The best DIY step stool is the one whose height, footprint, storage method, and joinery match the job. A compact one-step stool suits a bathroom or occasional shelf reach; a two-step model helps a child participate at a counter; a folding or hanging design saves space; and a mortise-and-tenon project turns the stool into a woodworking lesson. The twelve designs below cover those directions, with plan-specific tools and materials kept separate so you can choose a build without mixing incompatible cut lists.
Compare the 12 designs before cutting wood
| Design | Best use | Form and steps | Storage | Joinery and skill emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight-leg one-step | General household reach | Compact, single top | Stores like a small bench | Screws or pocket holes; beginner-friendly sequence |
| Splayed-leg one-step | Utility with a different stance | Single top, angled legs | Non-folding | Accurate angled cuts and layout |
| Kitchen cabinet reach stool | Upper shelves and cupboards | Small top with braced legs | Compact floor footprint | Braces, screws, and careful squaring |
| Two-tier child’s stool | Children reaching a sink or counter | Top and lower steps | Usually fixed | Moderate project; multiple rails and steps |
| Bathroom sink stool | Hand-washing and grooming | Height sized to the basin | Keep near the vanity | Adapt a fixed design to the actual room |
| Vanity stool | Seated or occasional dressing-table use | Furniture-like compact seat/top | Slides under or beside vanity | More attention to proportions and finish |
| Folding step stool | Homes where storage is limited | Hinged, collapsible frame | Folds flat | Hinge geometry and positive locking |
| Convertible shop stool/step ladder | Workshop tasks at changing heights | Double A-frame with flip-out steps | Nested sections reduce bulk | Half-laps and dados; advanced layout |
| Shaker hanging stool | Utility with wall storage | One step, elongated back, arched stretcher | Hangs from a hole in the back | Furniture shaping and plugged screws |
| Braced kitchen stool | Extra support in a small footprint | Compact top with three braces | Fixed | Brace placement and rigid assembly |
| Joinery-practice walnut stool | Learning traditional furniture joinery | Small, refined one-step form | Fixed | Templates, routing, and wedged through-tenons |
| Classic beginner stool | Simple furniture project | Traditional step-stool silhouette | Fixed | Straightforward construction; paint or stain finish |
Use the table to narrow the field, then read the individual directions for the operations, tools, and material lists each plan actually uses. A stool that appears simple can become impractical if it requires a saw or joinery setup you do not own.

The 12 build directions
1. Straight-leg one-step stool
Ana White’s “Simple Step Stool Plans – Straight Legs” is the most direct utility build in this group. It uses a short cut list and a simple assembly sequence, making it suitable for a first shop project or a quick household reacher. The plan lists a measuring tape, pencil, safety glasses, drill, jigsaw, and sander. Its material list is specific: 27 inches of 1×3, 32 inches of 1×10, screws or pocket-hole screws, and wood glue. Do not substitute the quantities for another plan’s list; the board widths and cut dimensions determine the finished proportions.
Lay out every cut on the actual boards, dry-fit the legs and top, and check that the frame sits flat before driving the final screws. The plan describes both paint and stain approaches. If you stain, apply a clear polyurethane topcoat after the stain has dried, following the finish manufacturer’s directions for recoating and ventilation.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
2. Splayed-leg one-step stool
Ana White points readers from the straight-leg version to a splayed-leg alternative. The top and single-step purpose remain familiar, but the legs angle outward, changing the visual line and the way the feet meet the floor. The design is useful when you want a more furniture-like stance without adding a second step or folding hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAngled legs make layout more consequential than on the straight version. Mark the inside and outside faces of every leg, cut matching pairs together where possible, and verify that the feet contact the floor evenly. Because the cited plan does not establish a load rating or a measured stability advantage, treat the splayed form as a design and stance variation rather than a guaranteed safety improvement. Use the source plan’s cut list and assembly order instead of borrowing dimensions from the straight-leg model.
3. Kitchen cabinet reach stool
The Kreg kitchen project is aimed at reaching upper kitchen shelves in a small footprint. Its legs are connected with braces, so the project is a useful example of adding support members to a basic stool shape. The plan includes lumber, fasteners, glue, and tools appropriate to pocket-hole construction; follow its own cut list for board sizes and brace lengths.
Measure the cabinet or shelf you intend to reach before choosing the final height. A stool that clears one counter may place a user awkwardly at another. Assemble the leg pairs on a flat surface, install the braces in the sequence shown by the plan, and check diagonals before tightening every joint. Keep the top clear of overhanging handles and verify that the completed stool can be moved without catching on cabinet doors.
4. Two-tier child’s stool
Kreg’s children’s plan, described by Making Manzanita, has a top step and a lower step and is marked moderate difficulty. Two levels let a child climb in smaller increments, but child-focused styling is not the same as safety certification. Size the step spacing and overall height for the particular child and the sink or counter, and supervise use until you are confident the child can mount and dismount reliably.

Expect more parts than on a one-step stool: two treads, side members, and additional rails or supports. Label mirrored pieces before assembly so the lower step is installed at the intended height and faces the correct direction. Round over or ease exposed edges, remove every splinter, and test the stool on the actual floor surface. The plan’s moderate rating reflects the extra layout and assembly work, not a tested child load.

5. Bathroom sink stool
A bathroom stool is a use-specific adaptation rather than a separate universal dimension. Kreg’s collection includes bathroom and children’s options, and the children’s plan provides a starting point for a sink-height build. Measure from the floor to the basin controls, account for the user’s footwear, and decide whether one or two steps gives a natural hand position without leaning over the bowl.
Bathrooms expose wood to splashes and frequent cleaning. Seal all faces, edges, and end grain with a finish rated for the product’s intended environment, and allow the coating to cure fully before use. Keep the footprint clear of bath mats that can bunch under a foot. A fixed stool is often simpler to inspect than a folding one in a damp room; if you adapt a folding design, use the specified hinges and locking arrangement rather than improvising.
6. Vanity stool
Kreg lists a vanity stool among its project options. Compared with a plain utility reacher, a vanity stool places more emphasis on compact proportions, edge treatment, and finish because it remains visible beside furniture. Decide first whether the object is a standing step, a perch, or both; those uses lead to different top dimensions and leg clearances.

Make a full-size paper or cardboard template of the top and place it under the vanity to check knee and toe clearance. Keep the plan’s joinery and material schedule intact, then spend effort on uniform leg lengths, flush joints, and a smooth finish. Paint can coordinate with cabinetry, while stain highlights open-grain species; in either case, follow the chosen product’s surface-preparation, drying, and ventilation instructions.
7. Folding step stool
Woodsmith’s folding step-stool drawing provides a storage-friendly direction, with dimensions shown on a plan sheet dated March 30, 2009. A folding frame can disappear behind a door or beside an appliance, but hinges introduce alignment and pinch-point concerns that a fixed stool does not have. Use the complete drawing for dimensions, hardware locations, and the intended opening sequence.
Build and square each half of the frame before joining them. Install the specified hinges with the stool supported in its open position, then confirm that the spreader or locking parts engage completely and that no hinge binds through the full travel. Do not treat the 2009 drawing as a modern safety certification or infer a load capacity from its appearance. If the mechanism does not open flat and lock as designed, take the stool out of service until corrected.

8. Convertible shop stool/step ladder
Fisher’s Shop describes a double A-frame stool with nested flip-out steps. Half-lap and dado joinery make this a workshop project rather than a quick screw-assembled bench. The nested arrangement can provide more than one working height while keeping the stored package relatively compact, which is useful around a shop where tasks change.
Transfer the creator’s layout to full-size stock and cut one reference joint before repeating it. Half-laps must seat fully, and dados need consistent depth so the frames remain parallel. Dry-assemble both A-frames, operate the flip-out steps by hand, and look for interference before glue-up. This is a creator’s design description, not independent testing; do not assign it a rated ladder load or use it as a substitute for a certified access product.
9. Shaker hanging stool
Woodcraft’s “Simple Step Stool,” credited to Chad McClung and updated May 2, 2026, uses a Shaker-inspired one-step form with an elongated back, a hanging hole, a wide stance, and an arched stretcher. The hole lets you hang the stool on a suitable wall hook when it is not needed, keeping a narrow room clear.
The featured build is all poplar and uses screws concealed by plugs. Woodcraft notes that the front leg and step can be adapted to dovetail construction, but the shown version keeps the joinery simpler. Shape the arch with a template, sand the transition gradually, and test the hanging hole on scrap before drilling the finished back. A wall hook must be attached to framing or an appropriate anchor and positioned so the stool cannot swing into a walking path.
10. Braced kitchen stool
The Kreg kitchen project is also a useful braced-stool study: it uses three braces with a compact top. You can use this direction when you want the visual simplicity of a one-step stool but need a clear plan for placing multiple support members around the legs. The braces add parts and layout decisions; the available evidence does not establish a measured increase in strength.
Mark brace locations from a single reference edge so the assembly remains symmetrical. Clamp the legs in position, drill or drive fasteners without forcing the frame out of square, and inspect the underside for protruding screw tips. Keep the top size and lumber schedule tied to the exact kitchen plan you selected. If you change the height or width substantially, redraw the brace positions instead of assuming the original angles still fit.

11. Joinery-practice walnut stool
Tom McKenna’s Fine Woodworking project, dated March 20, 2020, treats a small stool as a traditional joinery lesson. Templates guide the shapes, while wedged through-tenons provide the visual and structural centerpiece. The result is more demanding and furniture-like than a screw-assembled utility stool, and the skills transfer to larger tables, benches, and cabinets.
The guide discusses common power tools such as a table saw and drill press. A planer and jointer are helpful, but it notes that lumber dealers may surface boards for builders who lack those machines. Make the templates accurately, rout or saw to the lines in controlled passes, and fit each tenon gradually rather than widening a mortise in one aggressive cut. Cut wedges only after the joints are fully fitted, and keep the walnut’s end grain oriented consistently for a clean appearance.
12. Classic beginner stool with finish choices
Minwax publishes a beginner-level classic step-stool plan with a downloadable PDF. It is a good choice when you want a straightforward furniture silhouette and an opportunity to practice a painted or stained finish without committing to complex traditional joinery.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the project to your tools and operations
There is no universal “beginner tool list.” Choose by the operations the selected plan requires:
- Basic cut-and-screw build: A measuring tape, pencil, safety glasses, drill, jigsaw, and sander cover the tools listed for Ana White’s straight-leg plan.
- Pocket-hole assembly: Kreg’s simple plan is labeled easy and includes pocket-hole joinery tools, a miter saw, drill, and related driving accessories. A pocket-hole jig is relevant to that plan, not automatically to all twelve designs.
- Braced kitchen construction: Add accurate crosscutting and clamping so braces meet the legs without twisting the frame.
- Shaped furniture work: Templates, a router or careful jigsaw work, rasps, and sanding are central to the Shaker and walnut directions.
- Traditional joinery: The walnut project benefits from a table saw and drill press; surfaced lumber can remove the need for a planer and jointer.
- Folding or convertible mechanisms: You need accurate hinge and joint layout, suitable bits, and a way to hold frames square while hardware is installed.
Buy or mill material only after selecting one plan. Ana White’s 27 inches of 1×3 and 32 inches of 1×10 are not interchangeable with the Kreg simple plan’s 1×8 and 1×2 boards, pocket-hole screws, grabber screws, and glue. The Kreg kitchen and children’s projects have their own lumber and cut guidance as well. Treat every list as a closed system unless you intentionally redesign the stool.

A build sequence that prevents avoidable errors
- Define the task. Measure the shelf, sink, counter, or work surface, and decide whether the user needs one step, two steps, a perch, or a changing shop height.
- Check the footprint. Mark the proposed legs on the floor with tape. Open cabinet doors, vanity drawers, and folding frames through their complete travel.
- Print and verify the plan. Confirm scale on any PDF or drawing and write the finished dimensions on a shop note before cutting.
- Prepare stock. Inspect boards for splits, cup, and loose knots in load-bearing areas. Mark a reference face and edge on every part.
- Cut matching parts together. Saw paired legs or rails as a set where practical, then label left and right pieces to avoid mirrored errors.
- Dry-assemble. Use clamps or temporary screws, check that the stool sits flat, and measure diagonals on rectangular frames.
- Install joinery and hardware. Follow the selected plan’s pocket-hole, screw, dado, tenon, brace, or hinge sequence. Do not substitute a folding hinge arrangement from another design.
- Ease and inspect. Round exposed edges, flush plugs, remove splinters, and confirm that no fastener point protrudes.
- Finish all faces. Sand progressively, coat the underside and end grain as well as visible faces, and respect the finish label’s cure time.
- Test before regular use. Place the stool on its intended floor, apply hand pressure while standing beside it, and watch for rocking, joint movement, hinge binding, or surface slipping. Stop and repair any defect.
Safety rules for fixed and ladder-type stools
The American Ladder Institute defines a ladder-type step stool as a self-supporting, foldable, portable ladder no more than 32 inches overall, with flat steps and no pail shelf. That definition describes a category; it does not certify a homemade project or provide a load rating.
For a ladder-type design, use the following operating rules:
- Set all four rails on level, firm ground.
- Open the stool completely and lock its spreaders before stepping up.
- Never use it partially open or as a single ladder.
- Keep your body near the middle; leaning sideways can tip the stool.
- Keep hinges, braces, and locking parts free of paint buildup that could prevent full engagement.
- Remove a stool from service if it rocks, splits, loosens, or has damaged hardware.
These instructions apply specifically to ladder-type step stools. A fixed furniture stool still needs sound joinery, a flat base, non-protruding fasteners, and a surface appropriate to its environment. Do not claim that a child’s appearance, a wider stance, or an added brace proves compliance with a standard.
Finishing, storage, and maintenance decisions
Choose the finish after deciding where the stool will live. A painted stool can hide mixed grain and coordinate with cabinetry; stain emphasizes grain but generally needs a clear protective topcoat. Follow the chosen product’s directions for sanding, coats, drying, cleanup, and ventilation. In a bathroom or kitchen, seal end grain and inspect the underside, where splash damage often begins.
Storage is part of the design, not an afterthought. A fixed one-step stool can slide under a counter, the Shaker model can hang from its back hole, a folding model can stand behind a door, and the convertible shop design nests its frames. Measure the storage location with doors closed and account for handles, baseboards, and the stool’s folded or nested thickness.
At regular intervals, retighten accessible screws, check plugged areas for movement, inspect braces and tenons, and verify that a folding mechanism still locks fully. Recoat worn finish before moisture reaches bare wood. Keep a simple note of the plan and any modifications so replacement parts can be cut to the original dimensions.
How to choose in five decisions
- User and task: Pick a kitchen reacher, bathroom adaptation, child’s two-tier stool, vanity piece, or shop mechanism before considering style.
- Height and step count: One step is simpler; two steps reduce the jump to a higher surface but add rails and assembly work.
- Footprint and storage: Fixed, hanging, folding, and nested forms solve different space problems.
- Joinery appetite: Screws and pocket holes shorten the build; braces, half-laps, dados, and wedged through-tenons turn it into a skills project.
- Available tools: Select the plan whose saws, drills, templates, and hardware you can use accurately, or budget for milling and tool access before buying lumber.
Once those choices are made, use the exact source plan for dimensions and hardware, build a dry assembly first, and treat stability and locking as conditions to verify rather than qualities to assume.
