This DIY board-and-batten reveal documents a foyer and hallway painted with Glidden Duo Paint + Primer in Crisp Linen White, semi-gloss. Lauren reports preparing the wood carefully, brushing the trim, feathering the edges, rolling the larger areas with a mini roller, and applying two coats over darker wall paint and wood. She describes quick drying, favorable coverage, and a smooth finish on that project. Those are her observations from a 2015 makeover, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every surface or current Glidden formula.

The review also has an important disclosure: Glidden supplied the gallon she tried. The original post was published September 2, 2015, and updated May 11, 2022, so treat the named Duo product and Crisp Linen White color as historical references. Glidden’s current catalog still lists interior paints and primers, with Amazon shown as a retailer for some products, but it does not establish that the exact historical product and color remain available.

What this DIY board-and-batten reveal covers

The project is a foyer and hallway update rather than a full construction manual. The visual change comes from adding board-and-batten-style trim, preparing the wood and existing surfaces, and repainting the space in a light semi-gloss finish. Lauren’s post points readers to an earlier board-and-batten guide for the construction details, then concentrates on the finished reveal and her experience with the paint.

That distinction matters if you are planning a similar wall. The reveal gives you a useful sequence for surface preparation and paint application, but it does not provide a complete measured plan for every wall, a material takeoff, a labor estimate, or a controlled test against another paint. Use the practical steps below as a project framework, then measure your own wall and follow the instructions for the specific products you buy.

The project at a glance

Project detail What the original post reports How to interpret it
Location Foyer and hallway A residential interior with both existing wall paint and wood trim to coat
Paint Glidden Duo Paint + Primer A historical product reference from the project
Color Crisp Linen White Confirm whether the color is still mixed or listed before shopping
Sheen Semi-gloss Creates a more reflective, wipeable-looking finish than flat paint, but the post does not provide a laboratory durability test
Coats Two coats Lauren says this was needed over darker wall paint and wood in her space
Tools reported Brush and mini roller The brush handled trim and edges; the mini roller covered the broader sections
Paint left About a cup or two from a gallon An anecdotal remainder, not a coverage rate for other rooms or surfaces
Disclosure Glidden sent the gallon for her to try Her positive comments should be read with that material context

Why the preparation made the finish possible

Lauren says the team filled, caulked, and sanded wood knots, seams, and nail holes before painting. That work is easy to underestimate because it disappears under the finish, yet it determines whether the finished wall looks built-in or shows every joint and fastener.

Fill knots, seams, and nail holes

Inspect every board in raking light before opening the paint. Knots can telegraph through a light color, seams can remain visible as ridges, and nail holes can catch light as small dimples. Apply a compatible filler to the holes and other depressions, allow it to dry, and sand it flush. If a knot or resinous area continues to discolor, use a stain-blocking solution appropriate for that surface rather than assuming a paint-and-primer product will hide every mark.

The original reveal does not identify a filler brand, quantity, or drying schedule. Select a filler according to the wood, the depth of the repair, and the instructions on its container. Overfilling creates a hump that is just as visible as an unfilled hole, so work in thin applications and check the surface with your fingertips after sanding.

Sand the wood and soften sharp transitions

Sand repaired areas until they are level with the surrounding wood. Sherwin-Williams’ general board-and-batten guidance separately recommends sanding the edges of wood pieces before painting. That advice is project context from Sherwin-Williams, not a dimension or step reported by Lauren. Breaking a sharp edge slightly helps paint cover it evenly and reduces the chance of a raised ridge catching the roller or brush.

Remove sanding dust before priming or painting. Dust left on the wall can become a grainy speck in the finish; dust left on trim can prevent caulk and paint from bonding cleanly. A thorough vacuum followed by a clean, slightly damp wipe is a practical sequence, provided the surface is completely dry before coating.

Caulk the joints that should read as one surface

Use paintable caulk where the trim meets the wall and at other small stationary joints that need a continuous line. Tool the bead smooth, wipe away excess, and let it cure according to the label. Caulk is for gaps and movement joints; it is not a substitute for filling deep holes or correcting a board that is out of plane.

Tape and protect adjoining trim

Lauren says the trim was taped before painting. Apply tape to the surfaces that must stay clean, press the edge down firmly, and remove the tape according to the caulk and paint instructions so the edge does not tear. Tape improves control, but it does not replace a steady brush at corners or protect floors from drips. Cover the floor and nearby hardware before you begin.

Construction context for a board-and-batten wall

A board-and-batten treatment combines wider boards or vertical strips with narrower battens to create a repeated panel pattern. The exact layout depends on wall width, existing outlets, door casings, baseboards, and the look you want. Measure the wall first and mark the pattern with removable tape or pencil so you can see how the end spaces will land.

What the separate Sherwin-Williams guide adds

Sherwin-Williams’ official guide recommends sanding wood edges before painting, painting the planks, and attaching them after they dry with a nail gun while observing appropriate safety precautions. Its example uses 2½-inch wood strips and suggests making the strips slightly wider than the spaces between squares so the underlying wall is not left exposed. Those are Sherwin-Williams’ project specifications, not measurements from Lauren’s foyer.

If you use a nail gun, identify wiring and plumbing hazards, wear the protection required by the tool instructions, and keep everyone clear of the firing path. If you are not comfortable with the equipment or the wall contains uncertain utilities, use a qualified installer. The reveal itself does not state the board dimensions, spacing, fastener type, or wall condition, so do not copy the 2½-inch example as though it were the original project’s plan.

How Lauren applied the Glidden paint

The application sequence reported in the reveal is straightforward: trim first, then the larger wall areas. The order keeps the brush work from forcing you to cut against freshly rolled paint and lets you maintain a wet edge as you move around the room.

  1. Start with the trim. Use a brush on the boards, battens, corners, and other narrow sections. Work the paint into repaired areas without leaving pools at joints.
  2. Feather the edges. Before the paint sets, soften the brush marks at the transition between trim and the adjacent wall. Feathering reduces a visible ridge where the brush-loaded area meets the rolled field.
  3. Roll the broader surfaces. Lauren says she used a mini roller after brushing the trim. Load it evenly, roll in manageable sections, and avoid repeatedly working paint that has begun to tack.
  4. Allow the first coat to dry. Her account describes the paint as drying quickly on this project. Drying time depends on temperature, humidity, ventilation, film thickness, and the substrate, so use the product label’s recoat guidance for your current paint.
  5. Apply the second coat. She says two coats were needed because the new light color was covering darker wall paint and wood. Inspect under the room’s actual lighting before deciding whether additional coating is necessary.
  6. Remove tape and inspect. Check corners, nail holes, seams, and the lower edge of each batten. Touch up only after the surface is dry enough for the paint to accept another coat without dragging.

Why the two-coat result should not be generalized

Two coats were part of Lauren’s solution for a specific color change and substrate mix. A light color over dark paint can reveal uneven hide, while raw or differently absorbent wood can change the appearance from one board to the next. Conversely, a similar color over a sound, previously painted wall may require less material. The post does not establish a universal coat count, square-foot coverage figure, or guaranteed hide for current formulations.

What the remaining paint does and does not tell you

Lauren says about a cup or two remained from the gallon after the hallway and foyer were painted. That observation is useful for understanding that her gallon was not exhausted, but it is not a repeatable coverage calculation. Her wall dimensions, film thickness, application speed, and absorption were not reported in a way that would let you convert the remainder into a reliable area-per-gallon estimate.

What the author liked about the paint

Lauren describes the paint as inexpensive and says she was happy with its coverage and finish. She also reports quick drying and a smooth result. Her direct disclosure is clear: “Glidden Paint was so wonderful to send a gallon of paint to me to try out.” That sentence explains why the review should be read as a sponsored product experience rather than an independent, blinded comparison.

Reported impression Reasonable takeaway What is not established
Favorable coverage The author felt two coats covered her darker wall paint and wood satisfactorily A universal coverage rate, hide score, or superiority to another brand
Smooth finish Her completed foyer and hallway looked smooth to her after application Performance on every wood species, wall texture, or future formula
Quick drying The project dried quickly enough for her workflow A fixed drying time under different temperature or humidity conditions
Inexpensive She considered the paint a low-cost choice in her project context A current price, regional value judgment, or total project cost

No named statistic or independent quantitative study accompanies this particular reveal. The article therefore supports a transparent first-person account, not a ranking of paints.

How to read the Glidden reference in 2026

The post’s dates are important: it appeared on September 2, 2015, and was updated on May 11, 2022. Paint lines, tint systems, packaging, retailers, and color libraries can change over that interval. Glidden’s current catalog lists interior paints and primers, and the catalog identifies Amazon as a retailer for some listed products, but the cited catalog does not verify that Duo Paint + Primer in Crisp Linen White is still sold under the same name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, search the current catalog by product category and confirm the exact label, sheen, tint availability, and retailer listing. If the historical name is absent, ask a retailer or the manufacturer whether a current product is a direct continuation; do not assume that a similar-sounding label has identical chemistry or coverage. Keep a record of the color formula and sheen you actually purchase so future touch-ups can be matched.

A practical current-paint checklist

  • Intended surface: Confirm that the product is formulated for interior walls, trim, or both surfaces you plan to coat.
  • Sheen: Choose the finish for the way the hallway is used and the amount of reflected light you want. The original project used semi-gloss.
  • Hide information: Read the current label for coverage and recoat guidance, then adjust for dark colors, bare wood, repairs, and texture.
  • Color availability: Verify that the historical Crisp Linen White name or formula is available in your market. A color name alone does not prove a match.
  • Cleanability and durability claims: Treat these as current product claims that must be checked on the label or technical sheet, not inferred from the 2015 reveal.
  • Price and retailer: Compare the current price and stock where you live. Lauren’s statement that the paint was inexpensive describes her time and purchase context.

Decision framework for your own foyer or hallway

Choose the layout before choosing the paint

Mark the verticals, account for door and baseboard trim, and decide where the pattern terminates at corners. A paint sample cannot correct a layout that leaves a narrow, awkward final panel. The original reveal does not publish its spacing, so your wall measurements should drive the design.

Decide whether boards will be painted before or after installation

Prepainting can make the faces and edges easier to coat, while painting after installation can hide small fastener repairs and caulk lines in one continuous pass. Sherwin-Williams’ separate guide describes painting planks before attaching them, then installing them with a nail gun after they dry. If you follow that approach, plan for a final touch-up coat over nail holes and caulk.

Match tools to the geometry

A brush gives control at inside corners, around fasteners, and along trim edges. A mini roller, the tool Lauren reports using, can cover the open areas between or beside battens without the texture associated with a much larger roller. Keep a consistent roller cover and pressure so adjacent panels do not develop visibly different textures.

Troubleshooting a board-and-batten paint job

Symptom Likely project issue Correction
Dark patches show through the light color Insufficient hide over the old color or uneven absorption in wood and filler Let the coat dry, inspect in normal light, and apply the label-recommended additional coat. Spot-prime persistent stains with a compatible primer.
Raised lines at seams Joint was not filled or sanded level before painting Sand the ridge carefully, remove dust, refill if needed, and blend the repair before recoating.
Caulk line cracks or remains visible Joint moved, the bead was too large, or the caulk was not allowed to cure Cut out loose material, use a paintable product suited to the joint, tool it smooth, and follow its cure time.
Brush marks remain at the edge Too much paint was left in the cut-in area or the edge was reworked after it began to set Feather while the paint is workable; after drying, sand only as needed and apply a thin, even touch-up.
Roller texture changes from panel to panel Uneven loading, pressure, or working time Use the same mini roller cover, maintain a wet edge, and stop re-rolling sections that have started to tack.
Tape pulls the edge or leaves residue Tape remained too long, the edge was not sealed, or the paint had not reached the right cure stage Score stubborn edges lightly, remove tape steadily, and follow the tape maker’s surface and timing guidance on future sections.

A repeatable workflow for your own reveal

  1. Measure and map the wall. Record wall width and height, mark openings, and sketch the board-and-batten pattern. Do not substitute the Sherwin-Williams example dimensions for your own measurements.
  2. Choose and condition the materials. Select boards, battens, filler, paintable caulk, sanding supplies, brush, mini roller, roller covers, tape, and floor protection. Let wood acclimate as recommended for the product and room.
  3. Prepare the wood. Sand edges, fill knots and nail holes, smooth seams, remove dust, and caulk the joints that should appear continuous.
  4. Install safely or prepaint strategically. If using a nail gun, follow its safety instructions and check for hidden utilities. If prepainting, leave a plan for filling fastener holes and touching up after installation.
  5. Protect adjacent surfaces. Tape trim and cover floors, hardware, and nearby walls that are not part of the color change.
  6. Brush the trim first. Work methodically and feather the edge into the adjacent surface.
  7. Roll the open areas. Use the mini roller approach reported in the reveal, keeping the application even and maintaining a wet edge.
  8. Evaluate after drying. Check the dark-to-light transition, repaired areas, corners, and sheen under daylight and room lighting.
  9. Apply the next coat only when permitted. Follow the current product label rather than the historical project’s timing. Lauren used two coats in her conditions.
  10. Finish the inspection. Remove tape carefully, touch up nail holes and caulk lines, clean tools as directed, and keep the leftover paint labeled with the color, sheen, and date.

Bottom line on the DIY board-and-batten reveal and Glidden review

Lauren’s reveal is most useful as a transparent project record: careful filling, caulking, sanding, taping, brush work, feathering, and mini-roller application produced the foyer and hallway finish she wanted. She reports that Glidden Duo Paint + Primer in Crisp Linen White semi-gloss covered her darker walls and wood in two coats, dried quickly, and left a smooth finish, with a small amount remaining from the gallon.

Those results belong to her 2015 project, and Glidden supplied the paint. Use the preparation and sequencing ideas, but verify every current product detail before purchasing. The historical review can inform your plan; it cannot establish that the same formula, color, coverage, drying behavior, or price applies to a 2026 project.
