Kristi Linauer finished the walnut storage cabinet built to fit between her bathroom vanities in the third and final installment of the project, published September 6, 2022. The last work was concentrated on appearance: walnut veneer wrapped the top and exposed front edges, a mitered walnut base trim completed the lower section, and Rubio Monocoat was applied after final sanding and cleaning. The cabinet was complete even though the second vanity she had hoped to finish alongside it still needed work.

What this finished bathroom cabinet project includes
This is a record of one cabinet build rather than a universal cabinet plan or a finish-performance test. The cabinet was designed for the space between two bathroom vanities, and the final post documents how the visible plywood and lower edge were given a walnut appearance before finishing.
| Area | Material or product | Work recorded in the finished-project post |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet top | Walnut veneer | Applied before finishing, with the grain arranged to suit the visible surfaces |
| Exposed front edges | Walnut veneer | Applied with horizontal grain to coordinate with the cabinet face |
| Lower trim | 1 × 4 walnut lumber, actual size 3/4 × 4 inches | Mitered at the corners and fastened with 1.5-inch 18-gauge nails |
| Nail-hole repairs | Walnut wood filler | Used over the trim nails, then sanded until the repairs disappeared |
| Final surface preparation | 120-grit sandpaper and mineral spirits | Top and lower trim were sanded, cleaned, and allowed to dry completely |
| Finish | Rubio Monocoat | Applied after the prepared surfaces were dry; the exact formulation is not identified |
The combination is important. Veneer changes the appearance of the sheet material, solid walnut establishes the lower trim, filler hides the fasteners, and the finish unifies the exposed wood. The post does not claim that this combination is the best construction for every bathroom, nor does it report an independent moisture-resistance test.
How the three-part project reached its final installment
Part 1: building the cabinet carcass
The first installment covered construction of the cabinet carcass. Its defining constraint was the opening between the bathroom vanities, so the cabinet was made for that specific location rather than as a generic freestanding chest. That context explains why the final post concentrates on the surfaces that would remain visible once the piece occupied the room.
Part 2: completing the drawers
The second installment dealt with the drawer fronts, attaching those fronts to their drawer boxes, and installing the drawer pulls. By the time of the finished-project post, the functional drawer work had already been handled. Part 3 therefore deals with the exterior details that make the assembled cabinet read as a finished walnut piece.
Part 3: the visible finishing work
Linauer had expected the cabinet to take less time and had hoped to complete it together with a second vanity. The cabinet ultimately reached completion first. That timing is part of the project account: “finished” refers to this storage cabinet, not to every bathroom project happening at the same time.
Applying walnut veneer to the top and exposed edges
Which surfaces received veneer
Before the final finish, Linauer covered the cabinet top and the exposed front edges with walnut veneer. The goal was visual continuity. Instead of leaving the plywood construction visible at the top and along the edges, the veneer supplied a walnut surface that could be sanded and finished with the rest of the exposed wood.

She describes this as the closest she could get to making plywood look like a solid piece of walnut lumber. That wording identifies the design intent without claiming that veneer and solid lumber are structurally interchangeable. The veneer is a surface layer; the lower trim, by contrast, is made from solid 1 × 4 walnut stock.
Why the grain direction changes
The side veneer grain runs vertically, while the front-edge grain runs horizontally. This deliberate change follows the direction of each visible part rather than forcing one orientation across the whole cabinet. On the sides, the vertical lines reinforce the cabinet’s upright form. Across the front edge, the horizontal lines follow the width of the cabinet and relate to the drawer fronts.
Grain direction is one of the details that separates a considered veneer job from a quick surface covering. The finished post records the orientation used on this cabinet; it does not present that arrangement as a rule for every design. A different cabinet, edge profile, or grain match could call for another layout.
Where the detailed veneer instructions are
The finished-project article points readers to a separate post for more detail on applying veneer with contact cement. That cross-reference matters because the final installment records the completed surfaces, not a full adhesive tutorial. Anyone reproducing the work should consult the author’s dedicated veneer instructions for the contact-cement application sequence rather than treating this summary as a substitute for them.
Making the mitered walnut base trim
Stock dimensions
For the lower trim, Linauer used nominal 1 × 4 walnut lumber. Its actual dimensions are 3/4 inch thick by 4 inches wide. Stating the actual size is useful when planning the finished height and the relationship between the trim and the cabinet body; nominal lumber labels do not describe the material’s final measurements.
Mitering the corners
The trim pieces were cut with mitered corners so the adjoining sections meet at angled joints rather than presenting end grain at the front corners. The post documents the mitered construction as part of the cabinet’s finished appearance. It does not provide a separate cutting diagram or a universal angle-setting procedure, so the dimensions must be taken from the particular cabinet opening and the trim layout being built.

Fastening with 18-gauge nails
Linauer attached the trim with 1.5-inch, 18-gauge nails. Those details identify both the fastener length and gauge used on this project. They should not be read as a blanket specification for every trim thickness or substrate: the appropriate fastener depends on the actual materials and the location of the trim.
Hiding the nail holes
After fastening, she filled the nail holes with walnut wood filler. Once the filler had dried, she sanded the repairs until they disappeared. Matching the filler to the walnut helps the filled spots recede when the surface is finished, while sanding removes the raised or excess material that would otherwise remain visible under the finish.
Preparing the wood for Rubio Monocoat
Final sanding
With the veneer and lower trim assembled, Linauer quickly sanded the top and the lower trim using 120-grit sandpaper. The post does not describe a long progression through multiple grits; 120 grit is the specific final-preparation grade she reports for these surfaces.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBecause the cabinet combines veneer, solid walnut, and filled nail holes, the sanding step brings those different areas to a consistent surface before finish is applied. The account records the grit and the areas sanded, but it does not establish a general sanding schedule for other woods, veneer thicknesses, or products.
Cleaning with mineral spirits
After sanding, she cleaned the top and lower trim with mineral spirits. The surfaces were then left to dry completely. That drying interval is part of the sequence: the finish was not applied immediately over wet solvent or sanding residue.
Mineral spirits, drying time, ventilation, and disposal should be handled according to the product labels and local requirements. The project account identifies what was used; it does not supply a safety procedure or substitute for the instructions on the specific solvent container.

Applying Rubio Monocoat
Once the top and lower trim had been sanded, cleaned, and allowed to dry, Linauer applied Rubio Monocoat. The finished-project post names the product family but does not identify the exact formulation used on this cabinet. It is therefore more accurate to call it Rubio Monocoat than to assign a particular variant that the account does not confirm.

Nothing in this project account establishes a measured moisture rating, a laboratory result, or a guarantee for bathroom exposure. The cabinet’s location explains the choice of subject, but the post is a maker’s build narrative, not a comparative test of bathroom finishes. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact product you have, and do not infer performance beyond what those instructions and the project record support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The documented build sequence
Read as a practical order of operations, the final installment describes this sequence:
- Build the cabinet carcass to fit between the bathroom vanities, as described in Part 1.
- Complete the drawer fronts, attach them to the drawer boxes, and install the pulls, as described in Part 2.
- Apply walnut veneer to the cabinet top and exposed front edges. Keep the side grain vertical and the front-edge grain horizontal, matching the arrangement used on this cabinet.
- Cut and assemble the lower trim from nominal 1 × 4 walnut lumber, whose actual size is 3/4 × 4 inches, using mitered corners.
- Fasten the trim with 1.5-inch 18-gauge nails.
- Fill the nail holes with walnut wood filler and sand the filled areas until the repairs disappear.
- Quickly sand the top and lower trim with 120-grit paper.
- Clean those surfaces with mineral spirits and wait until they are completely dry.
- Apply Rubio Monocoat, using the detailed instructions for the exact formulation selected.
This ordering keeps the cosmetic work ahead of the finish. Veneer, trim, filler, and sanding are complete before the final coat is introduced, so the finish is applied to the assembled visible surfaces rather than interrupting the construction sequence.

Planning a similar cabinet without losing the project’s intent
Measure the opening before choosing the trim
This cabinet was built for a defined gap between vanities. A reproduction should begin with that opening and the desired clearances, then size the carcass and trim around those constraints. The 3/4-inch thickness and 4-inch width of the walnut stock are facts from this build, not dimensions that automatically fit another room.
Decide where the grain should lead the eye
Use the documented arrangement as a design reference: vertical grain on the sides and horizontal grain on the front edges. Mark those directions before cutting veneer so the pieces are not accidentally installed with the visual emphasis reversed.
Keep veneer and solid trim distinct in the plan
The top and exposed edges receive a walnut surface layer, while the lower base is made from solid walnut lumber. Treat those as separate material decisions when planning thickness, joints, fasteners, and sanding. The account’s “solid walnut” visual goal comes from combining them carefully, not from claiming that every part is solid wood.
Reserve the finish until repairs are invisible
Nail holes were filled and sanded before the 120-grit preparation, solvent cleaning, drying period, and finish application. Inspect the miter joints, veneer edges, and filled holes under the light in the room where the cabinet will be installed. If a repair remains visible before finishing, Rubio Monocoat will not turn the construction step into a different joint.
Verify the finish instructions for the exact product
Because the formulation is not identified in the project post, identify the product variant on your own container and use its current instructions. The author’s separate Rubio Monocoat guidance can provide additional context, but the label and manufacturer directions govern the material in your workshop.
Final status of the bathroom storage cabinet
By September 6, 2022, the cabinet itself was finished: the drawers and pulls from Part 2 were in place, the top and exposed edges had walnut veneer, the lower trim had mitered walnut corners with concealed nail holes, and the prepared surfaces had received Rubio Monocoat. The companion vanity remained unfinished, which is why this installment closes one piece of the bathroom work without claiming that the entire room project was complete.
