ShutterKits’ made-to-measure plantation shutter kits can suit an Australian homeowner who is comfortable taking precise measurements, checking the supplied instructions and installing with a drill. The range includes internal aluminium, PVC and timber shutters, plus external aluminium and decorative categories. The right material, frame and opening configuration depend on the window, exposure and design brief, so treat the supplier’s quote and fit confirmation as part of the project—not as an optional final check.
What a ShutterKits DIY plantation shutter kit includes
ShutterKits describes its shutters as made to measure: panels are produced from the opening measurements supplied when you order. Packages can be labelled by room, which is useful when several windows are being fitted at once. The standard contents described by the supplier are:

- Shutter panels made for the ordered opening
- A frame kit where the selected product requires one
- Hinges and hardware for each panel
- Installation instructions and care instructions, sent before delivery
Do not assume every order contains the same frame, fasteners or configuration. Confirm what is included for your exact material, mount, panel layout and opening shape before you pay or begin work.
Which products and materials are available?
The supplier’s range is organised around both material and location. Its home page lists internal aluminium, PVC, painted-timber and stained-timber shutters, as well as external aluminium shutters and decorative shutters. Colour, frame and other customisation choices vary by product.

| Choice shown by ShutterKits | Where it is presented | What to confirm before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Internal and external categories | Whether the selected profile, frame and finish suit your exposure and opening |
| PVC | Internal category | Exact window application, available colours, louvre and frame options |
| Painted timber | Internal category | Finish, care requirements and suitability for the room and reveal |
| Stained timber | Internal category | Stain choice, moisture conditions and the required mounting arrangement |
| Decorative shutters | Decorative category | Whether the item is functional, fixed or purely architectural for your intended use |
The available information does not establish a universal winner for durability, insulation, price or maintenance. Those outcomes depend on the product specification and installation environment. Ask ShutterKits to confirm a proposed combination rather than treating a material label as a guarantee for every window.
Is DIY installation realistic for your project?
The supplier frames DIY installation as suitable for people who can measure accurately, operate a battery drill and follow written instructions. A straightforward standard window is a reasonable first project if the opening is accessible and square enough for the chosen frame. A multi-panel bay, bifold or sliding arrangement demands more planning, handling space and adjustment than a single rectangular window.
In its July 27, 2026 delivery article, ShutterKits estimates 20 to 30 minutes for a standard window after the required items have been identified and are ready to install. That is a vendor estimate, not an independently tested duration or a promise for every opening. Allow additional time for unpacking, checking parts, correcting an unsuitable measurement, preparing the reveal and making final adjustments.
- Choose professional help if you cannot safely support the panels, drill into the required substrate or judge whether an opening is out of square.
- Pause and seek confirmation if the window is unusually deep, angled, arched, bay-shaped, bifold or sliding.
- Plan for a second person when panels are wide, tall or heavy, even if the final fixing procedure is simple.
How to measure the opening
Measurement is the decision that determines whether a made-to-measure panel can be installed. ShutterKits’ delivery guidance asks for width, height and reveal depth, and recommends a tape measure or laser measurer. Follow the supplier’s current measuring guide as the controlling instruction for your order.

1. Record the opening and reveal
- Identify the exact opening to be covered and whether the shutter will mount inside the reveal or outside it.
- Record the opening width, opening height and reveal depth. Note sill projections, handles, locks, architraves, flyscreens, security screens and any trim that could interfere with a frame or louvre.
- Write down the room or window reference so the measurement can be matched to the correct package label later.
2. Take three width and three height measurements
Measure width near the top, at the middle and near the bottom. Measure height at the left, in the centre and at the right. Openings can taper or be out of square, so do not rely on one measurement taken at the most convenient point. Compare the three readings and record them, rather than discarding the differences.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Use the smallest tight measurement where the opening varies
ShutterKits says to use the smallest tight width and the smallest tight height when a dimension varies. This reduces the risk of ordering a panel or frame that is too large for the narrowest point. Do not simply order to the widest reading and hope the frame can absorb the difference.
4. Report out-of-square and irregular conditions
Tell the supplier when the opening is out of square, tapered, twisted or otherwise irregular. ShutterKits notes that a suitable fitting frame may address some cases, but a frame is not a universal solution for every distortion or obstruction. Send photographs or a sketch if requested, and wait for product-specific confirmation before finalising the order.
Choose the frame, mount and panel configuration
The frame affects how the shutter sits in the opening, how much reveal remains visible and how hinges and clearances are arranged. Your quote should identify the frame type and whether a frame kit is required for the selected product.

| Decision | Information to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inside or outside mount | Reveal depth, trim, sill and nearby obstructions | Determines available clearance and the frame’s position |
| Panel layout | Number of panels, opening direction and any divider rails | Controls hinge locations, swing clearance and access through the window |
| Fixed, hinged, bifold or sliding arrangement | Window dimensions and the way the opening is used | Changes hardware, space requirements and installation complexity |
| Louvre size | Preferred appearance and required clearances | Affects the visual proportion and must be checked against handles, reveals and frame depth |
| Colour or timber finish | Chosen colour, paint or stain option | Ensures the quoted finish matches the material and product category |
Specialty shapes and unusual layouts should be treated as a confirmation exercise. The published material does not establish that every arched, angled, bay, bifold or sliding opening is available in every material or frame. Supply the complete dimensions and photos, then ask which configuration ShutterKits can manufacture and support.

The installation guidance names a drill with screwdriver bits and a measuring tape as basic tools. A laser measurer is an alternative for taking dimensions, provided you understand how to hold it square to the surfaces being measured. The supplier also says suitable screws and gap filler may be needed; do not assume those items are included unless they are listed in your order.
- Drill or battery drill with screwdriver bits appropriate to the supplied hardware
- Tape measure or laser measurer
- Pencil, level and a means of supporting or protecting the sill while working
- Suitable screws and wall plugs for the actual substrate, if the supplied instructions call for them
- Gap filler for small finishing gaps where the instructions permit it
- Clean cloths and a protected area for laying out labelled panels and frames
Before drilling, remove packaging carefully, keep each room’s components together and compare the hardware with the parts list. Check the reveal for loose paint, dust, protruding screws and anything that will prevent the frame from sitting flat. Never enlarge a hole or substitute a fastener until you have checked the installation instructions for your product.

1. Verify the order
Match every panel and frame to the room and opening reference. Check that the measured size, handedness, panel count, louvre choice, colour and frame agree with the order. Photograph any damage before assembly and contact the supplier if a component is missing or does not correspond to the instructions.

2. Dry-fit the frame
Position the frame in the intended mount without fully tightening it. Check that the reveal depth, sill, handles and trim leave the required clearance. Some products have pre-drilled frames and aligned hinge components; use those features as described in the supplied instructions rather than drilling new locations by assumption.
3. Fix and check the frame
Use the specified screw type and fixing points for the substrate. Keep the frame supported while you start each fixing, then check level, plumb and diagonal alignment before final tightening. If the frame twists as it is tightened, stop and correct the support or ask the supplier for guidance; forcing a panel into a distorted frame can create binding.
4. Hang the panels
Attach or engage the hinges in the order shown in the instructions. Support each panel while securing hinge hardware, and keep fingers clear of closing gaps. Open and close the panels gently to identify rubbing before applying force.
5. Adjust clearances and finish
Make only the hinge or frame adjustments permitted by the instructions. Confirm that louvres rotate without striking the sill, handle or adjacent panel. Where a small finishing gap is expected, use an appropriate gap filler only after the operation and alignment are correct.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
| Problem | Likely consequence | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring only once | A panel or frame may be too large at another point | Take three width and three height readings and use the smallest tight dimensions as the supplier directs |
| Ignoring reveal depth | Frame, louvre or handle clearance may be inadequate | Record depth and all protrusions before selecting the mount |
| Hiding an out-of-square opening | Binding, uneven gaps or an unworkable installation | Report the condition and request a suitable frame or alternative configuration |
| Ordering by a generic window size | Made-to-measure panels do not match the actual opening | Use measurements for each opening and label them by room |
| Assuming every screw is supplied | Work stops when the substrate needs different fixings | Check the parts list and obtain suitable screws or plugs before installation |
| Starting with an unverified specialty shape | Manufacture or installation may not be supported | Send dimensions and photos for confirmation before ordering |
Delivery, quotes and support in Australia
ShutterKits states that it delivers Australia-wide. That statement does not establish international availability, a delivery fee or a lead time for your postcode. Confirm delivery coverage and charges when requesting a quote, particularly for remote areas or large multi-panel orders.
The supplier’s contact page provides a quote and contact form that accepts a postcode and optional opening measurements. It also lists phone and email contact options and an appointment-only showroom in Sumner Park, Queensland. Include the number of openings, material preference, inside or outside mount, unusual shapes, reveal depths and clear photographs so the response can address fit rather than provide only a generic price.
No current price schedule, like-for-like professional-installation comparison or complete warranty terms are established in the published material described here. Obtain those details in writing for the exact product, finish, frame and delivery postcode. Ask what happens if a supplied measurement is disputed, a component is damaged in transit or the opening changes before installation.
How to decide whether the kit suits your project
- Choose a DIY kit with confidence when the opening is accessible, measurements are repeatable, the frame and configuration are confirmed, and you can safely drill and handle the panels.
- Request additional technical guidance when the reveal is shallow, the opening is out of square, or handles, trim and screens compete for clearance.
- Plan professional installation when the layout is large or complex, the substrate is uncertain, or lifting and alignment cannot be done safely.
- Delay ordering if you cannot provide reliable three-point measurements or if the supplier has not confirmed a specialty shape, external exposure or unusual configuration.
A careful measurement record, an explicit frame choice and a product-specific confirmation are more important than choosing a material by appearance alone. Once those points are settled, the supplied labelled panels, hardware and instructions make a standard opening a manageable DIY installation for a prepared homeowner.
