Folded cardstock tent cards are the quickest reliable way to make Thanksgiving place cards that stand by themselves. Print or draw a simple shape on cardstock, cut it out, write one guest’s name, and fold it so the name faces the setting. From that base, you can switch to fall leaves, a sculpted turkey holder, or a gratitude prompt without changing the seating plan.

This guide explains which format fits your time and table, the exact materials for each version, how to make a consistent batch, and how to place and personalize the cards so guests can read them easily.
Choose the right Thanksgiving place-card format
Decide first whether the card’s main job is assigning seats or adding an activity. A folded card is best when you need many names prepared quickly. A leaf card adds a seasonal shape while remaining paper-only. A turkey holder creates a small centerpiece at each setting but requires modeling and drying. A gratitude card can combine a name with a conversation prompt.

Comparative prices, durability ratings, and guest-response measurements are not established for these designs, so choose by construction effort and the function you want rather than by an assumed performance difference.
Gather supplies before you start
For folded or leaf cards
- Cardstock or another thicker paper that can hold a crease.
- A pen or marker for names and short notes.
- Scissors.
- A printer and a printable template if you want identical outlines instead of hand-drawn rectangles or leaves.
For the turkey holder
- Modeling compound for the turkey body.
- A chenille stem to hold the name card.
- Construction paper for the label and details.
- Markers or gel pens.
- Optional decorative pieces, such as wiggle eyes, if you want them.
The instructions from Hersheyland and the printable-card tutorial use the first group: cardstock-style paper, a writing tool, scissors, and an optional template. Crayola’s turkey project adds the modeling compound, chenille stem, and construction paper. Keep the extra materials in that section rather than buying them for a basic tent card.
Make folded cardstock tent cards
A tent card is a rectangle folded in half so two panels meet at the top and the card stands on the table. It is the simplest documented standing design and works whether you write names by hand or print a template.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Decide the finished orientation. Choose whether guests will read the name from across the table, from the side, or from both directions. A two-panel tent can carry the same name on both faces when people approach from opposite sides.
- Prepare the outlines. For a small batch, draw matching rectangles on cardstock and mark a center fold. For a more uniform set, print a place-card template on cardstock and use its outlines. Leave enough blank area around the name for comfortable reading.
- Cut the cards. Follow the outer lines with scissors. If the template includes several cards on one sheet, cut between the cards before folding. Trim small uneven edges now, while the sheet is flat.
- Mark and fold the center. Score or lightly mark the midpoint, then fold the cardstock so the printed or written faces point outward. Press along the crease to help each card stand.
- Add the names. Write one guest’s name on each card with a pen or marker, or add the names after printing if the template is blank. Use the largest clear lettering that fits the available panel; do not crowd the name with flourishes.
- Check the batch. Set every card upright on a flat surface. Confirm that each name is spelled correctly, every fold faces the same direction, and no card rocks because of an uneven cut.
Hand-cut rectangles versus a printable template
Hand-cut rectangles are useful when you need only a few cards or want a deliberately simple look. A template reduces measuring and makes the outlines consistent across a larger table. The printable-card instructions also call for cutting, scoring or folding, and then writing the names, so printing does not remove the finishing steps.

Lettering that stays readable
Write names before adding decorative marks. Keep the baseline level, leave space at the edges, and use strong contrast between ink and paper. If a name is long, use a single line only when it remains easy to read; otherwise arrange it on two balanced lines. A short role such as “host” or a dietary note can go below the name, but only if it does not compete with the seating information.
Turn cardstock into fall leaves
Fall-colored leaf cards provide a seasonal silhouette without a separate holder. Hallmark’s Thanksgiving craft guidance describes cutting leaf shapes from cardstock in autumn colors, which you can adapt for assigned seating.
- Choose two or three related fall colors so the table looks coordinated rather than random.
- Draw a simple leaf outline or print a leaf template on cardstock.
- Cut one leaf for each guest and write the name across the widest part of the shape.
- If the leaves need to stand, add a center fold or place each leaf against an existing napkin, plate, or holder. The leaf itself does not automatically create a stand.
- Keep the lettering on the upper surface that guests can see from their approach path.
Varying the leaf shapes slightly can look handmade, while identical outlines create a more formal arrangement. The paper-only approach is useful when you want decoration but do not want to sculpt or assemble a separate object.
Build a turkey place-card holder
The Crayola project uses modeling compound to make a turkey, a chenille stem to grip a small name card, and construction paper with markers or gel pens for the label. It is more involved than a folded card because the holder must be shaped and allowed to dry overnight.

- Form the body. Shape the modeling compound into a stable turkey body with a broad enough base to remain upright.
- Add the card support. Insert or attach the chenille stem so its upper end can hold a small paper name card. Position it where the card will be visible without covering the turkey.
- Cut the paper details. Use construction paper for the name card and any feathers, beak, or other shapes you want to add.
- Decorate. Use markers or gel pens for the name and facial details. Optional pieces such as wiggle eyes can add character, but they are not required for the holder to function.
- Dry completely. Follow the project’s instruction to let the modeled holder dry overnight before moving it to the table. Prepare the cards while the holder is drying so the final assembly is ready together.
- Test the balance. Insert the name card and check that the turkey does not tip. If it leans, adjust the card height or support before guests arrive.
Reserve this format for a table where the craft itself is part of the decoration. It uses more materials and preparation than the cardstock tent, so it is not the efficient choice for a last-minute batch.
Make a place card do double duty
Add a gratitude prompt
Hallmark’s Thanksgiving guidance includes printable gratitude conversation cards. You can combine that idea with seating by putting the guest’s name on the front and a short prompt on the reverse or inside fold. Examples include “Something I appreciated this year” or “A tradition I hope we keep.” Keep the prompt brief enough that the card still reads first as a place marker.
Label more than seats
Hersheyland’s printable place-card directions also allow the same small format to identify items beyond guests. A card can label a buffet dish or another table element when you need a clear, coordinated sign. Use a distinct heading such as “sweet potatoes” so a food label is not mistaken for a person’s seat assignment.
Optional candy attachment
Hersheyland describes an optional candy attachment. Treat it as an embellishment, not a structural requirement: make the card stable and readable before adding anything. The craft instructions do not establish food-contact or material-safety properties, so do not describe a paper, adhesive, ink, or attachment as food-safe without separate authoritative evidence.

Arrange the cards for a clear, festive table
- Make a seating list first. Write the final order separately so a spelling change or late RSVP does not force you to redesign every card.
- Place one card at each setting. Put the name where a guest can see it while approaching the table, not behind a tall centerpiece or folded napkin.
- Keep the orientation consistent. Face all tent cards toward the same viewing direction, or write both panels when guests sit on opposite sides.
- Use the same visual system. Repeat the paper color family, lettering style, or shape across the set. A leaf, tent, and turkey can coexist, but one dominant style will look more organized.
- Separate labels from names. If you also label dishes, use a different shape, border, or heading so guests can distinguish seating cards immediately.
Before serving, walk around the table from each approach point and read the names at normal standing distance. This practical check catches cards hidden by décor or turned away from the person who needs them.
Personalize without losing legibility
- Use each guest’s preferred name or spelling from your seating list.
- Match ink color to the cardstock while preserving strong contrast.
- Add one restrained motif—such as a small leaf vein, dot, or border—instead of filling the name panel.
- For children, use a playful color or simple illustration while keeping the name large and clear.
- For guests who may have difficulty reading small print, increase the lettering size and simplify the decoration. The available craft instructions do not specify a tested font size or accessibility standard, so judge the result at the table rather than relying on a fixed number.
Troubleshoot common problems
The card will not stand
Check that the cardstock is thick enough to hold the crease, the fold is centered, and both panels are similar in size. Trim an uneven bottom edge. For a leaf design, add a fold or use a separate support because a flat leaf has no built-in stand.
The name is hard to read
Rewrite it with fewer decorative strokes, move it away from the edge, or use a higher-contrast marker. If the name is too long for one line, split it into two lines with clear spacing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe printed outlines are inconsistent
Confirm that the printer is using the template at its intended scale rather than fitting it unpredictably to the page. If the sheets still vary, use the printed outlines as guides and trim all cards against one finished sample.

The turkey tips over
Remove excess height from the card, lower the chenille-stem support, or widen and reshape the modeling-compound base. Let the holder dry overnight as directed before making the final balance check.
You have more guests than cards
Use the same rectangle pattern to hand-cut additional cards, then repeat the lettering and fold check. A consistent paper color and border can make a small emergency batch blend with printed cards.
A simple preparation sequence
- Finalize names, seat assignments, and any dish labels.
- Choose one primary format and gather only its required materials.
- Make one sample card or holder and test its visibility and balance at the table.
- Cut or shape the remaining pieces in a batch.
- Write or print all names, checking spelling against the final list.
- Fold, assemble, and inspect every card.
- For modeled holders, complete the drying step overnight before setting the table.
- Place the finished cards after the centerpiece and place settings are in position, then walk the table once more from the guests’ viewpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Thanksgiving place cards without a printer?
Yes. Draw matching rectangles or leaf outlines directly on cardstock, cut them with scissors, fold the rectangles, and write the names with a pen or marker. A printer is only needed for the template-based route.
Recommended Free Tools
Which design is best for a large guest list?
Folded cardstock tent cards require the fewest materials and include their own stand, making them the most efficient choice when you need many consistent cards.
How far ahead can I make turkey holders?
Complete the modeled holder early enough to let it dry overnight, then add and test the name card after it has hardened.
Can a place card also start a Thanksgiving conversation?
Yes. Put the guest’s name on the visible panel and a brief gratitude prompt on the reverse or inside, following the conversation-card idea described in Thanksgiving craft guidance.
