Compact apartments work best when the plan starts with household tasks, appliance envelopes and service routes—not with a preferred cabinet arrangement. Record each appliance’s actual width, depth, height, door swing, ventilation requirement and connection points; reserve clear paths for loading and opening; then shape cabinetry and circulation around those facts. In parallel, decide whether laundry is an in-apartment function or a shared building amenity. Neither approach is universally superior: shared facilities can release dwelling floor area, while in-unit machines preserve privacy and immediate convenience.

Begin with tasks, not a floor-plan shape

Map the work the dwelling must support

A kitchen in a multi-residential dwelling may need to support cooking, eating, working, studying, entertaining, food storage, cleaning and appliance charging. A laundry may involve washing, drying, sorting, folding, linen storage and, in some buildings, shared clothes drying. List these activities for the intended households before drawing cabinets. Note when two activities happen at once—for example, one resident cooking while another uses a work surface for a laptop—because simultaneous use determines whether a narrow passage becomes a bottleneck.

  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Translate the list into physical actions: reach into a refrigerator, place a hot pan beside a cooktop, load a dishwasher, turn at a sink, open a washer door and carry a basket to a drying area. This task map is more reliable than assuming that a compact room needs a particular “standard” layout. The reviewed Australian sources do not establish a universal minimum kitchen or laundry size.

Set an appliance envelope before fixing cabinetry

Architecture & Design’s 2016 fridge-planning guidance says the kitchen plan should reflect how occupants use the room, account for the size and style of large appliances, and follow each manufacturer’s recommendations for air circulation and ventilation. Those recommendations vary by model, so a generic clearance number can be unsafe. Obtain the installation sheet for every selected or scheduled appliance and draw its full envelope, including doors, drawers, hoses, power points and ventilation zones.

Item to document Why it affects a compact plan What to verify
Overall width, depth and height Determines cabinet modules, benchtop length and passage width Current manufacturer specification, including feet, handles and trim
Opening path Doors and drawers can collide with a wall, island or opposing appliance Hinge side, drawer travel and required operating clearance
Ventilation and heat rejection Insufficient air movement can affect performance and cabinetry Model-specific installation and ventilation instructions
Services Late changes create bulkheads, inaccessible valves or exposed leads Water, waste, gas or electrical connection positions and access panels
Use sequence Places frequently paired appliances and landing surfaces logically How residents move food, cookware, dishes and laundry through the room

For integrated appliances, coordinate the appliance chassis, door panel, hinge geometry and adjacent fillers as one assembly. For freestanding equipment, retain enough tolerance for installation and future replacement without dismantling the room. Do not assume that an integrated model automatically saves space, energy or money; its benefit depends on the specific product and cabinet construction.

Use the work triangle as a check, not a rule

The same 2016 source presents the traditional relationship among cooktop/oven, refrigerator and sink as a planning concept. In a small apartment, trace that movement path after placing all other functions. A short route is useful only if doors do not intersect, hot and wet tasks have safe landing areas, and another resident can pass without crossing an active cooking zone. Where a triangle does not suit a linear or galley plan, test the actual sequence—store, prepare, cook, serve, clean—instead of forcing three points into a diagram.

Make the kitchen a multifunctional work area

Provide surfaces that can change jobs

A 2024 kitchen resource associated with a major Australian fixture supplier describes kitchens as places for work, study, entertaining and cooking. It identifies flexible work surfaces, smarter storage, multifunctional appliances, accessibility, convenience, productivity, energy efficiency and sustainability as design considerations. Treat those as coordination questions rather than promises of performance. A peninsula may serve as a breakfast counter and laptop desk, but it still needs a clear approach, a place for knees and a safe separation from hot equipment.

  • Give preparation a continuous landing surface beside the sink and cooking equipment where the plan permits.
  • Locate a work or study position so chair backs do not block the principal circulation route.
  • Use movable or foldable surfaces only when their hardware, support and storage position are documented.
  • Specify multifunctional appliances after checking capacity, controls, heat output and service access; “multifunctional” does not guarantee a smaller installation.

Coordinate light, air and visual clutter

Compact rooms magnify the effect of a blocked window, deep overhead cabinet or exposed appliance lead. Keep ventilation paths and service access visible on the coordination drawings. A simple rectangular plan can reduce unnecessary circulation; Tone Wheeler’s 2024 discussion of a three-storey walk-up scheme links that approach with cross-ventilated kitchens. It also describes shared clothes drying and laundry as part of a community-focused model. That is a project argument, not a code requirement or a measured performance result.

Design storage around reach and frequency

Put everyday items where residents can reach them comfortably

A 2024 ergonomic-storage resource from cabinet manufacturer Nover recommends keeping essential items within reach to reduce unnecessary bending, reaching and lifting. It presents a flap-and-folding-door mechanism, including the Salice Evolift system, as one product example. A related whitepaper search result discusses pull-out shelf mechanisms and concealed appliances or storage. These are options to evaluate, not prescriptions for every dwelling and not evidence of a guaranteed health outcome.

Make a frequency map: daily cookware and food should occupy the easiest-to-reach zones; occasional serving pieces can use higher or deeper storage; cleaning supplies need controlled access and separation from food. Pull-out shelves can expose the rear of a cabinet, but check load rating, fixing method, door overlap and the space required to operate the hardware. Concealed appliances can calm the visual field, yet they require ventilation, maintenance access and a panel that can be removed without damaging adjacent finishes.

Check storage with a full-size mock-up or digital reach study

Before construction, test the highest-use actions with a cardboard mock-up, sample cabinet or accurately dimensioned model. Open the refrigerator while standing at the sink; pull out the waste bin while another person passes; remove a heavy pan from its proposed shelf. Record conflicts and revise the cabinet module rather than asking residents to adapt to an awkward reach. The evidence supports evaluating these solutions for access and organisation; it does not quantify a universal “ergonomic” dimension.

Sequence the design work

  1. Define residents and routines. Identify household size, cooking frequency, work-from-home needs, entertaining, storage volume and laundry habits.
  2. List equipment. Create a schedule with model numbers where known, or conservative envelope dimensions where procurement is pending.
  3. Draw operating zones. Add door swings, drawer travel, loading positions, landing surfaces, ventilation areas and service access.
  4. Test the circulation path. Walk the store–prepare–cook–serve–clean sequence and a laundry basket route at the same time.
  5. Assign storage by frequency. Place daily items in the most accessible locations and verify pull-out or concealed hardware requirements.
  6. Resolve services. Coordinate plumbing, waste, electrical circuits, exhaust, isolation valves and access panels with the building engineer and relevant trades.
  7. Choose the laundry model. Compare in-unit and shared options against floor area, privacy, access, capacity and management responsibilities.
  8. Review documentation. Recheck every selected appliance’s current installation sheet and confirm applicable Australian codes and approvals before sign-off.

Choose between in-unit and shared laundry

Planning question In-unit laundry Shared laundry
Dwelling floor area Consumes part of the apartment’s service and circulation area Can release apartment floor area for living, storage or other uses
Resident convenience Immediate access and no trip through common areas Requires travel, scheduling and carrying loads to a common facility
Privacy and control Household controls timing and handling of clothing Use occurs in a communal setting with building rules and shared equipment
Building operations Many individual connections and maintenance points Fewer locations to service, but management must provide capacity, cleaning and access control
Design capacity Sized around the dwelling’s appliance and storage brief Must be assessed for resident numbers, peak demand, queuing and drying provision

When an in-unit laundry fits the brief

Compact equipment can work where the plan reserves a real service zone rather than squeezing a machine into leftover circulation. Confirm washer and dryer stacking requirements, door opening, vibration control, drainage, isolation, lint management and a place to sort or fold. A simple laundry near a central hallway is described in a Jervois Apartments project article, which also discusses wall-mounted ovens and drawer-style dishwashers intended to make access easier. These are project choices, not universal requirements or proof that one equipment type suits every resident.

Keep the laundry door from colliding with a bathroom, bedroom or kitchen work zone. If a machine is hidden behind joinery, show how a resident reaches the controls, removes filters and extracts the appliance for repair. Include a route for replacing it without removing fixed walls or stonework.

When shared laundry can release valuable apartment area

The Commons project article published in 2017 reports that the development removed individual laundries and washing machines as part of its housing model. The architects said in 2014, “At its core, The Commons is about people, not architectural form,” and described giving residents “space and height, light and air.” Those are the architects’ stated aims, not an independent evaluation of every shared-laundry outcome.

Nightingale 2.0’s project page identifies a completed 2018 project in Fairfield, Victoria, with 20 apartments. Its project description says a shared rooftop laundry removes the need for in-apartment laundries and machines and creates another point of incidental community engagement. Again, this demonstrates one operating model; it does not establish that shared laundry is always more space-efficient overall, more sustainable or preferred by residents.

If you select a shared facility, design the service as deliberately as an apartment kitchen. Calculate equipment capacity from the building brief, provide durable finishes and floor drainage, plan ventilation and acoustic separation, and locate sorting, folding and drying areas. Set clear hours, cleaning responsibilities, fault reporting and access arrangements. Explain the route from each dwelling, including stairs or lifts, weather exposure and the ability to carry a full basket safely.

Use compact fixture data carefully

An Everhard-associated Architecture & Design article from 2015 discusses 30-litre laundry bowls and reports compact Storm and Bold units measuring 395 mm wide by 570 mm deep by 870 mm high. Those figures describe particular products at that date, not a standard laundry module or a current specification. Verify availability, dimensions, plumbing requirements, cabinet clearances and installation instructions with the manufacturer before placing them in a current project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the dimensions as a coordination prompt: compare the measured available width, depth and height; allow for hoses, valves, door movement, benchtop thickness and maintenance access; then test whether the bowl and adjacent work surface support the intended tasks. A fixture that fits the nominal cavity may still fail when its lid opens or a resident needs to stand beside it.

Compare options with a project decision matrix

Decision Compare in the design review Evidence boundary
Integrated or freestanding appliance Dimensions, cabinetry fit, manufacturer clearances, ventilation, access and landing surface Clearance needs are model-specific; no universal values were established
Fixed or flexible/hidden storage Reach, frequency of use, countertop space, cabinet geometry and installation requirements Sources describe approaches but do not quantify performance
In-unit or shared laundry Floor area recovered, privacy, convenience, access, capacity and management Project examples demonstrate an option but do not prove suitability for every building
Compact laundry fixture Measured width, depth and height, bowl use, plumbing and current product specification The 2015 dimensions are a dated product example, not a design standard

Common failure points and practical fixes

  • Buying appliances after cabinetry is fixed: freeze the appliance schedule and installation sheets first, or design adjustable fillers and serviceable modules.
  • Using a generic ventilation gap: copy the selected model’s instructions into the coordination set and check how air actually moves around the enclosure.
  • Calling a narrow passage “circulation” without testing it: simulate open doors, a person carrying a basket and a second person working at the bench.
  • Putting daily items in deep or high cabinets: reorganise by frequency and evaluate pull-outs or concealed systems for load, fixing and maintenance.
  • Hiding a machine with no repair route: show removable panels, isolation points and an appliance-replacement path.
  • Assuming shared laundry has no spatial cost: count common-area travel, drying, storage, acoustics, ventilation, cleaning and management space.
  • Treating a supplier article as independent testing: label supplier-associated examples and avoid claims about health, energy, sustainability or resident preference that the evidence does not measure.
  • Relying on old product data: recheck the current model and applicable Australian requirements immediately before procurement.

Coordinate approvals and documentation

The available sources do not establish regulatory or accessibility dimensions. Ask the project’s building surveyor, services engineers and certifier to confirm the current requirements for ventilation, electrical work, wet areas, fire separation, acoustic treatment, waterproofing and accessible dwellings. Keep the final appliance schedule, manufacturer instructions, reflected ceiling and services drawings, joinery details and maintenance clearances together so a late substitution does not silently remove a required access or ventilation zone.

A compact plan succeeds when every square millimetre has a defensible job: a resident can perform the task, open the equipment, reach the stored item, move through the room and maintain the installation. Decide the laundry model at building level, but test its daily consequences at apartment level before committing to the layout.
