Yes—but not in the broad sense implied by “opt out of AI art generators.” DeviantArt lets artists signal that their uploaded work is not authorized for inclusion in third-party artificial-intelligence or machine-learning datasets. Under DeviantArt’s current policy, deviations are treated as opted out by default unless the creator affirmatively opts in.
That protection is meaningful, but it is not a technical switch that disables image generators, prevents downloads or screenshots, removes art from datasets that already copied it, or guarantees that every crawler will comply. The NoAI system is a combination of platform Terms, visible labeling, and machine-readable instructions for automated systems.
What DeviantArt’s NoAI setting actually does
DeviantArt’s current policy says uploaded deviations are not authorized for third-party AI-training datasets by default. The restriction covers more than model training: DeviantArt’s Terms address training artificial-intelligence and machine-learning systems, using work as input to an already-trained AI system, and creating derivative copies unless the downstream use is subject to equally restrictive conditions. The platform communicates this status with two machine-readable directives:

X-Robots-Tag: noainoimageai is associated with restricting image use for AI purposes, while noai is the broader AI-related signal. These instructions are intended for automated systems and third parties, but they are not encryption, digital rights management, or an impenetrable barrier.

Is the opt-out still enabled by default?
According to DeviantArt’s current materials, yes. All deviations are automatically treated as unauthorized for third-party AI datasets unless the creator chooses to opt in. That is different from some launch-era instructions and screenshots from November 2022, when the feature was new and its rollout caused confusion.

The original report was published on November 11, 2022. It is useful historical coverage, but current Help Center documentation and Terms should take precedence over old interface guides.
In practical terms, an artist generally does not need to take action to remain opted out under the current default. It is still worth checking older work and using the available controls if you want a visible NoAI label or need to change the status of specific deviations.
How to add or remove the NoAI label
For one deviation
- Submit a new deviation or edit an existing one.
- Find the option labeled Add NoAI label.
- Toggle the option to add or remove the label.
- Save or submit the deviation.
These steps are documented in DeviantArt’s NoAI setting Help Center article.
For multiple deviations in Studio
- Open Studio.
- Select the deviations using their checkboxes.
- Open Label options.
- Choose Add NoAI label or Remove NoAI label.
For a gallery or sub-gallery
- Open the gallery.
- Click Edit.
- Select the relevant deviations.
- Choose Label options.
- Select Add NoAI label or Remove NoAI label.
DeviantArt also says an entire gallery or sub-gallery can be edited through its three-dot menu. The All gallery can be used to change the setting across all deviations.

For future submissions
Studio presets can save label preferences for future submissions, including NoAI and Created with AI settings. That is useful if you want a consistent workflow rather than remembering the label each time you upload.
NoAI, Created using AI tools, and Suppress AI are different

What “Created using AI tools” means
DeviantArt says the disclosure applies when artwork is entirely AI-generated or primarily consists of AI-generated components. Its examples include an AI-generated portrait that was touched up and a story drafted with ChatGPT and then edited.
A work generally does not require the label when the main work is self-created and AI was used only for a small, insignificant element, such as a color palette or minor background component. DeviantArt says qualifying work offered for sale must be correctly labeled; failure to do so may lead to refunds or disciplinary action. The label is explained in the Help Center.
What “Suppress AI” does
This is a viewer-side browsing preference, not an artist opt-out. Open the avatar menu or go to Account Settings → AI Content, then choose Show AI or Suppress AI.

Suppress AI removes works labeled Created using AI tools and works that DeviantArt’s detection system identifies as likely AI-generated. DeviantArt warns that detection is imperfect: some AI content may remain visible, and non-AI work may occasionally be filtered. The setting does not apply to profiles, Watch pages, or directly linked deviation pages. See the AI-content browsing settings guide.

The most important limitation is that NoAI is an instruction and contractual restriction, not a technical lock. DeviantArt’s Terms say that users or automated systems that fail to respect the directives breach the Terms, but they also acknowledge several limitations:
- The directives may not be present every time content is accessed.
- Their absence does not imply consent.
- Third parties may still scrape or use the work.
- DeviantArt does not guarantee that external datasets will exclude the work.
- DeviantArt does not guarantee that it will pursue every unauthorized use.
Therefore, NoAI can reduce authorized or compliant use without making a public image impossible to copy. It does not stop a determined scraper from downloading an image, ignoring the directive, or taking a screenshot.

Nothing in the cited current materials promises that applying NoAI will purge an image from a dataset that already copied it or cause an already-trained model to be retrained. The safest interpretation is that the setting tells compliant downstream users not to collect or use the work going forward. It is not a guaranteed retroactive deletion mechanism.

It does not protect an entire artistic style
The mechanism identifies and restricts use of particular uploaded content. It does not create a universal ban on generating images “in the style of” an artist, using an artist’s name in a prompt, training on material found elsewhere, or producing similar-looking work from other sources.
DeviantArt’s position on its own AI tools
DeviantArt says it does not use submitted deviations to train third-party AI models, training sets, or its own DreamUp generator. That is a statement from DeviantArt and should be understood as such; it is not the same thing as proving that every external system has complied with NoAI.
At the same time, DeviantArt is not an anti-AI platform. It permits AI-generated submissions, requires disclosure for qualifying work, provides a viewer-side suppression setting, and continues to offer DreamUp image-generation features. Its policy is better described as AI-use disclosure plus creator controls than as a ban on AI art. DreamUp and other membership benefits are described on the Core Membership page.
A practical protection checklist for artists
- Check older work. Confirm the NoAI status of existing deviations rather than relying on an old screenshot or memory of the 2022 rollout.
- Use bulk editing. Studio and gallery tools can update many deviations at once.
- Save a preset. Store your preferred NoAI and AI-disclosure choices for future submissions.
- Keep originals. Preserve dated source files, layered documents, exports, and metadata that can help establish authorship.
- Consider public resolution. Lower-resolution previews can reduce the value of unauthorized copying, although they cannot prevent it.
- Monitor reposts. Watch for near-identical copies and use applicable platform reporting or takedown procedures.
- Use additional safeguards selectively. Provenance or image-protection tools may add another layer, but none should be treated as a guaranteed way to prevent AI training unless its specific claims are verified.
Does Core Membership make NoAI stronger?
Not according to the current policy and Help Center materials. NoAI is presented as a platform policy and is not described as a premium-only feature, so Core is not required merely to remain opted out.
Core may nevertheless interest artists who also want expanded DeviantArt Protect coverage, storage, bulk submission and scheduling tools, sales features, or DreamUp allowances. DeviantArt says Core members receive Protect alerts for all published submissions, while non-Core users receive Protect coverage for 90 days after submission. That is monitoring for potential infringements on DeviantArt; it is not a promise of universal web monitoring, AI-dataset removal, or legal enforcement.
Bottom line
DeviantArt gives artists a meaningful way to communicate and contractually assert that their work is not authorized for third-party AI training, and the current default is opt-out unless the creator opts in. But NoAI depends on compliant platforms and crawlers. It reduces authorized use; it does not make public images impossible to copy, erase past dataset inclusions, control every AI generator, or protect an artist’s style from imitation.
