The right DIY pedestal frame starts with the object it must support—not with a universal cut list. A laundry appliance, a painted artwork, a table top and a plant pot need different footprints, heights, joinery and bracing. Measure the object, choose a plan intended for that use, then build and finish the frame around those dimensions.

This guide separates the main pedestal approaches so you can select a workable design, gather the correct materials and avoid treating one project’s measurements as a guarantee for another.
Decide what the pedestal will support
“Pedestal frame” can describe several unrelated constructions. Before buying lumber, answer four questions:

- What object will sit on it: artwork, a display item, a tabletop, a plant or a washer/dryer?
- What are the object’s exact width, depth and height, including trim, hoses, overhangs or a frame?
- Do you need an open frame, solid panels, shelves or a drawer?
- Will people touch, lean on or move the assembly, or is it a stationary display?
These answers determine the footprint and the way forces travel through the frame. The plans described below are not interchangeable. A display pedestal’s narrow proportions are unsuitable for a full-size appliance, while an appliance platform may look oversized beneath a painting.
Measure first and set a usable target
Record the supported object’s footprint
Measure width and depth at the largest points. For an appliance, include doors, control panels and any required clearance. For a framed painting or sculpture, measure the base that will actually contact the pedestal, not just the artwork’s image area. Record the measurements in one unit and draw a simple top view.
Choose finished height
Decide where the center of the object should appear in the room and how much visual weight the base should carry. A 37-inch-high display pedestal is a very different proportion from an 8 3/4-inch laundry riser. Keep the intended finished height separate from the lengths of legs, panels and top pieces; those component dimensions change with material thickness and joinery.
Allow for construction and movement
Leave room for the thickness of the top, bottom and side pieces when converting a target size into cuts. Dry-fit the frame before fastening it. For machines, confirm that doors open and that hoses, vents and electrical connections are not pinched. For a display piece, check that the object’s center of gravity remains over the base when someone brushes past it.

Compare the main pedestal-frame approaches
| Approach | Typical use | Published dimensions or scope | Construction characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appliance pedestal | Washer or dryer riser | Kreg’s example is 28 inches wide, 29 inches deep and 8 3/4 inches tall overall; measure your own machines and modify the plan. | 2×8 side and back pieces, top and bottom supports, pocket-hole screws; adaptable footprint. |
| Laundry pedestal with storage | Washer/dryer platform with drawer or shelves | Overall dimensions are not stated in the material summary; use the selected plan’s cut list. | Framed platform, legs, top, drawer parts and shelves; requires drawer slides and more sheet goods. |
| Panel-and-frame display pedestal | Artwork or object display | 37 inches high by 13.5 inches wide by 13.5 inches deep, according to the WoodworkersWorkshop listing. | Panel-and-frame construction; oak is shown, but the listing permits a different wood choice. |
| Mitered display stand | Decorative stand or gallery-style support | Finished dimensions are not stated in the Woodworkers Journal description. | Blanks made from four 45-degree triangles for several components, glued into sections; a strap clamp with corner brackets helps close joints. |
| Pedestal table base | Square farmhouse-style table | Dimensions depend on the tabletop and the Ana White plan selected. | Dimensional lumber, screws, brad nails and wood glue; sized as a table base rather than a display column. |
| Plant stand | Raised planter | Dimensions depend on the Purdue Extension plan selected. | Use the plant-stand plan’s own cut list and proportions. |
No source establishes a transferable load rating for a generic pedestal frame. Do not infer one by comparing these projects, and do not use an unverified design for a safety-critical or exceptionally heavy load.
Tools and materials by construction route
Pocket-hole appliance frame
The Kreg appliance example uses pocket-hole screws to join a frame made from 2×8 stock, with top and bottom supports. You need accurate measuring and cutting tools, a drill/driver, a pocket-hole jig, the specified screws and a way to check the assembly for square. The jig is conditional: it is useful for this joinery method, not a requirement for every pedestal design.
Storage pedestal
The separate Kreg laundry-storage plan lists these project-specific materials:
- 8-foot 2×4 boards and 1×3 boards
- 3/4-inch plywood
- Thinner plywood or MDF
- Pocket-hole screws, brad nails and wood glue
- A pair of 22-inch ball-bearing drawer slides
Those materials belong to that larger storage design. Do not substitute the list for a bill of materials for a simple open platform.

Decorative display frame
The panel-and-frame plan is listed in oak, but the listing allows a different wood species. Select straight, stable stock and make sure all panels come from the same thickness. The mitered stand instead depends on accurately cut 45-degree sections, glue and a strap clamp with corner brackets.
How to build an appliance pedestal frame
This sequence follows the adaptable washer/dryer concept. The cited example was built for machines measuring 28 inches wide and 29 inches deep, producing a pedestal 28 by 29 inches and 8 3/4 inches tall. Treat those numbers as that project’s starting point, not as a fit guarantee.
- Measure both machines. If the washer and dryer differ, design for the larger footprint or build separate platforms. Note door swing, hoses, vents and the path needed to slide each machine into place.
- Set the finished footprint and height. Add only the clearances your installation requires. Account for the thickness of the top and bottom pieces before calculating cut lengths.
- Prepare the frame pieces. The Kreg design uses side and back components cut from 2×8 stock, plus top and bottom supports. Follow the selected plan’s cut list rather than copying a dimension from a different pedestal.
- Lay out pocket holes. Position holes where the screws will pull each joint tight without breaking through the finished face. Make a test joint in scrap of the same thickness.
- Assemble on a flat surface. Fasten one side to the back and supports, check the corner for square, then add the other side. Measure both diagonals; equal diagonals indicate a square rectangle.
- Install the top. Center it to the frame, verify that the appliance footprint is fully supported and fasten it as specified by the plan. Avoid trapping removable access panels or service points.
- Level and test before loading. Place the empty pedestal where it will live, check for rocking and correct the base. Set the appliance in position with help, reconnect services and confirm that doors and hoses operate normally.
Adding drawers or shelves
Storage changes the frame’s internal dimensions and its sequence of assembly. In the storage plan, shelves and drawer parts are designed into the platform rather than added afterward. Install the 22-inch ball-bearing slides only after the opening is square and the drawer dimensions have been checked against the actual slide requirements. A drawer that binds usually indicates an out-of-square opening, mismatched slide spacing or a drawer box that is too wide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the center of the stored weight low and distribute it across the frame. Do not fill a drawer with dense materials until the completed pedestal has been checked for rocking and the machines or display object are stable.

Building a panel-and-frame display pedestal
The WoodworkersWorkshop listing describes a finished pedestal 37 inches high and 13.5 inches wide and deep. It identifies oak but permits a different wood choice. This is a narrow display column, not an appliance platform.
- Confirm the display footprint. Make sure the artwork or object sits inside the 13.5-inch square top, or revise the plan proportionally before cutting.
- Choose and acclimate stock. Use boards and panels of consistent thickness. Let the wood reach the room’s moisture conditions so joints are less likely to move after assembly.
- Build the frame and panels. Cut each component from the plan, label its orientation and dry-fit the four sides before applying glue. Keep the visible faces aligned.
- Check diagonals and plumb. A tall, narrow pedestal shows small errors. Correct the frame while the glue is workable, then allow the assembly to cure on a flat surface.
- Finish for the intended artwork. Sand progressively, remove dust and apply a compatible sealer or paint system. Test the finish on an offcut so color and sheen do not distract from the piece being displayed.
Building a mitered decorative stand
The Woodworkers Journal project is a separate design. It creates blanks from four 45-degree triangles for several components and glues the sections together. Because the dimensions are not stated in the description, use the complete plan for every cut rather than borrowing the 37-inch display pedestal measurements.
- Mill or select blanks with square edges.
- Cut the 45-degree triangles accurately and keep matching pieces together.
- Dry-assemble each section to verify that the miters close without gaps.
- Apply glue evenly, bring the miters together and use a strap clamp with corner brackets to close the joints.
- After curing, flatten or flush the joints, then sand and finish the stand.
Miters expose end grain on every corner, so rushed cuts or uneven clamping can leave visible openings. Make a short test assembly before committing the final stock.
Table bases and plant stands
A square farmhouse pedestal table is a different category from a display column. Ana White’s plan provides its own shopping and cut lists, including dimensional lumber, screws, brad nails and wood glue. Size the base from the tabletop dimensions and the amount of legroom required; do not reuse the appliance or display dimensions.

Purdue Extension’s woodworking plans include a plant stand. A planter introduces moisture, soil and an uneven center of gravity, so use the plant-stand plan’s dimensions and provide a finish appropriate for occasional water exposure. Keep a drainage tray from trapping water against unfinished wood.
Finishing a frame for a painting or gallery display
Prepare the surface
Break sharp edges, fill only the defects that will show through the finish and sand without rounding reference edges that must meet. Remove dust before priming or painting.
Choose a stable finish
For a painted pedestal, seal porous end grain and use a primer compatible with the topcoat. A low-sheen color generally keeps attention on the artwork, while a darker or glossier finish makes surface defects more visible. Allow each coat to cure before placing the artwork.
Protect contact points
Use thin, non-marring pads where the object meets the top. They help prevent sliding and isolate the artwork from small finish imperfections. Recheck that the pads do not make the object tilt.
Quick Recap
Stability checks and failure prevention
- Rocking: Check the floor and the frame’s diagonals. Correct the source of the movement instead of forcing one corner down with excessive fasteners.
- Racking: If the frame twists side to side, inspect for missing back, side or bottom supports. A decorative open frame may need a designed panel or brace; add one only if it does not conflict with the plan.
- Splitting: Drill appropriate pilot holes and keep screws away from board ends. Test fasteners in scrap of the same material.
- Misaligned drawers: Square the opening, verify slide spacing and check that both slides are installed at the same height.
- Surface damage: Sand glue squeeze-out before finishing. Glue left on a face can repel stain or paint.
- Unknown capacity: Stop if the intended load is unusually heavy, dynamic or safety-critical. These project plans do not provide an engineering rating for a generic frame.
A practical selection checklist
- Write down the supported object’s maximum width, depth and height.
- Choose appliance, storage, display, mitered, table or plant-stand construction based on that use.
- Use the selected plan’s dimensions and cut list only; do not merge measurements from different designs.
- Decide whether pocket holes, glued miters or another specified joint matches your tools and skill.
- Dry-fit, square and level the empty frame before loading it.
- Finish and protect contact surfaces only after the structure is stable.
