Carbondale designed Dolce&Gabbana’s Venice store as a sequence of rooms that behaves less like a conventional shop than a compact Venetian interior journey. Set across two floors of a former bank near Piazza San Marco, the project uses canals, palazzo rooms, reflected light, lagoon colors, historic materials, and local craft to make the setting part of the luxury experience.
What is Dolce&Gabbana by Carbondale?
Dolce&Gabbana by Carbondale is a retail interior designed for the Italian fashion house by the Paris-based architecture and design practice Carbondale. Architectural Record’s September 1, 2017 report credits Eric Carlson as principal and describes the project as a context-led response to Venice rather than a generic branded fit-out.

The store occupies about 8,000 square feet over two floors of a former bank on Calle Larga XXII Marzo, close to Piazza San Marco. The older, street-facing portion of the building contains restored rooms; newer interiors continue behind them. The arrangement lets the project move between inherited architecture and newly made spaces without pretending that every room belongs to the same historical moment.
Carbondale’s founder, Eric Carlson, explained the ambition this way: “Venice is not a shopping destination, like Paris or Milan. It’s a cultural destination, and the idea was: make somewhere visitors put on their list of things to see.” The statement clarifies why the design spends so much effort on atmosphere, sequence, and material detail. It is intended to be a destination within a destination, not simply a container for merchandise.

Where is the Venice store?
The project is on Calle Larga XXII Marzo near Piazza San Marco, in the historic center of Venice. The reported address matters architecturally: this is a dense, walkable urban fabric of palazzi, narrow routes, water reflections, and highly layered interiors. The store’s design responds to those conditions inside, but the 2017 report does not establish current opening hours, present-day visitor rules, or whether every part of the project remains accessible.
The source also does not provide a confirmed completion date, construction budget, visitor-count data, energy figures, or post-occupancy measurements. Descriptions of the upper-floor couture rooms as invitation-only belong to the 2017 account and should be treated as historical reporting rather than a statement of current policy.

The welcome room in the former banking hall
Arrival takes place in the former banking hall, called the “welcome room.” Its restored coffered wooden ceiling includes inlaid marquetry, while a polychromatic marble floor anchors the room underfoot. Modern furnishings are deliberately restrained, allowing the existing architectural surfaces to establish the first impression.
This is an important choice in a luxury interior. Instead of beginning with a loud logo or a single theatrical object, the store begins with proportion, craftsmanship, and the sense that the visitor has entered a significant existing room. The welcome room acts as an orientation point before the plan narrows and becomes more directional.
The canal room as the central route
From the welcome room, visitors enter the narrow “canal room,” the project’s principal circulation device. Architectural Record gives it dimensions of 65 feet long and 15 feet high. It connects the welcome room to the jewelry room, while clothing and shoe displays open from its sides.

The name is not merely decorative. A Venetian canal is a route through the city, a linear space that reveals different façades and destinations as someone moves along it. In the store, the canal room performs a similar job: it creates a clear spine, then lets adjacent retail rooms appear as lateral discoveries. The plan can therefore guide movement without forcing every display into one large, undifferentiated sales floor.

At the end of this route, the jewelry room intensifies the project’s reflective language. Its walls are covered in deep-blue glass mosaic inset with 24-carat-gold stars. A black-marble mosaic floor and mirrored ceiling extend the sense of depth and sparkle.
The room is a carefully controlled composition of dark surfaces, gold points, and reflected images. Rather than treating jewelry as an isolated display case problem, the design gives it a complete atmospheric setting. The blue mosaic recalls evening water and the lagoon, while the stars provide a concentrated metallic counterpoint. The mirrored ceiling multiplies the room’s surfaces and movement, making the visitor part of the visual field.
How the interiors reflect Venice
Reflected façades and lagoon light
Gold-leaf mosaic and marble appear in ways that the project associates with light bouncing from Venetian façades and water. These materials are not used only for richness; they are selected for how they catch, return, and soften illumination. The result is a retail environment in which changing reflections help create movement even when the architecture itself is fixed.
Elsewhere, stone and textiles draw on lagoon colors. Lacquered wood recalls the painted surfaces and practical craft of water taxis. Venetian chandeliers and fixtures bring the city’s glass and lighting traditions into the store. Together, these references avoid a literal stage set. They work through color, sheen, texture, and assembly rather than through an accumulation of souvenirs.

Room-by-room color coding
Different retail departments receive distinct finishes so that visitors can read the plan intuitively. The women’s ready-to-wear area is described with a blood-red mirrored ceiling and pinkish marble. Menswear uses blue-tinted mirror with green marble. Those choices separate the departments while preserving the project’s overall interest in water, reflection, and polished mineral surfaces.
The color shifts also change the emotional temperature of the journey. Red and pink create a warmer, more saturated setting; blue and green move toward the cooler palette of the lagoon. Because the finishes are architectural rather than temporary graphics, the departments remain legible as rooms with their own identities.
Comfort as part of the display strategy
Bespoke silk-velvet chairs are distributed throughout the store. The report links this decision to the time shoppers spend on their feet. Seating is therefore treated as part of hospitality and circulation, not as an afterthought added only to dressing rooms.
This practical detail supports Carlson’s description of the customer experience: “It’s about how people move through the spaces and how we take care of them. When they try on clothes in front of the mirror, how do we make them feel beautiful?” The question connects ergonomics, lighting, mirrors, and service. A beautiful room that exhausts visitors would not fulfill the brief; comfort helps sustain the intended pace of discovery.
What materials and local makers appear in the project?
The store’s material language depends on specialist fabrication as much as on architectural composition. The project specifications credit Venetian and Italian makers for mosaics, glass, furniture, carpet, and textiles.

| Element | Reported treatment or contribution | Credited maker |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome-room ceiling | Restored coffered wood with inlaid marquetry | Existing building fabric |
| Welcome-room floor | Polychromatic marble | Project specification does not assign a maker |
| Wall mosaics | Gold-leaf and colored mosaic work, including the blue jewelry-room walls | Friul Mosaic and Orsoni |
| Jewelry-room stars | 24-carat gold stars inset into blue glass mosaic | Project report credits the mosaic work; it does not separate star fabrication |
| Glass furnishings | Venetian glass pieces and fixtures | Seguso |
| Furniture | Bespoke and loose furniture, including seating used throughout the store | Battaglia |
| Carpet | Carpet elements used across the retail interiors | PBH |
| Textiles | Textile finishes that reinforce lagoon-related colors and tactility | Bevilacqua and Rubelli |
The list demonstrates a broader design principle: local identity is carried by production networks, not only by visual motifs. A mosaic made by a specialist workshop or glass produced by a Venetian maker has a different relationship to place than a mass-produced surface printed to look historic.
How lighting and mirrors shape the experience
Mindseye is credited with the lighting design. The report describes a mirror-lighting system using four separate sources to produce a clear reflection without glare. That specification is especially significant in a fashion store, where mirrors must support both accurate viewing and a flattering, calm experience.
Lighting is coordinated with the reflective materials rather than added after them. Marble, glass mosaic, lacquered wood, mirrored ceilings, and tinted mirrors can easily create visual noise or harsh highlights. Separating the light sources allows the designers to control the face, garment, and surrounding room as related but distinct parts of the image. The stated goal is not maximum brightness; it is a useful reflection that preserves the material atmosphere.

The approach also reinforces the canal metaphor. Venetian water is characterized by broken reflections, changing angles, and layered brightness. The store translates that condition into a controlled interior system: light moves across surfaces and supports orientation while preventing the mirrors from becoming visually aggressive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens on the upper floor?
The upper floor contains the formalwear and couture rooms. In the 2017 account, the couture rooms are described as invitation-only. Their position above the main sequence gives the store a graduated hierarchy: public arrival and ready-to-wear areas establish the route, while more private categories occupy a quieter level.

This vertical organization is consistent with the project’s treatment of the former bank. Restored rooms in the older street-facing section provide the historical threshold, the canal room organizes movement through the center, and newer interiors accommodate differentiated retail functions behind and above. The store is therefore experienced as a progression of thresholds rather than as one continuous open plan.
How does this project compare with Carbondale’s Monte Carlo work?
Architectural Digest’s 2017 coverage presents the Venice and Monte Carlo projects as location-specific responses rather than interchangeable versions of one brand interior. Venice is characterized as historically inflected, while Monte Carlo combines contemporary sleekness with Italian baroque references.
The useful comparison is not a claim that one project is more luxurious. It is the way each design translates its setting:
- Historical reference: Venice works through restored rooms, palazzo-like sequencing, Venetian glass, mosaics, and lagoon associations; Monte Carlo is described through a more contemporary and baroque combination.
- Material palette: Venice emphasizes reflective mosaic, marble, lacquered wood, textiles, and glass linked to water and local craft.
- Spatial sequence: Venice uses the canal room as a linear connector between welcome, jewelry, clothing, and shoes.
- Brand and place: In Venice, the fashion house is placed inside a cultural destination, with the architecture designed to make the visit itself memorable.
The available editorial comparison is brief, so it should not be read as a full technical evaluation of the two buildings, budgets, construction methods, or operating performance.
Why the Venice store matters as a retail architecture case study
Carbondale’s Venice project shows how a luxury store can express identity without flattening its location into a theme. The strongest references are structural and sensory: a route that behaves like a canal, rooms that unfold like a palazzo sequence, surfaces that return light like water, and craft commissions tied to Venetian production.
It also demonstrates why restoration and insertion can be more persuasive than total reinvention. The coffered ceiling, marquetry, and polychromatic marble floor establish continuity with the former bank. New rooms then make their own contribution through blue mosaic, mirrored ceilings, colored marble, and specialized lighting. The contrast is intentional: the visitor can recognize what has been inherited and what has been newly composed.
Finally, the project treats care as a design material. Seating, glare control, mirror quality, circulation width, and room hierarchy all affect how long visitors remain and how they feel while trying on clothes. The architecture’s success, as described in the 2017 report, lies in coordinating those practical decisions with a strong sense of place.
