Drawer and door safety catches are latches or locks fitted to cabinets and drawers to slow or stop a child from reaching hazardous contents. They can reduce access to medicines, cleaners, matches, lighters, knives and other dangers when the correct device is installed securely and re-engaged after every use. They are not a substitute for supervision, safe storage or anchoring furniture against tip-over.

What drawer and door safety catches do
A safety catch creates a second barrier between a child and the contents of a cabinet or drawer. Depending on the design, it may hold the door or drawer shut from inside, require an adult-operated release, or block the handles from being pulled. The aim is access control: a toddler should not be able to open the compartment far enough to remove a hazardous item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises using safety latches and locks on cabinets and drawers that contain medicines, household cleaners, matches, cigarette lighters, knives and similar hazards. The agency also warns that a device is effective only when it is properly installed and re-engaged after use. No child-safety device is completely childproof; a determined toddler may eventually work out how to defeat or disable one.

That means a catch is one layer of protection. Keep dangerous products in their original, labeled containers, preferably in a locked location and well out of a child’s reach, even when a latch is fitted.
Child access and furniture tip-over are different hazards
A drawer catch limits opening. It does not stop a dresser, chest, bookcase or appliance from tipping if a child climbs, pulls on a drawer or places weight on an open door. CPSC recommends anchoring furniture and appliances to a wall or floor with an appropriate anti-tip device.
The distinction is significant. CPSC reported 234 clothing-storage-unit tip-over fatalities from January 2000 through April 2022, including 199 child fatalities. For 2006 through 2021, the agency estimated 84,100 related emergency-department-treated injuries, an average of about 5,300 per year. A childproof drawer lock may keep a drawer closed, but it is not an anti-tip restraint and should never be treated as one.

Types of catches and locks
Internal cabinet and drawer latches
Internal latches mount inside the cabinet or drawer front, so the hardware is mostly hidden when the furniture is closed. They are useful where appearance matters and where there is enough interior space for the catch and its release mechanism. Before buying, check whether the door or drawer has a lip, frame or unusual angle that could interfere with the latch.

Magnetic locks
Magnetic systems use an interior lock and an exterior magnetic key or release. They can keep the outside of a cabinet uncluttered, but the adult release must be stored where children cannot find it. Confirm that the magnet can reach the lock through the door thickness and that the mounting surfaces are flat enough for the supplied adhesive or screws.
External straps and handle locks
Straps or handle-mounted locks sit on the outside of the furniture and are often useful when an internal latch cannot be positioned. Measure the distance between handles, the shape of the pulls and the amount of flex in the door or drawer. An external device may be visible and can be easier for an older child to pull, so inspect it regularly for loosening or damage.
Opening-limiting designs
Some catches allow a small initial opening before stopping the door or drawer. MHI Brands describes its Safe-Lok Trap Slot design as allowing approximately one inch of opening before locking, with an adult release intended to reduce finger pinching while still restricting access. This is a manufacturer’s product description, not independent testing or proof that the design is safer than every alternative. Treat any stated opening distance as model-specific and follow that product’s instructions.

How to choose the right safety catch
| Check | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture geometry | Door or drawer overlay, frame, lip, corner angles and interior clearance | A latch can fail to engage if the two parts do not meet squarely or if a frame blocks the release. |
| Mounting surface | Finished wood, laminate, metal, glass or a textured surface; available screw depth | Adhesive may not bond reliably to every finish, while screws can damage thin panels or wiring behind a surface. |
| Installation style | Internal, magnetic or external strap/handle design | Choose the style that fits the furniture and that an adult can operate consistently. |
| Adult access | One-hand or two-hand release, required key or tool, and reset action | A difficult release encourages leaving the catch disengaged, defeating its purpose. |
| Opening behavior | Fully blocked opening or a limited gap before the lock holds | A gap can help an adult reach the release, but it must not let a child reach the contents. |
| Condition and identification | Visible cracks, weak springs, worn adhesive, missing parts and model number | Damage or an unidentifiable product makes safe performance uncertain; replace it rather than improvising a repair. |
No universal compatibility chart or independently tested ranking establishes one catch as best for every cabinet. Measure each installation location and use the manufacturer’s stated mounting method for that model.

How to install a drawer or door safety catch
- Identify the hazard. Decide which drawers and doors contain dangerous items and which device style suits each opening. Move the most hazardous items to a locked, high location while you work.
- Read the complete instructions. Confirm the model, required tools, cure time for adhesive, screw sizes and any minimum door or drawer dimensions. Do not substitute a different screw or adhesive unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
- Test the location before fixing it. Close the door or drawer slowly and mark where the latch and catch would meet. Check that a frame, hinge, drawer box or shelf will not obstruct the mechanism or release.
- Prepare the surface. For adhesive mounts, clean and dry the specified area and remove dust, grease and loose finish. Do not apply adhesive to a damp or flaking surface. For screw-mounted hardware, ensure the panel is thick enough for the supplied fastener and that drilling will not hit wiring, plumbing or another component.
- Fix both parts squarely. Install the latch and receiving catch at the prescribed distance and orientation. Keep the pieces aligned so the locking tongue enters fully rather than striking an edge.
- Allow the required set time. If the instructions specify an adhesive curing period, keep the compartment closed or unused for that period. A bond that feels firm immediately may still be too weak for repeated pulling.
- Test like a child would. Close the opening, engage the lock, and pull the door or drawer several times with moderate force. Check that it does not open far enough to reach the contents and that the hardware remains attached.
- Learn the adult release and reset. Open the compartment, then deliberately close it until the catch re-engages. Repeat this every time the compartment is used.
If a device cannot be aligned or does not hold during testing, remove the hazardous contents and use another compatible model or mounting position. Do not rely on a partly engaged latch.
Childproofing drawers in daily use
Prioritize the drawers that matter most
Start with drawers containing medicines, laundry products, dishwasher detergent, sharp tools, batteries, matches, lighters or small objects that could cause choking. A catch on a low drawer of clothing is less urgent than a secure barrier on a drawer containing knives or chemicals, but every device should still be installed and maintained correctly.
Keep the release out of reach
For magnetic systems, store the key in a consistent place that an adult can reach but a child cannot. Do not leave it on the counter beside the locked cabinet. For a strap or external lock, make sure the operating button or buckle cannot be reached by a child standing on a nearby chair or open drawer.

Inspect on a schedule
- Check screws, adhesive pads, springs, magnets, straps and receiving slots for movement or damage.
- Open and close each protected compartment to confirm full engagement.
- Look for a widening gap, a latch that catches only intermittently or a release that has become unusually easy.
- Replace a damaged or worn catch instead of gluing, bending or disabling the mechanism.
Recall checks: identify the exact model
Recall history is product-specific. A CPSC notice from 2001 covered about 1.7 million Safety 1st cabinet and drawer spring-latch packages. The agency described an exposed spring that could be released if a latch broke, reporting 27 breakage incidents and two injuries. That notice applies to the identified packages, not automatically to every spring latch sold under the same general category.
A separate CPSC notice from 2012 concerned about 900,000 Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap cabinet locks, models 48391 and 48442, manufactured between January 2004 and November 2010. CPSC reported 200 complaints that children could disengage the locks or that the locks did not adequately secure cabinets. These model numbers and manufacturing dates are essential: do not assume an unrelated model is included, and do not assume an older product is safe merely because it resembles a recalled one.
Look for the model number, manufacturing date, packaging information or instructions supplied with the catch. Check the current CPSC recall database before installing an older or second-hand device. If the identification is missing, replace the catch with a product whose model and instructions can be verified.
Common problems and fixes
The drawer opens farther than expected
Misalignment is the usual cause. Recheck the marked positions with the drawer fully closed, confirm that the catch is the correct way up and ensure the receiving slot is not cracked. Remove access to the contents until the device passes a pull test.

The adhesive mount peels away
Possible causes include grease, dust, a textured finish, insufficient curing time, excessive load or repeated twisting. Clean and dry the surface, follow the stated cure time and use the manufacturer’s approved mounting method. If the surface is unsuitable for adhesive, choose a screw-mounted or otherwise compatible design rather than adding untested tape.
An adult cannot release the lock reliably
Practice the release with the compartment empty. If it requires excessive force, catches on the frame or cannot be operated in the available space, reposition or replace it. A lock that household members routinely leave disengaged creates a predictable safety gap.
The device works, but the child still reaches the contents
Check the size of the opening permitted by the design and the child’s reach. Move the hazardous item to a locked, higher location and use a different catch if the existing gap is large enough for access. Continue supervision; no catch is completely childproof.

- Store medicines, cleaners, chemicals, matches, lighters, knives and other hazards in locked or inaccessible locations.
- Keep original labels intact and close containers immediately after use.
- Anchor dressers, chests, bookcases and televisions with appropriate anti-tip hardware; do not count a drawer lock as an anchor.
- Keep climbable objects away from furniture and remove items that invite a child to pull open a drawer.
- Teach every caregiver how each release works and require the catch to be re-engaged after use.
Drawer and door safety catches are most useful when they are matched to the furniture, installed according to the model’s instructions, tested, and treated as one layer in a broader child-safety plan.
