Bottom line: The DeWalt Atomic 20V multi-head drill is the DCD803B, a brushless, tool-only drill/driver built around four interchangeable heads. The package includes a 1/2-inch metal chuck, a right-angle 1/4-inch hex head, an offset 1/4-inch hex quick-release head, and a straight 1/4-inch hex quick-release head. It does not include a battery or charger. Those items must be purchased separately for anyone who does not already use the DeWalt 20V MAX battery system.

For painters, remodelers and finish carpenters, the attraction is access: one motor can be configured for ordinary drilling, work inside tight corners, fastening close to an obstruction, or rapid use of 1/4-inch hex accessories. The available evidence establishes the configuration, compatibility and package contents, but not independent torque, runtime, balance, durability or speed results. Treat the four-head design as a versatility feature, not as a proven performance advantage.

What the DeWalt DCD803B actually is
DeWalt’s official product listing identifies the DCD803B as the ATOMIC 20V MAX Multi-Head Drill/Driver (Tool Only). It is a brushless cordless tool in the 20V MAX system. The listing names four supplied attachments and also confirms that the battery and charger are sold separately. See the official DCD803B product page for the current package description.

The four-head arrangement is not the same product as DeWalt’s DCD703F1. That catalog entry is a 12V MAX five-in-one brushless drill/driver kit. The model numbers, battery platform and package format are different. If a retailer or search result shows DCD703F1 while you are looking for a 20V four-head tool, you are looking at another model. DeWalt’s drill-driver catalog lists both identities separately: DeWalt drill-driver catalog.

The four attachments, explained
1. 1/2-inch metal chuck
The metal chuck is the conventional drilling and driving configuration. Its stated capacity is 1/2 inch (13 mm), giving you the head intended for ordinary drill bits and other accessories that fit a 1/2-inch chuck. This is the attachment to select when you need the familiar chuck format rather than a fixed 1/4-inch hex interface.
Recommended Free Tools
In painting and renovation work, that geometry is useful for tasks such as drilling pilot holes in wood, preparing holes for hardware, or switching among round-shank accessories. The product information does not provide independent figures for drilling speed, torque, run time or vibration, so the chuck size should not be interpreted as a performance test.
2. 1/4-inch hex right-angle attachment
The right-angle head turns the drive direction through a 90-degree configuration. It is intended for locations where a straight drill body cannot line up with the fastener or hole. Typical examples for a painter include working inside a cabinet, between framing members, beside a wall, or under a shelf where the tool body would otherwise collide with the surrounding surface.

Because this is a hex attachment, accessory compatibility follows the manual’s limits: use 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) hex accessories and 1-inch (25.4 mm) bit tips only. The angle changes access; it does not make every bit or extension compatible.
3. 1/4-inch hex quick-release offset attachment
The offset head places the bit away from the tool’s centerline. That can provide clearance when a screw sits close to a side wall, cabinet face, trim return or another obstruction. It is particularly relevant to finish work where the fastener is reachable only from an offset position.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe quick-release offset attachment accepts 1/4-inch hex accessories and 1-inch bit tips only, according to the instruction manual. Do not treat the offset head as a miniature chuck for arbitrary round-shank bits. For accessory changes, use the lock-off and battery-removal procedure described below.
4. 1/4-inch hex quick-release attachment
The straight quick-release head is the direct, compact hex configuration. It is suited to 1/4-inch hex driver bits and short 1-inch bit tips when you want rapid bit changes without installing a separate chuck. For repeated screwdriving during hardware installation, that interface can reduce the need to open and close a chuck between bit changes.
The manual also describes inserting a 1/4-inch hex bit directly into the spindle when no attachment is installed. That is a separate configuration from using the quick-release attachment, and the same 1/4-inch hex and 1-inch-tip limits apply to the quick-release heads.

Which bits fit each head?
| Configuration | Accessory format established by the documentation | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2-inch metal chuck | Accessories that can be secured by the 1/2-inch (13 mm) chuck | The available material does not specify a universal bit-length or every shank type; check the accessory and manual. |
| Right-angle attachment | 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) hex accessories and 1-inch (25.4 mm) bit tips only | Do not assume round-shank bits or longer tips are approved. |
| Offset quick-release attachment | 1/4-inch hex accessories and 1-inch bit tips only | Do not use it as a substitute for the metal chuck. |
| Straight quick-release attachment | 1/4-inch hex accessories and 1-inch bit tips only | Do not infer compatibility with every proprietary or extended-length bit. |
| No attachment installed | A 1/4-inch hex bit may be inserted directly into the spindle | The manual’s stated format does not authorize other shanks. |
These restrictions come from DeWalt’s DCD803 instruction manual. If an accessory does not clearly match the specified interface and length, stop and verify it in the manual rather than forcing it into a head.
How to change heads and accessories safely
The manual makes two controls mandatory before changing an accessory: place the forward/reverse control in the lock-off, center position, and remove the battery pack. This prevents an accidental trigger activation while your hands are near the spindle, chuck or attachment interface.
- Stop the tool completely. Release the trigger and wait for all moving parts to stop.
- Set forward/reverse to lock-off. Move the direction control to its center position, as specified by the manual.
- Remove the battery pack. Do not rely only on the trigger lock; physically remove the pack before changing a head or bit.
- Remove the installed accessory or head. Use the release mechanism for the particular attachment and follow the diagrams and instructions in the manual. The four heads do not all use the same interface, so do not improvise a removal method.
- Install the selected head or bit. Confirm that it is seated and locked. For the two quick-release heads, use only 1/4-inch hex accessories and 1-inch bit tips. If no attachment is installed, the manual permits a 1/4-inch hex bit directly in the spindle.
- Reinstall the battery and test cautiously. Return the direction control from lock-off only after your hands are clear. Run the tool briefly at low load to confirm that the head and bit are secure before beginning the actual hole or fastener.
Keep the complete manual with the tool. It contains the detailed attachment-specific instructions, warnings and operating information that cannot be replaced by a short summary.
What is included, and what you still need to buy
The official included-items list contains the DCD803 tool, all four attachments, an organizer and two belt hooks. The list does not include a battery or charger. “Tool only” is therefore a significant ownership detail, not a minor package variation.
- Included: DCD803 drill/driver, 1/2-inch metal chuck, right-angle 1/4-inch hex attachment, offset 1/4-inch hex quick-release attachment, straight 1/4-inch hex quick-release attachment, organizer and two belt hooks.
- Not included: 20V MAX battery, charger and any drill-bit or screwdriving-bit set.
If you already own a compatible 20V MAX battery and charger, the tool-only format avoids duplicating those items. If you do not, calculate the complete setup as tool plus the exact compatible battery and charger before comparing prices. DeWalt’s listing does not establish a single battery size that every buyer should choose, and current prices vary by retailer and promotion; no unverified price is quoted here.

What the four-head design means for painting and renovation work
Cabinet and built-in installation
Cabinet boxes, face frames and built-ins routinely limit the angle at which a drill can approach a screw. The right-angle head addresses a 90-degree access problem, while the offset head can place the bit beside a panel or close to an edge. These are geometry-based reasons to consider the tool; they are not independent proof that the DCD803B will drive faster or last longer than another drill.
Trim, hardware and punch-list fastening
Finish work often alternates between drilling a pilot hole and driving a screw. The metal chuck gives you a conventional drilling setup, while the straight quick-release head is organized around 1/4-inch hex driving accessories. Keeping the heads in the supplied organizer can make it practical to switch configurations as the job changes, but the time saved depends on the user, the fasteners and the access conditions.
Working near finished surfaces
When drilling or driving near painted walls, cabinet finishes or delicate trim, control matters more than the number of attachments. Use the correct bit, support the work, protect finished surfaces and avoid forcing a bit that does not fit the documented interface. The available product information does not provide a measured clutch behavior, speed range or balance assessment, so those characteristics should be evaluated in person if they are critical to your work.
DCD803B versus DCD703F1: the model-number trap
| Comparison point | DCD803B | DCD703F1 |
|---|---|---|
| Battery platform | 20V MAX | 12V MAX |
| Product identity | Multi-head drill/driver with four supplied attachments | Five-in-one brushless drill/driver kit |
| Package status established in the cited material | Tool only; battery and charger sold separately | Kit designation; the exact included package contents are not established in this article |
| Head count | Four identified heads: metal chuck, right-angle, offset quick-release and straight quick-release | Five-in-one designation; the individual head list is not established here |
| Performance comparison | Not established by independent testing in the available material | |
Choose by platform first. A buyer invested in 20V MAX batteries should not assume that the 12V DCD703F1 uses the same packs, and a buyer seeking a kit should not assume the tool-only DCD803B contains a battery or charger. Confirm the model number printed on the box and the retailer’s package description before ordering.

What this review can and cannot conclude
The documented facts support a clear buying description: the DCD803B is a 20V MAX brushless multi-head drill/driver, supplied with four specific heads, sold without a battery or charger, and limited to the accessory formats described in the manual. Those facts are enough to determine whether the tool’s configuration matches your work.
They do not establish a ranking against another drill. No independent laboratory test, controlled comparison or first-hand hands-on test was available for this article. Consequently, there is no defensible claim here about maximum torque, hole-drilling speed, screw count per charge, runtime, noise, weight distribution, head wobble, durability or real-world longevity. If any of those factors determine your purchase, inspect the tool at a local dealer, consult the current manual and warranty terms, and seek testing that measures the specific factor under comparable conditions.
Verdict for painters
The DCD803B makes the most sense when one 20V MAX motor needs to cover several access problems: conventional drilling with the 1/2-inch metal chuck, 90-degree work with the right-angle head, close-edge fastening with the offset head, and quick 1/4-inch hex changes with the straight head. It is less compelling as a first cordless drill if you still need to buy a battery, charger and bits and have no use for the specialized heads.
Before purchasing, verify the DCD803B model number, budget for the separate battery and charger, and check that your existing accessories meet the 1/4-inch hex and 1-inch-tip limits. Those checks answer the practical questions the four-head design raises without assuming performance that has not been independently measured.
