You can make precise black-and-off-white horizontal striped draperies by sewing separate solid-fabric bands instead of searching for a printed stripe that happens to match your window. The dependable method is to install the rod and rings first, measure from the actual pin position to the floor, choose the floor finish and fullness, and only then calculate each panel’s cuts.

Kristi Linauer’s project is a useful pattern for the process, not a universal cutting plan. Her finished panels were 88.75 inches long and used seven bands, but your window, heading, fabric width, lining and desired fullness will change every major dimension.

Start with the rod, rings and finished length

Do not determine panel length from the window frame alone. Install the drapery rod and rings in their final positions before cutting fabric. Measure from the floor to the inside bottom of the small pin loop on each ring—the point where a drapery pin will attach. That measurement is the reference for the finished curtain length.

Decide how the lower edge should meet the floor before adding allowances:

  • Just above the floor: Linauer later subtracted 1/4 inch from her ring-to-floor measurement so the finished panels would clear the floor slightly. AllPeopleQuilt gives a different example of finishing 1/2 inch above the floor. These are style examples, not mandatory standards.
  • Break: A small amount of fabric rests at the floor. Linauer describes adding about 1 inch as an example.
  • Puddle: Extra length pools on the floor. Her example adds roughly 12 inches.

The rod height, ring style, heading depth and floor treatment all affect the finished length. Write the target length down before calculating stripe heights, and measure both sides of the window if the floor is not perfectly level.

Choose fullness and panel width before buying fabric

Horizontal bands can be made as flat decorative panels or as fuller curtains that close across the window. Fullness determines how many fabric widths you need and therefore how many stripes you must piece across each panel.

Flat or single-width decorative panels

A single fabric width per panel can create a tailored look with fewer seams and less yardage. Linauer used one fabric width for each panel on a wide front window to reduce fabric consumption and the number of stripes. That was her disclosed design compromise, not a general fullness recommendation; a single width may look skimpy when closed.

Full functional draperies

For curtains intended to draw across a window, calculate the finished coverage and multiply it by a fullness factor. The AllPeopleQuilt drape worksheet suggests 1.5 or 2 times the required width, depending on the look. Linauer says she generally expects about 2.5 to 3 times the window width for pinch-pleated draperies. Use the lower or higher figure only after deciding how much stack-back, privacy and fold depth you need.

Measure the fabric you actually plan to use. Decorator fabrics are often 54 inches wide, while quilting cottons are often 42 inches wide. Usable width is smaller after removing selvages, so calculate with the finished usable width rather than the advertised width.

Convert the plan into yardage

  1. Record the finished width required for one panel, including the amount of window coverage and your fullness factor.
  2. Divide that width by the usable width of the chosen fabric and round up to whole fabric widths.
  3. Record the finished length from the ring pin loop to the floor treatment you selected.
  4. Add the heading, hem and joining-seam allowances to the length of each band.
  5. Check the fabric’s pattern repeat, even though solid fabrics avoid matching a printed design. The AllPeopleQuilt worksheet accounts for repeat, finished length, fullness and fabric width and is useful for checking your arithmetic.

Buy black and off-white fabrics with compatible weight, drape and washing instructions. A heavy black linen paired with a much lighter white cloth can produce uneven seams and different shrinkage, so test-wash a sample when the care labels permit.

What Linauer’s seven-stripe layout tells you

Linauer could not find a ready-made stripe that would give her seven nearly equal bands at the length she wanted. She pieced solid black linen and solid off-white linen instead. Her reported finished panel length was 88.75 inches. For one single-width panel, her face-fabric notes list two black end stripes cut at 21 3/8 inches, two additional black stripes cut at 14 inches, and three white stripes cut at 14 inches.

Those are measurements from that project, including its top, bottom, seam, hem and header allowances. They are not universal dimensions. The end bands needed extra fabric for the top and bottom construction; the middle bands needed allowance for their joining seams. Recalculate every band for your own finished length and heading rather than copying these numbers.

Element Linauer’s project note How to use it
Finished panel length 88.75 inches Reference only; measure your own ring-to-floor distance.
Stripe count Seven bands Choose a count that gives the visual scale you want.
End bands Two black bands at 21 3/8 inches each Include extra allowance for the top, bottom, hem and heading construction.
Middle black bands Two at 14 inches each Add the allowance required for each joining seam.
White bands Three at 14 inches each Keep the order consistent from panel to panel.

If you change from seven stripes to five or nine, divide the visible finished length among the new number of bands, then add the correct allowance to each cut. End bands may need different allowances from interior bands, so do not use one identical cut height for every strip without checking the construction.

Prepare the tools and mark the fabric

Gather fabric scissors, a tape measure, a long ruler or straightedge, pins, thread, a framing square, an iron and pressing surface, drapery hooks or pins, lining if desired, and the rod and rings. Newton Custom Interiors’ curtain-sewing materials lists include these basic measuring, cutting and hardware supplies.

Make a square starting edge

Fold the cloth lengthwise with the selvages together and smooth it on a large, flat surface. Use a framing square to establish a true crosswise edge. Linauer’s emphatic advice is, “DON’T EVER TEAR YOUR FABRIC!!!” In her experience, tearing can stretch the cloth or leave an edge that is not straight and square. Cut the edge with scissors instead.

Transfer and secure stripe lines

  1. Measure the planned stripe boundaries at several points across the fabric width. Do not trust one measurement at the selvage; linen and other woven cloth can bow.
  2. Mark each boundary with a removable method appropriate for the fabric.
  3. Layer the fabrics and pin them before cutting so they cannot shift. Long bands magnify small movements into visible diagonal seams.
  4. Label every piece with its right side and its top direction. Subtle nap, sheen or weave direction can make a reversed piece look different after it is hung.
  5. Cut each black and off-white band to its calculated length and the full usable panel width.

Remove puckered selvages before joining. A distorted selvage can pull the panel edge inward and make the stripes appear to taper.

Sew the bands in order

  1. Lay the pieces on the floor or a large table in the exact top-to-bottom sequence. Photograph or label the arrangement before stacking it.
  2. Join the first two bands with their right sides together, keeping the marked top direction consistent.
  3. Sew the seam with the allowance you included in your calculations. Repeat one seam at a time until all seven bands form a panel.
  4. Press each seam open and flat as you go. Pressing prevents thick ridges and helps the color boundary remain straight.
  5. Measure the assembled panel against your target length before adding the lining, hem or heading. Correct a discrepancy while the seams are still accessible.

Use the same seam allowance and pressing method on every panel. Compare panels on a flat surface so the black and white boundaries align at the same heights; a small difference is conspicuous when panels hang beside each other.

Finish the top, bottom and lining

Linauer’s initial post shows the face fabric, while the finished follow-up says the completed panels were lined and pinch pleated. Treat lining and heading as separate construction stages, because each changes the allowances and final length.

Heading and ring attachment

Pinch pleats consume fabric width and require hooks or pins positioned to match the rings. Mark the heading depth from the ring pin loop, not from the rod’s top edge. If you use a different heading—grommets, rod pocket or flat clips—recalculate the top allowance before cutting.

Hem

Check the hanging length with the rod and rings in place before making the final hem. A temporary hem or pinned fold lets you confirm the floor clearance on both sides. Press the hem sharply and sew it evenly so the bottom black band remains level.

Lining choices

An unlined panel uses less fabric and preserves the face cloth’s natural drape, but sunlight, insulation and privacy will be limited by the face fabric. A conventional lining adds body and can protect the face fabric. If room darkening is the priority, Sailrite describes making a separate blackout liner on a second rod behind the decorative curtains. That arrangement is optional and its performance depends on the selected lining, overlap and light leakage around the window.

Hang, inspect and correct common problems

  • Panel is too short: Recheck the measurement from the ring pin loop and the floor finish. If the hem is not sewn, release the temporary fold; otherwise add a lower band only if the color layout still works.
  • Panel puddles more than intended: Confirm that the extra length was not added twice—once for a puddle and again in the hem allowance. Re-hem after the panel hangs overnight and settles.
  • Stripes slope or fail to meet: The cause is usually an out-of-square starting edge, unequal measurements across the width or shifting layers during cutting. Square a new edge, pin more frequently and compare boundary marks before sewing.
  • Seams look bulky: Verify that seams were pressed open and that the lining is not caught in the face-fabric seam allowance.
  • Panel looks flat when closed: Add width rather than simply gathering the existing panel. Recalculate the number of fabric widths with a 1.5, 2, or higher fullness factor appropriate to your intended look.
  • One piece appears darker or shinier: Check the right-side and top-direction labels. Reverse nap or sheen can make identical fabric look mismatched.

A practical choice guide

Decision Lower-material option More coverage or structure
Panel width One fabric width per panel for a decorative treatment Calculate 1.5–2 times fullness, or about 2.5–3 times for the pinch-pleat fullness Linauer generally expects
Face fabric Unlined solid linen or similar cloth Face fabric with a separate lining for body and light control
Floor finish Just above the floor, such as 1/4 or 1/2 inch in the cited examples A 1-inch break or roughly 12-inch puddle, if that is the intended style
Stripe layout Fewer, wider bands with simpler cutting Seven or more bands for a stronger graphic rhythm, with more seams and pressing

Budget and hardware context

The project depends on a rod, rings, hooks or pins, face fabric and optional lining. The original follow-up reported about $69 in 2016 for an eight-foot, 1.5-inch cell-cast acrylic rod, before extra polished ends and shipping. That historical figure is not a current price; hardware availability and cost vary by material, length and finish. Measure the rod span and ring count first, then price the components available in your region.

The most important purchase is not a particular fabric brand but enough compatible yardage to accommodate your calculated width, stripe count, seam allowances and cutting waste. A small test seam and a pinned sample at the rod can prevent an expensive full-length mistake.
