You can make convincing snow-covered pine cones and branches in about three practical ways: brush on clear-drying glue and add salt, Epsom salt, artificial snow or glitter; or create a lighter, splattered coating with white paint and a toothbrush. The best choice depends on whether the greenery is fresh, whether the display will get wet, how much three-dimensional texture you want and what you plan to do with the materials afterward.

Choose the right snow effect before you start

All three techniques use ordinary craft supplies, but they do not behave the same way. Use the table as a quick decision guide, then follow the detailed instructions for the finish you want.

Method Best visual result Rain exposure Fresh green branches Texture and cleanup
Clear glue plus salt or Epsom salt Bright, crystalline, dimensional frost Best for sheltered displays; salt can dissolve or run when wet Regular salt may discolor fresh foliage; Epsom salt is the safer choice described by the tutorial Large flakes give pronounced texture; brush off loose grains after drying
Clear glue plus artificial snow or white glitter Fluffy or sparkling snow with strong dimension The source recommends this option for outdoor displays exposed to rain, although the exact adhesive and product still matter Suitable where you want to avoid regular salt on green leaves Plastic-based particles are not biodegradable and can be very fine
White paint and a toothbrush Natural-looking patches, dots and windblown splatter The source presents it for indoor or outdoor use; durability depends on the paint and weather Works without salt touching the foliage Thin, controllable coating with little loose material to sweep up

Gather materials and prepare the work area

Start with dry pine cones, cut branches or a mixture of both. Shake out dirt, insects and loose scales outdoors, then let damp greenery surface-dry before applying anything. A clean, dry surface gives glue and paint a better chance to hold.

  • Clear-drying craft glue, such as Elmer’s, or Mod Podge matte
  • Epsom salt, regular table salt or coarse kosher salt; Morton coarse kosher salt is one example of a larger flake
  • Artificial snow flurry or white glitter for the second method
  • White paint and an old toothbrush for the splatter method
  • Small brush for spreading adhesive, paper or a tray for catching excess, disposable gloves and newspaper or a drop cloth

Use a tray with raised edges when possible. It lets you rotate a cone over the collected flakes instead of wasting material on the floor. Keep separate containers for unused and used flakes so damp glue does not contaminate the clean supply.

The tutorial’s author, Ananda of A Piece Of Rainbow, emphasizes speed: “The key to success here is to work quickly so you can apply the ‘snow’ before the glue starts to dry.” Have every material open and within reach before brushing on adhesive.

Method 1: Glue and salt for crystalline frost

When this method makes sense

Choose salt for pine cones, dried branches and other elements that will stay indoors or under cover. The grains catch on the glue ridges and create a sharp, icy surface. On fresh green foliage, use Epsom salt rather than regular salt if you want this look; the source warns that regular salt can discolor green leaves after a few days.

Step-by-step

  1. Place the dry pine cone or branch on your lined work surface. Hold one end so you can turn the piece without touching freshly coated areas.
  2. Brush a thin layer of clear-drying craft glue or Mod Podge onto the edges and upper surfaces where snow would naturally collect. You do not need to cover every recess.
  3. Immediately sprinkle salt over the wet adhesive while slowly rotating the piece. For larger, more visible flakes, choose coarse kosher salt; fine salt gives a softer dusting.
  4. Tap the piece lightly over the tray to release material that never contacted glue. Save clean excess if it has not touched wet adhesive.
  5. Set the piece aside to dry without moving it. The tutorial estimates roughly 10 minutes, but humidity, glue thickness and the material’s porosity can change that time.
  6. When the surface feels firm, gently brush away loose grains with a dry, soft brush. Avoid rubbing across glued ridges, which can pull off the new frost.

How to use Epsom salt

Epsom salt is the source’s recommended substitute for regular salt on fresh branches. Its crystals can look more like chunky ice than powdery snow, so apply it selectively to leaf tips and branch joints. Test a hidden section first: the tutorial gives a practical recommendation, not a controlled comparison of salt types or foliage species.

What to expect

This technique gives the most obvious three-dimensional sparkle when the adhesive is concentrated along edges. It is also easy to refresh: add a little glue to a bare ridge and repeat the sprinkling step. Because salt is water-soluble, do not treat the finished piece as rainproof.

Method 2: Glue with artificial snow or white glitter

Why choose manufactured flakes

Artificial snow flurry and white glitter create a fluffier or brighter coating than kitchen salt. The source specifically suggests this approach for outdoor displays exposed to rain because those flakes will not wash away in the same way salt can. That is a recommendation from the tutorial, not a guarantee for every flake, glue or climate; inspect the finished piece after severe weather.

Application steps

  1. Spread glue over the same high points you would snow naturally: cone scales, branch forks and upward-facing leaf clusters.
  2. While the adhesive is still wet, sprinkle artificial snow or white glitter generously. Rotate the piece so the coating reaches several sides.
  3. For a packed, snowy look, add a second light layer after the first sprinkle has settled. Keep the adhesive thin enough that the details of the cone remain visible.
  4. Leave the piece undisturbed until the glue has set. Do not blow on the flakes; very small particles can become airborne.
  5. Shake off only the material that is clearly loose. A soft brush can remove stray particles from the underside without disturbing the bonded surface.

Rain, storage and reuse

The tutorial describes artificial flakes as reusable over multiple years and more suitable than salt for wet outdoor displays. Store them dry between seasons in a sealed box so moisture does not soften the adhesive. “Weather resistant” should be treated as display guidance rather than a product certification: prolonged rain, snow, freezing and strong wind can still loosen decorations.

Many artificial snow and glitter products contain plastic. The author notes that plastic materials are not biodegradable, so collect fallen particles rather than rinsing them into soil or storm drains. Choose a contained, sheltered location if shedding would be a problem.

Can spray adhesive be used?

A reader asked whether spray adhesive could be applied to pine cones before adding salt, and the tutorial’s author answered yes. That exchange confirms it as a possible variation, not a comparative test. Follow the spray product’s ventilation, overspray and flammability directions, and verify that it is compatible with the surface before coating an entire arrangement.

Method 3: White paint and a toothbrush

The look this creates

Paint is the most controllable option when you want patches of snow rather than a heavily encrusted surface. Dabbing leaves and cone scales leaves some natural color visible. Flicking the bristles adds irregular specks that resemble windblown snow.

Step-by-step

  1. Put a small amount of white paint in a shallow dish. Dip only the tips of a clean, old toothbrush into the paint.
  2. Tap the loaded brush against a finger or the edge of the dish over the pine cone or foliage. Build snow in patches on upward-facing areas.
  3. For splatter, hold the brush a short distance from the piece and press the bristles back with your thumb, then release them. Vary the angle and distance so the dots are not uniform.
  4. Turn the branch or cone and repeat until the coverage looks balanced. Keep the underside lighter for a natural effect.
  5. Allow the paint to dry completely before stacking or placing the pieces in a container. Add a second layer only where the first looks too thin.

Paint safety and durability

The tutorial calls this method non-toxic and suitable indoors or outdoors, but it does not identify a paint formulation, exposure study or product-specific documentation. Use a paint labeled for your intended surface and follow its own drying and ventilation instructions. Keep painted pieces away from food-contact surfaces and supervise children during application.

Paint does not create the same raised crystals as salt or artificial snow. If you want both a painted shadow and a 3D highlight, let the paint dry, brush glue onto selected ridges and add a small amount of salt or artificial snow. The author specifically recommends combining paint with salt when you want extra dimension.

Match the technique to your display

Indoor table centerpieces and wreaths

All three methods work indoors. Salt or artificial flakes provide the strongest tactile detail for a centerpiece, while paint keeps the arrangement cleaner where loose grains would be inconvenient. Use a tray beneath any piece that may shed.

Fresh-cut branches

Fresh greenery is the main case where regular salt needs caution. The source says it can discolor green foliage after several days. Select Epsom salt, artificial snow, or paint instead, and test one sprig before treating a whole garland. Keep the branches hydrated according to the plant’s normal care needs; decorative coating does not replace water.

Outdoor arrangements

For a covered porch, artificial snow or glitter is the tutorial’s preferred choice when rain is expected. Paint is another option presented for outdoor use. Salt is better reserved for protected areas because moisture can dissolve it and carry it away. Secure lightweight branches so wind does not abrade the finish.

Biodegradability and disposal

The author describes the salt and paint methods as biodegradable, but that description should not automatically be extended to every glue or paint formulation. Artificial flakes and glitter can contain plastic and are not biodegradable. Sweep up loose particles, place them in household waste where local rules require, and do not wash them outdoors.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The flakes slide off: The glue may have begun drying before application, or the surface may have been dusty or damp. Work in smaller sections, clean the material first and press flakes gently into wet adhesive.
  • The finish looks like a solid white blob: Remove some loose material after drying, then repaint or reglue only the highest ridges. Natural snow coverage is uneven; leaving dark recesses creates contrast.
  • Fresh foliage turns dull or brown: Stop using regular salt on that greenery. Trim the affected section if necessary and switch to Epsom salt, artificial flakes or paint on a test sprig.
  • Paint splatter is too large: Use less paint, blot the toothbrush first and hold it farther away. Practice on newspaper until the droplets are small.
  • Artificial snow sheds: The coating may be too thick, the adhesive may not suit the surface, or the piece may be exposed to heavy weather. Let it cure longer, remove loose particles and apply a thinner second adhesive layer in a sheltered location.
  • The cone cracks or loses scales: Handle it by the base and avoid soaking it. Dry, natural cones can be fragile when squeezed or brushed aggressively.

Ways to make the result look intentional

Snow direction

Apply more material to upward-facing ridges and branch forks, then taper coverage toward the underside. A perfectly even coating looks artificial; varied thickness suggests accumulation.

Layered depth

Start with a sparse paint dab to establish the shadow, add glue and coarse salt or artificial snow to a few foreground ridges, and leave some natural wood visible. This combination gives depth without hiding the shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale and flake size

Fine salt or glitter suits small cones and tabletop details. Coarse kosher salt and larger artificial flakes read better on long branches, wreaths and arrangements viewed from several feet away.

Batch consistency

Make one test piece first and photograph it in the intended display location. Match the remaining pieces to that sample rather than trying to make every flake pattern identical. Consistent coverage level matters more than identical individual specks.

Safety checklist

  • Work over newspaper or a tray and clean up loose particles promptly.
  • Very fine glitter and artificial-snow particles may pose breathing hazards, according to the tutorial’s caution. Avoid creating airborne clouds, do not blow excess from the work surface and consider eye protection.
  • Do not leave children unattended with small particles, glue, paint or finished pieces that can shed.
  • Use spray adhesive only with the ventilation and ignition precautions on its label.
  • Keep all craft materials away from food, pets that may chew decorations and open flames.
  • Allow glue and paint to cure before placing pieces in a closed container or near textiles.

How long the project takes

The hands-on portion is short: brushing adhesive or paint onto a few cones and branches, then sprinkling or splattering the finish. The tutorial gives an approximate 10-minute drying time for the salt technique, but treat that as an author’s estimate rather than a guaranteed cure time. Thick glue, high humidity, cold temperatures and dense foliage can extend drying. Artificial flakes and paint should likewise be judged by the surface feel and the product label before handling.

Final decision

For the most crystalline, dimensional frost on dry cones, use clear-drying glue with salt; switch to Epsom salt for fresh greenery. For a rain-exposed display, the tutorial favors glue with artificial snow or white glitter, while cautioning that plastic particles are not biodegradable. For the cleanest, most controllable indoor-or-outdoor pattern, dab and splatter white paint with a toothbrush. When in doubt, make one test piece, let it dry fully and expose that sample to the conditions your finished arrangement will face.
