DIY Faux Stone Porch Skirting Cost vs. Ready-Made Panels: What the 2026 Numbers Show

The 2026 project figures put DIY faux-stone porch skirting at $480.48 and a ready-made panel option at a stated $627.57. Here is what each total includes, why the arithmetic differs by ten cents, and how labor, visual match, corners and current quotes should shape your decision.

On the figures reported in a July 9, 2026 project article, the DIY faux-stone porch skirting cost less in materials than the ready-made alternative, but the saving was modest compared with the labor involved. The reported DIY total was $480.48 including tax. The ready-made estimate was stated as $627.57 including panels, a corner piece, shipping, tax and adhesive, making the stated difference $147.09. The ready-made calculation contains a ten-cent arithmetic discrepancy: its listed component totals add to $627.67, not $627.57. These are one homeowner’s project figures, not current shelf prices or an industry benchmark.

The two estimates at a glance

The comparison comes from a porch-skirt project described by Addicted 2 Decorating on July 9, 2026. The homeowner wanted faux stone that closely matched the Austin stone already on the house. Because an exact ready-made match was not available, she made faux-concrete stones in molds, painted them and attached them as skirting. She also priced a polyurethane panel system in an approximately similar style.

Cost element DIY faux-concrete stones Ready-made panel estimate
Materials and supplies $480.48 including tax Not applicable as a single reported subtotal
Panels Not applicable Five panels at $93.95 each in the historical estimate
Corner treatment Made as part of the DIY work One corner piece at $46.55 in the historical estimate
Shipping and tax Included in the reported DIY total Included in the reported panels-and-corner subtotal of $579.09
Adhesive Included among the DIY supplies Six tubes of Loctite PL-3 were estimated; adhesive with tax was listed as $48.58
Stated project total $480.48 $627.57
Difference using the stated ready-made total DIY is $147.09 lower

The $627.57 ready-made total should be treated as the article’s stated figure. The same article lists $579.09 for panels and the corner, plus $48.58 for adhesive with tax. Those two displayed components total $627.67. If you use the component arithmetic instead, the difference is $147.19. Neither number is a current quote.

What the DIY $480.48 covered

The DIY total was not simply the cost of cement. It covered a mold-making system, casting materials, finishing supplies and installation hardware. The article listed the following items:

  • Eight tubes of GE 100% All Purpose Silicone Caulk for making molds.
  • Cornstarch used with the silicone mold mixture.
  • PVC boards, screws and spray foam for constructing the mold forms.
  • WD-40 used in the mold-making process.
  • Rapid Set Cement All and Rapid Set Mortar for casting the faux stones.
  • Set Control, which affects the working time of the cement mixture.
  • A concrete margin trowel, mortar bag, buckets and containers.
  • Paint and application materials used to make the cast pieces resemble the house stone.

Scrap plywood and a sprayer were already available and were counted at zero cost. That detail matters: a homeowner starting without those items would have a different cash total. The estimate also reflects the quantities purchased for this particular project, not a universal bill of materials for every porch.

Why the list is broader than a panel purchase

Making individual stones requires several stages before anything reaches the porch. The mold has to be built, released, filled with cement, allowed to set, removed, painted and then installed. Each stage consumes materials that a finished panel system incorporates at the factory. The DIY total therefore includes small-ticket supplies that are easy to omit when making a quick comparison.

Conversely, a homeowner may already own some of the tools or have usable scrap material. Count those items at their replacement cost if the goal is to understand the real economic cost, and at zero only if you are deliberately measuring additional cash paid for this project. Keep those two measures separate rather than presenting one as universally correct.

How the ready-made estimate was calculated

Panel quantity and dimensions

The ready-made option considered EverStone polyurethane faux-stone panels in the Castle Rock style. The reported panel size was 49 by 25.5 inches. The homeowner estimated that five panels would cover roughly 230 inches of horizontal width and a 13.5-inch skirting height. At the historical listed price of $93.95 each, the five panels represented $469.75 before the corner piece and other charges.

  • Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.

Those dimensions describe the source article’s yield assumption. They do not guarantee that five panels will cover another porch. Openings, cuts, overlaps, waste, the direction of the pattern and the height of the skirt can all change the required quantity. Measure the longest continuous runs, add the actual corner conditions and then calculate usable coverage rather than dividing total wall area by the nominal panel area.

Corner piece, shipping, tax and adhesive

The estimate allowed one 48-inch-high corner piece to serve the project’s three corners. The listed corner-piece price was $46.55. Panels and the corner, with shipping and tax, were reported together as $579.09.

The calculation also estimated six tubes of Loctite PL-3 adhesive. Adhesive with tax was listed as $48.58. The source article’s stated ready-made total of $627.57 is therefore ten cents lower than the sum of its displayed components. When preparing your own worksheet, preserve each component and let the checkout total from the supplier control the final number.

The price gap does not measure the whole project

A $147.09 material advantage can disappear if you assign even a modest value to the hours required to make the stones. The author described the DIY work as taking substantial time but considered that worthwhile because visual matching was the priority. Someone with limited free time could rationally choose a ready-made system even when its materials cost more.

Labor is not only the time spent pouring cement. Allow for designing and building forms, mixing batches, cleaning tools, waiting for casts to cure, painting many separate pieces, sorting them for installation, cutting pieces at the porch and correcting mistakes. Ready-made panels still require measuring, cutting, fastening or bonding and sealing, but they remove the repeated casting and finishing stages.

A simple way to value your time

  1. Record a realistic range of DIY hours, including setup and cleanup rather than only the time your hands are on the mold.
  2. Choose an hourly value that reflects what that time is worth to you. It can be your paid work rate, a household value you set yourself or simply a comparison between free weekends and the finished result.
  3. Multiply hours by that value and add it to the DIY materials total. Do the same for installation hours with panels.
  4. Compare the two total-cost ranges, not just the receipts.

This calculation is personal, not a market wage claim. It makes the trade-off visible without pretending that every homeowner values a Saturday afternoon in the same way.

It is not a perfectly like-for-like visual comparison

The DIY pieces were intended to reproduce the existing Austin stone on the house. The ready-made Castle Rock panels were considered only a close visual option, and the article noted that the matching corner pieces did not appear to coordinate well with the panels. A lower or higher material total cannot resolve that design mismatch.

Inspect a sample in daylight against the house before ordering a full quantity. Compare color, stone scale, relief depth, grout-line pattern and how the system turns an outside corner. A panel that looks close in a product photograph may read differently beside existing masonry. If the porch is prominent from the street, the visual result may be worth more to you than the material saving.

Exterior suitability and manufacturer claims

Manufacturer pages show that faux-stone systems are marketed for exterior skirting and wall applications, but marketing language is not an independent performance test. GenStone describes its panels as moisture-, pest- and weather-resistant and advertises a 25-year warranty. Those are manufacturer claims; confirm the current warranty, installation limits, substrate requirements and exclusions directly with the manufacturer before relying on them.

Texture Plus publishes faux-stone panel information for skirting and exterior walls, including panel dimensions, cost context and a DIY installation description. The displayed figures are manufacturer-page context, not a quote for this porch. Product availability, shipping zones, colors, corner inventory and current pricing can change.

Questions to answer before buying an exterior panel

  • Is the specific panel rated for the porch location, including exposure to rain, splashback and freeze-thaw conditions where applicable?
  • What substrate, fasteners, adhesive and flashing details does the current installation guide require?
  • How are exposed screw heads, seams and cut edges sealed?
  • Does the warranty require the manufacturer’s adhesive, caulk or fastening pattern?
  • Are corners sold in the same color and texture, and is the corner profile compatible with the panel thickness?

One manufacturer project page attributes this finishing tip to project coordinator Joshua Burck: “Use color-matched GenStone caulk to seal exposed screw heads and seams for a clean, professional finish.” Treat that as the manufacturer’s installation advice and verify that the current product instructions still call for the same method.

Build a current, project-specific comparison

The 2026 figures are useful as a worked example. They are not a substitute for a current cart total. Use this sequence to update the decision for your porch.

  1. Measure every run. Note each length, the finished skirting height, openings and the number of outside corners. Record irregular sections separately instead of averaging them.
  2. Calculate usable coverage. Use the manufacturer’s net coverage after overlaps and cuts, not only the advertised outside dimensions. Add a waste allowance that reflects your pattern and cutting plan.
  3. Price all panel components. Include panels, inside or outside corners, trim, starter pieces, fasteners, compatible adhesive, color-matched caulk and delivery.
  4. Inventory what you own. For a DIY cast system, list molds, boards, release materials, cement, modifiers, tools, buckets, paint and sprayers. Mark items already on hand separately from new purchases.
  5. Use checkout totals. Apply the destination’s sales tax and shipping to the actual quantities. Do not carry forward the historical $93.95 panel price or $46.55 corner price as if they were current.
  6. Add labor time. Estimate casting and installation separately. Include curing and drying periods when they affect how many days the porch is unavailable.
  7. Compare the finished appearance. A cheaper option that fails to match the house may lead to repainting or replacement, which belongs in the risk assessment.

When DIY is the stronger choice

  • Exact appearance matters most. Custom molds and paint can be shaped and colored to the existing stone rather than forcing the porch into a catalog pattern.
  • You already own tools and expendable supplies. The source project benefited from scrap plywood and a sprayer on hand, reducing additional cash outlay.
  • You can spread the work over several weekends. The process rewards patience more than speed.
  • The porch has unusual dimensions. Individual pieces can be made for short returns, low sections and awkward transitions that would create panel waste.

When ready-made panels are the stronger choice

  • Time has a high value. Panels eliminate mold construction, repeated casting and painting of individual stones.
  • Predictable installation matters. A panel system gives you a defined product, documented components and a more uniform pattern.
  • You can accept a close rather than exact match. The Castle Rock option in the source estimate was not presented as an exact Austin-stone match.
  • You need a manufacturer warranty. Confirm the current terms and installation requirements; warranty coverage is only useful when the project follows them.

Common budgeting mistakes

Comparing panels with an incomplete DIY list

Leaving out silicone, mold forms, release materials, buckets, modifiers or paint makes casting appear artificially cheap. Use a line-by-line list like the one in the source project.

Ignoring corners and seams

Flat panel area is only part of a skirting job. Corners, cut ends and seams determine both appearance and material quantity. Price compatible corner pieces and sealants before deciding that panels are cheaper.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using nominal panel area

A 49-by-25.5-inch panel does not provide that entire rectangle as clean, usable coverage after cuts and pattern alignment. Lay out the actual porch runs on paper or a full-scale template.

Treating old prices as current

The $93.95 panel price, $46.55 corner price and both project totals belong to the July 2026 article. Retail prices, tax, freight and stock can change by location and date.

Counting owned tools inconsistently

Either measure new cash spent or include replacement value for every tool in both options. Mixing those methods can create a false saving.

What the numbers mean for this project

Using the source article’s stated totals, DIY saved $147.09 in materials. Using the displayed ready-made components, the gap is $147.19 because of the ten-cent inconsistency. That narrow spread is best read as a project-specific cash comparison, not proof that cast stone is generally cheaper than panels.

The author’s reason for accepting the labor was the closer match to the existing Austin stone. If matching the house is your main objective and you can supply the time, the DIY route may justify its work. If your priority is a faster, more standardized installation and a close visual match is sufficient, a ready-made system can justify the extra material cost. Make the decision only after replacing the historical prices with a supplier quote for your dimensions, corner count, adhesive and delivery.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
