Turn a thrifted farmhouse sign into finished-looking vintage wall art by covering its existing face with a fitted art print and building a narrow wood frame from lattice strips. The sequence is straightforward: fit the artwork first, attach the top and bottom frame pieces, measure and attach the sides, then fill, sand, stain and decoupage the print onto the canvas. The same basic approach can also be used on a wooden farmhouse sign.
This project follows Lauren’s Bless’er House tutorial, “DIY Canvas Frame Vintage Art from Old Farmhouse Signs”, published September 27, 2021 (the page also displays February 12, 2022). The tutorial does not report a project price, completion time, finished dimensions, durability testing or conservation performance, so those details depend on your materials and conditions.

What you are making
The finished piece is a thrifted sign canvas with a new, simple wood perimeter and a vintage-style print adhered over the original sign face. Instead of constructing a deep shadow-box frame, you attach flat lattice strips around the sign’s edges. The strips hide the raw perimeter and create a clean border that can be stained to suit the room.
Start with a sign whose surface is sound enough to receive paper and adhesive. A stretched canvas farmhouse sign is the tutorial’s main starting point; a wooden farmhouse sign is another possible surface. Because thrifted signs vary, treat the sign itself as the source of all dimensions rather than assuming a standard poster or canvas size.

Materials and tool choices
| Item | How it is used | Choice or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Thrifted farmhouse sign | Provides the existing canvas or wood panel. | The method is described for a canvas sign and can also be used on a wooden sign. |
| Vintage art print | Covers the original sign face. | The tutorial uses downloaded vintage floral and bouquet artwork that was printed. You can print at home or use an office-supply print service such as Office Depot. |
| Lattice strips | Become the four frame sides. | Buy enough straight stock to cover the measured top, bottom and side lengths. Measure your sign before cutting or purchasing. |
| Measuring tape, pencil or pen, scissors | Transfer the sign outline to the print and size each frame piece. | Scissors are used for trimming the paper in the source method. |
| Finish nails and hammer | Secure the lattice to the sign perimeter. | Use a nailer only if you already own one and can control its placement for the thin frame stock. |
| Wood filler and fine-grit sandpaper | Hide nail holes and smooth the repaired areas. | Let the filler dry before sanding. |
| Wood stain | Colors the new lattice frame. | The example uses Minwax Special Walnut that the author already had; another stain can be selected for your room. |
| Mod Podge | Adheres and seals the paper print to the sign face. | The tutorial applies it to both the back of the print and the front of the canvas. |
| Books | Provide weight while the print dries. | Use a few clean, flat books that cover enough of the artwork to hold it down. |
Choose the surface and artwork before cutting
Inspect the thrifted sign
Check that the canvas is attached securely and that the sign is not badly bowed or damaged where the lattice will sit. A wooden sign can be used in the same general workflow, but its rigid face may require different nail placement than a stretched canvas. Brush away dust and remove loose debris so the print and frame pieces can lie flat.
Select a print that can be trimmed
Download vintage floral or bouquet artwork, print an image yourself, or order a print from an office-supply store. The key practical issue is fit, not a particular paper source. If the printed sheet and sign are not matching standard sizes, plan to trim the sheet rather than forcing it to cover an incorrectly sized area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the print face down during the tracing step. This protects the visible side while you mark the outline on the back. If the artwork has a directional composition, identify the top before tracing so you do not cut it upside down.

Fit the artwork to the sign
- Place the print face down. Use a clean, flat work surface and position the sign over the back of the print.
- Trace the sign. With a pencil or pen, trace around the sign on the back of the paper. Follow the actual perimeter instead of relying on a nominal size printed on the package.
- Cut on the traced outline. Use scissors to trim the print to the sign’s shape. Work slowly at corners so the paper does not extend beyond the future frame.
- Check the fit dry. Lay the trimmed print on the sign without adhesive. Confirm that the artwork reaches the edges you intend to cover and that no important part of the image will be hidden by the lattice.
Completing this fit before building the frame matters because the frame pieces overlap the perimeter. Once the lattice is nailed in place, access to the edges is reduced.
Build the lattice frame
Cut and attach the top and bottom
- Measure the top and bottom. Measure the sign’s top and bottom edges and transfer those lengths to two lattice strips.
- Cut the first pair. Cut one strip for the top and one for the bottom. Keep the cuts square enough that the pieces meet the later side strips cleanly.
- Position the strips. Place the lattice along the top and bottom edges, keeping the frame faces aligned and the strips seated against the sign.
- Nail them in place. Use finish nails and a hammer to attach the top and bottom strips. Drive nails where they hold the lattice securely without splitting the narrow stock or damaging the sign.
Measure the sides after the first pair is attached
- Measure the remaining openings. With the top and bottom strips in place, measure the exposed distance between them on each side.
- Cut the side strips. Cut the left and right lattice pieces to those measurements. The tutorial describes making the side pieces just slightly longer than the first two attached strips, so check the actual fit against your sign rather than copying a fixed dimension.
- Test both sides. Hold each piece in position and confirm that the corners meet without leaving a visible gap or extending too far past the sign.
- Nail the sides. Attach the side strips with finish nails, completing the four-sided frame.
Measuring the sides only after the top and bottom are installed accounts for the material those pieces occupy. It is more reliable for a thrifted, nonstandard sign than cutting all four strips from an assumed width and height.
Fill, sand and stain the frame
- Fill the nail holes. Press wood filler into every visible nail hole in the lattice. Smooth away excess filler so less material has to be sanded later.
- Allow the filler to dry. Follow the filler’s own drying direction; do not sand while it is still soft.
- Sand with fine-grit paper. Sand the repaired spots until they are level with the surrounding wood. Remove loose sanding dust before applying stain.
- Apply stain. Stain the lattice frame, including the filled and sanded areas. The tutorial’s example uses Minwax Special Walnut, but the color decision is yours.
- Let the stain dry. Keep the piece undisturbed until the stain is dry enough for the paper-application stage. Avoid placing the print on a tacky surface.
Staining after filling and sanding lets the frame read as one finished border instead of leaving bright nail holes around the perimeter. Protect your work surface from filler, sanding dust and stain, and use the ventilation and handling precautions specified on the products you choose.

Attach the vintage print with Mod Podge
- Prepare the print and sign. Make sure the trimmed print is oriented correctly and that the stained frame is dry. Keep the artwork’s visible side clean.
- Brush adhesive onto the print. Apply Mod Podge to the back of the art print.
- Brush adhesive onto the sign. Apply Mod Podge to the front of the canvas, covering the area where the paper will sit.
- Lay the print down. Align the trimmed edges with the sign and place the print onto the adhesive-coated canvas.
- Smooth it in place. Work from the center toward the edges to press the paper onto the canvas and reduce trapped air or wrinkles. Keep the print aligned as you smooth.
- Weight the surface. Set a few books on top of the print to hold it flat while it dries. Use clean, flat covers and distribute the weight rather than concentrating it on one small area.
- Leave it undisturbed. Allow the adhesive to dry before moving, hanging or handling the finished sign. The tutorial does not specify a drying time, so use the product’s label directions and the condition of the piece.
This process is a craft decoupage application, not a documented conservation treatment. The source does not establish archival safety, long-term adhesion, resistance to humidity or suitability for valuable original artwork. For an irreplaceable print or artwork, use a method recommended by a qualified conservator instead of relying on this project.
Decisions that change the finished look
| Decision | Option described by the tutorial | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Sign surface | Stretched canvas farmhouse sign or wooden farmhouse sign | Measure the actual perimeter and adapt nail placement to the surface you have. |
| Artwork source | Vintage download, home printer or office-supply print service | Choose a source that can produce a sheet large enough to trace and trim for your sign. |
| Fastening tool | Hammer with finish nails, or a nailer you already own | Use the tool you can control accurately on narrow lattice strips; the source does not compare their performance. |
| Frame color | Stain, with Special Walnut as the example | Test the color on scrap lattice if the final shade matters, because the tutorial gives no universal color result. |
Troubleshooting common problems
The print is the wrong size
Do not build the frame around an untrimmed sheet and hope the edges disappear. Trace the sign on the back of the print and cut it first. If the artwork cannot cover the intended face after trimming, print it again at a more suitable size or choose a different image.
A corner has a gap
Recheck the side measurement with the top and bottom strips fully seated. The side pieces are measured after the first pair is attached, and the tutorial notes that they may be made just slightly longer than those initial strips. Test-fit before driving nails.

Nail holes remain visible
Apply enough wood filler to fill the holes, wait for it to dry, and sand with fine-grit paper until level. Staining before this repair is complete will make the holes harder to disguise.

The paper shifts during application
Dry-fit and orient the print before brushing on adhesive. Once both surfaces are coated, lower the print deliberately, align one edge, then smooth across the face. Books placed on top while it dries help hold the print flat, but they cannot correct a print that was positioned incorrectly.
The paper shows bubbles or wrinkles
Smooth from the center outward while the adhesive is workable, using even pressure rather than repeatedly lifting the sheet. Keep the work surface flat and use distributed book weight during drying.

The stain looks uneven around repairs
Uneven color can result when filler and bare wood absorb stain differently. Sand the filler flush and remove dust before staining; if the appearance is still unsuitable, adjust the finish on a test piece before touching the completed frame.
Hanging and caring for the finished piece
Let the adhesive and stain dry fully according to their product directions before installing the artwork. Handle it by the frame rather than pressing on the paper face. Hang it where the completed sign can remain flat and dry; the tutorial supplies no tested limits for humidity, sunlight or long-term exposure, so avoid assuming the craft finish provides those protections.
Keep the original sign’s story visible in your choices: a restrained lattice profile and a vintage floral or bouquet image preserve the farmhouse character without requiring a complicated joinery project. Because every thrifted sign differs, the most important measurements are the ones you take yourself immediately before cutting.
Source and project limits
The construction sequence and material list come from Lauren’s Bless’er House tutorial, DIY Canvas Frame Vintage Art from Old Farmhouse Signs. That tutorial identifies the canvas-sign starting point, the possible wooden-sign variation, the tracing-and-trimming method, the lattice order, nail-hole repair, staining and the Mod Podge-and-books drying step. It does not provide a measured cost, project duration, finished size, durability rating or conservation test, so this guide leaves those variables open rather than presenting guesses as specifications.
