The Double Ninth Festival, also called Chongyang, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In 2026, it falls on October 18. Traditions include climbing, chrysanthemum customs and Chongyang cake, while the day today is also associated with honoring older people.

When is the Double Ninth Festival?

It is observed on the ninth day of the ninth Chinese lunar month, so it does not fall on September 9 of the Gregorian calendar. Its Gregorian date changes each year. The 2026 date is October 18, as indicated by the Hong Kong Observatory’s 2026 almanac, which lists October 19 as the day after Chung Yeung Festival.

Why is it called Chongyang?

“Double Ninth” refers to the repetition of nine: the festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. In traditional Chinese cosmology, nine is associated with yang, one of the two complementary forces. The name reflects that traditional belief, not a scientific classification. The festival is also known as Chongyang, or Chung Yeung in Hong Kong usage.

How did the festival begin?

Cultural histories connect Chongyang with seasonal beliefs and harvest-time offerings, but they do not establish one definitive founding event. A Beijing cultural account traces early references to seasonal and astronomical ideas and to the late-third-century-BCE text Lüshi Chunqiu. Another history recounts a Han-era association between the day and wearing zhuyu, eating cakes and drinking chrysanthemum wine. These are historical accounts of customs and changing meanings, rather than proof of a single origin story.

Climb and enjoy the autumn landscape

Climbing to a high place is a well-known Chongyang custom. Older explanations associate it with avoiding misfortune or seeking protection; that is a traditional belief, not a verified physical effect.

View chrysanthemums and use zhuyu

Chrysanthemums are associated with the season, and accounts describe viewing the flowers and drinking chrysanthemum wine. They also mention zhuyu, a fragrant plant traditionally carried or worn. These plant customs likewise have protective meanings in some traditional explanations.

Eat Chongyang cake

Chongyang cake has no single fixed recipe in the cultural accounts. The cakes take varied forms; one regional example from Taizhou is Puxian nine-level rice crackers. Treat that as a local example, not a description of every Chongyang cake.

Honor ancestors

Some regional accounts include ancestor observances. Taizhou’s account, for example, describes local practices alongside its food customs; observance is not uniform across all communities.

What does the festival mean today?

Alongside its older seasonal and protective customs, Chongyang has a modern association with respect and care for older people. Beijing and Wuhu cultural sources report that China designated the lunar date as an occasion for older people in 1989. This added social meaning sits alongside the festival’s other traditions rather than replacing them.
