to copy a painting mechanically, but to decide which colours, gestures or forms should remain legible when the image is viewed from above and at walking distance.
It makes a brand or venue feel specific
A bespoke floor can be developed for one address, event or cultural programme instead of being selected from a widely used pattern range. In the Spectra example, the carpet helped Rydges Melbourne present its lobby as a temporary exhibition environment. That is a project-level observation; it is not evidence that custom carpet automatically improves every hotel, office, retail space or public building.

It adds material presence to a digital-looking image
Precision dye injection transfers imagery into a textile surface rather than leaving it on a screen or paper print. Peach referred to the resulting pieces as “intricate, textural floor pieces.” Whether a particular design feels richly textured, sharply detailed or deliberately abstract will depend on the carpet construction, colour selection, scale and viewing conditions specified for that project.
How an art-led carpet commission should be developed
The Spectra example does not publish a universal production recipe. A useful commission process therefore begins with decisions that can be documented and approved before manufacturing.
- Define the spatial purpose. Decide whether the carpet is intended as a lobby focal point, a wayfinding element, a quiet background, a temporary exhibition component or a permanent feature. The purpose determines how much visual complexity the floor can carry without competing with circulation and signage.
- Select and clear the artwork. Confirm the artist, image rights, permitted adaptations, colour adjustments and installation locations. A painting may need to be cropped, repeated, rotated or divided into separate carpet fields; those changes should be approved before artwork preparation.
- Map the image to the floor plan. Mark doors, furniture, lift approaches, queues and high-traffic paths on the artwork. A beautiful section can disappear beneath a reception desk, while a strong contrast may land exactly where people need clear visual guidance.
- Request a production specification. Ask GH Commercial or another qualified commercial-carpet supplier to state the proposed carpet construction, dye-injection method, available substrates, colour-management process, edge treatment and installation method. The available Spectra reporting does not supply these specifications.
- Approve physical samples. Review a representative strike-off or sample at the intended scale and under the project’s lighting. Screen colours, paper proofs and phone displays cannot establish how the final textile will look.
- Coordinate the surrounding finishes. Set the relationship between carpet, paint, wallpaper, glazing, furniture and lighting. Spectra used a 12-metre wallpapered wall and glass-based vinyl installations alongside its carpets; that kind of coordination should be drawn into the interior package rather than left to site decisions.
- Plan installation and protection. Establish delivery sequencing, storage, seam locations, access restrictions, temporary protection and the point at which the finished carpet can be exposed to public traffic.
- Record maintenance requirements. Obtain cleaning methods, stain-response instructions, replacement procedures and any restrictions on chemicals or equipment in writing. Do not infer maintenance performance from the exhibition account.
Questions to ask before specifying Designer Jet® carpet
The project documentation identifies the creative application but does not publish comparative performance data. A commercial brief should therefore make the unanswered questions explicit.
Design and image handling
- What image dimensions and file formats are accepted?
- How are gradients, transparency, fine lines and painterly edges handled?
- Can the design be tiled across multiple carpet pieces without visible disruption?
- How are colours converted from the artist’s original medium to the selected carpet?
- What approval sample represents the final production process?
Carpet construction and site use
- Which fibre, backing and pile options are available for the intended interior?
- What traffic classification and installation conditions apply to the proposed product?
- How are seams, transitions, corners and irregular shapes resolved?
- Can the carpet be replaced in sections if one area is damaged?
Operations and maintenance
- What daily and periodic cleaning regime is recommended?
- Which spot-cleaning products are approved?
- How will colour and image legibility be inspected over time?
- What documentation will the facilities team receive at handover?
Programme, budget and sustainability
- What are the artwork-approval, sampling, manufacturing and installation lead times?
- Which costs are separate from the carpet itself, including artwork preparation, freight, site protection and installation?
- What environmental declarations, recycled-content information, take-back options or end-of-life guidance are available for the specified construction?
These are procurement questions, not published answers about Designer Jet®. The retrieved project accounts do not state a price, lead time, durability result, sustainability certification or performance comparison.

What the Spectra account establishes—and what it does not
Established by the project reporting
- Designer Jet® is associated with GH Commercial and is presented as custom carpet technology.
- The technology was used for artist-designed carpets in Spectra at Rydges Melbourne.
- The reported production description is precision dye injection into carpet.
- Spectra ran from May 15 to 25, 2025, during Melbourne Design Week 2025.
- The lobby installation included paintings, a window installation, limited-edition prints and a 12-metre custom wallpapered wall.
Not established by the available material
- Independent testing of image resolution, colourfastness, abrasion resistance or slip performance.
- A comparison with other digital carpet-printing or textile-decoration technologies.
- Pricing, minimum order quantities, production capacity or standard lead times.
- General sustainability performance for every Designer Jet® carpet construction.
- A guarantee that results achieved for an exhibition lobby will transfer unchanged to another building type.
This boundary is important for architects, interior designers and venue operators. Spectra is persuasive evidence that a custom carpet can participate in an art-led spatial concept. It is not a substitute for a project-specific specification, sample review or compliance check.
How artists and designers shared the spatial idea
The project’s quoted participants describe a shared ambition. Rydges Melbourne General Manager Lee Davey called Spectra “a vibrant celebration of creativity that transformed our lobby into a living, breathing work of art.” Artist Geoffrey Carran said: “It was a chance to show how art can inhabit space in new and unexpected ways, making it an integral part of the built environment.”
Those statements clarify the curatorial intent: the lobby was treated as an inhabitable composition, not simply decorated with framed pieces. The carpet supported that intent by occupying the built surface people physically crossed. It also shows why authorship and collaboration matter. The artist’s work, the venue’s programme, the carpet supplier’s production process and the printer’s contribution to adjacent elements all formed part of the finished experience.
Where this approach can be appropriate
An art-derived carpet may suit a hotel lobby, gallery entrance, cultural venue, headquarters reception, hospitality setting or branded event space when the client wants the floor to carry a distinctive narrative. It can be especially useful where a project has an original artwork, a local artist relationship or a defined visual identity that standard broadloom patterns cannot express.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
It may be less appropriate when the floor must remain visually quiet, when furniture layouts change frequently, when the image would be hidden by fixtures, or when the client cannot commit to sampling and maintenance planning. A custom image also introduces responsibilities that a generic pattern may avoid: permissions, colour approval, replacement matching and agreement about how the artwork may be cropped or altered.
A practical decision framework
Choose an art-led custom carpet when all of the following are true:
Recommended Free Tools
- The floor has a clear role in the project’s story or visitor experience.
- The artwork owner and design team agree on adaptation rights.
- The supplier can demonstrate the proposed construction with a physical sample.
- Traffic, cleaning, installation and replacement requirements are documented.
- The budget and programme allow for custom development rather than catalogue selection.
Pause the commission if any of those conditions is unresolved. The strongest lesson from Spectra is not that every commercial floor should become a canvas. It is that flooring can be treated as a designed, authored surface when the artistic concept, technical specification and operational plan are developed together.
What Designer Jet® demonstrates
In Spectra, Designer Jet® connected Rowena Martinich’s paintings with the floor of Rydges Melbourne’s lobby, alongside work by Geoffrey Carran and a broader installation of wallpaper, windows, prints and large-scale art. Precision dye injection made the carpet part of that visual system rather than a background finish. For future projects, the transferable idea is the workflow: begin with the artwork and spatial purpose, test the translation in a physical sample, specify the carpet for its actual use, and document the limits instead of assuming that one exhibition proves universal performance.
