The best DIY fireplace update depends first on whether the fireplace operates. For a working unit, stay on the exterior: clean and paint the brick, refresh an approved mantel finish, or replace the surround only after checking the appliance manual and local clearance rules. For a non-working decorative opening, you can build a faux surround, add a custom mantel, tile the hearth, or compose the wall with paint, wallpaper, and sconces. The 12 ideas below separate those two situations so an attractive makeover does not become a fire-safety problem.

Choose the project scale before choosing a finish

A fireplace makeover can be a surface refresh or a small construction project. Painting an existing exterior brick surround changes color and texture without rebuilding the assembly. New tile, a hearth, or a custom mantel changes materials and may affect clearances, weight, attachment, and the substrate underneath. A faux fireplace is a different category again: it is a decorative composition for a room without an operating appliance, not a method for modifying a working firebox.

Decide which of these three descriptions fits your room:

  • Operating fireplace: Treat the appliance, firebox, chimney or venting, and surrounding construction as a system. Limit DIY work to surfaces and components permitted by the manufacturer and applicable code.
  • Existing but unused fireplace: Do not assume that “unused” means unrestricted. The opening may still be part of a masonry or listed appliance assembly, so verify what can be covered or trimmed.
  • Decorative faux fireplace: You can design the surround and mantel as room décor, but it must never be presented as guidance for installing or altering a real fireplace.

12 beautiful DIY fireplace ideas

1. Paint clean exterior brick a light neutral

A warm white, soft gray, or pale greige can make dated brick read as a calm architectural backdrop. The Lowe’s/Purdy project guide describes cleaning and preparing exterior brick before coating it. Its boundary is explicit: “Do not apply primer or paint to the interior firebox of your fireplace; only exterior brick can be coated.” Keep the color project on the exterior faces and follow the fireplace manufacturer’s instructions before beginning.

For a cleaner result, brush out loose dust and mortar residue, protect the floor and adjacent walls, and work the coating into the brick’s texture without flooding joints. The guide lists a wire brush, TSP cleaner, gloves, primer, paint, brushes, roller covers, painter’s tape, a drop cloth, and rags as preparation and painting supplies. Those supplies do not mean one primer or paint is suitable for every masonry surface or temperature condition.

2. Give the exterior surround a deliberate contrast

Instead of blending the surround into the wall, make it an intentional frame. Charcoal, deep green, muted navy, or a richer version of the room color can outline a pale wall; a lighter surround can separate a dark accent wall from the opening. This is still an exterior-brick coating project, not permission to coat the firebox. Test the color on a small exterior area, observe it in daylight and evening light, and confirm that the selected coating is approved for the surface and location.

3. Refresh the mantel finish where it is allowed

A mantel can change the period and visual weight of a fireplace without moving the opening. Consider a restrained paint color, a clearer wood finish, or a two-tone treatment that leaves the shelf lighter than the supports. Before sanding, painting, or stripping, identify whether the mantel is combustible trim near a working appliance and read both the fireplace instructions and the finish-product directions. A finish that is acceptable on ordinary interior wood may not be appropriate in a heated location.

For an electric unit, do not generalize one manufacturer’s warranty policy to every product. Dimplex’s technical support guidance says painting its mantel voids that unit’s warranty; owners should check the manual for their specific model.

4. Add a tile surround after checking the assembly

Tile creates a crisp border and can shift a room toward traditional, contemporary, or handmade character. Start by identifying the wall or surround substrate, the dimensions of the existing opening, and the manufacturer’s clearance requirements. The cited Lowe’s and Home Depot material presents tile as an upgrade direction, but it does not establish universal tile, adhesive, grout, or substrate compatibility. Select products only after the installation requirements for your fireplace type and surface are known.

Design options include a narrow band around the opening, full-height tile to the mantel, or a simple field tile with a contrasting edge. Draw the layout before applying anything so cut pieces land symmetrically and the opening remains accessible where the appliance requires access.

5. Make the hearth the visual anchor

A tiled hearth can ground the fireplace and provide a clear transition between the wall and floor. The Home Depot faux-fireplace example includes tile in the surround and hearth concept. For a working fireplace, the hearth is part of the appliance’s protective assembly, so appearance alone cannot determine whether a tile build-up, grout line, or substrate is acceptable. Confirm dimensions, noncombustible requirements, and attachment details with the appliance documentation and local authority having jurisdiction.

6. Build a faux surround for a room with no operating fireplace

A decorative surround can supply a focal point in a bedroom, dining room, or living area that has no chimney or appliance. The Home Depot guide’s faux-fireplace project is explicitly cosmetic. Build the surround as furniture-like room décor, with a stable base, secured vertical elements, and a finish that suits the wall. Do not insert an electric, gas, or wood-burning appliance into this concept without switching to the instructions and code requirements for that listed product.

7. Add a custom mantel to the faux project

In a faux installation, the mantel shelf can be the strongest design element. Size it to the wall rather than copying a standard proportion: a longer shelf reads architectural, while a narrower one keeps a small room from feeling crowded. The Home Depot example covers custom-mantel construction as part of a decorative surround. Anchor the assembly to the wall structure, account for the weight of décor, and keep the styling removable so the surround can be repaired or repainted.

8. Use paint to create contrast inside the faux composition

Paint the surround one color and the wall or recessed center another to create depth without additional materials. A dark center with a pale frame can suggest an opening; a saturated surround can make the mantel look built-in. Because this is a faux fireplace, you can choose ordinary interior paint for the room surfaces according to the paint label. The concept does not transfer to the interior of a working firebox.

9. Use patterned wallpaper only on an appropriate accent surface

Wallpaper can supply pattern more quickly than tile, especially above a mantel or on a neighboring accent wall. Lowe’s lists wallpaper among fireplace-upgrade directions. Keep it on a surface where the wallpaper manufacturer permits installation and where heat, sparks, moisture, and access requirements are satisfied. Do not wrap combustible paper into a hot zone simply because the pattern looks good in a photograph.

10. Coordinate tile tones with the room

Rather than matching the fireplace to one isolated object, borrow undertones from nearby textiles, upholstery, rugs, or painted walls. Lowe’s suggests coordinating tile tones with the surrounding room. A warm room may suit cream, terracotta, or tobacco accents; a cooler palette may work with blue-gray or soft stone colors. Order samples or place loose pieces in the room before committing, because grout and daylight can shift the apparent color.

11. Frame a faux surround with sconces

Wall lights can turn a decorative fireplace into a balanced composition. The Home Depot faux-fireplace example includes sconces as part of the arrangement. Center each fixture to the surround’s proportions, plan wire routing before closing any wall, and follow electrical requirements. This idea is most straightforward when the fireplace is purely decorative; a working appliance still requires its own clearance and service-access review.

12. Choose a simple surround update instead of rebuilding

If the existing mantel and surround are sound, a carefully chosen finish may deliver the visual change you want with less disturbance to the assembly. Clean the surfaces, repair visible damage with products intended for that substrate, repaint an exterior surround where permitted, or replace only a removable decorative trim piece. The cited project guidance supports both small finish updates and larger tile or construction categories, but it does not provide comparative prices, completion times, or skill ratings. Let the condition of the installation and the desired look—not an assumed budget or schedule—decide the scale.

Preparation for an exterior-brick paint makeover

For the brick-paint direction, organize the work around surface preparation rather than color selection:

  1. Confirm the boundary. Mark the exterior faces that may be coated and identify the firebox, vents, controls, or service openings that must remain untouched.
  2. Read the appliance documentation. Look for finish, clearance, access, and maintenance restrictions before buying primer or paint.
  3. Protect the room. Use a drop cloth, painter’s tape, gloves, and adequate ventilation for the cleaner and coating selected.
  4. Clean the masonry. The Lowe’s/Purdy guide names a wire brush and TSP cleaner; follow the cleaner label and remove residue before priming.
  5. Inspect and repair. Resolve loose material, crumbling joints, moisture, or smoke deposits before coating. A film of paint will not correct a damaged or damp assembly.
  6. Test the system. Apply primer and paint to a small exterior area according to the product directions, then check adhesion and appearance before continuing.
  7. Coat without entering the firebox. Keep every primer and paint product on the approved exterior surface only.

Clearances, code, and heat: the safety check that comes first

Clearance is not a style detail. It depends on the fireplace construction, the listed appliance, combustible trim, and the code adopted where you live. The 2024 International Building Code, section 2111.12, states: “Any portion of a masonry fireplace located in the interior of a building or within the exterior wall of a building shall have a clearance to combustibles of not less than 2 inches (51 mm) from the front faces and sides of masonry fireplaces and not less than 4 inches (102 mm) from the back faces of masonry fireplaces.” The same section contains additional exceptions and mantel or trim provisions, so those dimensions are not a universal rule for every fireplace.

Before adding wood, wallpaper, tile backer, a deep mantel, artwork, or a television, check three authorities in this order:

  • The appliance manual: Listed units can impose clearances and material restrictions that differ by model.
  • The locally adopted code: Your jurisdiction may use a different edition or amendments to the model code.
  • The product installation instructions: Tile, adhesive, grout, paint, electrical fixtures, and mounting hardware each have their own substrate and heat limits.

For a television over an electric fireplace, Dimplex advises checking both the fireplace manual and the television manufacturer’s restrictions. That advice is specific to the manufacturer’s support guidance; it should not be generalized to every electric fireplace.

Operating versus faux: a practical decision guide

Question If the fireplace operates If the fireplace is faux and decorative
Can the firebox be painted? No assumption is safe; the Lowe’s/Purdy guide specifically says not to prime or paint the interior firebox. There is no operating firebox, but use finishes appropriate for the actual room surfaces.
What controls material choices? Appliance listing, manual, local code, substrate, and product instructions. Wall structure, attachment, room finish requirements, and electrical rules for any lights.
What can the 12 ideas change? Exterior brick, approved mantel finish, or compatible surround and hearth work. Surround, mantel, paint, tile, wallpaper, and sconces as a decorative composition.
What must remain separate? Decorative inspiration cannot replace clearance and installation instructions. A cosmetic example cannot be treated as instructions for adding a real appliance.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Painting the wrong surface: Keep primer and paint out of the interior firebox and follow the specific appliance manual.
  • Assuming tile is automatically heat-safe: Verify the tile system, adhesive, grout, substrate, and clearances for the actual location.
  • Copying a faux-fireplace detail onto a working unit: The Home Depot example is cosmetic; its wood-mantel details are not operating-fireplace instructions.
  • Using one clearance number for every design: Masonry, gas, wood-burning, and electric installations can have different requirements, and local code adoption matters.
  • Covering service access: Keep controls, vents, removable panels, and inspection points reachable as required by the appliance documentation.
  • Choosing color before checking the room: Compare samples with the room’s textiles and lighting, especially when coordinating tile tones.

A sensible order for your makeover

Start by documenting the fireplace type, model, opening dimensions, existing materials, and nearby combustible trim. Decide whether the project is a surface refresh, a surround or hearth change, or a faux construction. Then verify code and manufacturer requirements before selecting finishes. Create a measured elevation, place tile or color samples in the room, and list only products whose installation instructions match the substrate and location. Complete preparation first, protect the room, and keep cosmetic ideas for faux fireplaces clearly separate from work on a functioning appliance.
