To make this dimensional flower-vine wall art, use stained plywood as two rigid canvases, draw and paint a vine, then form each flower by swirling paint-tinted pre-mixed drywall mud directly on the panel. Kristi Linauer documented this approach on March 4, 2013, during a bathroom makeover, using teal or yellow with white so the flowers echoed the room’s colors and stained wood.

What this project is—and what it is not

Linauer’s project is a simple decorative treatment for a blank bathroom wall, not a conventional stretched-canvas painting. The support is plywood cut into two panels and stained before any drawing begins. The raised flowers come from pre-mixed drywall mud (also called drywall joint compound), while paint supplies the color. A craft brush handles both the thin linework and the textured flower shapes.

The method is an individual DIY account rather than a controlled test or a product review. Linauer did not identify a compound or paint brand, panel dimensions, material quantities, paint-to-compound ratio, drying or curing time, or a protective finish. Her post also does not establish how the finished panels perform in bathroom humidity. Those details should not be inferred from the project.

Materials and the role of each one

Material How Linauer used it
Plywood panels Two pieces were cut to serve as the art supports and stained to create the ground.
Pencil Used to draw the vine before painting.
White paint Brushed over the pencil vine, used for leaves, and swirled into the flower compound.
Pre-mixed drywall mud or joint compound Mixed with a little paint and scooped onto the plywood to create dimensional flowers.
Teal or yellow paint Added color to the flowers by swirling it into the compound.
Craft brush Used for the vine and leaves and for scooping, shaping, and swirling the compound.
Chunky white frames Reused to display the finished panels.

The compound is the defining medium: it supplies relief that ordinary brush paint would not. Plywood provides a firm, stained surface, and brush size controls how delicate or heavy the vine appears. These are different jobs, so choosing a supply is a matter of matching the role rather than selecting a “best” brand or method.

How the two-panel design fits a bathroom makeover

The design goal was to fill a blank bathroom wall with uncomplicated art that coordinated with the room. Linauer wanted the artwork to incorporate the bathroom’s colors, including stained wood. Using two panels makes the composition modular: each board can carry part of the vine while the pair reads as one display once framed.

The source mentions a “20-day goal,” but that was Linauer’s personal schedule for completing the bathroom makeover. It is not a standard project duration or a measured statistic. The post does not state how long any individual stage took.

Step-by-step: recreate the technique

1. Prepare the plywood supports

Cut two pieces of plywood to the sizes you want for the wall and stain them. Linauer used stained plywood rather than a stretched canvas, so the wood remains visible around and between the painted and raised elements. The project account does not give panel measurements, stain type, number of coats, or a preparation sequence; those choices are left to the maker and the instructions for the products selected.

2. Sketch the vine in pencil

Draw the vine directly on each panel in pencil. Plan where the stem travels and where leaves and flowers will sit before adding the dimensional medium. A pencil line is easy to see while you establish the layout and can guide the subsequent white-paint linework.

3. Paint the vine and leaves

Trace the pencil vine with white paint using a craft brush, then add the leaves. Keep the brush aligned with the drawn path so the stem remains continuous across the composition. The brush available to Linauer was too large for the thin, wispy vine she envisioned, which made her line thicker than preferred. Brush choice therefore affects the character of the design before any flowers are added.

4. Tint a small amount of pre-mixed mud

For each flower, Linauer mixed a little paint into pre-mixed drywall mud to make the compound workable and to introduce color. She described the premixed compound as “a little on the dry side.” No exact amount of paint, mixing time, consistency target, or container size was reported, so reproduce the idea—compound plus a little paint—without treating an unreported ratio as part of the original method.

5. Scoop the mixture onto the panel

Use the craft brush to scoop the tinted compound onto the plywood where a flower belongs. The flower is built on the panel rather than painted as a flat motif. The source does not specify a thickness, number of scoops, or tool alternative; the visible technique is simply applying the material with the brush.

6. Swirl the brush to shape the flower

With the compound on the board, swirl the brush to form the petal-like texture. Linauer then dipped the brush in teal or yellow paint and swirled that color into the mud, repeating with white paint. The movement both shapes the relief and distributes the color through it.

7. Keep the color passes light

Linauer deliberately avoided excessive swirling because she did not want teal, yellow, and white to blend too much. Make the color passes gently enough to retain visible separation. Overworking the surface changes the painterly effect she was trying to preserve; her account treats restraint, rather than a specific number of turns, as the important control.

8. Repeat the flowers across both panels

Continue the same compound-and-swirl process for each flower, placing the blooms along the painted vine and leaves. The project description does not prescribe a count, spacing pattern, or mirrored arrangement. Let the pencil layout determine where each flower lands, and treat the two boards as a coordinated pair.

9. Display the panels in reused frames

Linauer finished the presentation with chunky white frames she already had. The frames provide a strong border around the stained wood and the raised flowers. Her written method does not describe hanging hardware or a framing modification, so follow the frame and wall-hardware instructions appropriate to the finished weight and your wall.

Brush size is a design decision

The most concrete process lesson in Linauer’s account concerns the line brush. She could find only a brush that was too large for the thin, wispy vine she pictured, so her vine came out thicker than she wanted. The flowers pleased her more than the linework, but she assessed the overall attempt modestly, writing, “I think this artwork attempt goes in my ‘it’ll do’ category.” That is her personal evaluation, not an objective grade of the technique.

If a delicate stem is central to your design, select a brush that can make the intended line before you begin. If a heavier, more graphic vine suits the wall, a larger brush may be appropriate. The source supports the relationship between brush size and line weight; it does not establish particular brush sizes or brands.

Managing the compound and color without overworking it

When the mud feels dry

Linauer found the pre-mixed compound “a little on the dry side” and mixed in a little paint to make it workable. Because she did not report a formula or a measured consistency, treat that observation as a condition of her materials, not a universal rule. Use the product’s own handling directions for any preparation or adjustment, and avoid presenting a personal mixture as a guaranteed recipe.

When colors start to merge

Her solution to unwanted blending was to swirl less. Place the teal or yellow and white with controlled movements, stopping once the surface has the texture and separation you want. Repeated agitation can erase the distinct color traces that give each flower its layered look.

When the vine looks heavier than planned

A line that is thicker than your sketch can change the balance between stem, leaves, and raised flowers. Linauer’s experience shows that the brush itself can be the cause. Adjust the brush before revising the entire layout; the source does not describe sanding, repainting, or another correction method.

Bathroom placement and evidence limits

This artwork was conceived for a bathroom makeover, but the post does not provide moisture testing, humidity limits, a drying or cure schedule, or instructions for sealing the compound. It therefore cannot establish that drywall mud on stained plywood is suitable for a particular bathroom location or that the finish will remain stable under repeated humidity.

Before committing a finished panel to a damp area, check the current instructions and suitability statements for every product you use, and consider making a small test piece under conditions similar to the intended location. That is a prudent decision for your materials, not a performance claim about Linauer’s project. The source offers no data from which to calculate durability or a recommended protective coating.

What the original account leaves unspecified

  • No product brand or exact type beyond pre-mixed drywall mud or joint compound is named.
  • No plywood dimensions, flower count, paint quantities, or paint-to-compound ratio are given.
  • No drying, curing, or waiting time is reported.
  • No sanding, sealing, varnishing, or other protective-finish procedure is described.
  • No hanging hardware, wall fastener, or finished weight is provided.
  • No humidity, water exposure, or long-term durability information is presented.

These omissions matter because they prevent the tutorial from being treated as a measured specification sheet. The reproducible core is the sequence: stained plywood, pencil layout, white-painted vine and leaves, paint-tinted premixed compound, restrained swirling, and framed display.

A practical planning checklist

  • Confirm that two plywood panels fit the wall and the frames you plan to reuse.
  • Choose the stain and paint colors to coordinate with the room, including any visible wood tones.
  • Have a fine-enough craft brush available if you want a wispy vine; brush size changed Linauer’s result.
  • Keep the compound, teal or yellow paint, and white paint available before beginning the flower passes.
  • Sketch the complete vine and leaf placement in pencil so the raised flowers support the composition.
  • Plan to swirl lightly and stop before the colors lose separation.
  • Use the labels and instructions for your own materials for handling, drying, and placement decisions, since the original post supplies none of those specifications.
  • Decide how the framed panels will be supported on the wall before installation.

Who should try this project?

This method suits a maker who wants relief and visible brush texture without building a conventional canvas painting. It is especially appropriate when stained wood needs to remain part of the color scheme and when two framed panels fit the available wall. It is less suitable for anyone seeking a quantified recipe, a guaranteed cure time, or documented performance in a humid environment, because Linauer’s account does not provide those assurances.

The essential takeaway

The distinctive idea is straightforward: make the support from stained plywood, paint a white vine and leaves, then turn pre-mixed drywall mud into raised flowers by tinting it and swirling a brush through the surface. Teal or yellow mixed with white preserves the bathroom’s accent colors when the swirls remain light. Use the right brush for the line weight you want, and treat all drying, sealing, and humidity decisions as product-specific questions rather than established facts from this 2013 project.
