Old bedposts, chair spindles, stair parts and other turned furniture pieces can become a coordinated set of candlesticks with only a saw, drill and scrap wood. The critical detail is the candle interface: for a holder intended for a live taper candle, install a correctly sized metal insert rather than placing the flame directly in a wooden hole. The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) calls that insert essential because an unlined wooden candlestick presents a serious fire risk.

What you are making

A spindle candlestick is a turned-wood shaft mounted on a broad enough foot to resist tipping, with a candle cup at the top. Repurposed furniture parts already provide the turned profile, so the project is primarily about proportioning, cutting, drilling, joining and finishing. A mismatched group can look intentional: vary the spindle shapes while repeating one paint color, or use related finishes over different woods.

The assembly route is suitable when you have sound salvage and ordinary shop tools. A lathe route is better when you want to create the entire silhouette from a blank or need several identical pieces. In either case, a live-candle holder needs a metal insert selected before you drill the candle opening.

Choose the right build route

Route Best for What you do Main design control

Lathe turning Readers with a lathe, turning tools and suitable blanks Turn a base and spindle, part or separate them as the design requires, then bore for the insert Profile, diameter, height and repeatability

The reclaimed approach consumes less equipment but may produce irregular heights and grain directions. Turning gives you a matched set and lets you build in a wide foot, yet it requires safe lathe practice and accurately bored components. Neither route makes wood itself fireproof; the candle, insert, stability and operating conditions still matter.

Plan proportions before cutting

Measure the salvage

Lay each spindle on a bench and mark cracks, loose joints, nail holes, deep dents and sections weakened by old fasteners. Tap the piece and flex it gently by hand; reject anything that moves at a glued joint or has a split running through the future candle area. Measure the sound length, then reserve extra material for squaring the cut. A damaged lower tenon can often be removed, but a split at the top is a reason to choose another piece.

Give the base enough footprint

A tall, narrow spindle needs a broad, flat foot. If the furniture part has no usable foot, cut a square from straight scrap board and keep its faces flat. The base should sit without rocking on the intended table; a beautiful profile is not useful if a light touch tips it. You can soften the base edges with a small chamfer or round-over after the joint is secure.

Choose the candle system first

Buy or otherwise select the metal taper-candle insert before boring the top. Measure the insert’s outside diameter and depth according to its instructions, then choose a bit that matches those dimensions. AAW’s 2018 “Turn to Learn: Candlestick” plan uses a 7/8-inch or 1-inch bit for its chosen insert. Those are examples from that plan, not universal sizes. The insert must fit the candle you intend to burn and sit firmly without splitting the wood.

These figures show the scale of two published turning projects, not mandatory dimensions for a reclaimed bedpost. Let the actual spindle diameter, finished height and base footprint determine your version.

Tools and materials

  • Sound turned furniture parts and a straight scrap board for any new base
  • Saw suited to the stock, such as a handsaw, jigsaw or miter saw
  • Drill, appropriate drill bits and a smaller bit for pilot holes
  • Clamps or a drilling jig to keep the work steady and the bit square
  • Fastener sized for the actual thickness and species of your parts
  • Metal taper-candle insert selected before drilling
  • Sandpaper, wood glue if appropriate to the joint, and the finish you want
  • Ruler, square, pencil, center punch and eye protection

A Centsational Style table-leg project describes a 7/8-inch boring bit and notes that clamping helps the bit run straighter and makes drilling safer. Treat that bit size as project-specific; your insert determines your bore.

Step-by-step: assemble candlesticks from reclaimed spindles

1. Clean and inspect the parts

Remove dirt, loose paint and protruding nails or screws. Do not aggressively sand a painted part until you have considered whether the coating could contain lead; use appropriate local testing and safety procedures for old finishes. Mark the best-looking face and identify the centerline at both ends. If the spindle has a factory tenon, decide whether it can be retained or must be cut away for a flat joint.

2. Set the finished height and trim the spindle

Mark the cut with a square so the end is perpendicular to the spindle’s axis. Support the turned piece close to the cut and saw slowly to avoid tearing thin beads or coves. Dry-place the trimmed spindle on the proposed base and check the silhouette from several angles. Make all members of a set intentionally equal, or embrace varied heights by establishing a tallest, middle and shortest piece rather than cutting at random.

3. Make and prepare the base

Cut a square or round base from straight, stable stock. If using a square, mark its diagonals to locate the center. Flatten both faces and break sharp edges. Set the spindle on the base and trace its footprint; the joint should land fully on wood, not over an edge or knot. For a narrow spindle, enlarge the base rather than relying on a heavy finish to add stability.

4. Drill aligned pilot holes

Clamp the base to the bench or place it in a drill-press vise. Mark the center of the spindle’s lower end and the matching point on the base. Drill a pilot hole straight into each piece, choosing a diameter appropriate to the fastener and the wood species. A hand drill can work if you use a square as a visual guide and clamp the work; a drill press improves repeatability. Do not assume the fastener used in one bedpost tutorial fits every spindle.

5. Join the spindle and base

Dry-assemble first. Confirm that the spindle stands vertically and the base does not rock. Apply glue only if the joint design and materials call for it, then drive the screw through the base into the spindle (or use the reverse orientation when that better suits the stock). Stop when the parts are tight; overdriving can split a thin turned section. Wipe away squeeze-out and allow the adhesive to cure according to its label.

6. Bore for the metal insert

Mark the center of the top with a compass, center finder or crossed diagonals. Clamp the assembled candlestick or hold it securely in a drill-press setup. Bore to the insert maker’s specified diameter and depth, checking often rather than plunging blindly through the top. If using a hand drill, keep the bit aligned with the spindle axis; a crooked cup will make the candle lean. Test the insert without force. It should seat fully, remain stable and leave enough metal above the wood to support the candle as designed.

7. Sand and finish after the fit is proven

Remove the insert for sanding. Work through sensible grits, preserving the turned details instead of flattening beads and coves. Round or chamfer the base edges, remove dust and apply paint, stain, oil or clear finish suited to the wood. Keep finish out of the insert bore; a thick coating can change the fit. Reinstall the insert only after the finish has cured.

Lathe-built alternatives

With a lathe, you can turn a one-piece candlestick or make a separate base and spindle like the AAW two-piece design. Start with blanks that leave room for defects and chucking. True the stock, establish reference diameters and use calipers to repeat measurements across a set. Turn the foot wide enough for the finished height, then shape the stem with gradual transitions rather than abrupt shoulders that can snap at a thin point.

For a two-piece design, turn mating faces flat and mark their orientation before removing either part from the lathe. Drill the candle opening while the spindle is held accurately, using the insert’s dimensions. A lathe makes centering easier, but it does not remove the need for a metal insert or a stability check on the assembled holder.

Live-candle safety and lower-risk alternatives

The AAW guidance is unambiguous. Walt Wager’s February 2018 “Turn to Learn: Candlestick” says, “You must use a metal insert, because without one a wooden candlestick would pose a serious risk of fire.” Its separate “Candle Holder: Two Piece Candle Holder” plan states, “Never make a candlestick without a metal insert.” Follow that as a design requirement for a holder intended for a live taper. An insert is not a guarantee of safe operation, and no evidence here establishes a regulator-tested fire rating for homemade holders.

  • Use a candle that fits the insert; do not wedge an oversized taper into the cup.
  • Set the holder on a level, nonflammable surface and confirm it cannot wobble.
  • Keep curtains, paper, fabric, dried flowers, greenery and other decorations well away from the flame.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and extinguish it before moving the holder.
  • Inspect the wood, joint and insert each time; retire the piece if it loosens, cracks or chars.

A Canadian Woodworking project describes using foil-cup tea lights because the author considered them less likely to ignite the wood, and mentions a glass tea-light cup as another option. Those are that project’s choices, not a tested standard. For seasonal displays with greenery, a flameless candle avoids an open flame altogether and is the more conservative choice.

Finishing a mismatched collection

Use color to unify different profiles

Spray or brush paint can make unrelated bedposts look like a set. Prime porous or previously painted pieces as needed, then apply thin coats so the turned details remain visible. For a natural collection, use one clear finish and let differences in grain and wear provide the variation.

Balance height and placement

Group three pieces with enough height difference for each flame or flameless light to remain visible. Place the widest base where a person is most likely to brush past the arrangement. Before adding decor, test each holder on the actual table and view it from standing and seated positions.

Troubleshooting

The candlestick rocks

Check the base for twist, sawdust or a proud screw head. Flatten the underside, add thin nonflammable leveling pads, or remake the base wider. Do not compensate for a dangerously unstable holder by adding loose stones or flammable fabric.

The spindle split while drilling

Stop and remove the insert. A split at the candle opening compromises the holder. If the damage is superficial, shorten the top and re-center only when enough sound wood remains; otherwise use the part for a non-candle ornament.

The insert is loose

Do not rely on finish, paper or a random adhesive to make a loose metal cup safe. Measure the bore and insert, remake the top or choose a correctly sized insert, then test the fit before lighting anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The candle leans

Check that the bore is square to the spindle and that the insert is seated evenly. Correct the bore only with the work secured and enough material remaining; a visibly leaning candle is a reason to use the piece as decoration until repaired.

The screw will not tighten

Disassemble and inspect for a stripped pilot hole, a hidden void or a screw that is too long. Select a fastener suited to the real thickness and species, and never drive into a cracked section simply to save the part.

Final inspection before display

  • The base sits flat and the assembled spindle is upright.
  • The joint is tight, with no movement when gently twisted by hand.
  • The insert matches the candle and is fully seated without splitting the wood.
  • Finish is cured and clear of the insert opening.
  • The display area has no nearby flammable decoration.

Once those checks pass, your repurposed spindle has become a functional decorative object rather than just a painted furniture part. If any check fails, use a flameless light or return to the joint and correct the problem before introducing a flame.
