How does DeviantArt DreamUp work?
DeviantArt’s published workflow is to enter a prompt, select a visual style and available settings, then generate up to four images. Generated images are saved in DreamUp and Studio, where they can later be accessed or submitted as deviations.
- Open the DreamUp page while signed in to DeviantArt.
- Write a prompt describing the image you want. DeviantArt suggests starting with the subject and adding details such as style, mood, and background.
- Select a visual style and adjust available settings, which may include aspect ratio, prompt strength, or a negative prompt.
- Generate up to four options.
- Access the results later in DreamUp or Studio, or submit a selected image as a deviation.

Are DreamUp images labeled as AI?
DeviantArt says all submissions made using DreamUp are tagged #AIart and prominently labeled as DreamUp-generated. That statement covers DreamUp creations; it does not establish that images made with outside tools and uploaded later will be automatically identified as AI.
What should artists know about creator controls?
DeviantArt says creators can decide whether external AI models and platforms may train on their deviations. It also says artists can apply to opt out of having DreamUp generate images in their style, and that published DreamUp images should credit an artist when their style is used as inspiration.

What content is prohibited on DreamUp?
DeviantArt’s Help Center lists prohibited content including pornographic or obscene material, hateful or violent imagery, personal information, and offensive or sexualized images of public figures. It also says imagery inspired by other artists must clearly reference them when published. Policy violations may result in deletion or account suspension.
Who owns the copyright in a DreamUp image?
DeviantArt says copyright laws for AI generation are developing and vary by jurisdiction. Its statement that it passes copyright to users applies in jurisdictions where the DreamUp service is designated as the copyright holder. This is not a universal guarantee that every output is copyright-protected or that every user receives exclusive, enforceable rights.
