You can give a thrifted glass or ceramic vase the visual weight and matte texture of stoneware with water-based paint and baking soda. The method is a faux finish: it coats the existing vessel rather than firing, reforming, or converting it into stoneware. Choose the vase for its silhouette, build the texture in thin coats, let it cure overnight, and use the finished piece as decorative pottery rather than assuming it is waterproof or food-safe.
The most reliable workflow is simple: wash and dry the vase, mix baking soda gradually into acrylic or latex paint, brush on an even coat without disturbing wet areas, allow 30–40 minutes for touch-drying, add another coat if needed, and wait overnight before putting the vase on display.

What the project makes—and what it does not
Paint and baking soda can make an ordinary vase look like a hand-built, matte clay vessel. The baking soda thickens the water-based paint and leaves a fine, mineral-looking texture as the coating dries. Horizontal brush marks can suggest the irregular surface of a thrown pot, while a smoother application gives a cleaner contemporary finish.
The original material stays underneath. A glass vase remains glass; a ceramic vase remains ceramic. Nothing in this process is fired in a kiln, fused to the body, or structurally strengthened. Treat the result as painted decor. The available instructions do not establish waterproofing, washability, food-contact safety, long-term adhesion, or resistance to repeated handling.

That distinction affects how you select and use the piece. A vase with an attractive profile, narrow neck, or unusual handles is a good candidate even if its original color is unappealing, because the opaque coating hides it. A cracked, unstable, or leaking vessel is not repaired by this finish.
Choose the right thrifted vase
Prioritize shape over color
Look for a form you would buy as pottery: a rounded bottle, a straight-sided bud vase, a wide low bowl, or a sculptural piece with a pinched neck. Paint covers the existing decoration, so faded graphics and mismatched colors are not a problem. Check the base for wobbling and inspect the rim and handles for chips that could continue to break away.
Glass and ceramic both work
The cited instructions specifically address cleaning glass, while the project is also commonly demonstrated on thrifted ceramic vessels. Either substrate can accept a decorative paint layer when it is clean and dry. Smooth glass may need especially careful preparation because dust, skin oils, and condensation can interfere with adhesion.
Decide how the vase will be used
Plan for dried stems, faux flowers, or an empty display object. One tutorial from It’s Always Autumn cautions that water may damage the baking-soda finish and recommends faux flowers. If you want fresh flowers, place a separate watertight container inside the painted vase and keep the painted exterior dry. That is a practical arrangement workaround, not proof that the coating itself is waterproof.

Materials and tools
- A thrifted glass or ceramic vase in sound condition
- Water-based acrylic or latex paint
- Baking soda
- A small mixing cup or bowl
- A measuring spoon
- A foam paint brush or a basic bristle brush
- Dish soap, clean water, and a lint-free towel
- Protective covering for the work surface
- Optional matte-finish sealer spray
Use water-based paint so the powder can be incorporated into a spreadable coating. The instructions do not establish that one paint brand, color, or sheen performs better than another. Matte or low-sheen colors usually reinforce the pottery illusion, but the texture—not a named brand—is doing most of the visual work.

There is no single tested universal ratio in the available instructions. Start with a source-attributed formula, then adjust in small increments until the mixture spreads without running or dragging.
| Instruction source | Paint | Baking soda | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARM & HAMMER tutorial | 1 cup water-based acrylic or latex paint | 1 tablespoon as a starting ratio | Mix thoroughly until the paint is thicker and mousse-like. |
| ARM & HAMMER texture adjustment | 1 cup paint | Up to 4 teaspoons for a thicker texture | Add gradually; stop when the texture suits the finish you want. |
| Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago tutorial, 2026 | 1/3 cup water-based paint | 1 tablespoon | A more concentrated starting mixture than the ARM & HAMMER formula; adjust by feel rather than treating it as a rule. |
These recipes are different, so do not present either one as the correct proportion for every paint. A useful approach is to measure the paint first, add part of the baking soda, stir completely, and test a little on the underside or another hidden area. Add more powder only when you need additional body or visible grain.
For a smoother matte finish
Use the lower end of the powder range and mix until the paint is uniform. The coating should be thick enough to cover the original color but still glide from the brush. A smoother mix is easier to level and leaves less pronounced brush texture.

For a more visibly textured finish
Add baking soda in small portions, mixing after each addition. Stop before the paste becomes crumbly or difficult to spread. More powder can create a heavier, chalkier surface, but it can also make the coat catch on the brush and leave ridges that are difficult to correct once dry.

Prepare the vase before painting
- Remove labels and residue. Peel off price stickers and wipe away adhesive. Any oily residue can become a weak spot under the coating.
- Wash the surface. The ARM & HAMMER tutorial directs users to clean glass with soap and water. Wash the entire exterior, including the underside of the rim and any handles or recesses.
- Rinse thoroughly. Soap left behind can change how the paint wets the surface.
- Dry with a lint-free towel. Follow the wash with complete air-drying if moisture remains around the base or inside the neck. Do not paint while condensation is visible.
- Protect the work area. Set the vase on a covered, stable surface where it can remain undisturbed between coats and during overnight curing.
Do not skip cleaning because the vase looks visually clean. Thrifted pieces can carry dust, polish, skin oils, or old residue that is not obvious until a painted patch separates or beads.
Mix the faux-stoneware coating
- Measure the amount of water-based paint you expect to use for the first coat.
- Add the baking soda gradually. If you are following the ARM & HAMMER starting point, use 1 tablespoon per 1 cup of paint; if you are scaling the Goodwill 2026 formula, use 1 tablespoon per 1/3 cup. These are starting points, not performance guarantees.
- Stir thoroughly until no dry pockets remain and the mixture looks consistently thick. The ARM & HAMMER description compares the target texture to mousse.
- Let the mixture sit briefly, then stir again. This makes it easier to spot powder that has settled at the bottom.
- Brush a small test patch on an inconspicuous area. If the coating runs, mix in a little more baking soda. If it skips, clumps, or feels sandy, work in a small amount of paint before adding any more powder.
Mix only what you can apply while it remains workable. If the paste thickens in the cup, stir it before deciding to add liquid; adding water changes the paint-to-powder balance and is not specified by the cited instructions.
Apply the paint for a pottery effect
First coat
- Load the foam or bristle brush lightly. A heavily loaded brush makes runs and can pull the mixture away from the glass.
- Cover one manageable section at a time. Keep the coat even rather than trying to create all of the texture in a single pass.
- For a thrown-pottery impression, use horizontal strokes around the body. Vary pressure slightly, but avoid random scrubbing.
- Do not repeatedly brush over an area that is beginning to set. The ARM & HAMMER guidance specifically advises against working back and forth over wet sections, which can lift the coating and leave bald patches.
- Check the neck, shoulder, base, and any handle junctions for drips before leaving the vase to dry.
Second coat
Allow the first layer to dry to the touch for about 30–40 minutes, as stated in the ARM & HAMMER tutorial. The time is an approximate instructional figure, not a guarantee for every room, paint, humidity level, or coat thickness. If the surface still feels cool, soft, or tacky, wait longer.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Add another thin coat when the original color shows through, the texture is too subtle, or you need to even out coverage. Follow the same brush direction and stop touching an area once it has begun to dry. Two controlled coats are preferable to one overloaded coat that stays soft and develops sagging marks.

Dry to the touch is not fully cured
The stated 30–40-minute period describes when the paint may feel dry on the surface. It does not establish handling strength or water resistance. Leave the completed vase overnight before moving it into regular display, following the ARM & HAMMER recommendation for curing.
What an optional matte sealer can and cannot tell you
The ARM & HAMMER instructions list matte-finish sealer spray as optional. A sealer may change the sheen and feel of the surface, but the available guidance does not verify that a particular spray is compatible with every paint-and-baking-soda mixture, nor does it establish waterproofing, washability, or food safety after sealing. If you use one, follow its label, apply light coats in ventilation, and test compatibility on a hidden area first.
Do not interpret a sealed surface as suitable for drinking vessels, food storage, soaking, or routine washing unless the specific products provide those approvals. This project has been described as decorative surface painting, not as a method for making a container sanitary or watertight.

Choose the look before the final coat
Quiet, modern pottery
Use a consistent color, a lower powder level, and light horizontal strokes. Keep the rim and base clean so the silhouette reads sharply. This approach works well when the vase has a strong geometric shape that should remain the focus.
Hand-thrown character
Use a slightly thicker mixture and let subtle brush variation remain visible. Horizontal marks around a round body can suggest wheel-thrown rings. Avoid deep ridges that catch dust or make the vase difficult to handle.
Stone-like contrast
Apply one even base color, allow it to dry, and use a second thin color only where you want variation. Because the instructions do not establish a tested layering system, keep each layer light and allow it to dry before deciding whether another color is needed.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The paint beads or pulls away from glass. | Surface residue, moisture, or insufficient cleaning. | Let the piece dry completely, wash with soap and water again, rinse, and dry with a lint-free towel before recoating. |
| The mixture runs down the vase. | Coat is too thick or the mixture is too fluid for the brush load. | Wipe away the run while it is workable, reduce the amount on the brush, and add baking soda gradually to the remaining mixture if it still lacks body. |
| The finish looks patchy. | Uneven coverage or brushing over areas at different drying stages. | Let the coat dry, then add a thin, even second coat. Avoid correcting a half-dry patch by repeatedly scrubbing it. |
| The surface is gritty and difficult to spread. | Too much baking soda for the paint volume. | Blend in a small amount of paint until the paste is spreadable. Do not add water as an automatic fix. |
| Brush marks are much stronger than intended. | Heavy pressure, a stiff brush, or a mixture that is too thick. | Allow the coat to dry, then use a lighter application for the next coat. A foam brush can soften the appearance of marks. |
| The finish is damaged by water. | The coating is decorative and has not been established as waterproof. | Keep water out of the painted vessel. Use faux flowers, dried stems, or a separate watertight insert for fresh arrangements. |
| The coating scratches during handling. | Insufficient curing or weak adhesion caused by contamination. | Give the piece a full overnight cure before judging it. If damage continues, remove loose paint, clean the surface, and test a new mixture on a small area. |
Display and care
- Handle the vase by its solid body rather than a thin painted rim or decorative handle.
- Dust with a soft, dry cloth or a gentle brush instead of washing or soaking the surface.
- Keep the piece away from standing water, condensation, and damp windowsills.
- Use a liner or separate container for fresh stems so water cannot contact the painted interior or run down the exterior.
- Keep the finished object for decorative display, not food, drink, cosmetics, or any use requiring a verified sanitary surface.
- Place it where the uncured coating will not be touched during the overnight curing period.
When this project is a good choice
This technique is useful when the vase has a shape worth keeping but an outdated color, glossy finish, or mismatched pattern. It also lets you coordinate several unrelated thrift-store pieces with one paint color and texture. The process is inexpensive in terms of materials, but the available instructions do not provide a verified cost comparison, durability rating, or sustainability measurement, so those benefits should not be assumed.
Choose another approach if you need a vessel that can be washed frequently, hold water without an insert, contact food, or withstand commercial-level handling. Paint and baking soda can change the appearance dramatically, but they do not replace a fired ceramic body or a tested protective coating.
Quick Recap
A concise project checklist
- Select a stable vase for its shape, not its existing color.
- Wash with soap and water, rinse, and dry completely with a lint-free towel.
- Start with either 1 tablespoon baking soda per 1 cup paint from the ARM & HAMMER tutorial or the 1 tablespoon per 1/3 cup paint formula published by Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago in 2026.
- Add powder gradually because the two instructions produce different concentrations and neither is established as universally best.
- Apply with a foam or bristle brush, using horizontal strokes if you want a thrown-pottery impression.
- Stop brushing an area once it begins to dry.
- Wait about 30–40 minutes before considering another coat, and wait longer if the surface remains tacky.
- Allow the finished vase to cure overnight.
- Treat it as decorative, keep water away from the coating, and use an inner watertight vessel for fresh flowers.
