A DIY brick fence is not simply a row of bricks set on a shallow trench. It is a freestanding masonry structure that must resist wind and other lateral loads, transfer those forces into a suitable footing and soil, shed water, and comply with local rules. Before buying fired clay masonry bricks, define the fence line, height, length, gates, corners, returns, soil conditions, and exposure. Then choose a structural system and foundation with project-specific design input.
The safest DIY role is usually planning, material handling, and supervised workmanship after the support system has been established. A building department or qualified masonry/structural professional should confirm the foundation, reinforcement, connections, and permit path for your site rather than relying on generic internet dimensions.

What makes a brick fence a structural project?
A freestanding fence has no building frame to brace it. Wind pressure, gate movement, uneven soil, slope, accidental impact, and seismic shaking can all create overturning or sliding forces. The wall, piers, returns, reinforcement, footing, drainage, and soil therefore have to work as one load path.
The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) describes several support arrangements for concrete masonry fences: a cantilevered wall on a continuous footing, a wall spanning between pilasters on separate pads or caissons, and a wall supported by returns. Those categories help explain the design choices, but the CMHA tables and details are based on stated concrete-masonry assumptions and are not a prescriptive design for a fired-clay brick fence. Review the guide for its design context at CMHA’s Concrete Masonry Fence Design.

The footing’s job is to resist the overturning and sliding produced by lateral loads. Its required size, depth, reinforcement, anchorage, and bearing conditions depend on the actual wall, wind and seismic exposure, soil, and local code. A rule such as “use a footing this many inches deep” or “a brick wall is safe up to this height” is not universal.
Define the fence before choosing materials
Draw a scaled site plan before ordering anything. Mark property lines from reliable records or a survey, existing walls, trees, drainage routes, utility locations, buildings, and the proposed gate swing. Record dimensions at every change in direction instead of treating the fence as one continuous length.
Record the geometry
- Overall length and intended finished height, including any cap or coping.
- Gate openings, pedestrian doors, service openings, and locations where hardware will attach.
- Corners, wall returns, end conditions, steps, curves, and changes in grade.
- Piers or pilasters required by the chosen structural concept, with their widths shown separately from the infill wall.
- Any section that could retain soil. A retaining function changes the pressure and drainage problem and should not be treated as an ordinary fence panel.
Record the site forces
- Prevailing wind exposure, nearby open terrain, and large gates that can attract high pressure.
- Seismic conditions applicable to the address.
- Visible soil type, fill, erosion, groundwater, expansive behavior, and existing slopes.
- Drainage patterns and places where water could collect against the footing or wall.
These observations are inputs for a structural design, not substitutes for one. Photograph and measure unusual conditions so a designer or building official can evaluate them.
Choose a support concept, not a generic wall recipe
Support arrangement determines how lateral force reaches the ground. Compare concepts against your site’s height, length, openings, returns, soil and footing conditions, and required appearance.
| Support concept | How it carries load | Questions to resolve | Scope warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantilevered wall on a continuous footing | The wall and footing act together; the footing develops resistance to overturning and sliding. | What footing geometry, reinforcement, soil bearing, drainage, and wall-to-footing connection are required? | CMHA discusses this for concrete masonry. Do not copy its dimensions for fired clay. |
| Wall spanning between pilasters on pads or caissons | Pilasters collect wall forces and transfer them to individual foundations; the panel spans between supports. | How far apart can supports be, how are panels connected, and how do gates alter the load path? | Concrete-masonry assumptions in the CMHA guide do not establish a clay-brick span. |
| Wall supported by returns | Perpendicular returns provide bracing at ends or intervals. | Are returns long and founded enough for the loads, and do property lines allow them? | Suitability must be checked for the actual fired-clay assembly and site. |
A designer may combine approaches, such as piers at gates and returns at corners. The correct choice is the one that has a continuous, verified load path—not the one that uses the fewest bricks.

Use the correct masonry guidance
The Brick Industry Association (BIA) states that its Technical Notes are written for fired clay brick. Its resource index covers building-code requirements, mortar, brick selection, dimensioning and estimating, water penetration, construction workmanship, garden walls, and related topics. It warns that applying those recommendations to concrete brick or another non-clay product can produce different, potentially detrimental performance. Use the index at Brick Industry Association Technical Notes and confirm that the note applies to the unit you selected.
Select units by exposure and dimensions
Choose fired clay masonry bricks rated and specified for the project’s exposure, appearance, and intended use. Verify actual length, height, width, tolerances, absorption, texture, and color range with the manufacturer or supplier. Those dimensions control the bond, coursing, pier size, openings, and quantity takeoff.
Select mortar as part of the wall system
Mortar selection is not a color-only decision. It must be compatible with the brick and exposure and must provide the required bond and movement behavior. Follow the applicable BIA mortar guidance and the brick manufacturer’s information rather than adopting a recipe from a different unit or climate. Keep the selected mortar specification with the drawings so a substitute material is not chosen accidentally.
Plan the top and water path
A fence top should shed water instead of presenting a horizontal ledge that saturates the wall. The coping, cap, flashing where applicable, and end details must be designed for the chosen clay-brick assembly. Do not transfer a coping dimension from a concrete-masonry detail to clay brick without checking compatibility, support, and drainage.

The 2024 International Residential Code, Chapter 4 is a model-code reference, not proof that your jurisdiction has adopted it or that every provision applies to a fence. A surfaced Florida provision from the 2010 Florida Building Code, Chapter 21 is historical and jurisdiction-specific; it addressed certain masonry fences capable of serving as building walls, including exterior-wall foundations and tie columns. It cannot be presented as a current national requirement.
Confirm ownership and easements as well. A fence placed on a boundary may require neighbor agreement, and a footing or return that crosses the line can create a property dispute even when the visible wall appears compliant.
Estimate quantities only after the design is fixed
A reliable takeoff cannot be calculated from “a brick fence” alone. First freeze the brick dimensions, wall thickness, bond, height, panel lengths, pier and return sizes, openings, cap system, joint size, and waste allowance. Then measure each wall segment and count special units separately.

- Break the plan into straight panels, piers, returns, steps, and gate sections.
- Calculate face area and volume using the selected unit and joint dimensions, not a nominal brick size.
- Subtract openings only when their lintel, jamb, and connection details are defined.
- Add the designed piers, pilasters, caps, coping, and any brick below grade that the specification requires.
- Apply a documented waste allowance for cuts, breakage, color sorting, and future matching units.
- List mortar, reinforcement, connectors, flashing or drainage components, formwork, and weather-protection materials separately from brick counts.
The BIA resource index includes a technical note on dimensioning and estimating; use it after the design is established. Do not let a supplier’s generic coverage figure override the actual bond and details on your drawings.

- Confirm the line and site: Locate the property boundary, utilities, easements, drainage, and access for deliveries. Stake every corner, return, gate, and elevation change.
- Obtain approval: Submit the required drawings and calculations, pay permit fees if applicable, and schedule inspections before covering work.
- Finalize the structural system: Establish footing type, dimensions, reinforcement, wall-to-footing connection, piers, returns, gate anchorage, movement joints, and drainage from site loads and soil conditions.
- Order matching materials: Buy the specified fired clay units, mortar components, reinforcement, connectors, caps, and protection materials. Check deliveries for damage, lot variation, and the correct dimensions before installation.
- Prepare and inspect the foundation: Excavate only after utility clearance. Keep excavation stable, manage water, place reinforcement and concrete exactly as designed, and obtain the required inspection before backfilling or covering.
- Set out the masonry: Dry-check corners, piers, openings, and coursing so cuts do not accumulate at a gate or end. Confirm that hardware and embedded connections align with the approved details.
- Lay the brick: Maintain the specified bond, joint profile, alignment, plumb, level, and connection details. Keep mortar joints fully filled where the specification requires and tool exterior joints for the stated exposure.
- Protect unfinished work: Cover fresh masonry from rain, runoff, freezing conditions, and contamination. Prevent soil or construction debris from blocking drainage paths.
- Finish the top and interfaces: Install the designed coping or cap, gate hardware, sealants, and transitions at returns or adjacent structures. Ensure water drains away from the wall and footing.
- Document completion: Photograph reinforcement and concealed connections before covering, retain product data and inspection records, and note the brick lot for future repairs.
Workmanship details that control durability
BIA workmanship guidance emphasizes filling mortar joints, tooling joints for exterior exposure, and protecting unfinished brickwork from moisture. These are not cosmetic steps: voids, smeared joints, or saturated fresh mortar can create paths for water and reduce durability.
Joint execution
Keep bed and head joints consistent with the approved specification. Tool exterior joints at the correct stage so the surface is compact and sheds water. Remove droppings before they harden in cavities or drainage spaces, and do not wash mortar residue across finished brick.
Weather protection
Have covers ready before mixing mortar. Protect both the wall and stored bricks from prolonged wetting, mud splash, and freezing. Do not continue simply because the calendar is convenient; follow the mortar and masonry specification for temperature and curing conditions.
Water management
Grade soil away from the fence where possible, keep cap joints and interfaces sealed as designed, and preserve any specified drainage or weep path. A fence that also holds back soil needs a separate retaining-wall drainage design.
Special conditions that change the design
Gates and hardware
Gates concentrate impact and cyclic loads at hinges, latches, and adjacent piers. The pier foundation, embedded hardware, and clearances must be designed together. Attaching a heavy gate to an unreinforced decorative column is not an adequate load path.

Slopes and stepped walls
On a slope, decide whether the top follows a continuous line or steps by course. Each step changes footing elevations, drainage, and the appearance of joints. Never leave a portion of the wall acting as an unplanned retaining wall.

Openings and long runs
Openings interrupt the wall’s ability to distribute force, while long uninterrupted runs can attract large lateral loads. The structural design may require piers, returns, joints, or a different support arrangement. Do not infer spacing from a neighboring fence.
Connections to buildings or columns
Readers sometimes describe this task as “securing a wall to a brick column.” The connection must identify which element is structural, how movement is accommodated, and where forces enter the foundation. A user-generated discussion such as this Reddit question can illustrate the wording people use, but it is not a technical detail or approval for a particular connection.
When DIY stops being a sensible option
Consider hiring a qualified designer or masonry contractor when the fence is tall, close to a property line, exposed to strong wind or seismic forces, founded on fill or a slope, connected to a building, carrying a gate, or retaining soil. Professional input is also prudent when the authority requires sealed calculations, when access makes excavation hazardous, or when you cannot verify utilities and boundaries.
You may still perform non-structural tasks—layout assistance, material staging, cleaning, and supervised bricklaying—if the approved plan and local inspection process allow it. Responsibility for the load path, foundation, reinforcement, and compliance should remain with the competent professional identified in the permit documents.

| Symptom | Likely planning or workmanship issue | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Wall leans or rotates | Insufficient footing resistance, poor soil assumptions, unbraced length, or water weakening the base. | Stop adding load, keep people clear, and obtain a structural assessment. Do not simply add mortar or a surface brace. |
| Horizontal or stepped cracking | Settlement, movement restraint, inadequate joints, or incompatible support between panels and piers. | Document crack location and movement, control water, and have the support system evaluated before patching. |
| White deposits or damp joints | Moisture entering through an uncapped top, saturated fresh work, poor drainage, or improper cleaning. | Find and correct the water path; use cleaning and repairs compatible with the fired clay and mortar. |
| Gate drags or pulls a pier out of alignment | Hardware loads exceeded the pier or foundation design. | Stop using the gate until the pier, anchors, and footing are checked; do not tighten hardware as the only fix. |
| Quantity shortage or mismatched color | Takeoff ignored actual dimensions, special units, cuts, or lot variation. | Reconcile the approved takeoff and retain spare units from the same production lot where possible. |
A practical go/no-go checklist
- The exact fired clay brick and mortar system are identified.
- The fence line, height, openings, returns, piers, slopes, and any retaining function are drawn.
- Wind, seismic exposure, soil, drainage, and gate loads have been considered.
- The footing and reinforcement design comes from project-specific engineering or an approved prescriptive provision that actually applies.
- The building department has confirmed permits, setbacks, inspections, and local code adoption.
- Quantities are based on the selected dimensions, bond, joints, openings, and waste allowance.
- Weather protection, safe excavation, and a plan for keeping drainage paths clear are ready before mixing mortar.
If any item is unresolved, pause before purchasing a pallet of brick. A finished fence can look straight while still having an inadequate foundation or an unsafe connection; resolving the design first is faster and less expensive than rebuilding failed masonry.
