Make a hand-painted Halloween pillow by painting a textile-safe design onto prewashed fabric, building the image in thin layers, letting it dry completely, heat-setting it according to the paint label, and then sewing the cover around an 18-inch insert. The method works for pumpkins, ghosts, bats, black cats, witches, or any simple seasonal graphic; the key to a clean result is controlling paint, protecting the fabric underneath, and treating heat-setting as a product-specific step.

What you need for an 18-by-18-inch Halloween pillow
The measurements below follow the 18-by-18-inch project documented by Refresh Restyle. Use them when you want a finished pillow that fits an 18-inch insert. If you choose a different insert, enlarge or reduce both fabric pieces and adjust the opening or envelope overlap accordingly.
Fabric and sewing supplies
- Two 18-by-18-inch pieces of cotton, muslin, or another tightly woven fabric suitable for painting.
- Matching sewing thread.
- An 18-inch pillow insert.
- Sewing machine or hand-sewing supplies.
- Scissors, pins or clips, an iron, and a pressing surface.
Painting and transfer supplies
- Fabric paint or fabric ink specifically labeled for textile use.
- Round paintbrushes in sizes suited to your design.
- Optional metallic fabric paint for highlights.
- Masking or painter’s tape.
- A printed Halloween graphic, tracing paper, and either a lightbox or an illuminated glass surface.
- Cardboard, a foam printing mat, or another smooth barrier to place behind the painting area.
- A pressing cloth and household iron.
Choose paint by its labeled fabric compatibility, cleanup instructions, finish, and heat-setting method rather than by color alone. Plaid describes its Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Inks as water-based acrylic ink for brush-on, stamping, and stenciling textile projects. The manufacturer says decorated surfaces are machine-washable when properly heat-set, but that statement applies to the product’s specified process, not to every fabric paint.

Choose the construction before you paint
Painting the front panel before sewing gives you a flat surface and lets you keep the artwork clear of seams. Decide whether the finished piece will be a permanently stuffed pillow or a removable cover, because the back-panel pattern and final sewing steps differ.
| Construction | How it works | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stuffed, sewn pillow | Place front and back right sides together, sew around the edges while leaving a 12-inch opening at the bottom, turn right-side out, insert the pillow form, and close the opening. | A decorative pillow that will stay assembled. | Few pattern decisions, but removing the insert later requires opening the seam. |
| Removable envelope cover | Overlap two back panels behind the painted front so the insert can slide in and out through the envelope opening. | Seasonal storage, easier washing, or changing inserts. | Requires accurate overlap and additional back-panel preparation. |
A related painted-pumpkin project uses an envelope-style cover with sturdy cotton or muslin. Treat that as an alternative construction, not as a requirement for the 18-by-18-inch sewn version.

Prewash when the care label allows
Prewash and dry the fabric according to its care instructions before cutting or painting. This removes manufacturing finishes and reduces later shrinkage. Do not use fabric softener or spray starch when following Plaid’s Fabric Creations application guidance, because either can change how ink bonds to the fibers. Press the dry fabric smooth so wrinkles do not distort the transferred drawing.
Protect the reverse side
Lay the fabric on a clean, firm surface and slide cardboard or a foam printing mat underneath the section you will paint. Fabric paint can migrate through the weave, especially when a brush is overloaded. The barrier prevents the design from appearing on the back and keeps paint off your work surface. Replace or reposition the barrier if it becomes wet with paint.
Make a scrap test
Use a leftover piece of the same fabric to test the paint colors, brush pressure, opacity, drying time, and heat-setting method. Check whether the color changes after drying and whether the fabric remains flexible. A scrap test is also the safest place to try metallic paint or a very dark outline before committing to the pillow front.

Transfer a Halloween design accurately
A simple, high-contrast graphic is easier to paint than a detailed illustration. A pumpkin with a few facial shapes, a crescent moon, a bat silhouette, or a witch’s hat can be reduced to clean areas of color. Refresh Restyle’s pictured motif is a frog dressed as a witch; the useful idea is to adapt any Halloween graphic to your palette and skill level rather than copy that subject.

Keep important details away from the seam allowance.
- Place the printed image beneath the fabric, with the fabric’s painting side facing up.
- Set the layers on a lightbox or illuminated glass surface. If you do not have one, trace the design onto tracing paper and use that as your placement guide.
- Center the image by measuring the visible margins. Tape the fabric and paper in place so neither shifts while you trace.
- Trace only the lines you need. Heavy, dark transfer marks can remain visible through light paint, so use a light touch and simplify small details.
For an original design, sketch directly on paper first and identify the background, main silhouette, highlights, and outlines. Planning those layers prevents you from repeatedly repainting an area that should remain a different color.
Paint in controlled layers
Start with the broadest shapes
Load the brush lightly and spread a thin coat over the largest color areas first. Work from background elements toward foreground details. A thin layer dries more evenly and gives you a chance to correct the shape before it becomes opaque. Do not try to achieve full coverage by flooding the fabric.
Add color gradually
Let each layer become touch-dry before adding the next layer of the same or a contrasting color. Build opacity with several light passes rather than one thick application. This approach is especially useful on pale fabric, where a second coat can even out brush marks without creating a hard ridge.
Keep edges deliberate
Use a smaller round brush for eyes, stems, lettering, and other narrow lines. Wipe excess paint from the brush before it reaches a sharp corner. If two colors meet, finish one shape, allow it to settle, and then paint the adjoining shape; wet colors are more likely to wick into each other.

Use metallic paint sparingly
Metallic fabric paint can add a moon, star, buckle, or pumpkin highlight, but it often changes the visual weight of a design. Test it on scrap fabric first and reserve it for accents rather than large areas unless the label specifically supports that application.
Refresh Restyle warns against over-saturating the fabric because excess paint may bleed. If a puddle forms, lift it gently with a clean, nearly dry brush instead of spreading the wet paint outward.
Dry completely before heat-setting
Allow the painted panel to dry fully. The exact-title tutorial specifies 24 hours before its pressing step. Drying time can vary with paint thickness, humidity, and the fabric, so do not heat-set a surface that still feels cool, tacky, or soft.
Heat-setting instructions are not interchangeable. For the paint used in the Refresh Restyle project, the tutorial says to place a pressing cloth over the design, press with an iron on high heat for about three seconds at a time while moving across the design, and then press the reverse side. Plaid’s Fabric Creations application guide gives a different procedure for its ink: dry for 24 hours, then use a pressing cloth and dry hot heat for 30 seconds over each design area. Follow the current label for your chosen product, including its temperature, duration, steam setting, and whether the reverse side should be pressed.

- Set the iron exactly as the paint instructions require; do not assume the high-heat setting or a three-second pass applies to another formulation.
- Cover the design with the pressing cloth. Never place a hot iron directly on wet or exposed paint.
- Press or move the iron according to the label’s timing and coverage instructions. Avoid dragging if the product directions call for lifting and pressing.
- Heat-set the reverse side only if the product directions specify it.
- Let the fabric cool before handling, folding, or testing the surface.
Sew the permanently stuffed version
This construction follows the 18-by-18-inch tutorial and is the most direct route to a finished decorative pillow.

- Trim both painted and unpainted panels to the same 18-by-18-inch size after the paint has been heat-set and the fabric has cooled.
- Place the panels right sides together, aligning all four edges. Pin or clip around the perimeter.
- Sew the perimeter while leaving a 12-inch opening along the bottom edge for turning and stuffing. Backstitch at both ends of the opening.
- Trim bulky corners without cutting the stitching. Turn the cover right-side out and push the corners out gently with a blunt tool.
- Press the seams from the fabric side with a pressing cloth if the paint or fabric-care label permits ironing.
- Insert the 18-inch pillow form through the bottom opening. Ease the corners into place rather than forcing the insert, which can stretch the seams.
- Close the opening with a neat ladder stitch by hand or a carefully aligned machine seam.
Keep the painted motif centered during cutting and sewing. If an outline reaches the seam allowance, part of it may disappear into the seam or become distorted when the cover is turned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sew a removable envelope cover
An envelope cover is useful when the pillow is displayed only in autumn or when you want to wash the cover separately. Draft the painted front at the finished insert size, then cut two back panels wide enough to overlap across the opening. The overlap must be large enough to keep the insert from showing during normal use.
- Finish the inner edge of each back panel with a narrow double fold or another durable hem.
- Place the painted front right side up. Lay one back panel right side down with its hemmed edge toward the center, then place the second back panel over the opposite side so the two panels overlap.
- Pin or clip the layers and sew around the full perimeter.
- Trim the corners, turn the cover right-side out, and press the edges carefully with a pressing cloth if allowed.
- Insert the pillow form through the envelope opening and adjust the overlap so no opening gap is visible from the front.
Because the exact dimensions of the back panels depend on the insert and the overlap you want, do not reuse the 12-inch stuffing opening from the permanently sewn version for an envelope cover.

Care for the finished pillow
- Use the paint manufacturer’s care instructions as the authority for washing, drying, ironing, and chemical cleaning.
- Do not wash until the paint has dried and been heat-set exactly as directed.
- If the cover is removable, take out the insert before laundering.
- Test the first wash on a discreet or scrap-painted area when the product instructions allow washing.
- Keep the pillow away from prolonged dampness and direct heat that is not part of the labeled setting process.
Plaid’s statement that decorated surfaces are machine-washable is qualified by proper heat-setting. It should not be read as a guarantee for a different paint, an unwashed fabric, or a process performed at the wrong temperature.
Troubleshoot common painting and sewing problems
Paint bleeds outside the outline
Blot excess paint instead of scrubbing, let the area dry, and sharpen the edge with a smaller brush and a controlled layer. On the next section, use less paint and make sure the backing barrier is flat against the fabric.

The color looks patchy
Patchiness usually comes from trying to cover the fabric in one heavy coat or painting over a partly dry layer. Let the surface dry, then add a thin, even coat. A scrap test will show how many coats your chosen color needs.
The design transfers or feels tacky
The paint may not be fully dry, or the fabric may have received too much product. Stop handling it, allow additional drying time, and check the label before heat-setting. Do not iron a tacky surface directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The paint remains after washing
Check whether the product is intended for fabric and whether every design area received the specified heat-setting treatment. If the label requires a different temperature or duration than the method you used, follow the label for future pieces; do not assume a second, unapproved heating cycle will restore the finish.
The corners look lumpy after turning
Trim the seam allowance at the corners before turning, but leave the stitching intact. Push the corners out gradually and distribute the insert evenly instead of overfilling it.
A practical order of operations
For the most reliable result, complete the project in this order:
- Choose the insert and construction style.
- Select a textile-safe paint or ink and read its current label.
- Prewash and dry the fabric if its care instructions allow, without softener or starch.
- Cut the fabric, press it smooth, and protect the underside with cardboard or a foam mat.
- Test colors and brush behavior on scrap fabric.
- Transfer and center a simplified Halloween graphic.
- Paint thin, controlled layers and avoid saturating the weave.
- Allow the design to dry completely.
- Heat-set it using the selected product’s exact instructions.
- Sew the permanent pillow or envelope cover, then insert the pillow form.
This sequence keeps irreversible steps—heat-setting and final construction—until after the artwork has dried and passed a visual check.
