Jim Davis ranks first at an estimated $800 million on the available 2026 list, followed by Matt Groening at $600 million and Todd McFarlane at $300 million. These are indicative third-party estimates from Nichesss, whose valuation method is not disclosed—not audited wealth figures. The ranking also uses “cartoonist” broadly, combining newspaper-strip artists with comic-book creators, animators, television writers and film producers.

Who is the richest cartoonist?

Jim Davis, creator of Garfield, is the highest-ranked name in the available 2026 estimate list, with an estimated net worth of $800 million. His commercial reach extends well beyond newspaper-strip fees: Garfield syndication, licensing, merchandise, television and film have all contributed to the character’s long-running business.

Matt Groening follows with an estimated $600 million. His wealth is tied to The Simpsons and Futurama, plus television production, syndication, books and licensing. Todd McFarlane is third at an estimated $300 million, reflecting the value of Spawn and a creator-owned publishing and merchandise operation.

The 10 richest cartoonists by estimated net worth

The figures below are the 2026 estimates published by Nichesss. Because the database does not disclose its valuation methodology, the ranking should be read as an indicative list rather than a directly comparable league table.

How to interpret the ranking

These are estimates, not audited balances

An estimated net worth is a calculated approximation of assets, business interests and income, less liabilities. Nichesss does not publish the assumptions behind these numbers, so there is no reliable way to test whether every creator was valued on the same basis. Private-company stakes, trusts, taxes, debts and estate structures can materially change the result.

The list uses a deliberately broad definition of cartoonist

Davis, Watterson and Groening fit the everyday idea of a cartoonist. McFarlane is principally a comic-book creator, while Henson, Whedon, Simon, Judge and Geisel are associated with animation, characters or illustrated books. Donner is a film director-producer rather than a traditional newspaper cartoonist. Their inclusion reflects the source’s broad category, not a claim that their careers are equivalent.

Living creators, estates and posthumous businesses are different comparisons

A living creator’s estimate may include current ownership and future earning potential. An estate can continue earning from a catalog long after the creator’s death. Those situations should not be treated as interchangeable measurements of personal cash wealth.

Why licensing and ownership matter more than strip fees

Recurring character licensing

A successful character can generate royalties from apparel, toys, stationery, games and other products for decades. The creator’s negotiating position is strongest when the creator or a controlled company retains intellectual-property rights rather than receiving only a one-time fee.

Syndication and publishing

Newspaper syndication can place a strip in many markets at once. Collections, boxed sets and translated editions add another sales channel. The underlying work can therefore earn repeatedly without a new original panel being sold to each reader.

Television and film adaptations

Screen adaptations create licensing fees, production income, syndication revenue and new audiences for the original characters. Groening’s television franchises illustrate how a strip- or drawing-based idea can become a global entertainment business.

Creator-owned publishing

McFarlane’s position demonstrates the upside of retaining control over a comic property and building publishing and merchandise around it. Ownership can increase both the reward and the financial risk compared with working only for a publisher or studio.

Charles M. Schulz: the important comparison outside the top 10

Charles M. Schulz is not included in Nichesss’s ten-name list, but Peanuts is essential context for understanding long-term cartoon wealth. The Charles M. Schulz Museum records that Schulz created Peanuts, completed the final original strip shortly before his death in 2000 and spent nearly fifty years building the world of Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Penguin Random House records that the first daily strip appeared on October 2, 1950, and continues to list Peanuts books.

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Schulz’s wealth at $200 million at death and claims more than $1 billion in later Peanuts earnings. Those are undisclosed-methodology third-party figures, not audited estate accounts, so they should not be inserted into the same table as if they were measured on identical terms.

“His ambition from a young age was to be a cartoonist.”

Are Matt Groening and Bill Watterson richer than Charles Schulz?

On the available point estimates, Groening’s $600 million and Watterson’s $100 million are higher than the $200 million Celebrity Net Worth estimate for Schulz’s wealth at death. That is not an apples-to-apples verdict: Schulz’s figure concerns an estate at a particular time, while the Groening and Watterson figures are current-style third-party estimates for living or recently living creators, and each source uses undisclosed methods.

Simon & Schuster identifies Groening as the creator of The Simpsons and describes the show as a global entertainment franchise. Its catalog also includes Bartman: The Hero’s Handbook and other Groening books, showing how television characters can support a physical publishing business as well as screen income.

Where Walt Disney fits—and why he is not in this list

Walt Disney is often named in conversations about the richest cartoon creators, but he is not part of the supplied ten-name estimate ranking. D23’s official biography describes his early work as an advertising cartoonist, his role as an animation pioneer and creator of Mickey Mouse, and his founding of Disneyland.

Disney’s fortune was built through ownership of a studio and a much larger entertainment infrastructure, not solely through payment for drawing cartoons. Including him in a narrow cartoonist table would therefore require a separate, consistently sourced historical valuation rather than a guessed comparison with the 2026 estimates above.

What readers can take from the numbers

  • Jim Davis leads the available 2026 estimate list at $800 million, with Groening and McFarlane next.
  • The largest fortunes generally combine intellectual-property ownership with licensing, publishing, television, film or merchandise.
  • A creator’s category matters: a newspaper cartoonist, animation producer and film director do not earn through the same business model.
  • Third-party estimates are useful for orientation, but undisclosed methods prevent precise ranking claims.
  • Peanuts shows why a strip can remain commercially productive for decades after its creator’s death.

A useful physical introduction to the Peanuts catalog

For readers who want to examine the strip that made Schulz a defining figure, Penguin Random House maintains a current catalog of Peanuts books and collections. A collected edition is a more direct way to study the original strip, its pacing and its character licensing legacy than relying only on summaries of the franchise.
