Dark interiors with Blum means carrying a dark finish into the inside of cabinets and drawers as well as onto visible fronts—or using dark fittings as a deliberate contrast against pale doors. Blum documents this approach through onyx-black hinges, dark LEGRABOX drawer systems and dark AVENTOS lift-system options. The right specification depends on the cabinet application, door geometry, opening behavior and availability in your market, not on a finish name alone.
For a coherent scheme, decide first whether you want visual continuity or contrast. Then specify the hinge, drawer box or lift mechanism for each cabinet type, confirm the exact product number with your cabinetmaker, and check regional stock before ordering. Blum presents these products as design choices; its published pages do not establish that every configuration is sold in every country or that a particular finish fits every cabinet.

What “dark interiors” means in a Blum kitchen or furniture project
A dark interior is the part of a cabinet that is normally seen only when a door or drawer opens: hinge arms and covers, drawer-box sides, lift-system components and sometimes the interior carcass itself. In a fully coordinated scheme, the fronts, exposed edges and internal fittings share a dark family of tones. In a contrast scheme, light fronts are paired with dark hardware so the fitting becomes a considered detail.
This is different from simply painting a room a dark colour. Wall and ceiling paint still affect daylight, reflected colour and perceived depth, but the Blum specification concerns the furniture. A white or oak kitchen can therefore have a dark interior, and a dark-painted room can have light cabinetry with black fittings.

Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
Blum’s design-trends material shows both approaches: dark surfaces can continue a dark concept through the furniture, or provide a counterpoint to lighter materials. Its design and furniture trends overview and dark-surfaces guide are inspiration and product references from the manufacturer, not independent testing of a complete kitchen scheme.
Choose the visual strategy before choosing the fitting
Tonal continuity: a dark cabinet inside and out
Use this approach when the open cabinet should read as one quiet, architectural volume. Dark fronts, a dark carcass or shelf, black hinges and a dark drawer box reduce the number of visible colour changes. It is especially effective on tall units, appliance garages and open shelving where the interior remains in view for long periods.
- Match undertone as well as lightness. A blue-black fitting can look cooler than a brown-black timber or warm charcoal laminate.
- Control sheen. A matt drawer box beside a high-gloss front will still look intentionally different, but it will not be a seamless colour field.
- Plan lighting. Dark interiors absorb more light, so LED strips, interior lighting or a lighter rear panel may be needed for practical visibility.
Contrast: dark fittings against light fronts
Contrast is useful when you want the hardware to be noticed at the edge of a pale door or inside a light timber cabinet. Onyx black hinges can make a white, cream or natural-wood front look more graphic without requiring every internal panel to be dark. The same idea works with a light stone worktop, pale oak or a painted colour with a warm undertone.
- Repeat the dark note elsewhere—such as a tap, handle, lighting track or furniture leg—so the hinge does not look accidental.
- Decide how much of the fitting is visible when the door is closed. A concealed hinge may reveal only a small dark area; a lift mechanism can be more noticeable above an eye-level door.
- Use physical samples where possible. Black finishes with different textures can appear identical in a catalogue but separate clearly in daylight.
| Design decision | Continuity effect | Contrast effect | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front and interior colour | Dark front, dark carcass and dark fittings read as one volume | Light front or interior makes the fitting a visible accent | Compare undertone and sheen under the project lighting |
| Best applications | Tall units, display areas and drawers seen open | Light kitchens, timber furniture and selected feature cabinets | Map which fittings are visible in normal use |
| Main risk | The opening can become visually heavy or hard to see into | Unrelated blacks can look like a mismatch | Use samples and repeat the chosen dark tone elsewhere |
Which Blum products provide dark interiors?
The documented families cover the three fitting groups most likely to be visible in use: hinges, drawer boxes and lift systems. The table separates the published finish names from the application decisions you still need to make.
| Application | Blum family and documented dark finish | What it contributes | Availability and fit note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hinges | CLIP top BLUMOTION and other CLIP top hinge types in onyx black | A dark hinge cup/arm detail with integrated soft-close on BLUMOTION versions | Blum’s US page lists standard, thick/profile-door and blind-corner forms; choose by actual door and cabinet geometry |
| Drawer boxes | LEGRABOX in terra black matt, carbon black matt and a carbon-look special edition | Dark drawer sides that remain visible when the drawer is open | Confirm the exact drawer system, dimensions and regional finish offering with the cabinetmaker |
| Lift systems | AVENTOS top in eclipse black; AVENTOS HKi in onyx black | Dark lift-system hardware for upward-opening doors | AVENTOS top was announced for eclipse-black availability from mid-2026; verify current local stock and specification |
These finish names identify options within a family; they do not prove interchangeability. A hinge for a thick door, a blind corner or a particular overlay can require a different construction than a standard door. Drawer and lift systems likewise depend on cabinet dimensions, door weight and movement requirements.

Onyx-black Blum hinges: what to specify
Blum’s US overview of onyx black hinges describes CLIP top BLUMOTION and CLIP top options in the dark finish. The page identifies standard hinges, versions for thick or profile doors and blind-corner hinges among the available forms. Select the form from the cabinet geometry, then select the finish—not the other way around.
BLUMOTION behavior
BLUMOTION is Blum’s integrated soft-close feature. Blum says it can be deactivated for small or light doors, where the closing force may otherwise be excessive. Ask the installer to set or deactivate the mechanism according to the actual door size and weight, and test a representative door before fitting an entire run.
Geometry questions for the cabinetmaker
- Is the door standard, thick/profiled or part of a blind-corner arrangement?
- What overlay, opening angle and mounting-plate arrangement does the cabinet require?
- Will the hinge be visible against a light interior, and does its black tone need to match the drawer or lift system?
- Does the door need soft-close, and is the door light enough that deactivation should be considered?
Blum’s product page is a useful starting point, but the correct product number must be confirmed against the door construction and cabinet application. A black hinge with the wrong geometry is not a valid substitute for the correct hinge in a different finish.
Dark LEGRABOX drawer interiors
LEGRABOX is the drawer-box option in Blum’s dark-surface material. Blum describes terra black matt and a carbon-look special edition on its design-trends page; its dark-surfaces page identifies LEGRABOX in carbon black matt as well.
The practical effect is strongest when drawers are opened frequently. A dark side profile can align with dark fronts and a dark carcass, or it can frame a pale interior as a deliberate border. Because drawer sides are viewed at close range, compare the finish with the front edge, worktop and internal organizers rather than relying on a screen image.

How to choose between the documented looks
- Terra black matt: a restrained matt direction suited to a continuous, low-reflection scheme.
- Carbon black matt: the dark-surface option named by Blum for a clean black appearance.
- Carbon-look special edition: a more textured or material-referencing direction when the drawer should contribute visual character.
The pages do not establish a universal finish package for every LEGRABOX size or market. Have the supplier confirm the available side height, interior accessories, product number and lead time for your country and cabinet dimensions.
Dark AVENTOS lift systems
For upward-opening wall-cabinet doors, Blum’s dark-surfaces material identifies AVENTOS top in eclipse black and AVENTOS HKi in onyx black. AVENTOS HKi is an integrated lift system; AVENTOS top is a newer top-mounted family. Their mechanisms solve different cabinet situations, so the black finish does not make them interchangeable.
In an April 2026 release, Blum said AVENTOS top would be available in eclipse black from mid-2026. That is a dated manufacturer announcement. Since stock and launch timing can differ by country, check the current regional catalogue or distributor before putting eclipse black into a firm specification. The announcement is available at Blum’s April 2026 press release.
Questions to resolve before specifying a lift
- What are the door width, height, weight and material construction?
- Is the cabinet a standard wall unit, a special corner situation or an integrated application?
- How much opening clearance is available above and in front of the cabinet?
- Does the user need a particular stopping, opening or closing feel?
- Is the required eclipse-black or onyx-black version actually orderable in the project’s market?
A step-by-step specification workflow
- Define the intended effect. Write “tonal continuity” or “dark contrast” on the elevation and identify which surfaces must remain light.
- Make a cabinet application map. List hinged doors, drawers, lift-up doors, blind corners, thick or profiled doors and any feature units separately.
- Assign a Blum family to each application. Consider onyx-black CLIP top hinges for hinged doors, a dark LEGRABOX finish for drawers and the appropriate AVENTOS family for lift doors.
- Verify geometry and movement. Provide the cabinetmaker with door thickness, overlay, dimensions, weight and opening requirements. Ask for the exact product number and mounting configuration.
- Check finish samples. Compare black tones, matt levels and carbon textures beside the chosen front, carcass, worktop and paint under both daylight and artificial light.
- Confirm regional availability. Ask Blum or an authorized cabinet-hardware distributor whether the specific finish and configuration are currently sold in your country. Treat the mid-2026 AVENTOS top announcement as a starting point, not a stock guarantee.
- Order a representative mock-up. Test one door, one drawer and one lift door where possible. Check clearances, soft-close force, sightlines and the appearance of the dark hardware when opened.
- Record the final schedule. Keep product numbers, finish names, door constructions and adjustment notes with the cabinet drawings so replacements can match later.
Coordinating dark hardware with painted rooms and materials
On a painting-led project, treat the cabinet interior and the room colour as separate but interacting layers. A very dark wall can reduce the contrast that makes black hardware legible, while a pale wall can make the same fitting read as a crisp line. Sample the wall colour next to the cabinet door and open the door to see the hinge or drawer side in the actual light.
Recommended Free Tools
Warm neutrals, clay colours and muted greens can support a softer black; cool whites and blue-greys create a sharper graphic contrast. These are design decisions rather than Blum performance claims, so judge them in the room and at the time of day the kitchen is most used. If the interior is nearly black, specify practical task lighting and make sure shelf edges and drawer contents remain easy to find.

What current design reporting says—and what it does not
In its May 2026 Trend Report, Blum said its team observed darker timber, especially oak, often combined with stone and metal at Salone del Mobile and EuroCucina. This is a dated show observation by Blum, not a measured statistic about the entire furniture market. The report is at Blum Trend Report 2026.
Blum’s interior designer and trade-fair booth construction lead Mario Schmelzenbach described the colour direction this way: “The styles were dominated by warm, earthy tones like clay, terracotta, rust, rosé and aubergine. The colour pallet was grounded and organic, with a welcoming and homely atmosphere, rather than loud and in-your-face.” Use that quotation as context for palette development, not as proof that a particular dark fitting will suit every room.
Common specification mistakes and fixes
Assuming every “black” is the same
Onyx black, carbon black matt, terra black matt and eclipse black are distinct named finishes. Request samples and document the chosen finish for every fitting family.

Choosing by appearance instead of geometry
A standard hinge cannot automatically replace a thick/profile-door or blind-corner version. Recheck door construction, overlay and corner conditions before ordering.
Treating a launch announcement as universal availability
AVENTOS top eclipse black was announced for mid-2026, but regional stock and catalogue status can differ. Obtain written confirmation for the project location.

Overlooking closing behavior
Soft-close is part of the user experience. Test BLUMOTION on the actual door and ask whether deactivation is appropriate for a small or light door.
Making unsupported durability promises
The cited product pages establish design intent and product families; they do not provide independent testing that proves a universal level of finish durability. Follow the manufacturer’s care information and ask the supplier for documentation relevant to the specified finish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Dark drawer sides and cabinet interiors can look elegant but reduce contrast for stored items. Add lighting or a carefully chosen lighter interior surface where everyday visibility matters.
What to put in the final hardware schedule
- Cabinet identifier and application: hinged, drawer or lift-up.
- Blum family and exact product number.
- Finish name: onyx black, terra black matt, carbon black matt, carbon-look special edition or eclipse black, as applicable.
- Door or drawer construction, dimensions and weight information required for the mechanism.
- Soft-close requirement and any approved deactivation.
- Supplier confirmation of regional availability and lead time.
- Sample approval for colour, texture and sheen.
There are no universal prices in the cited material, so obtain a project-specific quotation rather than using an assumed allowance. If a finish is unavailable, preserve the design intent by deciding whether to change the fitting, the front, or the continuity-versus-contrast strategy—while keeping the mechanism compatible with the cabinet.
Bottom line
Blum provides a credible route to dark cabinet interiors: onyx-black CLIP top hinges for hinged doors, dark LEGRABOX drawer boxes and dark AVENTOS options for lift-up doors. Use them either to extend a dark material palette through the furniture or to set a controlled black accent against light fronts. The professional result comes from matching geometry, movement, finish and local availability—not from specifying “black” in isolation.
