For a health-focused Dragon Boat Festival greeting, write 端午安康 (Duānwǔ ānkāng). What does 端午安康 mean?
端午安康 is pronounced Duānwǔ ānkāng. 端午 refers to Duanwu, or the Dragon Boat Festival, and 安康 expresses a wish for peace and good health. The health theme is also reflected in 康 (kāng), meaning good health or staying healthy. A China.org.cn cultural explainer republished by ChineseThought.cn connects the festival with wishes for the health of family and friends. The phrase is a greeting, not a claim that the holiday or the words have medical effects.
How to write a Dragon Boat Festival blessing in Chinese calligraphy
Make the four characters the focal point
Write the characters in this order: 端午安康. Keep the phrase together as one greeting and leave enough open space around it to make the brushwork easy to see. You can place the pronunciation, Duānwǔ ānkāng, and the English meaning below or beside the characters in smaller lettering.

Use traditional calligraphy materials if you have them
Chinese calligraphy traditionally uses a brush, inkstick, paper, and inkstone—the “Four Treasures of a Scholar’s Studio,” as described by the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. These materials are a traditional option, not a requirement for sharing the greeting. A ready-made calligraphy card or print can also carry the phrase.
When is the Dragon Boat Festival?
Duanwu falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so its date on the Gregorian calendar changes from year to year. The festival is associated with customs including dragon boat racing, eating zongzi (glutinous-rice parcels), and hanging wormwood. How the greeting fits the festival’s cultural context
The story of Qu Yuan is a prominent Dragon Boat Festival legend, not an uncontested explanation of the festival’s origins. In that account, people rowed out after Qu Yuan drowned and threw rice into the river; the story is associated with dragon boat racing and zongzi. A Shanghai Municipal Government-hosted explainer published May 30, 2025 describes multiple regional and cultural influences and notes that the festival’s birthplace remains debated. It characterizes the festival as more than 2,000 years old, a broad historical description rather than a precise dating of a single origin.
