The most reliable DIY boho furniture makeover combines a calm painted base with one deliberate layer of pattern or texture. A documented side-table project used chalk mineral paint, furniture wax, and peel-and-stick wallpaper in a recessed surface. The maker chose the wallpaper first, then matched the paint to it—a useful way to keep the finished piece coordinated instead of visually busy.

You can adapt that approach to a table, console, cabinet, dresser, or shelf. The result depends less on a specific “boho” color than on sound preparation, a paint system suited to the existing surface, controlled contrast, and a compatible protective finish.

What makes a painted furniture makeover look boho?

Boho style is a flexible combination of collected-looking color, organic or geometric pattern, visible texture, and relaxed contrast. The sources do not establish one required palette, pattern, or painting technique, so treat the following as design choices rather than rules:

  • A subdued or earthy painted body paired with a botanical, geometric, or woven-looking accent.
  • Color blocking that separates an interior, frame, drawer, or panel from the outer structure.
  • A low-sheen finish that lets minor surface variation read as vintage rather than glossy and new.
  • Original or refreshed hardware that supports the piece’s period and pattern.
  • A single focal treatment—such as wallpaper in a recessed top—rather than pattern on every surface.

Start with the furniture’s shape. A recessed tabletop, cabinet back, drawer front, or framed panel naturally contains a pattern. Broad uninterrupted surfaces can carry a color block or a simple painted border without needing additional decoration.

Six makeover ideas you can execute with the documented methods

1. Neutral base with a patterned inset

Use a quiet paint color on the frame and legs, then place peel-and-stick wallpaper inside a recessed top or panel. The documented side-table project scuffed and painted the recessed area before applying the wallpaper. Its sequence was deliberate: choose the wallpaper first, then coordinate the paint color to a tone in the pattern.

  1. Measure the recess and note its deepest and widest points.
  2. Choose a botanical or geometric paper with enough contrast to read at the furniture’s viewing distance.
  3. Match the paint to a background, leaf, or secondary color in the paper rather than trying to duplicate its dominant color exactly.
  4. Paint and finish the surrounding furniture before installing the paper.
  5. Apply the wallpaper with the factory edge aligned to the straightest side, peeling the backing back gradually while smoothing.

This arrangement gives you a strong boho signal without requiring freehand motifs or multiple paint colors.

2. Two-color console with a painted interior

A console can have one color on its exterior and another inside the shelf space or cabinet. Sherwin-Williams demonstrates this approach with Ancestral Gold SW 6407 and Merlot SW 2704. Those colors are one documented palette example, not a universal boho prescription.

Paint the section that is harder to reach first. Once it is complete and sufficiently dry for tape according to the paint maker’s directions, protect it with painter’s tape while coating the adjoining section. Remove the tape carefully rather than allowing a heavy, wet ridge to bridge the colors.

3. Low-sheen vintage table

Benjamin Moore’s furniture guidance notes that lower sheen can camouflage minor imperfections and contribute to a vintage feel. Use that advantage on a thrifted table whose surface is structurally sound but not perfectly uniform. Keep the color simple and let the shape, wood detail, or hardware provide interest.

High gloss creates a sleeker, more modern appearance and makes surface flaws more visible. Choose it only when that sharper look—and the extra attention to preparation it demands—is intentional.

4. Painted frame with a wallpapered back panel

A bookcase, cabinet, or open shelving unit can carry wallpaper on its back panel while the frame stays painted. The panel is protected from much of the handling that a tabletop receives, making it a practical place for a pattern. Remove shelves where practical, finish the frame, and install the paper on the clean, dry back panel after measuring.

  • Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
  • Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
  • Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
  • Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint

5. Color-blocked drawers or doors

Use one color on the carcass and a second on drawer fronts or doors. This is the same separation principle as the two-color console, but the moving parts make preparation especially important. Remove drawers and hardware, label parts so they return to their original positions, and paint each face on a stable, supported surface.

6. Hardware-led refresh

Paint the furniture in one coordinated shade and make the hardware the contrasting element. Remove handles and other hardware before preparation; reinstall the originals or add replacements only after the paint system is ready for handling. A simple painted body keeps the piece from competing with ornate pulls, woven knobs, or aged metal details.

Before you paint: choose a sound piece and identify its surface

Inspect the furniture before buying materials. Look for loose joints, damaged veneer, swollen particleboard, peeling coating, or water damage. The cited guides do not provide a formal condition-grading system, so do not assume every thrifted piece is a suitable candidate for a cosmetic makeover. Stabilize or repair structural problems first, or select another piece.

Identify whether you are working over bare wood, previously finished wood, or a slick manufactured surface such as laminate. Adhesion needs differ. Bare wood may need an adhesion primer; a previously coated piece generally benefits from cleaning, light abrasion, and a primer compatible with the new paint; a very smooth surface may require especially careful deglossing and a product specifically rated for adhesion.

Set up safely and keep the parts organized

Work in a ventilated area with a stable temperature and a surface you can protect from drips. Cover the floor and nearby objects. Remove drawers, shelves, doors, and hardware when practical. Place screws and fittings in labeled bags, and mark parts discreetly if several pieces look alike.

Take photographs before disassembly. They provide a reference for hinge orientation, drawer order, and hardware placement. Support doors and drawers so wet edges do not touch the drop cloth or work surface.

Preparation: the step that determines adhesion

1. Wash away dirt and oil

Sherwin-Williams describes washing furniture with soapy water to remove dirt and oils. Benjamin Moore recommends a gentle grease remover, a clean-water rinse, and thorough drying. Use one of those approaches according to the soil on the piece and the cleaner’s directions; the important result is a residue-free, dry surface.

  • SMOOTH-TO-TOUCH MATTE FINISH: Chalked delivers a soft, ultra-matte finish that feels as good as it looks. Whether your style is modern, minimalist, boho, or classic, this smooth, velvety texture adds a refined, trendy-yet-timeless touch to any project

Pay attention to hand-contact areas, around knobs, under the top overhang, and inside corners. Cleaner left behind can interfere with primer, so rinse where the product requires it and allow the wood or manufactured panel to dry fully.

2. Repair holes and cracks

Fill unwanted holes, dents, or cracks with a suitable patching compound. Let the repair dry completely, then sand it smooth so the transition cannot be seen through the new finish. Repairs are especially noticeable under a high-sheen coating or a thin, light color.

3. Scuff-sand rather than stripping by default

Benjamin Moore’s method calls for light sanding with 100–150-grit sandpaper to give primer a better surface, not automatically removing the entire existing finish. That grit range belongs to its method; it is not a universal prescription for every paint system or substrate.

Sand enough to reduce gloss and create a consistent surface, concentrating on slick areas and edges. Avoid cutting through veneer or rounding crisp profiles. After sanding, remove dust and let the surface dry before priming.

Primer and paint: match the system to the substrate and use

Primer is part of the manufacturer methods cited for furniture. Sherwin-Williams identifies an adhesion primer as an option when painting bare wood, while Benjamin Moore describes acrylic primer followed by its ADVANCE furniture paint. These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not a universal product list.

Choose products that are labeled for the material and the expected use. A decorative side table, frequently touched drawer front, and lightly used display cabinet do not experience the same abrasion. Check the paint maker’s instructions for recoat windows, ventilation, application temperature, and whether a separate sealer is recommended.

Plan the finish before you start. Chalk mineral paint can be paired with furniture wax, as in the documented boho side-table project. Another cited method uses water-based polyurethane over painted furniture. Wax and polyurethane are not interchangeable by default; follow the compatibility and care instructions for the specific paint and topcoat.

Tools: when to brush, roll, and tape

  • Brushes: use them for edges, corners, profiles, legs, and places a roller cannot reach cleanly.
  • Mini rollers: use them on broad, flat areas when the paint system allows rolling. They can reduce visible brush marks on tabletops, doors, and cabinet sides.
  • Painter’s tape: mask a completed color block while working on the adjoining section. Press the edge firmly enough to prevent seepage, but remove tape in line with the paint maker’s guidance so it does not lift the finish.
  • Fine-grit sanding supplies: reserve them for controlled surface preparation and between-coat smoothing when the product instructions call for it.

Do not overload a brush or roller. Thin, even coats are easier to control around corners and less likely to form curtains on vertical surfaces. Keep a wet edge where possible and inspect the piece from several angles before leaving the coat to dry.

How to add peel-and-stick wallpaper without crooked seams

Wallpaper works best as a contained accent. A recessed top, drawer front, cabinet back, or framed panel gives you a clear boundary and hides small dimensional variations better than an exposed outside edge.

  1. Measure the finished area. Record width and depth in several places; furniture openings are not always perfectly square.
  2. Cut with extra margin. Leave enough excess to trim accurately after positioning. Keep the pattern direction consistent across adjoining pieces.
  3. Prepare the surface. The documented project scuffed and painted its recessed surface before applying paper. The area must be clean, dry, and free of loose dust.
  4. Align the factory edge. Start at the straightest boundary, not necessarily the most visible one.
  5. Peel gradually. Pull the backing away a little at a time while smoothing the exposed adhesive from the center toward the edges.
  6. Trim after adhesion. Use a sharp blade and a straightedge where appropriate; replace the blade if it begins to drag or tear the paper.
  7. Check corners and seams. Press down lifting edges before they collect dust, and avoid stretching the paper to force a pattern into alignment.

Keep the backing on the unused portion while you work. That lets you reposition the uncommitted section without exposing the full adhesive surface at once.

Finish choices: wax versus water-based polyurethane

Finish approach Where it appears in the documented methods What to verify before use
Furniture wax Used over chalk mineral paint in the documented boho side-table project. Confirm that the wax is intended for the chosen paint, follow its application and buffing directions, and observe its care guidance.
Water-based polyurethane Described in The Home Depot’s furniture-paint guide as a sealing option. Confirm compatibility with the paint, sheen, application method, ventilation, and recoat instructions on the selected product.

Neither method supplies a universal cure time. Drying and curing vary by product, film thickness, temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Do not load drawers, reinstall doors, or place heavy objects on the piece until the selected manufacturer says the coating is ready for that use.

A complete DIY workflow

  1. Choose the design anchor. If wallpaper is part of the plan, select it first and identify one or two paint colors from the pattern.
  2. Inspect the furniture. Confirm that the structure and substrate are suitable for a cosmetic makeover.
  3. Photograph and disassemble. Remove drawers, shelves, doors, and hardware where practical, and keep every part identified.
  4. Protect the workspace. Cover floors and nearby surfaces, and provide ventilation appropriate to the products you will use.
  5. Clean. Wash with soapy water or use a gentle grease remover, rinse as directed, and dry thoroughly.
  6. Repair. Fill holes and cracks, allow the patch to dry, and sand it smooth.
  7. Scuff-sand where appropriate. Benjamin Moore specifies 100–150 grit in its own method; choose preparation compatible with your actual substrate and coating.
  8. Remove dust. Wipe the piece clean and wait until it is dry.
  9. Prime. Select a primer suited to the surface and paint system, including an adhesion primer when the manufacturer calls for one.
  10. Paint details first. Brush edges, corners, legs, and profiles before rolling broad flat areas.
  11. Build color in controlled coats. Respect the product’s recoat window and avoid handling pieces while the film is soft.
  12. Mask for color blocking. Protect the completed section before painting the adjoining color.
  13. Install the wallpaper accent. Measure, cut with margin, align the straight edge, peel gradually, smooth, and trim.
  14. Apply the compatible protective finish. Use wax or water-based polyurethane only when the paint and finish makers indicate compatibility.
  15. Reassemble after readiness. Reinstall hardware, shelves, doors, and drawers when the coating is ready for handling, then place the furniture in service according to the product’s care instructions.

How to choose among the ideas

Your priority Most suitable documented direction Why
Pattern without repainting every surface Painted frame with wallpaper in a recess or back panel The paper is contained, while the paint supplies a coordinated base.
A stronger color statement Two-color console or color-blocked drawers Separate sections create contrast without requiring a painted motif.
A forgiving vintage appearance Low-sheen painted finish Benjamin Moore notes that lower sheen can camouflage minor imperfections and add vintage flavor.
Maximum protection planning Choose the compatible wax or polyurethane system before painting The documented methods use different finishes, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Minimal visual change Single-color body with refreshed hardware The hardware supplies the accent while the paint unifies the furniture.

Common failures and how to correct them

Paint fisheyes, craters, or patchy adhesion

These symptoms often point to grease, cleaner residue, dust, or an incompatible surface. Stop adding coats, allow the film to dry, clean the affected area, scuff-sand as appropriate, remove dust, and use a compatible primer before repainting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wallpaper lifts at an edge

An edge may have been applied over dust, damp paint, an uneven corner, or stretched paper. Press it flat if the adhesive still permits correction. If the surface is contaminated or the adhesive has lost tack, trim the damaged section and replace it with a correctly measured piece rather than burying the edge under finish.

Brush marks dominate a tabletop

Use a suitable mini roller on broad flat areas if the paint allows it, keep coats even, and avoid repeatedly brushing paint that has begun to set. A low-sheen finish can make minor texture less conspicuous, but it cannot compensate for ridges or runs.

Tape pulls up the neighboring color

The underlying coat may not have been ready for masking, or the tape may have been pressed too aggressively. Let the area dry according to the product instructions, use a tape intended for delicate painted surfaces, and remove it carefully. Touch up with a small brush after the surface is ready.

Drawers or doors stick after painting

Extra film thickness on mating edges can reduce clearance. Keep coats thin on contact areas, allow full readiness before reassembly, and avoid forcing a drawer that is still curing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lead and hazardous-coating safety

Sherwin-Williams warns: “Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead.” The guide says exposure can cause brain damage and other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women, and calls for a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator, appropriate containment, and cleanup when controlling lead or other hazardous substances.

If the existing coating could contain lead, do not treat ordinary dry sanding as routine preparation. Consult the applicable local health authority for testing, containment, disposal, and renovation requirements. Keep children, pregnant people, and pets away from the work area, and prevent contaminated dust from spreading through the home.

Care after the makeover

Use the care instructions for the exact paint and protective finish. Clean gently rather than scrubbing, avoid standing water on painted or wallpapered areas, and lift objects instead of dragging them across the surface. Recheck hardware after the first period of use, because loose pulls can chip paint around their mounting points.

A boho makeover succeeds when the decorative decision and the technical system support each other: a pattern sized for the panel, a paint chosen for the substrate, preparation that removes adhesion problems, and a finish compatible with both the paint and the furniture’s use.
