A successful dressing room makeover starts before you buy a wardrobe or open a paint can. Measure the room, record every fixed feature, edit your clothing inventory, and then design storage and lighting around what must fit. Once the plan is proven on paper, paint becomes the finish that makes the room feel intentional rather than crowded.

This guide takes you from an empty room to a workable dressing space, with decisions for compact rooms, larger rooms, modular wardrobes, shoe and accessory storage, integrated LEDs, and safe electrical work.

1. Measure the room before choosing anything

Begin with a measured drawing, not a shopping list. Record the room’s length, width, and ceiling height, then measure each wall separately. Note the location and size of doors, windows, radiators, vents, switches, outlets, trim, pipes, and any sloped or boxed-in areas. Include the direction and clearance of every door swing. A wardrobe that fits the wall on paper may block a door, cover an outlet, or prevent a vent from working.

This Old House’s closet-planning guidance emphasizes accurate measurements and documenting obstacles. Follow that principle even for a small spare room. Measure in more than one place if walls are uneven, and use the smallest usable dimension when deciding whether a frame or cabinet will fit. Keep a written record and a simple scaled sketch; you will use both when checking manufacturer dimensions and laying out paint boundaries.

Mark clearances, not just wall lengths

  • Leave the full operating path for the entrance door and any wardrobe doors or drawers.
  • Keep heating and ventilation equipment accessible and unobstructed.
  • Mark outlets and switches so storage does not hide them.
  • Identify the wall where a mirror, dressing surface, or laundry basket could sit without narrowing the main route.
  • Check ceiling height against the tallest frame, cornice, and light fitting you are considering.

If the room has unusual angles, make cardboard or painter’s-tape outlines of the proposed cabinets on the floor. Walk through the taped plan with drawers and doors imagined open. This quick test reveals circulation problems before delivery or assembly.

2. Inventory what the room must hold

Storage should follow your belongings, not the other way around. Sort everything intended for the room into hanging garments, folded clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry and other accessories, laundry, luggage, and seasonal items. Count bulky categories and identify pieces that need special treatment: long dresses and coats need uninterrupted hanging height, trousers benefit from a dedicated hanger, and knitwear is usually better folded than packed on a rail.

Separate the inventory into daily, occasional, and seasonal use. Daily items deserve the easiest reach. Occasional pieces can go higher or farther from the entrance, while seasonal items can occupy labeled boxes or baskets on upper shelves. Editing at this stage is part of the makeover: remove donations, repairs, and items that belong elsewhere before calculating storage capacity.

Turn the inventory into a storage brief

  • Long hanging: reserve a full-height section for coats, dresses, and other garments that crease when folded.
  • Short hanging: use a separate rail for shirts, jackets, skirts, or trousers when your collection allows two levels.
  • Folded storage: choose shelves or drawers for knitwear, denim, T-shirts, and workout clothing.
  • Shoes: decide whether pairs will sit on shelves, angled inserts, or another organizer, and allow room for taller footwear.
  • Accessories: plan baskets, boxes, or small drawers so belts, scarves, bags, and jewelry do not consume hanging space.
  • Seasonal storage: reserve upper shelves or closed boxes and label them by category or season.

Write down approximate quantities for each group. Exact numbers are more useful than a vague goal such as “more storage,” and they make it easier to compare a modular wardrobe system with a more tailored installation.

3. Choose a layout that fits the room and the inventory

A compact room generally benefits from one efficient storage wall, shallow components where available, and a clear central path. A larger room may accommodate storage on two or three sides, a dressing surface, or a freestanding mirror, but the correct arrangement depends on your measured clearances and the inventory you created. Do not commit to a layout merely because it looks attractive in a photograph.

Single-wall arrangement

One continuous run keeps the opposite wall open for a mirror, hamper, or bench. It is often the simplest option when the room is narrow or when the door opens inward. Put the most frequently used hanging and folded storage in the easiest-to-reach section, and use the upper zone for seasonal boxes.

Opposing walls

Storage on two facing walls increases capacity but reduces the aisle. Confirm the combined depth of both sides and the space needed to open drawers or doors at the same time. Keep a wider passage near the entrance and avoid placing deep cabinets where they create a pinch point.

L-shaped or three-sided plan

An L-shaped arrangement can use a corner efficiently while preserving one open wall. A three-sided plan creates substantial capacity but requires careful door-swing and circulation checks. Reserve one section for long garments instead of filling every wall with identical short rails.

Freestanding versus modular components

Freestanding pieces are easier to move or reuse if you expect to change the room. A modular wardrobe system provides coordinated frames and interior organizers that can be configured around your inventory. A more tailored installation can make better use of unusual dimensions but may require more site work and fixed attachment. Compare each option on fit, storage mix, assembly, attachment, and compatibility with the organizers and lighting you intend to use.

4. Use a planner before you purchase

Build the proposed room in a wardrobe or room-planning tool before ordering. IKEA’s official planning page describes planners for visualizing and designing storage solutions and says, “Plan your dream kitchen, perfect home office, wardrobe storage system, and more.” Use the tool to test frame widths, rail positions, shelves, drawers, baskets, and shoe inserts rather than relying on a single sketch.

  1. Enter the room’s measured dimensions and place doors, windows, switches, outlets, vents, and other fixed features.
  2. Lay out the largest storage components first, maintaining the clearances you recorded.
  3. Assign each hanging, folded, shoe, accessory, and seasonal category to a specific zone.
  4. Open the simulated drawers and doors where the planner allows it, and check that two adjacent units can be used together.
  5. Save or print the plan, then compare every frame and interior component with the manufacturer’s current dimensions for your region.

A planner is a design aid, not a guarantee that an installation will fit. Recheck the physical measurements, skirting-board depth, wall straightness, and delivery dimensions before placing an order.

5. Build the storage mix around real use

Uniform shelves rarely serve a full wardrobe well. Combine hanging rails, shelves, drawers, baskets, boxes, and shoe organizers so each category has a logical home. Keep everyday folded pieces between comfortable reach heights, place less-used items higher, and avoid making a deep shelf so large that stacks disappear at the back.

Hanging sections

Separate long and short hanging where possible. A double-rail section can increase capacity for short garments, while a dedicated trouser hanger keeps pairs visible and reduces pile-up. Leave enough vertical room for the longest items in your inventory; compressing them under a shelf defeats the purpose of hanging storage.

Shelves and drawers

Open shelves make contents visible and adaptable, but folded stacks can look untidy when overfilled. Drawers protect smaller items and make categories easy to pull out, although they require space to open fully. Use the combination that matches your habits: shelves for frequently selected stacks, drawers for undergarments or accessories, and boxes or baskets for flexible groupings.

Shoes, bags, and accessories

Measure your largest shoes and bags before selecting inserts or shelves. Keep pairs together and give tall boots enough vertical clearance. Baskets and boxes are useful for scarves, belts, and seasonal accessories; labels prevent forgotten items at the back of a high shelf. A hook or narrow rail near the entrance can hold a frequently used bag without consuming a full hanging bay.

6. Paint the room as part of the storage plan

Paint after the layout is resolved but before final installation wherever possible. Empty walls are easier to prepare, cut in, and protect, and you avoid painting around every bracket. If existing wardrobes must remain, mask them carefully and protect floors, rails, and drawer interiors.

Select a finish for the room’s conditions

Choose a washable interior finish for walls that will be touched by clothing, bags, or hands. A lower-sheen finish can hide minor wall irregularities, while a slightly higher sheen is easier to wipe; use the product label and your tolerance for visible surface texture as the deciding factors. Ceilings and trim can use coordinated products suited to those surfaces.

Sample the color on more than one wall. Wardrobe interiors and LED fixtures can change how a color appears, and daylight may vary dramatically from one side of the room to another. Observe the sample at morning, afternoon, and evening before committing. If the room is small, a consistent light tone can maintain visual continuity, while a deeper accent wall can define a mirror or dressing surface. These are aesthetic options, not rules: the right choice is the one that supports your clothing colors and the atmosphere you want.

Prepare, prime, and apply

  1. Remove loose paint, fill holes, and sand repairs smooth.
  2. Clean dust and residue so the new coating bonds to a sound surface.
  3. Prime repaired areas or the entire wall when the existing surface is glossy, stained, or dramatically different in color.
  4. Cut in edges, then roll the main wall in consistent sections, following the product’s coverage and recoat directions.
  5. Allow the coating to cure as directed before pushing cabinets against it or attaching hardware.

Use painter’s tape only on a properly prepared surface and remove it according to the paint manufacturer’s guidance. Keep ventilation adequate while painting, and protect any electrical components from drips.

7. Treat wardrobe lighting as a system decision

Integrated lighting can make shelves, drawers, and hanging areas easier to see, but it is not a universal add-on. IKEA’s wardrobe guidance discusses LED lights, drivers, and power supplies, while its Canada guide describes a specific wardrobe-lighting system. Components may be designed for particular frames or connectors, so verify compatibility for the exact wardrobe, light, driver, and power supply sold in your region.

Plan the lighting locations

  • Light the hanging zone so garments are not hidden in the cabinet’s shadow.
  • Place shelf or drawer lighting where it illuminates contents without shining directly into your eyes.
  • Keep switches or sensors accessible after doors and drawers are installed.
  • Confirm cable routes before fixing frames to the wall.

Do not assume that a light from one wardrobe family will plug into another. Check the current installation instructions, connector type, driver capacity, and regional electrical specifications for every component. Product names, stock, and compatibility can change, so verify them immediately before purchase.

8. Plan installation and electrical work safely

Many wardrobe systems require assembly and wall attachment. Identify the wall construction and use the fixing method specified for that surface. Secure tall units as directed, keep fasteners away from hidden pipes or cables, and do not improvise a load-bearing connection when the instructions call for a particular anchor.

If the makeover adds an outlet, relocates a switch, or installs a new hard-wired fixture, use a licensed electrician. This Old House gives the same advice for new fixtures and outlets. Follow local electrical and building requirements; do not treat a plug-in light as permission to alter fixed wiring yourself.

9. A purchase checklist that prevents expensive mistakes

  • Recheck every wall, ceiling, door-swing, trim, outlet, switch, vent, and radiator measurement.
  • Compare the room plan with the inventory quantities for long hanging, short hanging, folded clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and seasonal storage.
  • Confirm the assembled dimensions, not only the individual frame dimensions.
  • Verify that drawers and doors can open without blocking the entrance or another unit.
  • Check the installation method, wall-fixing requirements, delivery access, and assembly tools.
  • Match every organizer to the selected wardrobe system and frame width.
  • For lighting, confirm the exact LED, driver, power supply, connectors, controls, and regional instructions.
  • Check current stock, dimensions, finish, and return conditions in your market immediately before ordering.
  • Keep paint, primer, masking materials, and floor protection on the schedule so installation does not damage a fresh finish.

10. Common makeover problems and practical fixes

The room feels crowded

Remove one storage run or reduce component depth before adding more organizers. Recheck door swings and the central route with drawers open. Capacity is not useful if you cannot move or dress comfortably.

Clothes disappear in deep shelves

Reduce stack height, add pull-out drawers or baskets, and reserve deep shelves for labeled seasonal boxes. Grouping by use is more effective than filling every available surface.

Long garments drag on the floor

Measure the longest items again and move them to a full-height bay. Do not rely on a nominal frame height without checking the actual rail position and shelf thickness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lighting does not work after assembly

Switch off power, then check the system’s installation sequence, connectors, driver capacity, and power-supply connection against the current instructions. Do not mix components merely because the plugs appear similar; contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician when the fault involves fixed wiring.

Fresh paint shows marks or damage

Allow the coating to cure for the period stated on its label before installing units. Use clean protective pads during assembly and keep tools from rubbing against the walls.

11. The finished room should support a daily routine

Place the items you reach for first where your hand naturally goes: everyday garments at eye level, frequently worn shoes near the entrance, and accessories in a single visible zone. Keep a small amount of empty capacity so new purchases do not immediately create piles. Review the room after several weeks and move organizers when your actual routine differs from the original plan.

The best dressing room makeover is therefore a sequence: measure and document the room, edit and count your belongings, test a layout, choose a storage mix, paint with access in mind, and add only lighting components proven compatible with the selected system. That order protects your budget and leaves you with a room that is attractive because it works.
