A successful DIY cane nightstand makeover comes down to three decisions: choose a stable piece with a suitable opening, prepare the existing surface for its specific finish, and use an attachment method that matches the construction. Cane can become a cabinet-door insert, drawer-front panel, or framed stool surface, but the cutting allowance and installation sequence change for each design.

Choose a nightstand that can accept cane
Start with structure, not decoration. A bedside table, small cabinet, or stool should feel solid before you paint it. Tighten loose screws, repair a wobbly joint, replace damaged feet, and make sure a door or drawer operates correctly. Cosmetic work will not correct movement in the carcass, and a flexible opening can put stress on the cane after installation.

Look for an insert-friendly surface
- Cabinet door with a removable panel: An open-backed door is the simplest arrangement for hidden staples. A glass-front cabinet can be converted by removing the glass and using it as a tracing template for the replacement cane panel.
- Drawer or door with a framed opening: A groove or purpose-built frame can accept cane secured with spline. This gives the front a finished perimeter rather than leaving fasteners visible.
- Inset area on a flat surface: Adhesive can work when the webbing, substrate, and adhesive are compatible. It is a project-specific choice, not a universal replacement for staples or spline.
- Stool or open frame: A cane webbing kit may provide the materials for cutting, adhering, and adding spline around the edge. The construction differs from stapling a panel behind a cabinet door.
Check the door and hardware before disassembly
Photograph hinges, catches, pulls, and screw locations before removing anything. Label hardware in a small bag. If the existing panel is glass, remove it safely and keep it as a pattern only after confirming that it is intact and the replacement opening will use the same orientation. Do not force a panel out of a glued frame; alter the design or seek an appropriate repair method if the frame is not intended to come apart.
Plan the cane panel and measure the opening
Measure the actual opening after removing trim, glass, or a loose insert. Record width and height at several points; older furniture may not be perfectly square. Also measure the depth available behind the opening and note where hinges, drawer slides, or stops could interfere.
Measure for the attachment method, not just the visible hole
The finished visible area is not automatically the cutting size. A stapled panel needs enough material beyond the opening for the fastener line on the concealed back. A spline installation needs cane that reaches the groove or channel specified by the frame. An inset adhesive panel may be cut closer to the recess, depending on the edge that will be concealed. Decide how the edge will be hidden before making the final cut.
Lay out the weave so its direction looks intentional on the front. Mark a centerline on both the furniture and the cane, then check that the pattern will not end with an awkward partial repeat at one side. Keep the sheet flat while marking and use the panel template when one is available. Buy enough pre-woven cane to cover the complete panel plus the edge allowance required by your selected method; the tutorials use different constructions, so there is no single universal extra measurement.

Dry-fit before cutting
- Place the cane over the opening with the intended front facing outward.
- Align the weave to your center marks and tape one edge temporarily.
- Open and close the door or drawer, checking that the cane will not hit the cabinet, hinges, or hardware.
- Mark the final cut line only after confirming the concealed attachment area.

Prepare the furniture for paint
Remove hardware and, where practical, take the door or drawer front off the cabinet. Clean away dust, grease, and residue before sanding or applying any coating. Protect the work area and mask surfaces that will remain unpainted. The correct preparation depends on what is already on the furniture.
Laminate or slick manufactured board
Laminate is not prepared like bare wood. One laminate makeover used a bonding product before paint; follow the selected product’s label for cleaning, application, ventilation, and recoat requirements. Lightly abrade the surface only as directed, remove all sanding dust, and test the system in an inconspicuous spot. Paint applied directly to a glossy laminate can fail even when the color looks correct at first.
Unfinished wood
Remove mill marks and rough areas with a suitable sanding sequence, then vacuum and wipe away dust. Inspect end grain, knots, and repaired areas because they may absorb paint differently. Use the primer or sealer specified for the paint system rather than assuming that a product intended for laminate or metal will perform the same way on wood.

Check for peeling, chalking, wax, or an unknown slick finish. Remove loose coating and clean contaminants before deciding whether to sand, prime, or repaint. If the old finish is sound, a light scuff and a compatible adhesion product may be sufficient; if it is failing, stabilize it before adding color.

Spray-paint technique
A stool makeover recommends several light spray-paint coats instead of one heavy coat. Keep the can moving, overlap passes consistently, and allow the label’s specified interval between coats. If a bump or bit of dust appears, let the coat harden as directed, sand the defect lightly, remove the dust, and continue. Spray in a well-ventilated area while wearing the mask and other safety equipment required by the current product label.

Step-by-step DIY cane nightstand makeover
- Stabilize the furniture. Repair loose joints, tighten hardware, and verify that doors and drawers move correctly.
- Document and remove hardware. Photograph hinge positions, remove pulls and catches, and take off the door or drawer front if that improves access.
- Remove the existing insert. In a glass-door conversion, remove the glass and retain it as a tracing template. Protect your hands and work surface while handling it.
- Clean and inspect the substrate. Remove grease and dust, identify laminate, bare wood, or an existing coating, and correct damage before painting.
- Make a pattern and dry-fit the cane. Trace the opening or old panel, orient the weave, and confirm the required hidden edge before cutting the webbing.
- Cut the cane. Use the selected pattern and leave the attachment allowance required by staples, spline, or the inset design. Make clean cuts and keep the weave square to the frame.
- Prepare and paint the furniture. Apply the surface-appropriate bonding product, primer, and paint in the sequence required by their labels. For spray paint, use light coats and sand away cured bumps between coats when necessary.
- Install the webbing. Staple it to the concealed back when the frame allows, apply compatible adhesive for an inset design, or fit cane and spline into a groove-based frame. Work from the center toward the corners so the weave remains aligned, and follow the chosen system’s instructions rather than combining methods casually.
- Allow curing. Keep the panel undisturbed for the coating and adhesive cure time printed on the products. Do not rely on a generic drying estimate.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the door or drawer, reinstall hardware in its original locations, and open and close it repeatedly to check for rubbing, loose edges, or interference.
Finish the look without overcomplicating it
Cane already supplies visual texture, so the paint and hardware can either frame it quietly or make it the focal point. A neutral painted cabinet with natural cane keeps the weave prominent. A darker frame creates stronger contrast, while a lighter color makes a small bedside piece feel less visually heavy.
Coloring the cane is optional. One makeover stained the cane for a weathered appearance and painted metal hardware separately. If you choose either treatment, test it on an offcut first: stain absorption and the interaction between a finish and pre-woven cane can vary. Keep the panel removed while applying any finish that could wick into the furniture or affect the adhesive bond.

The cane edge is visible from the front
The cutting allowance or frame detail may not match the attachment method. Remove the panel only if doing so will not damage the weave, then check whether the frame was intended for hidden staples, a groove and spline, or an inset. Add trim only when the furniture design can support it; do not cover a misfit with a random extra layer.

The weave looks crooked
Stop before securing more of the perimeter. Release the temporary edge or the most recent fasteners, realign the centerline, and work outward again. A pattern that is square to the opening at the beginning is easier to keep straight than one corrected after the entire edge is attached.
Paint scratches or lifts
Identify whether the failure is poor cleaning, an incompatible coating, insufficient adhesion preparation, or inadequate cure time. Remove loose paint, clean the area, and test the complete preparation-and-paint sequence on a hidden section before repeating the repair across the nightstand.
Adhesive will not hold
Check the adhesive label for the exact materials, surface condition, open time, pressure, and cure requirements. Laminate, sealed wood, dusty cane, and contaminated surfaces can all change the result. If the furniture provides a concealed stapling surface or a proper spline groove, redesigning the attachment may be more reliable than adding unknown adhesive.
The door or drawer rubs after installation
Inspect the cane’s back edge, staples, spline, and any adhesive squeeze-out for interference. Also check that the panel was reinstalled in its original orientation and that hinge screws are seated. Remove only the material causing the obstruction and preserve the weave alignment.

Safety and care
Use eye protection when cutting, removing glass, or driving staples. Keep blades and staple tools pointed away from your hands, and dispose of sharp offcuts promptly. Spray products require ventilation and the mask and protective equipment specified on their current labels; never spray in an enclosed bedroom or near an ignition source.
After the makeover has fully cured, dust the cane with a soft brush or vacuum attachment on low suction. Avoid soaking the webbing or saturating the frame. If a section loosens, stop using the door or drawer until you identify whether the failure is at the fastener, spline, adhesive, or furniture joint.
Budget and schedule realistically
No comparable general cost or time estimate is established for this project. Your total depends on whether you already own the nightstand, how much cane the panel requires, the selected paint system, and whether the design needs staples, adhesive, or spline. Plan for separate time to repair the furniture, prepare the surface, apply multiple coats, install the cane, and wait for curing; the labels on your actual products control the schedule.
