Microsoft Designer’s web-based Restyle Image let you upload a photo, choose a visual style, and describe customizations, but Microsoft says that feature was no longer available from February 1, 2025. Microsoft now documents separate Restyle features in Photos and Paint, with different device and availability limits; neither is established as an identical replacement for the retired web workflow.
If you want to change the style of an existing photo, check whether Photos Restyle Image is available on your Copilot+ PC, or verify the current rollout of Paint Restyle for your device. Microsoft’s other Designer editing options may help with edits, but its documentation does not confirm that they reproduce the old Restyle workflow.
What was Designer Restyle Image?
Designer Restyle Image was a web-based, image-to-image feature. You uploaded a photo, selected a visual style such as pop art, flat illustration, papercraft, or stylized 3D, and could describe additional customizations.
That made it different from a conventional filter: it generated a new interpretation of the photo, rather than simply applying a predictable effect to the original pixels. As with generative image tools generally, a transformed result may not preserve every detail exactly.

Microsoft’s feature announcement describes the original workflow and styles. Its update says the Designer feature was no longer available from February 1, 2025.

Microsoft also lists “restyle” among functions on its current Designer product page, alongside other image-editing functions. That page does not establish the exact availability or behavior of the former standalone web Restyle Image feature. Its free plan uses monthly AI credits.
How to check Photos Restyle Image
- Open the photo in Microsoft Photos on a Copilot+ PC.
- Select Edit image, then look for Restyle Image.
- Choose a preset or enter a custom text description, then adjust creativity if the control is available.
- Review the result carefully before saving or sharing it.
Microsoft says Photos uses a Sketch-to-Image model for Restyle Image; Image Creator is a distinct Text-to-Image feature. Microsoft also says that when a photo has prominent foreground faces, an on-device model detects faces and applies the style only to the background. If no faces are detected, the style is applied to the whole image.

Microsoft says no identifiable biometric data is collected, processed, or stored for that face-detection behavior. It also says users must be online and signed in with a Microsoft account for cloud safety services, and that prompts and model responses are collected for safety investigation under Microsoft’s privacy statement. Microsoft says image content credentials based on C2PA are implemented.
Microsoft’s Photos FAQ says Photos AI features are temporarily unavailable in South Korea while Microsoft updates the service for local requirements, and remain available in other supported regions. The FAQ does not provide a complete list of supported regions, so check Microsoft’s current documentation for your location.
What to know about Paint Restyle
Microsoft announced Paint Restyle on October 22, 2025, for Windows Insider Canary, Dev, and Beta channels. The announcement described selecting a preset style from Paint’s Copilot menu, generating an image, then adding it to the canvas, copying, or saving it. At announcement, Microsoft specified Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs and Microsoft account sign-in.

Those are announcement-era details, not proof that Paint Restyle is now available to all Windows users. Check Microsoft’s current Paint information and your device’s eligibility before planning a workflow around it.

How to write better restyling instructions
For tools that accept a text description, name the subject, medium, palette, and details you want preserved. Be specific about composition and avoid treating “preserve” as a guarantee.
Example: “Restyle this photo as a watercolor illustration. Keep the building’s roofline, windows, and surrounding trees recognizable, with a muted blue-and-green palette. Do not add text or new objects.”

Generate and inspect the result before using it publicly. Faces, hands, patterns, background details, and text may change during restyling.
Choosing a current workflow
Start with the task you need to do, then check the current product documentation rather than assuming that a feature with the same name works the same way as Designer’s retired web tool.
- Want to restyle an existing photo: Check Photos Restyle Image on a Copilot+ PC, including account, internet, and regional availability requirements.
- Want preset styles in Paint: Check the current Paint rollout and device requirements; Microsoft’s announcement described an Insider-channel feature for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.
- Need other edits from Photos: Edit with Designer may offer crop, filters, text, background actions, and other editing tools, but Microsoft does not describe it as the old Restyle workflow.
- Considering a third-party service: Verify that it edits uploaded photos, offers the style controls you need, and supports your location and export requirements. Review image retention, training, privacy, and commercial-use terms before uploading.
Privacy and output checks
- Review the provider’s data-handling terms before uploading private, family, or confidential images.
- Check account, internet, device, regional, language, and usage-credit requirements.
- Inspect faces, products, logos, text, and other important details; do not assume they will remain exact.
- Check export options and usage rights before using results in commercial work.
- Label substantially restyled images when viewers could otherwise mistake them for unaltered photographs.
FAQ
Is Designer Restyle Image still available?
No. Microsoft’s update to its Designer announcement says the web feature was no longer available from February 1, 2025.

What app has a photo restyle feature now?
Microsoft documents Restyle Image in Photos for Copilot+ PCs and announced a separate preset-based Restyle feature in Paint for certain Insider channels and devices. Their availability and behavior differ from the retired web feature; check current requirements for your device.
Can Photos Restyle Image use a custom description?

Does Microsoft Photos change faces when restyling?
