Fotoxx is available for Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal) from Ubuntu’s official Universe repository. Install it with sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install fotoxx. The Focal repository package is Fotoxx 19.17-1build1—not the newer 20.08 packages found in later Ubuntu releases. Ubuntu 20.04 reached the end of standard support on May 31, 2025, so upgrade to a supported release first when that is practical.

That combination is Fotoxx’s main distinction. It is not simply a drop-in Photoshop replacement, and its tools are not aimed at every professional compositing or colour-managed workflow.
The Ubuntu documentation also describes versioned saves that preserve the original by default. Keep an independent backup nevertheless, particularly before batch operations.
Install Fotoxx with APT
Standard terminal installation
Use Ubuntu’s repository rather than downloading an unrelated package file:

sudo apt install fotoxxAPT resolves the package’s Ubuntu-compatible dependencies and receives updates through the normal system update mechanism. Ubuntu package details list GTK, Cairo, image-format, TIFF, RAW-related and desktop-integration libraries among the dependencies. See the Focal package details.
If APT cannot find the package
Fotoxx is in Universe. Enable that component, refresh the package index, and retry:

sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fotoxxYou can also enable Universe graphically through Software & Updates → Ubuntu Software. If add-apt-repository is unavailable, use that graphical route.
Launch and verify the installation
Start Fotoxx
fotoxxIt should also appear in the desktop application menu, usually under graphics or photography. Fotoxx accepts an image or folder as a command-line argument:

Check the version and package source
fotoxx -v
apt policy fotoxxThe -v option prints the installed version and exits. apt policy shows the installed version, candidate version, and repository origin. On an un-upgraded Focal system, the Ubuntu package record identifies version 19.17-1build1. Compare release packaging in Launchpad’s Fotoxx history; Jammy lists 20.08-2build1 and Noble lists 20.08-2build5.
Install through Ubuntu Software
- Open Ubuntu Software.
- Search for Fotoxx.
- Select the package supplied by Ubuntu’s repositories.
- Click Install and authenticate.
- Launch Fotoxx from the application menu.
The terminal path is easier to diagnose when a repository or dependency error occurs, so it is the preferred method for troubleshooting.

What you can do in Fotoxx
Correct and edit photographs
For everyday work, Fotoxx provides geometric corrections, crop and resize tools, brightness, contrast, colour, levels and curve adjustments, sharpening, blur, noise reduction, red-eye correction, local-contrast and tone-mapping tools, text, compositing, and selective edits using area selections. Undo and redo are available.

Ubuntu’s Fotoxx documentation describes individual and batch RAW conversion with 8- or 16-bit output per colour channel. Actual compatibility depends on the Focal build, supporting libraries, and your camera model, so test a representative RAW file before committing to a workflow. Photographers wanting a dedicated, non-destructive RAW-development environment may prefer darktable or RawTherapee.
Organize and search a collection
Fotoxx can display adjustable-size thumbnails, navigate folders, create albums, and attach or search metadata such as tags, captions, dates, ratings, locations, and comments. Calendar and map browsing can be useful when a folder hierarchy is no longer enough.
Run batch operations
Batch tools cover tasks such as renaming, resizing, format conversion, and metadata operations. Back up the photo directory, try the action on a small copy, and inspect the output before processing an entire collection.
Remove Fotoxx safely
Remove the application while leaving ordinary user files in place:

sudo apt remove fotoxxTo remove packages that are no longer needed:
sudo apt autoremovepurge also removes package configuration files:
sudo apt purge fotoxxYour photographs are separate from the application package, but identify any catalog or metadata-related data you need before deleting configuration files. Keep backups regardless of which removal command you use.
Update Fotoxx and understand the version gap
Update the Focal package through the normal system process:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgradeThen check the candidate version with apt policy fotoxx. APT cannot turn the Focal package into the package built for another Ubuntu release. Ubuntu’s records show different Fotoxx builds for Focal, Jammy, and Noble. Do not install a Jammy or Noble .deb on Focal merely because its version number is newer: release-specific libraries, dependencies, and ABIs can make it fail or destabilize package management.
Troubleshooting
“Unable to locate package fotoxx”
- Enable Universe and refresh indexes:
sudo add-apt-repository universe sudo apt update apt-cache policy fotoxx - Confirm the operating system:
. /etc/os-release echo "$PRETTY_NAME" - Check that your APT sources are valid and do not mix Focal, Jammy, Noble, Debian, or random PPAs.
Broken or held dependencies
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo dpkg --configure -aRetry the installation after these commands complete. Avoid adding repositories simply to bypass an error unless their ownership and Ubuntu-release compatibility are clear.
Check architecture before any manual package work
dpkg --print-architectureAPT normally selects the correct architecture automatically. Manual downloads require an exact match; a package built for another architecture or Ubuntu release is not a safe substitute.

Fotoxx will not launch
Start it from a terminal to capture diagnostic output:
fotoxxAlso check the installed version with fotoxx -v. An old graphics stack, desktop-session problem, or defect in the older Focal build may be involved.
An image or RAW file will not open
Check the file type, permissions, and whether the file is damaged:

fotoxx -vUnsupported camera RAW formats, missing optional utilities, and library limitations can affect particular files. Ubuntu lists optional integrations such as FFmpeg, Hugin, RawTherapee, VLC, and JPEG 2000 tools for particular functions; installing all of them is not a universal fix. Should you upgrade Ubuntu before installing?
Upgrade first if the computer can be migrated safely. Canonical says Ubuntu 20.04 standard support ended on May 31, 2025 and recommends moving to a newer supported release. The normal LTS upgrade path is sequential, so follow Canonical’s release guidance rather than assuming a direct jump. A supported release gives you a newer repository package and current security maintenance.
If the machine must remain on 20.04, the Focal APT package is still the least risky way to install Fotoxx, but it is an older build on an operating system outside standard support. Ubuntu Pro can provide extended security maintenance for eligible 20.04 systems; that is separate from ordinary support and does not make the Focal Fotoxx package current.

The Bottom Line
Fotoxx installs on Ubuntu 20.04 with sudo apt update && sudo apt install fotoxx, and the Focal repository supplies version 19.17-1build1. Use Ubuntu’s repository, verify with fotoxx -v, back up photos before batch work, and upgrade Ubuntu first whenever possible because 20.04 standard support ended on May 31, 2025.
