Dhanteras, also called Dhan Trayodashi, is the observance that opens the Diwali sequence in many accounts. It falls on Trayodashi, the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin. Worship and shopping customs are associated with the day, but practices vary by region and household, and buying something is not a requirement.

Dhanteras is a Hindu observance at the start of the multi-day Diwali festival. Akashvani News also calls it Dhan Trayodashi and Dhanvantri Jayanti; the Ministry of Tourism describes Diwali as a festival that begins with Dhanteras. The observances that follow unfold over several days, rather than forming a single-day event.

The day’s name and traditions are associated with wealth and well-being. The label Dhanvantri Jayanti refers to Dhanvantari, who is worshipped in reported Dhanteras customs.
When does Dhanteras fall?
Dhanteras is observed on Trayodashi in Krishna Paksha of Ashwin. Because this is a lunar-calendar date, its Gregorian date changes from year to year.

What worship is associated with Dhanteras?
Akashvani News reported that people worship Dhanvantari, Kuber and Lakshmi on Dhanteras. A cultural description from the Gorakhpur district government also mentions worship of Dhanwantari. These are documented accounts of practice, not a rule that every family observes the day in the same way. Rituals and household customs can differ by region.

What do people buy on Dhanteras?
Buying metal articles, utensils or jewelry is a custom associated with Dhanteras in the accounts from Akashvani News and the Gorakhpur district government. The district account says people buy according to their means. This is a customary choice, not a compulsory purchase or a guarantee of future wealth.
- If you choose to buy: Consider whether a metal utensil or another metalware item suits your budget and has practical use in your household.
- If you do not want to shop: You can observe the day without buying anything; the cited accounts do not make a purchase mandatory.
- For other Diwali items: Diyas and oil lamps are part of wider Diwali lighting traditions, but the sources do not establish buying one as a universal Dhanteras-specific custom.
Government material also describes artisans and small businesses—including potters, lantern makers, decorators, florists, sweet-makers, jewellers and textile artisans—contributing to Deepavali. Those activities are part of the wider festival context; they should not all be treated as specific to Dhanteras.
