Why health and tradition fit the greeting
The festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, so its Gregorian date changes each year. UNESCO describes traditions that include dragon boat races and meals featuring rice dumplings, eggs, and other foods. Customs differ by region, so it is better to mention these as familiar festival traditions rather than assume every recipient celebrates in the same way. UNESCO’s festival document.

Choosing the right wording
- Relationship: Use a more personal line with friends and family; keep workplace and client greetings warm but professional.
- Tone: A short “Best wishes” is straightforward, while a sentence about peace, joy, or well-being feels more personal.
- Language: If you plan to write in Chinese or use romanization, confirm the preferred script and language variety with the recipient. One source identifies 端午节 (Duanwu Jie) as a festival name and renders a health-focused wish as “Safe and Healthy Dragon Boat Festival,” but it does not establish that wording as universal. See the cultural explainer hosted by the Embassy of India.
Use “Dragon Boat Festival” when you want clear English wording, and add a personal detail only if it fits your relationship. No single greeting formula is established as obligatory by these examples.
