You can make a crisp Greek key lumbar pillow without finding matching trim: mask the design with painter’s tape, mix paint with textile medium, heat-set it, and sew the decorated fabric into a zippered cover. The method below adapts Kristi Linauer’s 14 × 18-inch project while explaining how to resize the layout and avoid paint bleed.
What this project makes
The finished example is a 14 × 18-inch lumbar pillow with a purple Greek key border. Instead of applying purchased trim, you paint the geometric motif directly onto prewashed cotton twill. A reusable corner template keeps the turns consistent, while painter’s tape defines the straight runs. The cover closes with a zipper, which is useful when the back will be visible.

Linauer published the original project on May 15, 2017, at Addicted 2 Decorating. Her named paint and medium are historical choices, not a guarantee of current stock or formulation, so use the textile medium’s present label as the authority for compatibility, drying, heat-setting and care.
Materials and tools
| Item | How it is used | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton twill | Painted front and cover fabric | Choose a closely woven, opaque fabric. Prewash and dry it before cutting. |
| Paint | Color for the Greek key | The original project used Behr paint in New Orleans; treat that as a historical example and confirm that your current paint is compatible with the selected medium. |
| Textile medium | Changes ordinary paint for fabric use | Mix in the ratio printed on the bottle. The original project used Delta Fabric Medium. |
| Painter’s tape | Creates the border and motif gaps | Use one width for the 1.25-inch central opening if that is your chosen scale, plus narrower tape for the Greek key strokes. |
| Brush | Applies the paint | A brush that fits between the tape lines gives better control than a large, heavily loaded brush. |
| Iron | Heat-sets the dry design | Use the temperature, pressing time and protective layer specified by your medium. |
| Sewing machine, thread and zipper foot | Constructs the cover and zipper | A zipper foot helps stitch close to the teeth without hitting them. |
| 16-inch zipper | Closure for the 14 × 18-inch example | The source project centered a 16-inch zipper and closed about 1.5 inches at each end of that seam. |
| Scissors, pins and a pillow form | Cutting, assembly and stuffing | The author generally prefers down/feather inserts, but any correctly sized form can work. |
Choose the decorating and closure method
Tape masking is the most direct route to the continuous Greek key shown here, but it is not the only way to decorate a cushion. Compare the practical trade-offs before cutting fabric.
| Method | Precision and repeatability | Setup and sewing | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tape-masked paint | High control over straight edges when tape is pressed firmly; easy to resize by changing tape widths. | Requires layout time and a sewn cover unless you paint a ready-made cover. | A custom Greek key in a color that is difficult to source as trim. |
| Stencil with textile paint | Repeatable motifs, although registration at corners must be planned. | Stencil preparation is required; can be done on fabric squares before sewing. | Repeating panels or a different geometric interpretation. |
| Purchased trim or ready-made pillow | Fastest if the exact color, scale and quality are available. | Little or no painting; a ready-made cover avoids construction. | A project where matching an existing product matters more than customization. |
For a sewn cover, a zipper keeps the back neat and removable. An envelope back is simpler and is the author’s usual choice, but she selected a zipper because these pillows would show from behind. Neither closure has a durability comparison established by the tutorial.

Use the documented 14 × 18-inch example
For a 14 × 18-inch finished pillow, cut the painted front at 15.25 × 19.25 inches. That larger rectangle accounts for the seam allowances used in the source project. Keep the finished dimensions and the cut dimensions separate on your pattern notes so you do not accidentally paint a piece that is too small.

Resize without distorting the motif
For another pillow size, first decide the finished width and height, then add the seam allowance required by your construction plan. Make the corner template from the same tape widths you will use on the fabric. The source layout uses a border on all four sides, a 1.25-inch square central opening that matches the wider painter’s tape, and narrower tape for the Greek key strokes. If your tape is wider or narrower, redraw the template rather than forcing the original measurements onto it.
Mark the intended border distance from each edge before taping. A paper test on the same-sized rectangle lets you check that the final corner turn meets the side runs cleanly and that the design is centered on a lumbar pillow.
Make a reusable corner template
- On scrap paper or card, draw the corner turn at the exact scale of your border. Include the 1.25-inch square opening only if your wider tape is 1.25 inches.
- Lay the wider tape over the square portion and use narrower tape to define the remaining Greek key strokes. Keep the gaps and turns consistent.
- Trim the paper or card so one corner can register against the fabric edges. Label the edge that faces the pillow’s top and side; this prevents rotating the template incorrectly.
- Test the template on a blank rectangle. Move it around all four corners and confirm that the motif can continue along each side without a sudden change in spacing.
The template is a positioning guide, not a stencil. The paint should still be bounded by tape applied directly to the fabric.

Prepare, tape and paint the fabric
1. Prewash and press
Prewash the cotton twill using the care method you expect to use later, then dry and press it flat. Prewashing removes some manufacturing finish and prevents the finished cover from shrinking unexpectedly. Linauer says she wanted the covers to be washable, but the tutorial does not report a wash test, so do not treat wash durability as measured evidence.

2. Transfer the border
Place the cut front face up on a protected, flat surface. Use a ruler and light pencil marks to establish the border distance. Position the corner template, tape around its edges, then lift and move the template to the remaining corners and along the sides. Keep the tape runs straight and butt joins neatly rather than overlapping them into the painted area.
3. Seal the tape edges
Press every tape edge down firmly with your fingers. Linauer specifically emphasizes pressing the tape all the way around. Paint should be brushed from the tape toward the fabric or parallel to the tape edge; brushing from the fabric toward the tape can force wet paint underneath and soften the geometry.
4. Mix for textile use
Combine the paint and textile medium in the ratio on the current medium label. Do not infer a ratio from a different brand or an older bottle. Stir thoroughly, and test a small taped sample on a fabric scrap. Check the dry color, hand feel and edge sharpness before committing to the pillow front.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Apply light coats
Load the brush lightly and work within the taped channels. Two light coats were used in the documented project. Let the first coat settle rather than scrubbing back and forth over the tape edge, then apply the second coat after the surface is ready according to the medium’s instructions.

6. Dry, remove tape and heat-set
The source author let the paint dry for about one or two hours before removing the tape. Actual drying time depends on humidity, coat thickness and the product label. Peel the tape carefully while the edge is visible, then heat-set the fully dry design with an iron exactly as the medium directs. Use a pressing cloth or other barrier if the label requires one, and avoid dragging the iron across any area that could still transfer paint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sew the zippered cover
- Prepare the back pieces for your selected finished size and closure layout. The source tutorial does not publish separate back-panel measurements, so derive them from your front pattern and the seam allowance your machine work requires.
- Place the 16-inch zipper along the lower seam, center it in the opening, and mark the point where the zipper ends. The original construction leaves approximately 1.5 inches sewn closed at both ends of that seam.
- Stitch the zipper with a zipper foot. Keep the fabric aligned and the seam allowance consistent; the source project uses a 5/8-inch seam allowance for the cover.
- Open the zipper before sewing the remaining sides. This is essential: a closed zipper can trap the cover inside out and prevents you from turning the piece safely.
- Sew the other sides with the same 5/8-inch allowance. Trim excess bulk from the corners without cutting through the stitching.
- Turn the cover right side out, push the corners into shape, and press it. Insert the pillow form through the opened zipper and close it.
Because the painted front is already finished before assembly, keep pins and pressing tools outside the motif whenever possible. If you prefer an envelope back, substitute that closure during cutting; it is simpler, but its overlap and panel dimensions depend on your chosen pattern.
Painting a ready-made cover or using a stencil
You can skip zipper construction by painting a plain cover. Put cardboard or thick paper inside the cover first so wet paint cannot transfer to the back. This barrier is recommended in supplementary cushion-painting instructions from Spotlight Stores and Dharma Trading Co.. Mix acrylic paint with textile medium according to the medium’s directions, and test the complete stack of cover fabric, insert barrier and paint before starting the visible panel.

Plaid Crafts’ March 23, 2024 project decorates fabric squares, lets them dry, sews them with a half-inch seam allowance, turns the cover and hand-stitches the opening. Its listed example uses two 16-inch pillow forms, four 17-inch fabric squares, scissors, a sewing machine, thread and a 1-inch stencil brush. Those pictured patterns are not Greek key, but the workflow demonstrates how decorating separate panels can simplify alignment.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
Paint has bled under the tape
- Use less paint on the brush and make lighter coats.
- Repress the tape immediately before each coat, especially at overlaps and along the fabric grain.
- Change your stroke direction so you brush from tape toward fabric or parallel to the edge, not from fabric into the tape.
- On a future piece, test the exact fabric, tape and paint-medium mixture first; a different weave can wick more readily.
The corners do not meet
- Check that the template was registered to the same two edges at every corner.
- Confirm that you used the same tape width and gap spacing throughout.
- Redraw the layout on paper before retaping the fabric; moving wet tape after painting usually damages the edge.
The fabric feels stiff
Heavy paint deposits and an incorrect medium ratio can change the hand of cotton twill. A test swatch shows this before you sew. Follow the label’s ratio and apply only the coverage needed for opacity.
The design transfers or remains tacky
Allow the full drying time stated by the medium, not merely the one-to-two-hour example from the original project. Heat-set only when the paint is dry, using the label’s temperature and time. If the product gives no laundering guidance, treat the item as decorative and avoid assuming machine-wash performance.
The zipper catches
Check that the zipper tape is centered, the seam allowance is even and the zipper was opened before the side seams were closed. Trim bulky seam allowances at the corners, but never clip into the zipper stitching.
Care and realistic expectations
Follow the selected textile medium’s current care instructions, including washing temperature, detergent, drying method and whether ironing is permitted. The original maker prewashed her twill and intended the covers to be washable; she did not publish laboratory testing or a measured number of wash cycles. Treat the named 2017 materials as examples, verify present product directions, and keep your test swatch as a reference for future cleaning.
Why this approach works
Painting solves the exact problem that prompted the original project: trim in the desired purple was difficult to source. Tape gives you a modular Greek key that can be scaled to the pillow, while textile medium is intended to help ordinary paint function on fabric. Prewashing, a protected work surface, firm tape adhesion, controlled brush direction and two light coats address the practical causes of distortion and bleed. Sewing the zipper only after the design is dry keeps the pattern flat during painting and leaves a removable cover for the insert.
