Drizzle stitch is a raised embroidery stitch in the cast-on family, attached to the fabric at one end. To make it, cast loops of thread onto a needle positioned beside the stitch’s base, then draw the threaded needle through the loops and back through the fabric. The loop count controls the stitch’s length; thread thickness affects its weight.
What is a drizzle stitch?
The Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery International Guild describes drizzle stitch as “a version of the cast-on buttonhole stitch.” It forms a dimensional knot similar to, but not identical with, a bullion stitch. The stitch rises above the fabric and may twist slightly, making it useful for textured details such as flower centers.
Unlike a line of embroidery secured at both ends, a drizzle stitch is attached at one end. For a longer line that needs to stay anchored at both ends, couch over the drizzle stitch to secure it.
Materials and needle choice
- Needle: A darner, milliner’s, or straw needle is suitable. American Patchwork & Quilting lists a No. 1 darner; the Guild recommends a milliner’s needle or darner for easier threading. The Textile Research Centre recommends a straw needle because its eye is the same diameter as its shaft, which helps the stitch slide off.
- Thread: Rayon is a usual choice, and perle cotton is another documented option. The American Patchwork & Quilting tutorial lists Perle cotton No. 3 and No. 8. Thread thickness affects the finished stitch’s weight, so choose it for the effect you want rather than treating one fiber or size as mandatory.
- Support: A pillow or pincushion beneath the fabric can steady the needle point while you form the loops.
These options are described by the Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery International Guild, American Patchwork & Quilting, and the Textile Research Centre, Leiden; the sources do not provide standardized performance comparisons.

How to make a drizzle stitch
- Bring the thread up through the fabric at the stitch’s starting point.
- Push the needle point back into the fabric very close to where the thread emerged. Leave the needle in place, angled so it can hold the cast-on loops. Place a pillow or pincushion beneath the work if you need support for the point.
- Unthread the needle. Cast loops of working thread onto the needle, keeping the tension controlled.
- When you have the desired number of loops, rethread the needle. Hold the loops in place as you draw the needle and thread through them and back through the fabric.
- Pull only firmly enough to settle the stitch, then secure the thread on the reverse.
The defining maneuver is casting the loops onto a needle anchored beside the stitch’s base, then pulling the threaded needle through those loops. A finger-loop method is also demonstrated in the American Patchwork & Quilting tutorial.

Adjust length with loop count
More or fewer cast-on loops change the stitch’s length. Begin with a modest number, then adjust on subsequent stitches to suit the motif; the cited instructions do not establish a universal loop count.

Choose how it sits
Plain cast-on loops form a spiraling drizzle. An up-down cast-on variation makes a firmer stitch that does not spiral, according to the Guild’s instructions.

Secure a long stitch if needed
For a long drizzle stitch that should be held down at both ends, couch over it. This adds an anchoring thread across the raised stitch rather than changing the cast-on method.
