The most reliable way to add storage under a small bathroom sink is to choose the bins first, measure the cabinet and plumbing, then build a shallow pull-out box around those measurements. That reverses the usual approach of buying a shelf and hoping it fits. The featured bin-based project uses a small clearance allowance, runner slats positioned from each bin’s lip, and a gap between bins so the containers can slide in and out without binding.
Your cabinet, pipes, door opening and bins will not necessarily match the example dimensions. Treat the numbers below as a measured case study, not a standard plan. A dry fit before final assembly is what prevents a neat-looking drawer from becoming unusable once it meets the drain, supply lines or cabinet face frame.

Why a bin-first pull-out works under a small sink
Under-sink cabinets lose usable volume because the drain and supply pipes occupy the center, while the opening may be narrower than the cabinet interior. A fixed shelf often leaves dead space around the plumbing and forces you to reach behind cleaning supplies. A low box that carries removable plastic bins turns that awkward volume into individual pull-out compartments.
The key is that the box is sized to the actual bins you intend to use. The bin width, depth, height and lip geometry determine the interior width, runner position and spacing. If you start with a nominal “standard” cabinet dimension, even a fraction of an inch can make a bin jam or leave too much side-to-side movement.

This approach also keeps the containers removable. You can pull a bin forward to see its contents without unloading the whole cabinet, while still leaving a defined route around the plumbing. It is particularly useful for toiletries, spare soap, paper goods and small cleaning items that otherwise disappear at the back.
Measure the cabinet before cutting anything
Empty the cabinet completely. Measure the usable interior rather than relying on the cabinet’s advertised width. Record the width at the front and at the back, the depth from the opening to the rear obstruction, and the height available below the sink bowl. Then measure the clear door opening and any face-frame rails that could narrow the path of the box.
1. Record the usable opening
- Measure the narrowest horizontal opening the box must pass through, not just the interior width behind the doors.
- Measure depth to the point where a pipe, valve, cabinet back or wall stops the box.
- Measure height from the cabinet floor to the lowest sink or plumbing component that the box must pass beneath.
- Open and close the doors while measuring so you notice hinges, bumpers and the sweep of the door.
2. Map every obstruction
Trace the drain, P-trap, supply lines, shutoff valves and any disposal or filter equipment. Note which parts are fixed and which need occasional access. A drawer that clears the pipe when closed can still collide with it during travel if the pipe sits in the pull-out’s path. Keep a route to the shutoffs; storage should not require dismantling the unit to stop a leak.
3. Check the floor and walls
Look for a raised cabinet floor, uneven tile, a rear stretcher or a wall that is not square. These conditions can change the box depth or cause a runner to sit out of level. Measure at several points and design to the smallest usable dimension.
Choose the bins, then derive the box dimensions
Pick plastic storage bins that suit the items you plan to store, but do not buy several containers until you have checked their real dimensions. Measure each bin at its widest point, including handles or flanges, and measure the depth and total height. Also measure from the bottom of the bin to the underside of its lip; that dimension controls where a supporting runner must sit.

Leave enough clearance for a loaded bin to slide without scraping. The featured project adds a small width allowance and uses a separate gap between bins. Those allowances are practical examples, not universal rules: a different bin shape, warped cabinet or damp environment may require more room.
Example measurements from the featured build
| Measured feature | Example value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bin width | 8 11/16 inches | Starting outside measurement for the container. |
| Added width allowance | 1/16 inch | Combined with the bin width to produce the project’s interior width. |
| Resulting cabinet interior width | 8 3/4 inches | Build-specific inside width; do not assume it fits another cabinet or bin. |
| Runner reference | Bin bottom to underside of lip, plus 1/8 inch | Use the resulting height to position the runner slat. |
| Gap between bins | 3/4 inch | Build-specific separation that leaves room to grasp and move the containers. |
The 8 3/4-inch interior is not a “small vanity standard.” It is simply 8 11/16 inches plus the project’s 1/16-inch allowance. Recalculate if your bins or cabinet differ. Likewise, the 1/8-inch runner addition and 3/4-inch inter-bin gap should be validated with a test fit before you cut a full set of parts.
Plan the pull-out box around the plumbing
Decide whether the box will sit in front of the pipes, straddle them, or occupy one side of the cabinet. A single wide box may need a notch or a shortened rear section; two narrower bins can sometimes pass on either side of a drain. The correct arrangement depends on your measured layout, so draw the cabinet in plan and side view before building.
Allow for the entire travel path
Mark the box’s closed position and its fully pulled position on the cabinet floor. Check both positions against the drain, supply lines, door hinges and face frame. Also check the height of the bin lip while it moves; a lip that clears the pipe at the floor can hit a valve higher up.
Preserve service access
Do not bury shutoff valves, trap connections or inspection points behind permanently attached panels. Keep at least one bin removable without moving the plumbing. If a leak occurs, you should be able to reach the valve and trap immediately.

Build the bin-based cabinet step by step
The exact board thickness and fasteners depend on your materials and the load you expect. The sequence below follows the measured, bin-first method and keeps the critical fits adjustable until the final stage.
- Make a full-size layout. Mark the cabinet opening, the narrowest interior width, the pipe positions and the planned box footprint on cardboard or scrap material. Set the bins on the layout and confirm that the doors can close.
- Set the interior width from the bins. Use the widest part of the bins, add a modest side clearance, and account for the thickness of both box sides. Do not add the clearance twice. If you are using multiple bins, include the intended gap between them.
- Set the depth from the obstruction. Measure to the nearest pipe or rear wall and subtract enough space for the box to travel without rubbing. A shallower box that moves freely is more useful than a deep box that cannot open.
- Cut and assemble the box. Keep the interior square so the runners remain parallel. Assemble the sides, bottom and any rear piece that your plumbing layout permits. If a pipe occupies the rear corner, shape the box around the measured obstruction rather than guessing a notch.
- Mark runner height from the bin lip. Measure from the bottom of the bin to the underside of its lip, add the project’s example 1/8-inch allowance only if your test fit supports it, and mark that height on both sides. Transfer the marks carefully so the runners are level.
- Install the runner slats. Attach the slats at the marks and verify that the bin lip rests on them without lifting the container high enough to hit the sink or plumbing. Use a scrap test piece or one bin before fixing every runner.
- Test the bin gap. Place all bins in the box. Confirm the example 3/4-inch gap—or your revised gap—lets you grasp each bin and does not waste the opening needed for the plumbing.
- Dry-fit in the cabinet. Put the unloaded box in its final position, close the doors, and pull it through its complete travel. Correct interference now, before loading or finishing.
- Secure the unit only after the fit is proven. Once the box moves freely and plumbing access is preserved, attach it using a method suited to your cabinet and floor. Recheck that fasteners do not penetrate into a pipe or wall.
Dry-fit, load and test the storage
Load the bins with the items they will actually carry. Weight can expose a runner that seemed level when empty. Pull each bin out slowly, then open and close both cabinet doors. Listen for scraping and watch for the box shifting sideways.
- Keep bottles with leak potential in a bin that can be removed quickly.
- Leave clearance around the drain and supply lines rather than packing items against them.
- Store frequently used items in the front bin and reserve the rear or lower-access area for backups.
- Label bins if several containers look alike; labels reduce the need to pull everything forward.
- After the first few uses, inspect the runners and fasteners for movement and retighten only when the cabinet is empty and safe to work in.
Moisture is common beneath a bathroom sink. Use containers that tolerate occasional drips, wipe spills promptly and avoid trapping a wet cloth against the cabinet floor. The pull-out should improve access, not conceal a leak.
Compare the practical options
A custom bin box is not the only solution. Your choice depends on whether measuring and fabrication, purchasing a fitted pull-out, or changing the plumbing is the least disruptive path.

| Option | Best suited to | What must be checked | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY bin-based drawer or cabinet | Someone willing to measure and build a custom fit around existing pipes. | Bin dimensions, opening width, usable depth, runner height, travel path and materials or tools on hand. | Source material does not establish a universal cost, durability rating or installation time. |
| Made-to-fit sink caddy pull-out | Someone who wants a purchased pull-out rather than fabricating a box. | Clear opening width, unit depth, drain-pipe and obstacle clearance, and the seller’s installation requirements. | No controlled comparison of price, durability or installation time is established. |
| Space-saving drain kit | A cabinet where the plumbing arrangement is the primary limitation and a plumbing assessment is acceptable. | Bathroom-specific kit configuration, existing drain layout, sink compatibility and installation requirements. | It is not a routine storage accessory; compatibility and the space gained depend on the specific installation. |
When a purchased pull-out caddy makes sense
A made-to-fit sink caddy can save fabrication time, but “made to fit” still means your opening and obstacles must be measured. The seller’s small sink-caddy guidance calls for checking clearance around the drain pipe and other obstructions. Compare the product’s published width and depth with the narrowest opening, then verify that the caddy can travel past your actual pipe layout.

Do not assume a caddy designed for one cabinet style will clear another cabinet’s face frame or hinges. If the unit cannot be removed without disconnecting plumbing, reconsider the placement or keep one section of the cabinet open for service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a space-saving drain kit is worth investigating
Oatey describes a space-saving drain arrangement with a rear-positioned P-trap intended to create room for drawers and bins. That description does not establish that every bathroom sink, trap arm or cabinet can use the same configuration. The page also distinguishes features used on kitchen kits from bathroom kits, so do not transfer kitchen specifications to a bathroom installation.
Treat a plumbing change as a separate project. Confirm the exact bathroom kit, sink and drain configuration, local code requirements and whether the gained space solves your measured obstruction. If you are not qualified to alter the drain, have a licensed professional evaluate it before removing existing plumbing.

The bin will not slide in
Measure the widest point again, including the lip. Check whether the box is narrower at the rear or whether a runner is tilted inward. Remove material only after identifying the actual interference; widening the front while leaving a rear pinch point will not solve the problem.
The bin rocks or falls off the runner
Confirm that both runner slats are at the same height and that the lip rests fully on each one. A larger gap is not a substitute for level supports. Reposition the slats from the bin’s measured lip dimension rather than from the cabinet floor alone.

The box stops halfway out
Inspect the full travel path for a drain, shutoff valve, hinge or face-frame edge. Mark the contact point, then shorten or reshape the box only if doing so preserves bin support and plumbing access.
The doors will not close
Check the clear opening, not the cabinet’s internal width. The box may fit behind the face frame but still project into a hinge or door bumper. Reduce the outside width or change the bin arrangement while retaining enough interior clearance for movement.

Remove or rearrange the bin nearest the shutoffs. If access requires dismantling the storage unit, redesign the layout before securing it permanently. Storage should never delay shutting off water during a leak.
Maintenance and future changes
Because the box is based on removable bins, you can change the contents without rebuilding the cabinet. Re-measure before replacing bins; a new lip profile can require a different runner height even when the width appears identical. Keep the original measurements and a simple sketch inside the cabinet door or with your household maintenance records.
Periodically remove the bins, wipe the cabinet floor and inspect for swelling, loose fasteners or evidence of a slow leak. Correct the plumbing problem before returning the storage. A pull-out makes the cabinet easier to inspect, which is one of its practical advantages over a fixed shelf.
The decision in one sentence
Build the DIY version when your cabinet is unusually tight or obstructed and you can measure and fabricate accurately; choose a purchased caddy when its stated opening and pipe clearances match your cabinet; investigate a space-saving drain kit only when a qualified plumbing assessment confirms that the change is compatible and worthwhile.
