A dinosaur is a member of a particular group of reptiles—not simply any large or ancient reptile. Dinosaurs are distinguished in part by an upright stance, with their legs positioned beneath their bodies. Birds belong to the dinosaur lineage and are its living members; pterosaurs and marine reptiles, despite sharing the same ancient world, were not dinosaurs.

What makes an animal a dinosaur?
Dinosaurs are an evolutionary group known chiefly through fossils. Their legs typically extended beneath the body rather than sprawling out to the sides, a useful first clue for distinguishing familiar dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops from many other prehistoric reptiles. Scientists classify dinosaurs using broader anatomical and evolutionary evidence, not stance alone. The U.S. National Park Service explains the distinction in its overview of what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur.

The word “dinosaur” is not a catch-all for every reptile that lived millions of years ago. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles, while plesiosaurs and other marine reptiles lived in the seas; neither group was dinosaurian. They are sometimes grouped in popular descriptions as animals of the “Age of Dinosaurs,” but that phrase refers to the era in which they lived, not their classification.

Are birds dinosaurs?
Yes. Birds descended from an ancient dinosaur lineage and are living dinosaurs. The mass extinction around 66 million years ago wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs—the dinosaur groups other than birds—but did not eliminate the entire dinosaur lineage. Calling all dinosaurs extinct overlooks the birds alive today. The Natural History Museum, London, provides an introduction to what dinosaurs are.
When did dinosaurs live?
Dinosaurs first appeared during the Triassic Period and diversified across the Mesozoic Era, which includes the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The National Park Service places non-avian dinosaurs at approximately 235 million to 66 million years ago. The American Museum of Natural History describes their first appearance at about 245 million years ago. These are approximate educational timelines, and the difference is a reason not to treat one earliest date as precise or universally settled.

Across that immense span, dinosaurs evolved into many forms and occupied a range of ecological niches. Fossils let scientists reconstruct their anatomy, diversity and history, but the fossil record is incomplete. The species known today are not a complete inventory of every dinosaur that existed, and fossil evidence does not preserve every aspect of their lives or behavior. See the National Park Service’s dinosaur overview and the American Museum of Natural History’s dinosaur resource.
What killed the non-avian dinosaurs?
The non-avian dinosaurs disappeared in a mass extinction event around 66 million years ago. A large asteroid or comet impact is the leading evidence-based explanation: the American Museum of Natural History describes an impact as the leading explanation, and the Natural History Museum says strong evidence supports an asteroid impact. The evidence supports the impact explanation, although that does not mean every detail of the event and its consequences is settled.
