You can build useful closet storage and replace bifold doors with hinged French doors, but the two parts depend on different measurements. Shelves must be fastened for the wall and load they carry; French doors must fit the finished opening and swing without striking furniture or walls. Measure the closet opening and available floor space first, then choose between an adjustable track system, custom modular boxes, bifolds, or hinged doors.

Start with the opening, not the door or shelving kit

Measure the finished closet opening before ordering any door. Record width at the top, middle and bottom; height at both jambs and in the center; jamb depth; and whether the opening is square. Note baseboards, casing, flooring transitions and nearby walls. Lowe’s bifold instructions begin with removing the old doors and measuring the opening, while its replacement guidance says to read the manual for the new door system before installation. Door sizes, hardware and stock vary by product and market, so never assume a nominal door size will fit.

Also draw the room in plan view. Mark where each door leaf would travel when open, including knobs and trim. A French-door pair needs a clear area in front of the closet for both leaves to swing fully. A bifold folds into itself, so it usually occupies less room in front of the opening. That difference can decide the project before style does.

  • Check the opening width, height, depth and square.
  • Identify the material behind the jamb and above the opening.
  • Measure the proposed swing arc to the nearest wall, cabinet, bed or light switch.
  • Confirm that shelves, rods and stored items will not block the door hardware.
  • Keep the door manufacturer’s installation manual available during fitting.

Bifold or French doors: the practical difference

Lowe’s describes bifold doors as “doors that fold in on themselves as they open.” They are often suitable for linen or corner closets where a swinging leaf could hit a wall. French doors are hinged and can provide a broad, conventional opening, but Lowe’s cautions: “Just make sure there’s enough clearance for both doors to swing out fully.” These are selection principles, not a guarantee that a particular bifold jamb can accept hinged doors.

Decision point Bifold doors French (hinged) doors
Room footprint Leaves fold toward the sides of the opening, reducing the forward swing area. Both leaves swing into the room; the full arc must remain clear.
Access at one time Access depends on the track and folding configuration; folded leaves can still occupy part of each side. Opening both leaves can expose nearly the entire opening, subject to the frame and door design.
Existing frame Uses a track, pivots, guides and brackets designed for that bifold system. Requires jambs capable of receiving hinges and a frame that can carry the selected doors; a universal retrofit is not established.
Installation work Typically involves track and bracket placement, hanging, then adjustment to prevent rubbing. Involves hinge placement on the door, matching hinge locations on the frame, fastening and alignment checks.
Best fit Closets beside a wall or in a tight passage where a swing would collide. Rooms with clear floor space and a preference for a traditional hinged appearance.

Choose the door type only after the swing and frame checks. A prehung French-door unit may simplify hinge alignment, but it still has to fit the opening and may require jamb or casing changes. Standard hinges can mount to many frames, according to the general closet-door guidance, but that statement is not a structural assessment of your existing bifold opening.

Can you replace bifold closet doors with French doors?

Sometimes, but treat it as a frame-and-clearance project rather than a direct swap. Remove or open the existing system enough to inspect the jambs, header and floor. Look for solid material where hinges and latch hardware would be screwed, signs of movement or water damage, and an opening large enough for the selected door unit. If the old bifold has a shallow or nonstandard jamb, the new doors may need a rebuilt frame or a prehung unit.

Feasibility checks

  1. Confirm the finished dimensions. Compare the measured width and height with the exact door-unit requirements, including any required rough-opening allowance.
  2. Verify hinge support. The hinge side must have sound wood or an appropriately reinforced frame. Do not rely on drywall or loose casing alone.
  3. Plot the swing. Use a taped outline on the floor or a cardboard door leaf to check both leaves, knobs and trim at full opening.
  4. Check interior interference. Shelves, rods and baskets should not collide with the door edge, hinges or latch when the doors open.
  5. Read the door manual. Follow the selected system’s hinge spacing, shimming, fastener and clearance requirements instead of adapting a generic diagram.

If any check fails, retain bifolds or redesign the opening before buying doors. A conversion that looks attractive but binds, sags or blocks storage is not an improvement.

Installing or adjusting bifold doors

Lowe’s rates its bifold installation as an intermediate project with a “One Day” estimate. That is the retailer’s project label, not an independently measured completion time. The listed tools include a drill and bits, hacksaw, level, screwdriver, tape measure and safety glasses. Materials include bifold doors, a track kit and the system’s hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the old doors and measure the opening again after the track and casing are exposed.
  2. Mark the track location at the header, keeping it level and following the manufacturer’s setback.
  3. Install the track and pivot or jamb brackets with the supplied fasteners. Pre-drill where the instructions require it.
  4. Hang each door on its pivots and guides. Keep fingers clear while lifting and wear eye protection when cutting track.
  5. Adjust the pivots and guide hardware so the leaves meet evenly, do not rub the floor and do not hit the header.
  6. Open and close the doors repeatedly, checking the reveal, latch and floor clearance before installing or replacing trim.

A hacksaw may be needed when a track must be cut to the measured opening. Do not shorten a track or alter pivot locations unless the door instructions allow it.

Two ways to build DIY closet shelves

There are two separate approaches. An adjustable wall-mounted system uses a hang track, vertical standards, brackets, shelves, a closet rod and supports. A custom modular project builds freestanding boxes from plywood and other panels. They solve different problems: the first changes quickly as storage needs change; the second creates furniture-like modules with fixed dimensions.

Feature Adjustable wall system Custom modular boxes
Construction Track, standards, brackets and shelves attached to the wall. Cut and assemble plywood, poplar boards and hollow-core bifold door panels into boxes.
Adjustability Brackets can be repositioned on standards as needs change. Dimensions are established during cutting; later changes generally require rebuilding.
Wall dependence High: fasteners must match drywall, studs or concrete. Lower for a freestanding unit, although anchoring is still prudent where tipping is possible.
Tools and skill Drill, level, tape measure and appropriate cutting tools; kit instructions govern details. Straightedge-guided saw, sanding and finishing supplies; Lowe’s labels the project intermediate.
Best use Changing wardrobes, shelf-and-rod layouts and maximum vertical flexibility. Uniform cubbies, stacked storage and a built-in furniture appearance.

Installing adjustable shelving into drywall

ClosetMaid’s ShelfTrack guidance says to match the fastener to the wall type and recommends fastening into studs whenever possible. For the strongest and most adjustable installation, place the hang track flush to the ceiling and fasten it into the wood header. Drywall-only mounting requires anchors rated for the expected load; the correct anchor and screw depend on the wall construction and the shelf manufacturer’s instructions.

Layout and spacing rules

  • Keep standards no more than 24 inches apart.
  • Place a standard no more than 4 inches from each shelf end.
  • Match bracket length to shelf depth, observing any exceptions in the guide for Shelf & Rod configurations.
  • Use a level to mark the track and each standard; a small error at the track becomes a visibly sloping shelf.
  • Load the finished shelves gradually and watch for movement before storing heavy items.

Wall-specific fastening

For drywall over framing, locate studs with a stud finder or small test holes and drive structural fasteners into them. Where a standard falls between studs, use a suitable hollow-wall anchor in addition to the specified screws; an anchor is not a substitute for a header or stud when the load is substantial. Masonry walls require masonry-rated fasteners and the drilling method stated by the system instructions. Do not use one fastener type for every wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the track first, then snap or screw standards into position and attach brackets. Wire shelving can be cut with a bolt cutter or hacksaw; rods can be cut with a pipe cutter or hacksaw. Deburr cut ends and install caps or other protective pieces supplied with the system.

Building modular box shelves

The Lowe’s Modular Stacking Shelves project uses 3/4-inch plywood, poplar boards and hollow-core bifold door sets, plus optional materials for finishing. The workflow is furniture construction, not a replacement for a wall-mounted adjustable kit.

  1. Plan the number and outside dimensions of the boxes around the closet width, height and door swing.
  2. Mark repeated panels with a square and cut them using a straightedge-guided saw.
  3. Dry-fit the pieces before fastening so the boxes remain square and the doors or casing will clear them.
  4. Sand edges, then prime and paint the parts before final assembly where that makes access easier.
  5. Assemble each box on a flat surface, check diagonals for square and stack only on a stable base.
  6. Anchor tall or stacked units when a tip hazard exists, leaving the door path unobstructed.

Because plywood thickness, panel construction and hardware vary, use the project’s cut list and the actual material dimensions rather than assuming every sheet measures exactly as labeled.

Coordinate shelves, rods and door swing

Design the storage and door as one system. A shelf that ends beside a hinge may need a shorter bracket or a setback so the door opens fully. A hanging rod placed too close to the front can interfere with a knob or the edge of a French door. With bifolds, folded leaves may occupy the side zones where a shelf or vertical standard would otherwise sit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Draw the shelf depth and door swing on the same plan.
  • Leave the manufacturer’s required reveal around jambs, hinges and latch hardware.
  • Keep tall boxes, baskets and rods below any area swept by the door edge.
  • Test with temporary cardboard shelves or painter’s tape before drilling permanent holes.

Troubleshooting common failures

The French doors hit a wall or furniture

Do not force the leaves or move hinges casually. Recheck the swing arc, then consider a smaller door, a different hinge swing, a recessed casing solution or bifolds. Any change must still meet the door manual’s clearances.

A door rubs the floor or header

Check whether the frame is level and the hinges or pivots are fully seated. Bifold systems are designed to be adjusted so leaves do not rub or strike the header. For hinged doors, shim and fasten according to the manufacturer rather than removing material prematurely.

Shelves sag or standards pull away

Reduce the load, verify bracket depth and spacing, and inspect every fastener. Reattach into studs or the header where possible, or replace an unsuitable drywall anchor with a wall-appropriate system rated for the load.

The closet feels narrower after shelving

Measure the shelf depth against the door path and hanging clearance. Move standards, reduce depth or choose modular boxes with a different footprint before adding more hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much clearance do French closet doors need?

They need enough unobstructed floor and wall space for both leaves to swing fully, including knobs, trim and the final door reveal. Mark the complete swing arc in the room and compare it with the selected door manual before ordering.

What is the safest way to fasten closet shelves to drywall?

Locate studs or the wood header and fasten there whenever possible. Where a standard falls between framing members, use wall anchors specifically rated for the expected load and compatible with the shelving instructions; drywall alone is not structural support.

Are modular plywood shelves interchangeable with adjustable track shelving?

No. Modular shelves are assembled boxes with dimensions fixed during cutting, while track systems use standards and movable brackets. Choose based on whether you value furniture-style construction or future adjustability.
