Make a faux-capiz flower pendant by folding translucent frosted window film into double petals, edging each petal in antique gold, and gluing the pieces to a reused glass globe. The original 2015 project finished at about 16 inches across and used roughly one and a half packages of film. Those measurements are project-specific; your globe, opening and film package may require different quantities.

What this faux-capiz pendant is—and why the material matters
This design creates a shell-like flower around a glass globe rather than using real capiz shell. Each petal is cut from frosted privacy window film, folded down its center and attached with high-temperature hot glue. The film supplies a milky, translucent surface; the glass globe provides the round structure; and the gold-painted edges define the overlapping flower pattern.
Capiz-inspired shades are valued for the way translucent pieces soften a lamp’s output. In a 2026 design feature, Greg Natale described capiz lighting as organic and pearlescent, while Alex Bucklin noted that translucent shells diffuse light instead of producing the harder glow associated with clear glass. Those are designers’ observations, not photometric test results, but they explain the visual target: a warm, softened glow rather than a sharply exposed bulb.

The tutorial author developed the globe version for bedside lighting. She first tried wax paper, including four layers ironed together, but found the petals too flimsy. The vellum available to her was also too thin. She selected Gila frosted privacy window film, describing it as a thicker, more durable plastic. Current formulations, package sizes and performance may differ, so treat that product choice as a starting point rather than a guarantee.
Check the globe, opening and electrical parts before crafting
The most important fit issue is hidden above the petals. Shade holders and glass globes are not standardized: opening diameters, retaining rings and neck shapes vary. If you are reusing a complete light, measure the globe opening and confirm that its original holder still seats securely. If you are sourcing parts separately, match the globe to the holder before cutting a single petal.
- Measure the globe’s outside diameter to estimate the finished shade size.
- Measure the neck opening and the holder’s retaining ring; the ring must clamp the globe without forcing or wobbling.
- Confirm that the socket, cord, strain relief and canopy are compatible with the holder and mounting location.
- Plan access to the bulb. A dense petal arrangement should not make routine bulb replacement impossible.
The original maker reused a globe and shade holder from an older light. She adapted an IKEA Hemma cord to a socket that fit her holder and wrapped the cord in jute. That is an account of one installation, not a generally safe rewiring procedure. Altering a socket or cord can create shock, fire and code-compliance hazards; have a qualified electrician handle wiring changes and verify the completed fixture for your jurisdiction.

Make the double-petal pieces
1. Draw a template that suits your globe
Cut one paper test petal first. Hold it against the globe and check how far it should extend from the eventual attachment line. The finished design uses a double-petal form: two lobes meet at a central crease, creating a shallow V that can catch the globe’s curve. Make the first template slightly oversized rather than cutting the entire film supply immediately; a test piece reveals whether the lobes overlap attractively and whether the crease sits flat.
2. Trace on the dull side
Place the template on the film’s dull side and trace around it with a pencil. Keep the grain and orientation consistent if the film has a visible directional texture. Group the tracings close together to reduce waste, but leave enough space for scissors to turn around each outline without nicking neighboring petals.

3. Cut and sort
Cut the shapes carefully, then sort them into a tray or stack. Remove pieces with torn points, deep nicks or pencil marks that cannot be hidden by the gold edging. Making all the cuts before gluing lets you work in a steady rhythm and makes it easier to reserve matching pieces for sparse areas later.
4. Edge both faces in gold
Run the oil-based gold marker around the perimeter of every petal, then repeat on the reverse face. Let the ink dry according to the marker label before folding. The outline is decorative, but it also visually separates adjacent translucent pieces. The original author worried that the gold might cast strong shadows and reported seeing none in her setup; that observation should not be treated as a lighting guarantee for another globe or bulb.
5. Fold and glue the center crease
Fold each petal along its centerline so the two lobes form a shallow angle. On a heatproof surface, lay a narrow line of high-temperature hot glue along the crease. Press only the crease together, leaving the lobes free. Work in small batches so the glue remains hot enough to bond and so the plastic does not slump under unnecessary heat.
Attach the petals to the glass globe
1. Invert and support the globe
Turn the globe upside down and support it in a padded bowl, ring or folded towel. The support should hold the glass steady without pressing on the neck. Because the surface is curved, test the first few petals at several positions before committing to a full row.
2. Establish the neck and bottom zones
Keep the holder opening and any retaining ring clear. Place a few petals near the lower or widest area first, then add pieces toward the neck while checking that the holder can still be installed. Avoid gluing over threads, grooves or contact surfaces that must remain clean.

3. Use an irregular arrangement
Attach petals in a deliberately uneven pattern. Vary the spacing and rotate neighboring double petals so the eye does not see a rigid repeating ring. Press the glued crease to the glass until the adhesive sets, but do not squeeze the lobes flat; their slight angle is what creates the flower-like volume.
4. Build coverage gradually
Work around the globe in small sections, rotating it as you go. Leave temporary gaps so you can inspect the silhouette from several angles. Fill the gaps only after the major shape looks balanced. A completely regular grid tends to reveal the construction, while modest irregularity makes the film read as layered shell pieces.
5. Remove stray adhesive
Let the globe cool fully, then pick away visible glue strings with clean, dry fingers or a blunt tool. Do not scrape the glass aggressively or drag softened adhesive across the film. If a petal lifts, reheat only the loose crease and add a small amount of fresh glue rather than flooding the edge.
Paint and finish the holder
Remove or mask the shade holder before painting. Cover socket contacts, threaded electrical parts and any surfaces that must remain conductive or mechanically engaged. Apply antique-gold paint in thin coats and allow complete drying before reinstalling the holder. The original project used this finish to connect the holder visually with the gold petal outlines.
If you wrap the cord in jute for decoration, keep the wrapping clear of the socket, canopy connections, strain relief and any point where heat could accumulate. Jute is not electrical insulation and should never conceal damaged cord or an improvised splice.

Bulb, heat and wiring: limits of the tutorial
The author reports using a 9.5-watt LED bulb labeled as a 60-watt replacement and says it stayed cool to the touch in her installation. That is a personal observation, not a safety certification. Film thickness, adhesive, globe ventilation, socket rating, bulb shape and ambient temperature all change the result.
- Use only a bulb whose wattage, base and shape are permitted by the socket and fixture instructions.
- Prefer an LED with a low actual wattage, but do not assume every LED runs cool enough for every enclosed shade.
- Keep film and hot glue away from direct contact with the bulb and any hot metal parts.
- Do not cover ventilation openings or trap the bulb against the globe.
- After installation, switch the light off immediately if you smell melting plastic, see discoloration, hear arcing or notice heat that seems abnormal.
- Have a qualified electrician inspect any rewired socket, cord, plug, ceiling connection or mounting hardware.
Never use the author’s reported bulb temperature to approve a different combination of film, glue, globe, socket or bulb. The project is a craft shade, not a tested electrical design.

Not every faux-capiz light uses a glass globe. A separate Homedit project builds a wire-grating canopy, punches discs from laminated rice paper and sews strands down their centers before tying them to the grid. A 2015 video description lists a related wire-basket design using parchment and wax paper, thread, a 17-inch wire flower basket, metallic spray paint and hot glue. Neither source provides controlled durability or safety testing, so choose by construction preference rather than an assumed lifespan.

| Approach | Shell material | Support | Joining method | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flower globe | Frosted privacy window film | Reused glass globe and holder | Folded petals bonded with hot glue | You already have a compatible globe and want a full, round flower silhouette. |
| Wire-grating canopy | Laminated rice-paper discs | Wire grating | Discs sewn into strands and tied to the grid | You prefer a cascading canopy and are comfortable sewing repeated strands. |
| Wire-basket strand build | Parchment and wax paper | 17-inch wire flower basket | Thread, needle or sewing machine, tape and hot glue | You want a lightweight basket form and already have paper-cutting and sewing tools. |
The globe method concentrates labor in hundreds of individual cuts, folds and glue points. Strand methods shift that labor toward punching discs, sewing centerlines and tying rows to a framework. Select the structure first; the shell material and joining technique follow from it.
Troubleshooting common build problems
Petals look limp
Check the material before changing the glue. The original maker rejected layered wax paper because it remained too delicate. If your film is substantially thinner than expected, test a folded double layer or a different translucent sheet on one area before committing to the whole globe.

The pattern looks like a spiral or checkerboard
Stop adding petals in rows. Rotate the globe, vary the distance between creases and place a few pieces at intermediate angles. Irregular placement is a design decision, not a flaw, provided the holder opening and bulb clearance stay unobstructed.
Glue shows through the front
Use a narrower bead on the crease, press only the bonded center and remove strings after cooling. Excess glue is especially visible where translucent film overlaps, so test the bead size on a scrap petal.

Allow the gold marker to dry fully before folding. Wet oil-based ink can smear onto the film or transfer to neighboring pieces. For a damaged edge, trim the petal cleanly and redraw the outline rather than trying to hide a ragged cut with adhesive.
The globe wobbles in the holder
Do not compensate with extra petals or glue. Recheck the globe diameter, retaining ring and holder match. A loose mechanical fit is an electrical and breakage concern that must be corrected at the hardware level.
Care, removal and future changes
Dust the finished shade with a soft, dry brush or a cool air stream. Avoid soaking the film or saturating hot-glue joints with household cleaner. Before changing a bulb, switch off power and allow the fixture to cool. Support the globe with one hand while removing the retaining ring so the added petal weight does not surprise you.
If you later need to remove a petal, warm the glue joint cautiously and peel from the crease. Excessive heat can deform plastic film or stress the glass. Keep spare film and the original template; replacing one damaged piece is easier when its outline and gold border match the rest of the shade.
Is this the right DIY pendant for your room?
- Choose the flower-globe version if you want a rounded, layered silhouette and can obtain a properly matching globe and holder.
- Choose a strand-and-canopy version if you want a lighter, cascading profile or do not have a suitable globe.
- Use the film method when you need petals with more body than the wax paper tested by the original maker.
- Plan for many repetitive cuts and glue joints; the finished effect depends on patient placement more than on a single complicated technique.
- Treat every electrical connection, mounting point and heat question as a fixture-design issue requiring manufacturer guidance or qualified electrical help.
The result is a customizable faux-capiz pendant whose character comes from translucent film, irregular double petals and a reflective gold edge. The original maker’s approximately 16-inch shade demonstrates one possible scale, not a required standard. Match the pattern, material amount and hardware to your own globe, room and approved electrical setup.
