Diamond ADU is a 1,200-square-foot accessory dwelling unit in Sonoma, California, designed by S^A | Schwartz and Architecture and completed in 2022. Set on a six-acre property with an existing house and outbuildings, it borrows the character of weathered agricultural structures without imitating a barn. A lowered roof, placement among oak trees and a full-length linear skylight make the small building recede into its site while keeping the interior bright. The published record documents its design intent, systems and specifications, but not construction cost, owner identity or measured energy performance.

What the Diamond ADU is
Diamond ADU is a detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) by S^A | Schwartz and Architecture in Sonoma, California. S^A dates the project to 2022. Architectural Record describes a 1,200-square-foot building and a June 2022 completion, while the AIA Redwood Empire listing records August 1, 2022. Those records differ on the month, so the most defensible description is a 1,200-square-foot Sonoma ADU completed in 2022, with the month attributed to the specific source.
The unit sits on a six-acre property that already contains a main house and outbuildings. The owner and total construction cost are withheld in both the Architectural Record account and the AIA listing; there is no reliable basis for estimating either figure.
S^A presents the project as a contemporary country home rather than a replica of a rural shed. The firm’s description says it is “Neither an unconsidered ‘modern farmhouse’ nor the literal ruins of a de-constructing rural barn,” but a home intended to feel “alive—complete, but always in process.” Architectural Record attributes the shorter phrase to S^A founder Neal Schwartz, who also describes the strange elegance of Sonoma’s rural relics.

How the design responds to Sonoma’s farm buildings
A reference, not a replica
Old agricultural structures scattered through Sonoma wine country supplied the conceptual starting point. Their appeal comes from weathering, utility and an unforced relationship with the landscape. Diamond ADU translates those qualities into a new building with precise detailing instead of faux ruin or decorative farmhouse styling.
From the road, the ADU can appear relatively conventional. Move around the property, however, and the roof seems to vanish in places, allowing the building to read as a pavilion. This changing perception is a deliberate effect of the low roofline, the surrounding oak canopy and the restrained exterior palette.

Lowering the building into the site
S^A lowered the new structure relative to the existing buildings and tucked it into a grove of oak trees. The strategy reduces the apparent height and limits long views of the roof and walls. Architectural Record likewise emphasizes the lower roofline and the grove as the principal measures that reduce visual impact.
This is a site-planning decision as much as an aesthetic one. Instead of competing with the main house or announcing a separate object in an open field, the ADU occupies a quieter position among established vegetation. The result is a building that becomes more legible as a pavilion from some angles and more house-like from others.

Arrival sequence
Architectural Record describes an exposed-timber entrance overhang and a vestibule. These elements create a sheltered threshold between the outdoor site and the compact interior. The overhang also gives the entry a tactile, agricultural reference without copying a historic detail literally.
How daylight shapes the interior
The continuous linear skylight
The defining interior move is a long, linear skylight that runs through the building. It divides the interior while bringing daylight deep into the plan. S^A identifies capturing the site’s natural light as a primary design agenda, and Architectural Record places the skylight at the center of that strategy.
Rather than relying only on windows in the exterior walls, the roof opening introduces light along the length of the ADU. That approach is particularly useful in a compact linear plan, where rooms farther from the perimeter could otherwise depend on borrowed light. The skylight also gives the interior a changing connection to the sky as sun, cloud cover and season shift.

Light as an organizing device
The skylight is not simply an overhead window added after the plan was set. Its position divides the space and helps establish the sequence of rooms and circulation. The resulting line acts as an interior datum: occupants read the building through the band of light as much as through walls or furniture.
Because the roofline is intentionally subdued from outside, the skylight provides an interior counterpoint. The exterior blends into trees and terrain; the interior is marked by a precise, luminous incision.
Lighting after dark
Loisos + Ubbelohde developed the lighting design collaboratively with the clients, architect and contractors. Their project description identifies three principal fixture strategies:
- Recessed linear fixtures integrated into the skylight wells, extending the daylight element into evening hours.
- Diffusing pendants in the entry volume, adding a softer focal glow at the arrival space.
- Unobtrusive recessed downlights for general illumination without competing with the architecture.
This layered approach distinguishes ambient, entry and architectural lighting rather than treating every room with identical downlights. Integrating linear sources into the skylight wells preserves the central design idea when daylight is gone, while the pendants give the vestibule a more intimate scale.
Sustainability and building systems: what is documented
Off-grid readiness
Architectural Record describes the property as off-grid ready, with photovoltaics, a well and a septic system. Those provisions indicate that the ADU was planned to function with on-site power and water infrastructure where appropriate. They do not establish that the building operates entirely off-grid, nor do the published sources provide annual energy use, water-use data, a certification or a measured performance rating.

Passive heating and cooling
The ADU was oriented to use passive heating and cooling strategies rather than rely entirely on mechanical systems. Orientation, the compact form, roof design, openings and the surrounding trees all contribute to the environmental concept, but the project record does not publish modeled loads, indoor temperature data or a quantified percentage of passive conditioning.
Material sourcing
The material palette prioritizes locally sourced, sustainable domestic materials for siding, roofing, lime plaster, countertops and tile, according to Architectural Record. “Sustainable” here describes the project’s stated design priority; no environmental product declarations, embodied-carbon totals or chain-of-custody documentation are supplied in the published accounts.

At 1,200 square feet, Diamond ADU is large enough to support a complete dwelling but compact enough that circulation, storage and daylight must work together. The published material does not provide a room-by-room plan or additional dimensions, so a precise bedroom count or square-foot allocation should not be inferred.

The available descriptions point to a sequence rather than a collection of isolated rooms: an exposed-timber entry overhang, a vestibule, an interior organized by the skylight and a series of framed views toward the oak grove. Multi-slide doors and the pavilion-like reading of the roof suggest a strong relationship between inside and outside, but the sources do not state the door sizes, glazing area or exact orientation of each opening.

Lessons for designing a similar ADU
Start with visibility, not style
Diamond ADU’s strongest lesson is to solve how a new building will be seen before choosing a stylistic label. Lowering the roof, preserving mature trees and aligning the structure with existing outbuildings can reduce visual impact more effectively than adding farmhouse details.
Use one strong daylight idea
A continuous skylight can provide orientation, daylight and an architectural identity at once. It requires careful coordination of waterproofing, shading, glare control, structure and artificial lighting. The Diamond ADU example shows the value of designing those layers together rather than treating the skylight as a late upgrade.
Separate documented performance from intent
Photovoltaics, a well, septic and passive strategies are meaningful provisions, but they are not the same as verified operating performance. Anyone adapting this approach should request energy modeling, equipment schedules, commissioning information and post-occupancy data before claiming that a new ADU is net-zero or fully off-grid.
Treat specifications as a starting point
The named products demonstrate one project’s coordinated palette. Local code, climate, lead times, maintenance, installer expertise and current availability may lead another project to different choices. The architectural principles—durable materials, controlled daylight and a quiet relationship to vegetation—are more transferable than any single manufacturer or finish.
