Yes, a DMF fold-up system may be suitable for an opening wider than 10 metres, but the public information does not establish a standard maximum width or prove a completed 10-metre-plus installation. DMF’s RL3000-FOLD HGR is the closest listed fit: it is marketed for giant aircraft hangars, described as having no stated size restriction, and offered with engineered reinforcement for openings above 300 m². A project enquiry must still confirm the clear width and height, wind exposure, support steel, folding geometry, safety equipment and operating duty for the particular building.
The strongest published size example is a 9.5 m-wide by 6 m-high Aluflex installation in Queensland. That project is close to, but not over, 10 metres. DMF’s 2020 specifier guidance discusses fold-up doors exceeding 20 m high by 35 m wide at category level, yet that statement is not a current, model-specific guarantee for the HGR variant.

What DMF system is intended for a very wide opening?
RL3000-FOLD HGR: the most relevant option
The RL3000-FOLD uses a flexible PVC curtain that rises from the bottom and folds at the head in a Roman-blind-like arrangement. DMF lists three configurations:
| Variant | Published application | Published size or performance information |
|---|---|---|
| RL3000-FOLD LTE | Light industrial applications | Up to 120 m² |
| RL3000-FOLD FLX | Medium hangar doors | Up to 120 m² |
| RL3000-FOLD HGR | Giant aircraft hangar doors | “UNLIMITED” size restrictions; 0.2 m/s operating speed; wind resistance stated up to 230 km/h |
The HGR wording should be treated as a design-service statement, not as permission to assume any width, wind rating or structure will work. DMF’s page does not publish a maximum width, test conditions, allowable pressure, curtain weight, folding-stack dimensions or a guaranteed rating for a named opening. It does refer to engineered solutions above 300 m² and custom wind-beam reinforcement. For an opening over 10 metres, ask DMF to issue a project-specific arrangement drawing and structural design basis.

Why a fold-up curtain can suit oversized doors
A folding curtain avoids the large horizontal roll barrel required by a rapid-roll door and can cover a tall hangar entrance without a conventional swinging leaf. The head assembly, wind beams, side guides and building connections become critical as the span grows. The curtain may be divided into panels, with intermediate beams or supports controlling movement and wind loads. The actual arrangement depends on clear opening dimensions, available headroom and the engineer’s load path into the building.
Can it span more than 10 metres?
There is no published HGR maximum width to quote. The accurate answer is therefore “potentially, subject to custom engineering,” rather than “yes, up to a stated width.” Three pieces of evidence explain why:
- DMF positions the HGR for giant aircraft hangars and says it has no size restriction, while also describing engineered solutions for openings over 300 m².
- DMF’s Aluflex case study documents a 9,500 mm-wide opening, not one wider than 10,000 mm.
- A 2020 DMF whitepaper says new fold-up designs can accommodate hangar, mining and shipyard doorways exceeding 20 m high by 35 m wide. That is broad category guidance, not a current HGR certificate or project record.
For procurement, treat 10 metres as the point at which a normal catalogue assumption stops being reliable. Provide the exact opening and request written confirmation of the proposed width, height, wind design, support reactions, operating speed and inspection requirements.

What the 9.5-metre Aluflex project demonstrates
DMF reports supplying four Aluflex fold-up doors at a recycling plant in Hemmant, Queensland. Each opening was 6,000 mm high by 9,500 mm wide, with a stated requirement to withstand 200 km/h wind force. The doors used 400 mm-thick wind beams separating a dual-panel structure. DMF and the client used 3D modelling to finalise the structural mounting design, and the reported door speed was 0.25 m/s.
This case is useful because it shows the coordination needed near a 10-metre span: panel division, deep wind beams, building attachments and digital modelling were resolved together. It does not establish that the same construction, speed or 200 km/h criterion applies to an HGR door at another site. Wind speed, terrain, exposure category, building flexibility and local codes must be assessed for each project.
How the EFAFLEX F-Series compares
DMF lists the EFAFLEX F-Series as a high-speed folding door for industrial facilities, fire stations and rail applications. Its published standard dimensions are up to 8,000 mm wide by 6,000 mm high, with opening speed up to 2.5 m/s and capacity up to 200,000 operating cycles per year.

| Decision factor | RL3000-FOLD HGR | EFAFLEX F-Series |
|---|---|---|
| Published role | Giant aircraft hangar openings | Industrial, fire-station and rail facilities |
| Published standard width | Not stated | Up to 8,000 mm |
| Published standard height | Not stated | Up to 6,000 mm |
| Operating/opening speed | 0.2 m/s listed for HGR | Up to 2.5 m/s |
| Operating duty | Not stated | Up to 200,000 cycles per year |
| Evidence for a 10 m-plus opening | No model-specific maximum published | Published standard width is below 10 m; custom suitability not stated |
These figures are not a laboratory comparison. They refer to different products, applications and published conditions. The F-Series may be attractive where rapid traffic turnover and frequent cycles dominate, but its stated standard width is below the requested use case. Do not specify it for a 10-metre-plus opening without written confirmation of a custom design.
Information to collect before requesting a quotation
1. Record the opening and the available space
- Measure the finished clear width and height at several points, not just the architectural nominal size.
- Record headroom above the opening, side room at both jambs and the depth available for folded curtain, wind beams, motors and controls.
- Identify columns, trusses, crane rails, services, sprinklers and cladding that could interfere with the stack or maintenance access.
- State whether the dimension is a single clear opening or a larger façade that could be divided into multiple doors.
DMF’s specifier guidance stresses that dimensions and clearances must be resolved before manufacture. A few hundred millimetres lost to structure can change the door arrangement or require a separate support frame.
2. Define wind and structural requirements
Give the project location, exposure, building height, terrain, internal pressure assumptions and the design wind standard required by the engineer. Ask for curtain pressure, wind-beam spacing, jamb reactions, head reactions and anchorage loads, not merely a headline wind speed. The 200 km/h value in the Aluflex account belongs to that project; the HGR page’s up-to-230-km/h statement does not automatically apply to your site.

Describe vehicles, aircraft, forklifts, pedestrians and the number of movements per hour. A 0.2 m/s HGR listing and the 0.25 m/s Aluflex project speed are appropriate reference points for a large fold-up arrangement, but they are not promises for every size. If the door must clear traffic in seconds, quantify the required full-open and full-close times and ask whether a faster product or a divided opening is more practical.
Estimate annual cycles, including seasonal peaks and testing. The F-Series figure of up to 200,000 cycles per year is specific to that product page; it should not be transferred to the HGR.

4. Define the environmental job
Explain whether the door’s main purpose is weather exclusion, dust control, temperature separation, security, pressure management or simply rapid traffic access. Select curtain material, vision panels, seals, drainage and controls for the actual environment. Recycling, mining and marine sites may require different abrasion, corrosion and cleaning provisions than an aircraft hangar.
5. Specify activation and safety
List every approach route and identify the safe state if power or communications fail. DMF project material describes combinations of in-column light beams, pressure-sensitive bottom rails, infrared motion detection and induction floor loops. These are project-specific options, not a universal package. The designer should coordinate detection zones with vehicle speeds, pedestrian crossings and adjacent doors.
When should a wide opening be divided?
A single very wide curtain is not always the best traffic solution. Division can reduce the open area, shorten exposure time and provide redundancy. DMF describes a pharmaceutical warehouse in which two Series RL3000 rapid-roll doors divided a 10 m opening into inbound and outbound routes. Induction floor loops, photoelectric safety beams and custom central supports were used.
That example is not a fold-up door and does not prove a 10-metre-plus fold-up installation. It does show a useful design alternative: if traffic naturally separates into lanes, two narrower doors may simplify control, improve throughput and reduce the structural span of each curtain. Compare that option against the cost of a central support, lost clear width, vehicle turning paths and maintenance access.
A practical specification and approval sequence
- Prepare a dimensioned survey. Include clear opening, headroom, jamb room, floor level, structure, services and maintenance zones.
- Issue the operating brief. State traffic types, activation method, required open time, annual cycles, environmental conditions and security expectations.
- Request a concept layout from DMF. Ask whether RL3000-FOLD HGR, another fold-up configuration or divided doors best fit the opening.
- Obtain the engineering basis. Require design wind pressure, support reactions, wind-beam arrangement, deflection limits, anchorage details and any new steelwork.
- Check compliance and interfaces. Coordinate electrical supply, emergency release, guarding, fire strategy, drainage, access control and building-code requirements with the relevant professionals.
- Review a coordinated drawing. Confirm that folded curtain, controls, sensors and maintenance access do not conflict with cranes, lights, sprinklers or vehicles.
- Approve commissioning criteria. Record opening and closing times, sensor response, safety-edge reversal, wind operating limits, manual recovery and inspection intervals.
Common specification mistakes
- Assuming “unlimited” means unlimited in every condition. It does not replace a structural calculation or a written project acceptance.
- Using the 35 m figure as an HGR rating. The 20 m-high by 35 m-wide wording comes from a 2020 category-level whitepaper.
- Calling the Aluflex project over 10 metres. Its reported width is 9.5 m.
- Comparing speeds without considering size. The 2.5 m/s F-Series figure, 0.25 m/s Aluflex figure and 0.2 m/s HGR listing describe different products and contexts.
- Leaving structure until after the purchase order. Wind beams, central supports and anchorage can determine whether the proposed clear opening is achievable.
- Ordering generic sensors separately. Light curtains, loops and photoelectric beams must be selected and integrated with the door’s controls and safety circuit by the door designer.
What to ask DMF in the project enquiry
- Can the proposed HGR arrangement provide the exact clear width and height, and what is the maximum folded-stack depth?
- What wind pressure and operating wind limit will be used for this site?
- What reactions and deflections must the supporting steel resist?
- Will the curtain be single-panel or dual-panel, and where are wind beams or intermediate supports required?
- What full-open time, cycle rating and maintenance schedule apply to the quoted configuration?
- Which activation, presence-sensing, bottom-edge and emergency-release devices are included?
- What happens during power loss, high wind, impact or sensor failure?
- Can the opening be divided into two doors, and how would that change cost, throughput and structural work?
Until those answers are documented, the responsible specification is “custom design for a very large opening,” not a fixed promise that a particular standard door covers every span above 10 metres.
