You can turn a 3D game character into a plush, but an OBJ file is not a sewing pattern: you must decide where the fabric pieces will join, flatten those pieces, and test the printed pattern before cutting fabric. A practical route uses Blender to define seams and UV shells, then Patternfy to generate a pattern image; Plushify is a dedicated alternative that guides you from model import to printable pattern.
What you need to turn a 3D model into a plush
The process has two parts: preparing a sewable pattern from a digital mesh, then constructing the plush from fabric. The pattern work determines how a three-dimensional shape is divided into pieces; the sewing work brings those pieces back together around stuffing.
- Model and pattern tools: a character model in OBJ format, its texture if available, Blender or another 3D modeling program, and either Patternfy or Plushify. The Make: tutorial also names image-editing software for cleaning and rescaling the pattern.
- Fabric and filling: custom-printed fabric and polyester fiberfill. Make: names one bag of Fairfield Poly-Fil Premium Polyester Fiber in its materials list.
- Sewing tools: needle and thread, or a sewing machine, plus scissors or another suitable fabric-cutting tool.
For its example, the Make: project used Basic Combed Cotton from Spoonflower and noted DPI and Fabric On Demand as similar vendors. These are examples in that tutorial, not a current recommendation or a guarantee that a particular fabric will suit every design. The tutorial’s materials list also includes optional UVLayout and a software stack of Python 2.7, PIL, and NumPy for Patternfy. Because those are the tutorial’s listed dependencies, check current compatibility and availability before building a workflow around them.

How to make a plush pattern from an OBJ
A mesh describes a surface in three dimensions. A sewing pattern needs that surface divided into pieces that can lie flat. In Blender, the key decision is therefore not simply how to unwrap the model, but where the seams should run on the finished plush. Each seam becomes a boundary between fabric pieces.
- Acquire a model and texture. Start with a character model in OBJ format and its PNG texture, if available. Confirm that you have permission to use the model and texture for your intended purpose; rights are discussed below.
- Inspect the shape before placing seams. Look for broad surfaces that can become manageable fabric pieces, narrow protrusions that may be difficult to turn and stuff, and areas where a seam would interrupt a recognizable contour. A model that looks simple on screen can still produce awkward, tiny pieces when flattened.
- Create a new UV set in Blender. Mark the mesh boundaries where you want the plush seams, then unwrap the model so each fabric section becomes a separate, flattened UV shell. The shells should preserve useful contours without creating unnecessary small pieces. Arrange them so they do not overlap when scaled and exported. The seam layout is a construction plan: it affects the plush’s shape, piece count, sewing access, and difficulty.
- Export the modified model and generate the pattern. The Make: workflow supplies Patternfy with three files: the original OBJ, the original texture, and the modified OBJ containing the new UV layout. Patternfy turns these into a sewing-pattern image. If using Plushify instead, its guide describes importing a model, specifying seams, and printing the resulting pattern.
- Clean up and scale the pattern. Use image-editing software to make the pattern usable for printing. Check the intended finished dimensions and piece arrangement. Print a test copy and verify the scale before ordering fabric; a pattern that has been inadvertently resized can change both the fit of adjoining edges and the final plush size.
- Order and cut the fabric. Once the test print is correct, use the pattern to order custom-printed fabric if you want the character’s texture or colors on the plush. The Make: tutorial’s example ordered one yard of fabric, but the quantity needed depends on the pattern layout and fabric width. Its instructions cut around the pattern pieces with approximately a 1/2-inch border as a seam allowance.
- Sew, turn, stuff, and close. Place the printed faces together and sew along the intended seam lines, leaving an opening for turning and stuffing. Turn the sewn shell right-side out, fill it with polyester fiberfill, then sew the opening closed.
Choose seams for a shape you can actually sew
More seams can help preserve a character’s three-dimensional contours, but every added seam creates more pieces and more sewing. Fewer seams simplify construction but may force a complex form into broad, less natural panels. The right balance depends on the model, the scale at which you will print it, whether you can reach and sew each seam, and your sewing experience.

Make: specifically warns that characters with long, thin, wiry features are harder to sew. Consider simplifying or enlarging such features rather than reproducing every narrow part of the digital model. Small tubes and pointed extensions can be difficult to turn right-side out and fill evenly. A test print helps you assess piece size and layout, but it cannot guarantee that a difficult shape will sew cleanly.
Blender and Patternfy or Plushify?
Both approaches are intended to turn a 3D model into printable pattern pieces, but they offer different levels of manual control. The Make: project describes a Blender-and-Patternfy workflow; Plushify’s own site presents a dedicated model-to-pattern workflow with a guide for importing a model, specifying seams, and printing.

Choose Blender and Patternfy if you want to place seams and arrange UV shells yourself and are comfortable with the setup. Consider Plushify if you prefer a dedicated guided pattern workflow. Neither route removes the need to assess whether the source model may legally be used for a physical plush.

A game character’s recognizable appearance, extracted mesh, texture, logo, or decorative art may be protected even when the general idea of a game or character is not. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that a game’s idea and title are not protected by copyright, while expressive literary or pictorial elements may be. Its examples of visual works include dolls, toys, models, fabric designs, needlework, and sewing patterns. That distinction matters: making a plush changes the medium, but does not necessarily remove rights in the character artwork being reproduced.

The UK Intellectual Property Office says a two-dimensional sewing pattern is not protected as such, while decorative images or other artistic works reproduced through sewing may still create infringement risk. It advises asking the copyright owner for permission or seeking legal advice when uncertain. Nintendo’s official FAQ describes copyright as a creator’s exclusive right to reproduce, make derivative copies, access, display, perform, transmit, or distribute a work, and identifies Nintendo trademarks. These sources illustrate why an extracted game asset should not be assumed free to use.
