You can give a sound secondhand ceramic table lamp a rustic concrete or stone appearance with layered texture spray paint, while spending far less than the designer lamps that inspired the look. The documented method uses a coarse texture coat first, a lighter fine-texture coat second, and an optional painted shade. It is a finish makeover—not an electrical repair—so inspect the lamp and keep every coating away from the socket, plug, cord and switch.

What this makeover actually changes
The project changes the lamp’s visible finish, not its construction. A glazed or brightly colored ceramic base becomes visually similar to cast concrete, travertine or another porous stone because two textures overlap: a heavier, grainier layer establishes the body, and a lighter texture breaks up the uniformity. The source project began with a thrifted ceramic lamp and a chosen lampshade; it does not establish that the same products will adhere equally well to wood, metal, plastic, glass, plaster or every ceramic glaze.
Lauren’s February 23, 2022 Bless’er House tutorial describes the result as “A thrifted lamp gets a concrete rustic table lamp designer dupe look for $30 in 10 minutes using just spray paint.” That sentence is the author’s description of one project. Treat the cost and time as a useful planning reference, not a current price survey or an independently timed test.

Check the lamp before you buy paint
Choose a lamp that is structurally sound and worth refinishing. A new surface cannot make unsafe wiring safe.
- Plug the lamp in only long enough to confirm that the switch works and the bulb illuminates normally; then unplug it before handling, cleaning or masking.
- Reject the project as a simple makeover if the cord jacket is split, the plug is cracked, the socket is loose or scorched, the switch behaves erratically, or the base is unstable. Those conditions require repair or replacement by someone qualified, not decorative painting.
- Check that the ceramic has no cracks that could spread when the lamp is moved. Hairline glaze marks are not automatically structural damage, so inspect the body and neck carefully.
- Confirm that the harp, finial and shade fitting are complete. Measure the existing shade’s top diameter, bottom diameter, height and fitter opening before buying a replacement.
Bunnings Australia’s general lamp-painting advice is to make sure the lamp is not plugged in, avoid paint on electrical parts, use appropriate safety equipment and let the coating dry thoroughly before use. This is practical DIY guidance, not evidence that a painted lamp has been electrically tested or certified.

| Secondhand ceramic table lamp | Rigid base for the stone-look finish | The tutorial documents ceramic only; other substrates may need a different primer or coating system. |
| White flat spray paint | Opaque base color beneath the texture | The author reported using a white flat product; check the current can label for surface preparation, recoat window and ventilation requirements. |
| Coarse stone-texture spray paint in Travertine Tan | First texture layer and main grain | This is the color and product named in the 2022 article, not a guarantee of present availability or current formulation. |
| Fine stone-texture spray paint in Pebble | Light, irregular secondary texture | Apply sparingly after the coarse layer has dried, following the current label. |
| Painter’s tape | Masking for socket, hardware and boundaries | Use clean, low-residue tape and remove it before the coating fully hardens. |
| Aluminum foil | Flexible cover for the cord and areas difficult to wrap with tape | Keep foil from touching energized contacts; the lamp must remain unplugged throughout. |
| Optional clear coat | Additional protective layer if compatible with the texture paint | Only use a clear finish whose label says it is suitable over the texture product; an incompatible solvent can soften or wrinkle the surface. |
| Chosen or replacement lampshade | Completes the proportion and color scheme | Replacement shades must match the lamp’s fitter and dimensions. |
The named products in the tutorial were white flat spray paint by Rust-Oleum, Krylon Coarse Stone Texture Paint in Travertine Tan and Krylon Fine Stone Texture Paint in Pebble. They are reported examples from 2022, not a recommendation that you use those exact cans. Formulations, colors, stock and instructions can change, so read the current label before spraying.

Prepare the base without trapping dirt or moisture
- Remove the shade and bulb. Set the shade aside. Remove the bulb only after the lamp is unplugged and cool.
- Clean the ceramic. Dust and grease interfere with adhesion. Wash the body with a mild cleaner appropriate for its finish, rinse away residue and let it dry completely. The tutorial specifically begins by vacuuming the shade to remove dust.
- Scuff only when the finish calls for it. A Behr vintage-lamp repainting example recommends light sanding and masking, but that example is not a product-specific guarantee for every glaze. If your paint label permits sanding, use a fine abrasive lightly enough to dull gloss without cutting into the ceramic; remove all sanding dust afterward.
- Mask electrical hardware. Cover the socket, switch, threaded rod, harp saddle and any exposed metal you do not want coated. Wrap the cord in foil or tape it along its length, leaving no loose flap that could catch overspray.
- Set up ventilation and protection. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area protected from wind, rain and overspray. Wear the protective equipment specified on the can, keep ignition sources away and place the lamp on a stable drop cloth or turntable.
- Test the spray pattern. Spray onto cardboard first. Confirm the nozzle produces an even fan, the texture is not spitting, and the color is acceptable before approaching the lamp.
Apply the rustic stone texture step by step
1. Establish an even base
Apply the flat white base only if your chosen texture system calls for one or if the original color would show through. Hold the can at the label’s stated distance and use several controlled passes rather than one heavy blast. Rotate the lamp so the neck, shoulders and underside of the base receive similar coverage. Stop before the paint forms runs. Allow the base to dry for the time printed on the current label; do not rely on the 2022 tutorial for today’s recoat window.
2. Build the coarse layer
Shake the coarse texture can for the full time specified by its manufacturer. Apply moderate, overlapping coats, moving past the edge of the lamp before releasing the nozzle. The Bless’er House process uses two moderate coats of coarse texture. Let the first coat settle, then apply the second only within the label’s recoat window. The goal is a continuous grain, not a thick crust that hides the lamp’s shape.
3. Add the fine texture sparingly
Once the coarse layer has dried, shake the fine texture product and add a light, sporadic coat. Vary your angle and distance so the fine particles do not form a second uniform color. Concentrate on visually flat areas and leave some coarse grain visible. If one section looks too smooth, correct it with a few short passes after the surface has dried enough for another coat; do not flood the area trying to fix it in one pass.

4. Inspect before unmasking
Walk around the lamp at eye level and from above. Look for bare patches, runs, clogged texture, tape ridges and paint on the hardware. Correct only defects that the product label permits you to recoat. Remove tape and foil carefully while the coating is still within the label’s recommended removal stage, pulling tape back on itself rather than lifting the fresh finish.
Repaint or replace the lampshade
The shade is optional. Keeping a clean white, linen or natural-fiber shade can make the textured base the focal point. A darker shade creates a more dramatic contrast, while a warm neutral reinforces the stone illusion.
If you repaint the shade, vacuum it first, then mask the fitter and any trim that must remain uncoated. Use a coating intended for the shade’s material and apply thin, even passes. A rigid fabric or paper shade may stiffen, show lap marks or alter light transmission after painting; test an inconspicuous area or a spare shade before committing. Never paint the inside near the bulb if the product label does not permit that use, and maintain the bulb wattage and clearance specified by the lamp and shade manufacturers.

Dry, reassemble and test safely
- Leave the lamp unplugged while every painted component dries. “Dry to touch” is not necessarily the same as fully cured.
- Follow the longest drying or curing time printed on any product you used, especially before tightening hardware against the new texture.
- Reinstall the harp, finial, bulb and shade without scraping the finish. Make sure the shade sits level and does not touch the bulb.
- Inspect the cord path so it is not pinched beneath the base or pulled against a sharp edge.
- Only after the coating is thoroughly dry, plug the lamp into a properly functioning outlet and check the switch. Painting does not provide electrical certification.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Texture slides or beads up | Grease, wax, moisture or an incompatible existing coating | Stop spraying, allow the area to dry, clean and lightly abrade only if the label allows it, then test adhesion on a hidden spot. |
| Runs and heavy ridges | Can held too close, movement paused or coat applied too heavily | Do not wipe wet texture. Let it dry, sand or smooth only as the product permits, remove dust and resume with lighter passes. |
| Patchy color | Uneven coverage or viewing the lamp under different light | Rotate the lamp while spraying and use the same lighting to assess each side; add a light, label-approved coat rather than a thick one. |
| Fine texture disappears | Coarse coat was still wet or the fine layer was applied too heavily | Wait for the coarse layer’s required dry time, then mist the fine product in separated passes so the underlying grain remains visible. |
| Tape pulls paint away | Coating had cured tightly to the tape or the base was poorly bonded | Score the tape edge gently, remove it slowly, and repair the lifted area only after the surrounding finish is stable. |
| Shade looks lumpy or blocks too much light | Paint applied too thickly or coating unsuitable for the shade material | Replace the shade or strip and repaint only with a compatible product; do not exceed the lamp’s bulb and clearance requirements. |
| Surface remains tacky | High humidity, insufficient ventilation, incompatible layers or excessive film thickness | Move the unplugged lamp to a clean, ventilated, temperature-appropriate area and follow the can’s cure guidance. If tackiness persists, the coating system may need removal and replacement. |
DIY makeover versus buying a ready-made lamp
A ready-made stone-look lamp saves preparation and curing time, while a thrifted makeover lets you control the silhouette, shade and exact color. Compare the complete project rather than the paint alone.

| Decision factor | Thrifted DIY route | Ready-made alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front spend | Depends on the secondhand lamp, paint, masking supplies and any shade; the tutorial’s 2022 author estimate was about $30. | Current prices vary by retailer and model; no current market price is established here. |
| Time | The author estimated about 10 minutes of active work, excluding drying; setup, cleaning, masking and curing still occupy calendar time. | Usually requires only selection, delivery or pickup and setup. |
| Shape and size | You choose the base and can match a specific tabletop, but you must verify stability and shade fit. | Dimensions are set by the model; confirm height, base diameter, shade proportions and bulb compatibility before purchase. |
| Finish | Coarse-then-fine layering creates an individual texture; coverage depends on preparation and spraying technique. | Finish is already applied, but texture, color and sheen are limited to available designs. |
| Risk and responsibility | You control masking and drying, but the tutorial does not document electrical testing or certification. | Review the seller’s electrical specifications, return policy and safety markings. |
For a one-of-a-kind base, an unusual shade proportion or a lamp you already own, the makeover is usually the more flexible choice. If you need a lamp immediately, require a specific dimension or do not have a safe place to spray and cure, a ready-made model may be more practical. Current designer-dupe prices and models should be checked at the time you shop; the tutorial’s comparison of $300–$400 refers to designer versions described by its 2022 author, not a current survey.
How to budget the project honestly
List the lamp, paint, masking materials, drop cloth, replacement shade and any compatible clear coat separately. You may already own tape or foil, while a shade can cost more than the paint. The $30 figure reported by Bless’er House in 2022 is a tutorial estimate for that author’s project, and the $300–$400 figure is her comparison for designer versions. Neither number should be treated as a current retail quote, recurring price or verified savings percentage.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
Before buying, check how much coverage each can provides, whether the label requires a primer, and whether a clear coat is permitted over the texture. Buying a second can to avoid a color mismatch is often less wasteful than stretching one can into a thin, blotchy finish.
Care for the finished lamp
- Dust with a soft brush or dry microfiber cloth so particles do not collect in the texture valleys.
- For a spill, use a barely damp cloth and dry promptly; avoid soaking textured coatings or using solvents unless the product manufacturer specifically permits them.
- Lift the lamp by its base rather than the shade, harp or cord.
- Recheck the cord, plug, socket and switch periodically. Decorative paint does not change the electrical service life of those parts.
- If the coating chips, identify the exact products used before touching up; an incompatible aerosol can soften the original layer or create a visible edge.
Bottom line
Layered stone-texture spray paint is a fast way to reinterpret a sound ceramic thrift-store lamp as a rustic concrete-style accent. Follow the documented sequence—clean and mask, apply the white base if needed, build two moderate coarse-texture coats, add a light sporadic fine-texture coat, then let everything cure fully. Use the named 2022 products only as examples, verify current labels, and treat the project’s cost and timing as historical estimates. The makeover changes appearance only; safe wiring, correct shade fit and thorough drying remain your responsibility.
