Build this project as a coordinated system: measure the opening and wall, choose the glass-and-fretwork layout, select track hardware for the finished door weight, then cut the frames. The featured project is a pair of sliding French-style barn doors with circular fretwork over glazing. Its dimensions and construction choices are an example, not a universal plan, so your opening, trim, wall framing and hardware instructions must control the final measurements.

What this French barn-door design actually combines

The completed project from Addicted 2 Decorating uses two doors that roll sideways on barn-door-style hardware. Each door is visually closer to a French door than a conventional solid barn door because a glazed opening is dressed with a decorative circular fretwork grille. The author also links separate instructions for making the fretwork, rolling hardware and trim, so treat the pages as related project notes rather than one engineered kit plan.

The later account says bookcases were built around the doors, making them function more like pocket doors because the leaves disappear beside the opening. That is a site-specific result: you need clear, usable wall space for the doors to travel unless your room has a purpose-built recess.

The fretwork is a decorative layer, not a replacement for glass. The companion tutorial, DIY Fretwork Panels For French Doors, describes cutting a grille from 1/4-inch MDF with a jigsaw and placing it over glass. Your frame must retain the glazing securely while also holding the grille flat and preventing it from rattling.

Measure the opening and the travel zone before cutting

Start with a site sketch, not a door cut list. Record the finished opening, every obstruction and the direction in which the pair will slide. The Home Depot guide’s central warning is that “The choice of room for a DIY barn door must have plenty of space to accommodate the door and its track.” Its sample guidance requires wall space at least as wide as the door on the opening side, while Lowe’s installation guide says to account for casing and places a sample door about 1 inch above the finished floor. Those are starting points from specific guides; the selected hardware’s clearances take precedence.

Measure or inspect Why it affects the build
Finished opening width and height Determines how much the pair must cover and how the two leaves meet.
Casing, baseboards and adjacent trim Sets the wall offset, door thickness and whether a hanger board or spacers are needed.
Finished-floor height and floor level Controls the bottom clearance and floor-guide position.
Stud locations above and beside the opening Determines where the track or a structural hanger board can be fastened.
Clear wall length on both sides Confirms that each leaf can slide far enough to expose the opening without hitting furniture, switches or bookcases.
Electrical, plumbing and HVAC obstructions Prevents drilling into hidden services and identifies places where the door cannot sit flat against the wall.

For a pair, do not copy a single-door width formula unchanged. Decide how much the leaves overlap the opening, how much they overlap each other at the center, and whether the edges need extra coverage for privacy. Draw both leaves at full travel on the wall plan before ordering glass or cutting rails.

Choose the glass, fretwork and door layout together

Decide what the glazing must do

Clear glass maximizes borrowed light but gives the least privacy. Obscured, textured or film-treated glass changes the appearance and the amount of light without changing the basic frame concept. Select the glazing before fixing the inner frame dimensions; a glass supplier’s thickness and edge-clearance requirements must fit the groove, stops or retaining beads you intend to use.

Design the fretwork as a removable decorative grille

Use the circular pattern shown in the project or draw a new pattern that leaves enough material around the perimeter to stay rigid. The cited method cuts the pattern from MDF with a jigsaw. Make a full-size paper or cardboard template first, check its relationship to the glass and muntin-like frame members, then transfer it to the sheet. Plan how the grille will be retained—mechanical stops, a shallow rabbet, clips or another reversible method—so the panel can be repaired or repainted without removing the glazing.

Coordinate handles and the center meeting line

Mark pulls on the elevation before drilling. On a pair, handles that are too close to the center seam can collide; handles too near the outer edges can hit the wall or trim when the doors are parked. Leave room for fingers without placing hardware over a fragile fretwork spoke.

Specify the rolling hardware before finalizing door dimensions

Barn-door systems vary in load rating, track length, roller geometry, mounting offset and included safety parts. The Home Depot guide describes a rail with wheels on door-mounted brackets, recommends a track twice the door width for a full slide and states that the hardware in that guide supports up to 200 pounds. That capacity applies only to that guide’s hardware, not to every kit or to your wall.

Hardware question What to verify in the current manufacturer instructions
Finished weight Add the frame, glass, MDF grille, finish and hardware; keep the total below the kit’s rated limit with an appropriate safety margin.
Track length Confirm the length needed for the pair and its center overlap. A single-door rule cannot be transferred automatically to a two-leaf layout.
Roller and door compatibility Check the permitted door thickness, bracket spacing, top-edge requirements and wheel/track profile.
Wall offset Ensure the supplied spacers clear casing, baseboards, fretwork projections and pull handles.
Mounting method Determine whether the rail can land directly on studs or needs a hanger board to bridge their spacing.
Stops and anti-jump parts Confirm end stops, anti-jump devices and adjustment hardware are included and compatible with the rollers.
Floor guidance Choose the guide type that captures the door without scratching the floor or interfering with the bottom rail.
Soft-close equipment Soft-close units, if desired, may be optional and can impose extra weight or clearance requirements.

Do not treat a retailer’s sample dimensions as structural approval. The guides from This Old House, Home Depot and Lowe’s show common methods, but they do not assess the capacity of your particular wall, fasteners or door assembly.

Materials and tools for a controlled build

  • Framing stock sized for the selected glass, fretwork and hardware brackets.
  • Glazing, glazing stops or another retention system specified for the glass thickness.
  • MDF sheet for the fretwork pattern, plus a jigsaw and blades suited to the material.
  • Track, rollers, brackets, end stops, anti-jump parts and floor guide from one compatible system.
  • Stud finder, tape measure, long level, drill/driver, bits, clamps, square and socket wrench.
  • Finish materials appropriate for the frame and MDF, with masking supplies to protect the glass.
  • Structural screws and washers specified by the hardware maker for the actual wall construction.

Dry-fit the frame, glass and grille before applying finish. A painted edge, retaining bead or bracket can change the fit enough to prevent the door from closing or the roller from sitting correctly.

Build sequence: frame, fretwork, finish and glazing

  1. Make a full-size elevation. Draw both leaves, the center overlap, glass openings, fretwork margins, rail brackets and pulls. Dimension every part from the opening and the chosen hardware, not from an attractive stock size.
  2. Cut and assemble the frame. Use the joinery appropriate to your stock and tools. A Kreg sliding-barn-door plan documents one pocket-hole approach that can inform an alternative frame method; it does not establish how the featured French doors were made. Keep the frame square and provide a flat, continuous surface for the roller brackets.
  3. Cut the grille template and MDF panel. Transfer the approved pattern, drill starter holes where needed, and cut slowly with the jigsaw so the narrow spokes do not tear out. Sand edges without shrinking the perimeter below the retention detail.
  4. Test the panel over the glass. Place the glazing in the frame using the planned spacers or stops, then position the grille. Check that no MDF edge bears directly on a sharp glass corner and that the pattern remains centered when the door is viewed from both sides.
  5. Finish before final assembly. Prime and coat the frame and MDF according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions. Keep paint out of roller-bearing surfaces, screw holes, glazing channels and the floor-guide path. Mask the glass or remove it during finishing rather than relying on cleanup after the paint cures.
  6. Install the glazing and retain the grille. Fit the glass without forcing it, install the specified stops or beads, and secure the fretwork so it cannot shift during rolling. Leave any designed movement allowance required by the glazing system.
  7. Weigh the completed leaf. Include glass, grille, finish, brackets and pulls. Compare the result with the selected kit’s current load rating before lifting the door.

Mount the track to framing, then hang the pair

Prepare the wall

Locate and mark studs across the full rail length. If the track holes do not align with enough framing, install a hanger board sized and fastened as the hardware instructions require; Lowe’s specifically notes that some tracks need one to bridge studs or clear trim. A level board is essential because a small slope can make both leaves drift toward one end.

Install the rail and safety hardware

The This Old House procedure demonstrates the usual order: locate studs, level a mounting board, attach the track, fit end stops, and position a floor guide. Adapt the screw type, spacing, board dimensions and clearances to the actual kit and wall. Do not rely on drywall anchors for a load that the manufacturer expects to be carried by framing.

Hang with a helper

Attach the roller brackets to the door tops, install anti-jump devices, and have a helper lift each assembled leaf onto the rail. Set the end stops before allowing a door to roll freely. Adjust the floor guide so the bottom remains captured while the door clears the finished floor and baseboards.

Run a complete travel test

  • Open both leaves fully and verify that the opening is genuinely usable.
  • Close the pair and check the center overlap, privacy line and gasket or stop contact.
  • Roll each leaf into both end stops without the pull, frame or fretwork touching adjacent objects.
  • Look along the top and bottom edges for rubbing, racking or a door that lifts out of the guide.
  • Retighten fasteners after the test and repeat the travel check.

Common failure points and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause Correction
The door cannot expose the whole opening Insufficient wall length or an oversized center overlap Recheck the travel drawing; relocate obstructions or revise the leaf widths before rebuilding track support.
Leaves scrape casing or baseboard Incorrect wall offset or missing spacers Use the kit’s specified standoff, then confirm pulls and fretwork remain clear.
Doors drift or roll back Rail or hanger board is out of level Re-level the support and verify every structural fastener is seated in framing.
Door bounces off the rail Anti-jump parts or stops are absent, loose or incompatible Install and adjust the supplied safety components; do not substitute unverified parts.
Bottom edge swings Floor guide is misaligned, too loose or blocked by flooring Center the guide on the door path and confirm its fasteners suit the floor.
Fretwork rattles Grille is not retained evenly or has excess clearance Add the planned retaining detail or resilient contact points without loading the glass.
Glass appears stressed Frame is racked, stops are overtightened or MDF is pressing on an edge Remove pressure, square the frame and reset the glazing using the glass system’s instructions.

What to verify before calling the project complete

  • The pair covers the opening with the intended center overlap and privacy level.
  • Every finished leaf, including glass and grille, is within the selected hardware’s load limit.
  • The rail and any hanger board are fastened to framing as specified, with no unsupported structural load.
  • Track length, wall offset, stops, anti-jump devices and floor guide match the same hardware system.
  • Glass is retained independently of the decorative MDF grille.
  • Both doors roll smoothly from stop to stop and remain captured at the top and bottom.
  • Paint is cured and clear of moving parts, glazing channels and fastener threads.
  • A helper was used for lifting, and the final inspection included trim, floor, furniture and adjacent bookcases.

The original project is an individual DIY account published roughly twelve years before the current review and recently crawled, so its appearance and component choices may be dated. The fretwork article is dated September 15, 2014 and shows a 2025 update in its byline. Use those pages for the design idea and sequence, then confirm present-day material availability, tool safety and hardware requirements with the manufacturers whose products you actually install.
