Is a DeWalt rotary hammer drill worth it? It can be, especially for repeated concrete or masonry holes, sleeve or wedge anchors, and light chiseling. The right answer depends on the exact model, the hole sizes you need, the handle shape you can work with, your existing battery platform, and whether the package includes anything beyond the bare tool.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is a specification-based buying guide rather than a firsthand test report. The available product information identifies several different DeWalt rotary hammers, but it does not identify one unit that an author tested or provide controlled measurements of drilling speed, runtime, comfort, or durability. The models below should therefore be treated as distinct tools, not as interchangeable evidence for one universal review.

What a rotary hammer does that a regular drill cannot

A rotary hammer combines rotation with a dedicated percussion mechanism. That impact action is designed to break through concrete and masonry while an SDS-Plus bit moves in and out of the chuck. A conventional drill with a hammer setting can handle occasional small holes, but a rotary hammer is the more task-specific choice when you are drilling many holes, working in dense concrete, or switching between drilling and light chipping.

  • COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
  • ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

For a painter, the use cases are usually practical rather than structural: installing handrail or guardrail anchors, fastening furring or framing to masonry, mounting signs, drilling for conduit supports, removing small patches of tile or mortar, and preparing penetrations for other trades. The tool is not automatically the best choice for every hole. If your work is limited to a few small masonry holes each year, the size, cost, and SDS-Plus accessories may be harder to justify than a general-purpose hammer drill. Repeated anchor work is where the rotary hammer’s dedicated impact system becomes more valuable.

The exact DeWalt model changes the answer

“A DeWalt rotary hammer” is not one specification. The three US models identified here differ in handle geometry, stated drilling capacity, and manufacturer-rated impact energy. Those differences affect access, control, and the type of work each model is intended to cover.

Model and market Handle and stated capacity Manufacturer-stated impact energy Documented features or package information
DCH273B (US) L-shape; 1-inch SDS-Plus rotary hammer 2.1 joules Brushless motor; drill, hammer-drill, and chip modes; SHOCKS Active Vibration Control; tool-only package with 360° side handle, depth rod, and adjustable hook; 3-year limited warranty
DCH133B (US) D-handle; 1-inch SDS-Plus rotary hammer 2.6 joules 20V MAX, brushless, cordless design; exact package contents depend on SKU
DCH263B (US) D-handle; 1-1/8-inch SDS-Plus rotary hammer 3.0 joules 20V MAX, brushless design; SHOCKS Active Vibration Control
DCH273N-XJ (UK) 18V XR; 24 mm SDS-Plus hammer drill 2.1 joules UK listing states 6.6 m/s² vibration level; regional specification presentation

The joule figures are DeWalt product specifications. They are not results from a controlled comparison, so they cannot by themselves establish which model drills faster, lasts longer, or feels better under load. Capacity figures likewise describe the manufacturer’s stated class; actual results vary with concrete, bit condition, reinforcement, technique, and battery state.

DCH273B: the L-shape option for mixed access

The US DCH273B is a 20V MAX XR brushless 1-inch SDS-Plus rotary hammer with an L-shaped layout. DeWalt lists three application modes: drill, hammer drill, and chip. That combination covers ordinary rotary drilling, impact drilling in masonry, and light chiseling when rotation is not wanted.

DeWalt also lists SHOCKS Active Vibration Control. Its product wording says: “Shocks Active Vibration Control System reduces vibration felt by the user at the handles, compared to rotary hammers without this feature.” That is a manufacturer statement about the feature, not an independent measurement in this review. It is still relevant when you expect long periods of anchor drilling or intermittent chipping, because handle vibration is a major part of how a rotary hammer is experienced on site.

The DCH273B listing is explicitly tool only. The listed contents are the hammer, a 360-degree side handle, a depth rod, and an adjustable hook. No battery or charger is established as included in this package. If you are entering the 20V MAX platform, add the cost and availability of a compatible battery and charger before deciding whether the package is good value.

  • Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.

For dust control, DeWalt’s statement is conditional: the DCH273 is described as OSHA Table 1 compliant when paired with the DWH303DH on-board extractor. That claim applies to the named tool-and-extractor combination; it should not be generalized to the bare hammer or to an unspecified vacuum arrangement.

DCH133B: a D-handle 1-inch alternative

The DCH133B is also a US 20V MAX brushless cordless SDS-Plus rotary hammer, but it uses a D-handle layout and carries a manufacturer-stated 2.6-joule impact-energy figure. Its 1-inch class places it in the same broad capacity category as the DCH273B, while the handle geometry gives it a distinctly different shape in the hand.

A D-handle can be attractive when you prefer a straight rear grip and a more conventional fore-and-aft stance. Whether that geometry is easier depends on the wall, floor, ladder position, bit length, and the protective equipment you wear. The available specifications do not establish a comfort or control winner, so choose based on the positions in which you actually drill rather than assuming the higher joule number will feel better.

DeWalt also lists a DCH133M2 kit variant separately. The existence of that SKU does not prove that every DCH133 package includes the same batteries, charger, case, or accessories. Check the complete contents for the exact model number offered by the seller. Treat the DCH133B bare tool and the DCH133M2 kit as different purchase decisions.

DCH263B: when the stated capacity is more important

The DCH263B is a US 20V MAX SDS-Plus brushless D-handle rotary hammer with a stated 1-1/8-inch capacity and 3.0 joules of impact energy. DeWalt lists SHOCKS Active Vibration Control on this model as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The larger stated capacity makes the DCH263B the model to examine when your anchors or penetrations routinely approach the upper end of the 1-inch class. It does not mean every hole will be faster than a smaller model, nor does it replace the need to select a bit rated for the material and diameter. A larger hammer can also be unnecessary bulk if your normal work consists of small anchor holes.

Because the DCH263B is a D-handle design, compare the tool’s physical access with the locations you service. On a floor or open wall, the handle may be easy to orient; in a tight corner, behind pipework, or above a finished surface, an L-shape may fit your stance better. The specifications establish the geometry and capacity, not a universal ergonomic verdict.

US and UK specifications should not be blended

DeWalt’s UK listing for the DCH273N-XJ presents the tool as an 18V XR brushless 24 mm SDS-Plus hammer drill. It states 2.1 joules, a 24 mm concrete-drilling capability, and a vibration level of 6.6 m/s². Keep those figures tied to the UK listing and its regional model number.

The US DCH273B is presented as a 20V MAX XR 1-inch tool. Although the stated energy is also 2.1 joules, the regional names, voltage labeling, capacity notation, and SKU are not interchangeable for purchasing purposes. Confirm the model suffix, local battery system, warranty terms, and included accessories in your country before ordering.

How to decide whether it is worth buying

Choose a rotary hammer when your workload is repetitive

  • You drill many concrete or masonry holes for anchors, brackets, rails, or supports.
  • You need SDS-Plus bits and the option to chip out small sections of mortar, tile, or masonry.
  • Your existing battery platform matches the tool, reducing the need to buy a separate battery and charger.
  • You value a dedicated impact mechanism instead of asking a general drill to perform every masonry task.

Consider a smaller or different tool category when work is occasional

  • Your projects involve only a few small holes and little or no chiseling.
  • You already own a suitable hammer drill and do not expect repeated concrete work.
  • You work in very tight spaces where the body and handle of a rotary hammer are difficult to position.
  • The required bits, battery, charger, and dust-control equipment would cost more than the limited work justifies.

Match capacity to the holes you actually drill

Start with your largest routine hole, not the largest hole you might drill once. The DCH273B and DCH133B are listed in the 1-inch class, while the DCH263B is listed at 1-1/8 inches. That distinction matters when selecting anchors and bits, but it should not be treated as a promise of speed. A model that is oversized for your normal holes can add unnecessary weight and package cost.

Decide whether the handle shape fits your access

The DCH273B’s L-shape and the DCH133B and DCH263B’s D-handle layouts offer different ways to align the tool against a wall or floor. Think through ladder work, overhead drilling, corners, and the need to keep a depth stop visible. Handle geometry is a selection factor that the published energy number cannot answer.

What you need before the first hole

  1. Confirm the SKU and region. Verify whether you are buying DCH273B, DCH133B, DCH263B, or the UK DCH273N-XJ. Do not assume a similarly named model has the same voltage label, capacity, or warranty.
  2. Check the package contents. The DCH273B is listed as tool only with a side handle, depth rod, and adjustable hook. For a kit variant such as DCH133M2, verify the specific batteries, charger, case, and accessories in the seller’s listing.
  3. Obtain SDS-Plus bits rated for the hole sizes and material. The models discussed use SDS-Plus tooling. Bits are task accessories, not documented inclusions in the DCH273B package.
  4. Plan dust control. If you require the DCH273’s stated OSHA Table 1 configuration, use the named DWH303DH on-board extractor pairing. Do not treat the statement as approval for an unspecified setup.
  5. Fit the side handle and depth rod. Use the supplied 360-degree handle and depth rod on the DCH273B to establish a repeatable grip and hole depth before drilling a series of anchors.
  6. Select the operating mode. Use drill mode when rotation without hammering is appropriate, hammer-drill mode for concrete or masonry impact drilling, and chip mode when the task calls for impact without rotation. The three modes are specifically listed for the DCH273B; do not assume every model has an identical mode list without checking its SKU.

How to compare the purchase price without a misleading promise

No current price, stock status, or independently verified ownership cost is established for these models. A fair value calculation therefore starts with the complete working package rather than the bare-tool sticker price.

  • Tool cost for the exact model and regional SKU.
  • Battery and charger cost if you do not already own the matching platform.
  • SDS-Plus bits in the diameters you use most often.
  • Dust-extraction equipment if your job requirements call for it.
  • Replacement or additional accessories needed for repeated anchor work.
  • Warranty coverage; the DCH273B listing states a 3-year limited warranty.

Compare complete packages on that basis. A cheaper bare tool can become the more expensive route if it requires a new battery system and several bits, while a kit can be better value only when its included batteries and charger match your workload. Do not infer package contents from a model family name.

What the published specifications cannot tell you

The available product pages establish model identity, modes, capacities, impact-energy ratings, vibration-control features, and selected package details. They do not establish drilling speed in a controlled test, holes per charge, runtime under a defined load, long-term durability, measured comfort, or buyer satisfaction.

For that reason, the 2.1-, 2.6-, and 3.0-joule figures should be used to understand how DeWalt positions the models, not to create a performance ranking. A real comparison would need the same bit type and diameter, the same concrete or masonry, equal battery conditions, a defined hole depth, and repeated measurements. Without those controls, a faster-looking result could reflect softer material, a sharper bit, or a fuller battery rather than a better hammer.

Common buying and use mistakes

Assuming the title identifies one tested tool

The phrase “DeWalt rotary hammer drill” covers multiple models. Read the complete SKU before applying any specification or review conclusion. DCH273B, DCH133B, DCH263B, and DCH273N-XJ are not the same tool.

Reading impact energy as drilling speed

Impact energy is only one manufacturer specification. It does not account for bit design, motor control, concrete hardness, reinforcement, operator pressure, or battery condition.

Buying a bare tool without checking your battery platform

The DCH273B listing is tool only. Confirm that you have a compatible battery and charger or include them in the purchase calculation.

Generalizing the dust statement

The OSHA Table 1 wording is conditional on the DCH303DH on-board extractor pairing for the DCH273. It is not a blanket claim for every vacuum, model, or drilling arrangement.

Using the wrong regional specification

Do not combine the UK DCH273N-XJ’s 18V XR and 24 mm presentation with the US DCH273B’s 20V MAX and 1-inch presentation when ordering parts or comparing packages.

Which model makes sense for which painter?

Choose the DCH273B when access and mode versatility lead

The DCH273B is the most clearly documented choice for someone who wants an L-shape, three listed modes, a depth rod, a side handle, and a conditional dust-extraction configuration. It suits a painter who repeatedly drills standard-size masonry anchors and occasionally needs light chipping, provided the tool-only package fits the existing battery platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the DCH133B when a D-handle 1-inch layout is preferable

The DCH133B occupies the same broad 1-inch class with a D-handle and a stated 2.6 joules. It is worth considering when that grip geometry suits your stance and your work does not require the DCH263B’s larger stated capacity. Verify the package because the DCH133B and DCH133M2 are separate SKUs.

Choose the DCH263B when larger routine holes justify it

The DCH263B is the model to examine when your normal work approaches the stated 1-1/8-inch capacity and you want the D-handle format. Its 3.0-joule figure and vibration-control feature are manufacturer specifications, not proof that it will outperform the other models in every material.

Verdict: is a DeWalt rotary hammer drill worth it?

For painters and contractors who repeatedly drill concrete or masonry, install anchors, or perform light chipping, a DeWalt rotary hammer can be a sensible investment. The strongest case is a workload that benefits from SDS-Plus tooling and a dedicated impact mechanism, especially when you already own the matching battery platform.

It is not possible to give one universal “worth it” verdict because the model, package, region, and workload change the decision. The DCH273B, DCH133B, and DCH263B have different handles and stated capacities, and the published joule figures are not independent performance tests. Select the exact SKU first, price the complete working setup, and match the capacity and handle to the holes and positions you actually encounter. That approach gives you a defensible buying decision without mistaking a product specification for a hands-on test result.
