Make a feather barrette by attaching a decoration to a clip base: choose a flat felt feather, a dimensional natural-feather cluster, or a beaded-and-wired feather mount. Each approach uses different materials and gives a different look; the available tutorials do not compare how well they wear.
Choose a design and gather supplies

The projects describe construction options, not tested rankings for comfort, strength, or durability. Pick by appearance and the materials you have rather than assuming one method will hold better.
Make a felt feather silhouette
- Cover the clip. Cut a felt strip long enough to cover the barrette and fold around its ends. Glue it in place.
- Plan the feather. Draw a feather on paper and cut it out as a template. Trace the shape onto a second color of felt and cut it out.
- Attach the shape. Glue the felt feather onto the covered clip backing.
- Cut in the barbs. Make short, shallow diagonal snips from each edge toward the center to suggest feather barbs. Stop before cutting through the central spine so the shape stays connected.
This method gives you control over the feather’s color and outline without arranging loose feathers.

Make a natural-feather cluster
- Arrange the feathers. Position them on a felt base until the cluster has the shape and direction you want.
- Glue them to the base. Attach the feathers to the felt. Add buttons or jewels if desired.
- Mount the cluster. Glue the felt base to the barrette.
- Cover the attachment. Glue a small felt rectangle over the clip-to-base attachment area, as a reinforcing layer.
Try the arrangement on the felt before gluing, since the placement determines how the feathers fan out from the clip.
Make a beaded-and-wired feather mount
- Set the direction. Arrange two feathers facing the same way alongside the clip.
- Prepare the wire. Use pliers to shape the wire and add beads as desired.
- Anchor the wire in the quills. Fit the wire into the feather quills and secure it with tacky glue, following the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
- Attach and dry. Secure the assembly to the hair clip and let the glue dry before wearing it.
This option involves more small components and tool handling than the felt silhouette. The tutorial does not specify a universal adhesive drying time, so use the product instructions rather than guessing.

Use tools and materials carefully
- Follow manufacturers’ instructions for all tools and materials. The Jo-Ann project sheet also recommends adult supervision when children participate.
- Keep small craft materials away from young children’s mouths; a basic feather-barrette project specifically warns about this risk.
- Choose only feathers you may lawfully possess. These craft instructions do not establish rules for particular species or locations, so check applicable local requirements if you are unsure.
