Most toilet problems can be narrowed down before you buy a part. Remove the tank lid, observe what the water and flush mechanism are doing, and identify the toilet’s make, model, and valve style. Then use the symptom-specific checks below to decide whether adjustment, cleaning, a compatible seal or valve, a plunger, or professional help is appropriate.

Start with a safe diagnosis

Turn the toilet’s shutoff valve clockwise if the bowl is rising, water is spraying, or you need to remove a tank component. Flush once only when the bowl level is safe, then remove the tank lid and set it on a protected surface. Keep towels nearby and avoid forcing porcelain fittings.

Before ordering anything, record the manufacturer and model number. Look under the tank lid, inside the tank, or on the bowl where the manufacturer places identification marks. Note whether the toilet uses a traditional rubber flapper or a canister-style seal, and note the fill-valve arrangement. Replacement parts are not universally interchangeable.

  • Have a flashlight, adjustable wrench, towels, and gloves available.
  • Use a toilet (flange) plunger for a bowl obstruction and a water-closet, or closet, auger when a plunger does not clear it.
  • Do not keep flushing a bowl whose water is rising.
  • After every adjustment, run one controlled test flush while watching the tank and the floor around the base.

Quick symptom guide

What you observe What it can indicate First check
Water runs continuously A binding trip lever, fill valve that does not shut off, water entering the overflow, or a flush seal that is not closing Handle arm and chain, tank level, overflow tube, and flapper or canister seal
Toilet refills briefly by itself Tank water is slowly leaking into the bowl through an overflow or worn or dirty seal Water level, chain slack, and seal condition; perform a dye test
Bowl water rises or will not drain A clog in the toilet or nearby drain path Stop flushing and use a toilet plunger, followed by a closet auger if needed
Flush is weak or incomplete Incorrect tank level, a flush seal that does not open or close correctly, or a possible obstruction Tank level, handle and chain movement, seal travel, and obstruction signs
Water appears around the floor connection Possible wax-ring or flange failure, or a leak from the tank, supply line, or another damaged part Dry the area and trace the source during filling and flushing

1. A toilet that runs continuously

A continuously running toilet wastes water and usually has a visible cause inside the tank. Kohler Assist identifies a binding trip lever, water overflowing into the flush-valve overflow, or debris under the fill-valve cap as possible causes. A broader Kohler troubleshooting guide also directs owners to inspect the flapper or canister seal, chain, fill valve, and overflow tube.

Inspect before replacing anything

  1. Remove the tank lid and watch the handle arm as you press and release the handle. The arm should return freely rather than bind against the tank.
  2. Check the chain. It should lift the flapper or canister seal when the handle is pressed, then leave enough slack for the seal to settle completely. A chain caught under the seal can hold it open.
  3. Look at the water level while the toilet is idle. If water is flowing into the overflow tube, the fill valve is not shutting off or the level is set too high. Follow the adjustment method specified for that valve.
  4. Inspect the flush seal for dirt, warping, cracking, or a poor seat. A worn rubber flapper or canister seal can let water escape even when the handle is untouched.
  5. If the fill valve is the suspected problem, inspect its cap and inlet for debris and clean it only as the toilet manufacturer directs.

Choose the repair that matches the failed part

Confirmed or strongly indicated condition Appropriate next action Compatibility check
Handle or trip lever binds Clean, reposition, or replace the lever after confirming it is the obstruction Match the replacement to the handle and tank design
Water enters the overflow Adjust or clean the fill valve according to its instructions; replace it if it will not shut off Match the valve to the toilet model and tank arrangement
Flapper or canister seal is dirty or worn Clean the sealing surface or replace the failed seal Use the correct flapper shape or canister seal for that flush valve
Cause is not clear Do not install both a new flapper and fill valve automatically; inspect again or use model-specific service guidance Identify the make, model, and valve style first

A replacement fill valve is a reasonable remedy when inspection shows that cleaning and adjustment do not stop the flow. A replacement flapper or canister seal is appropriate when that seal is visibly damaged or fails a leak check. The diagnosis should determine which part you buy; a running toilet does not automatically need both.

2. A toilet that refills on its own (phantom refilling)

Phantom refilling is the brief hiss or refill cycle that occurs even though nobody has flushed. The fill valve is responding to a drop in tank water. That drop commonly comes from water spilling over the overflow or slowly leaking through a worn or dirty flapper or canister seal.

Check the tank and seal

  1. Wait until the toilet has finished a normal refill, then listen for a short cycle later.
  2. Look for a thin stream entering the overflow tube. If you see one, the tank level or fill-valve shutoff needs attention.
  3. Press the handle lightly without flushing. If the chain is tight, catches, or prevents the seal from settling, add the slack specified by the valve or flush assembly.
  4. Inspect the flapper or canister seal for mineral debris, distortion, or a damaged edge. Clean it only if the manufacturer permits cleaning; replace it when it remains worn or distorted.

Confirm a silent leak with a dye test

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission recommends placing a dye tablet or food coloring in the tank and waiting 15 minutes without flushing. If colored water appears in the bowl, the tank is leaking through the flapper. This test confirms a tank-to-bowl leak; it does not identify every possible source of water around the toilet.

The same utility states that “A leaking toilet can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water in just a few days.” Treat that as the utility’s attributed estimate, not a guaranteed amount for every toilet or leak rate.

Repair after confirmation

Adjust the tank water level if it is reaching the overflow, correct chain slack if the chain is holding the seal open, and replace a worn or dirty seal that fails the dye test. Verify the result by repeating the 15-minute observation after the repair. If the toilet still cycles, inspect the fill valve and overflow again and consult the toilet’s model-specific instructions.

3. A clogged toilet

A rising bowl is a stop sign: do not flush again. Close the shutoff valve if the level continues to climb, protect the floor with towels, and let the water settle before choosing a tool.

Use a toilet plunger first

A toilet or flange plunger is shaped to seal the toilet outlet. Center its flange over the drain opening, keep enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber, and work the handle with controlled strokes so the seal stays engaged. If the water begins draining, test with a small flush only after the bowl has returned to a normal level.

Move to a closet auger when appropriate

A water-closet auger is designed to pass through a toilet trapway and reach an obstruction that a plunger cannot dislodge. Feed the cable according to the tool’s instructions, turn it against resistance, and withdraw it carefully. Avoid improvised metal rods that can scratch the porcelain or damage the trapway.

Tool Use it when What it addresses
Toilet (flange) plunger The bowl is blocked and the plunger can form a seal over the outlet A clog that can be moved by pressure and suction at the bowl opening
Closet auger A plunger does not clear the blockage or the obstruction is lodged in the trapway A clog that requires a cable to reach into the toilet’s internal passage

When a clog needs broader diagnosis

If the toilet remains blocked after correct use of both tools, or the problem returns repeatedly, the obstruction may be beyond the bowl or connected to the building drain. The available troubleshooting guidance supports a plunger or water-closet auger as the tool path, but it does not establish a complete diagnosis for recurring clogs. Arrange a drain-system assessment rather than repeatedly forcing the same blockage.

4. A weak or incomplete flush

A weak flush does not have one universal fix. The supported first checks are the tank water level, flush-seal movement, and a possible obstruction. Treat these as diagnostic observations, not proof that every weak flush has the same cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check water and mechanism movement

  1. Let the tank finish filling, then compare its water level with the marked operating level or the model’s instructions. A level that is too low can reduce the water available for the flush.
  2. Press the handle while watching the chain and seal. The seal should lift enough to release the tank water and then close without catching.
  3. Check whether the handle arm or chain is loose, binding, or only partially lifting the seal. Correct the adjustment for that assembly.
  4. Look for signs of an obstruction if the bowl rises, drains slowly, or the flush lacks force in a way that resembles a partial clog. Use the toilet-plunger or closet-auger path if a clog is indicated.

If the tank reaches its proper level, the flush seal travels correctly, and no obstruction is evident, use the toilet’s model-specific troubleshooting information or call a plumber. Do not assume a rim-jet, vent, or trapway modification is required; the cited guidance does not establish a universal remedy for those components.

5. Water around the base

Water pooling at the floor connection often points to a failed wax ring or flange, according to Oatey’s leak guidance. The same guidance distinguishes a base leak from water escaping at the tank, supply line, or another damaged part. A puddle alone cannot prove which component failed, so trace the source before removing the toilet.

Trace the leak

  1. Dry the floor, tank exterior, supply connection, and the area beneath the bowl with clean towels.
  2. Watch while the tank refills. Water appearing at the supply connection or tank indicates a different repair from water that emerges only when you flush.
  3. Run one controlled flush and observe the entire perimeter of the base. Note whether water begins at the rear, a side, the tank connection, or directly beneath the bowl.
  4. Check whether the toilet rocks. Movement can accompany flange trouble, but rocking by itself does not identify the failed part.

Understand the scope of a wax-ring or flange repair

Repairing a failed base seal may require shutting off and draining the toilet, disconnecting the supply, lifting the fixture, inspecting the flange, and resetting the toilet with the appropriate seal. That is a fixture-removal job, not an external caulk repair. Caulk can hide the path of a leak while the underlying seal continues to fail.

Get professional help when the toilet is unstable, the flange is damaged, the leak continues after a reset, the floor is soft, or you are not comfortable lifting the fixture. Water from a tank fitting or supply line may be repairable without removing the toilet, but confirm the source first.

Cleaning, adjusting, or replacing: a practical decision framework

Use the least invasive action that addresses an observed failure. Cleaning is sensible when debris is visibly preventing a valve or seal from closing and the manufacturer permits cleaning. Adjustment is appropriate when the chain or water level is clearly out of position. Replacement is justified when a seal is worn, a fill valve will not shut off after cleaning and adjustment, or a component fails the model-specific inspection.

  • Running or phantom refill: compare cleaning or adjustment with replacement based on the failed seal or fill valve, not on the symptom alone.
  • Seal choice: a flapper and a canister seal are different parts; match the toilet’s flush-valve design.
  • Fill-valve choice: confirm tank geometry and the toilet model before buying a replacement.
  • Clog tool choice: start with a toilet plunger and use a closet auger when the obstruction requires access through the trapway.
  • Base leak: consider a wax ring only after tracing the leak to the floor connection; a diagnosed flange problem may require additional repair.

When to stop the DIY repair

Stop and arrange qualified plumbing help if the bowl repeatedly overflows, a clog returns after clearing, the toilet rocks or the floor is damaged, the flange is broken, water continues at the base after a reset, or you cannot identify the correct replacement part. A controlled diagnosis prevents unnecessary part swaps and limits water damage.
