Verdict: The Dreo 712S is a tall evaporative air cooler that combines a fan, water-based cooling and humidification with app, voice, touch and remote controls. It can make dry, ventilated spaces feel more comfortable, but it is not an air conditioner and should not be expected to deliver air-conditioning-level temperature reduction. Dreo lists a 70-watt draw, a 6-liter tank, 85-degree oscillation and two included ice packs. Its own guidance says to place the rear of the unit toward an open window or door because excess indoor humidity reduces cooling performance. What the Dreo 712S actually is
The 712S is an evaporative cooler. A fan moves room air across a damp cooling medium; some water evaporates, and that phase change can make the moving air feel cooler. The process also adds moisture to the air. That is fundamentally different from an air conditioner, which removes heat from indoor air and rejects it outside. Dreo’s product FAQ explicitly says the 712S is not an air conditioner.
That distinction determines where the 712S works well. In a dry room with some ventilation, evaporation can improve comfort while the fan provides a noticeable breeze. In a humid, closed room, the air has less capacity to absorb additional water. Cooling effectiveness then falls, and continued humidification can make the room feel clammy. Dreo therefore recommends positioning the cooler with its back toward an open window or door so humid air can leave and fresh air can enter. This is a manufacturer operating instruction, not an independent measurement of temperature reduction.

The most accurate mental model is “a fan with evaporative assistance and humidification,” not “a small portable AC.” If you need a controlled room temperature regardless of outdoor humidity, use an appropriately sized air conditioner instead.

How evaporative cooling affects real-world comfort
Dry air: the best-case environment
Evaporative cooling has the greatest potential when indoor relative humidity is low enough for water to evaporate readily. Place the unit where its airflow reaches the people who need relief, while keeping an exhaust path through a window or door behind it. The moving air can feel cooler on skin even when the room’s measured temperature changes only modestly.
Humid air: diminishing returns
When humidity is already high, the 712S cannot evaporate as much water. You may still use it as a conventional fan, but the cooling mode and humidifying function will provide less benefit. Closing every window and door while adding moisture is the setup most likely to disappoint.

Why a measured temperature promise would be misleading
The available product information does not establish a tested room-temperature drop, room-coverage rating, noise level or operating-cost comparison with an air conditioner. Setup: a practical first-use procedure
- Choose a ventilated position. Stand the cooler on a level, water-resistant floor with its rear facing an open window or door. Leave enough clearance for the intake and exhaust paths, and aim the front toward the occupied area.
- Inspect the tank and pad. Confirm that the water tank and cooling pad are seated correctly before adding water. The manufacturer’s support materials are collected in the Dreo product-support catalog.
- Add water between the marks. Fill above the minimum line so the pump can operate, but do not exceed the maximum level. Dreo specifically warns against overfilling.
- Install the ice packs if desired. The box includes two ice packs. Freeze them according to their instructions, then place them in the tank when you want stronger cooling assistance. Ice is an accessory to the evaporative process, not a substitute for ventilation.
- Enable the appropriate mode. Select fan for air movement, cooling for water-assisted airflow, or humidifying when adding moisture is the goal. Dreo advises enabling humidification for its recommended cooling setup.
- Set speed and oscillation. Use the touch controls, remote, app or voice control to choose a fan speed and the 85-degree oscillation range. Start with a moderate speed and adjust based on comfort and noise.
- Check the airflow path. After several minutes, make sure air is leaving the front and that the rear remains oriented toward the ventilation opening. If the room becomes muggy, increase ventilation or switch to fan mode.

Controls and day-to-day usability
The 712S offers more control methods than a basic floor fan. You can operate it from the built-in touch panel, the included remote, a smartphone app or voice commands. A timer and LED-light control are useful in a bedroom or office where a bright display is distracting. Adjustable speed and oscillation let you choose between a focused stream of air and wider circulation.
Smart control does not change the unit’s physical limits. An app can start cooling before you enter a room, but it cannot remove moisture or make the 712S perform like a compressor-based AC. Keep the remote available for local control if Wi-Fi or app access is unavailable, and verify that the cooler is safely filled before scheduling repeated operation.
Water, ice and the recurring work of ownership
A 6-liter tank reduces the frequency of refills compared with a very small personal cooler, but runtime depends on mode, fan speed, ambient humidity and how much water evaporates. Evaporative cooling consumes water by design. If you run it for long periods, plan to check the level rather than assuming the tank will last all day.

The two included ice packs are convenient for initial use. They will need to be refrozen between sessions, and the cooling effect will diminish as they warm. Water and dust maintenance is essential because the appliance continuously handles moisture and air. Dreo recommends the following schedule:
- Every two weeks: Clean the water tank with citric acid to help prevent mold growth. Empty the tank, follow the product’s cleaning directions, rinse thoroughly and refill with clean water.
- Monthly: Rinse the cooling pad with a clean towel to remove dust buildup. Allow parts to drain and dry as directed before reassembly.
- Whenever you refill: Keep the water below the maximum mark and make sure the tank is securely returned to the unit.
- When storing: Drain remaining water and dry the tank and pad so stagnant moisture is not left inside the cooler.
Citric acid and a clean cloth are generic maintenance supplies; Dreo does not require a particular brand in the cited instructions. If you notice odor, visible buildup or reduced airflow, clean the water-contact parts before increasing the fan speed.
Troubleshooting the “not cool enough” complaint
The air feels like ordinary fan air
- Confirm that the tank is above the minimum line.
- Verify that cooling or humidifying mode is enabled rather than fan-only mode.
- Place the rear of the cooler toward an open window or door.
- Use the included ice packs after freezing them fully.
- Clean the cooling pad if dust has accumulated.
The room feels damp or clammy
Increase ventilation first. Open the window or door behind the unit, reduce or stop humidifying, and use fan mode if necessary. Continuing to add water in a sealed, already-humid room addresses the symptom in the wrong direction.
The indicator blinks after adding water
Dreo’s guidance is to check that the tank is securely returned, the water is at or above the minimum mark and humidification has been re-enabled. Re-seat the tank rather than forcing it, and do not fill beyond the maximum line.

Airflow has weakened
Inspect the intake and outlet for obstructions, clean the cooling pad according to the monthly schedule and check that the oscillation setting has not redirected airflow away from you. If the problem persists, consult the manufacturer’s support materials rather than dismantling electrical components.

Dreo lists the 712S at 70 watts. At a constant rated draw, that is 0.07 kilowatt-hours per hour of operation; your actual consumption can differ with speed, mode and cycling. To estimate a cost, multiply the appliance’s kilowatt-hours by your utility’s price per kilowatt-hour and by the hours you actually run it.
That arithmetic is not a bill-savings guarantee. No source here provides a measured energy cost, a controlled comparison with an air conditioner or evidence that a particular household’s bill will fall. A 70-watt listing is simply the appliance’s rated electrical input. Your total cooling cost also depends on whether the 712S replaces another appliance, runs alongside AC, or operates for additional hours because it feels comfortable.
Dreo suggests combining the cooler with an AC unit to circulate air more efficiently. Treat that as the manufacturer’s usage advice, not as an independently demonstrated reduction in electricity use. If bill reduction is your priority, measure your own runtime and utility rate rather than relying on a headline wattage.

Choose the 712S over a plain fan when you want water-assisted airflow, humidification and smart controls and you can provide ventilation. Choose an air conditioner when maintaining a target room temperature and controlling humidity matter more than low listed wattage. Choose a basic fan when you want the least maintenance and no water handling.
