For most U.S. homes, professional dryer-vent cleaning is a $100–$200 job, with published 2025–2026 guides putting average estimates around $130–$150. A short, accessible vent that exits through a side wall usually costs less than a long run, roof outlet, upper-floor installation, severe blockage, inspection, repair, or wildlife removal. Treat those figures as budgeting benchmarks—not a guaranteed local price—and get the exact scope and extra charges in writing before work begins.

How much does it cost to clean a dryer vent?

Current U.S. consumer-cost guides do not agree on one universal price because they use different estimating and survey methods. Taken together, they support a practical planning range of $100 to $200 for a routine professional cleaning. The table shows what each source reports and how its figure was obtained.

Source and date Published estimate Important qualification
HomeAdvisor, updated June 17, 2026 $145 average; $104–$188 typical range Surveyed-customer estimates; location and accessibility affect the quote.
Angi, updated July 8, 2026 $145 average Its location table also places basement and first-floor work below second-floor and roof access.
Fixr, updated January 31, 2025 $150 national average; $100–$200 range Identifies duct length, clog severity, and vent location as major variables.
HomeGuide, cost page dated April 29, 2024 $130 average; $80–$185 range Based on 1,184 project costs reported by HomeGuide members; older data than the 2025–2026 guides.

These are national U.S. estimates, not government statistics or a quote for a particular city. Local labor rates, the duct’s route, access equipment, and the condition of the exhaust system can move a real invoice outside the headline range. A low advertised price may cover only brushing an easily reached section, while a higher quote may include access, inspection, or obstruction removal. Compare identical scopes rather than choosing the lowest number.

What a standard cleaning appointment includes

A routine visit normally removes lint and debris from the dryer connection, the exhaust duct, and the outdoor termination. The technician may use a rotary brush, high-powered vacuum, or both, then confirm that air can leave the building. The exact process varies with the equipment and the installation.

Questions to ask before scheduling

  • Does the base price cover the complete run from the dryer to the exterior hood, or only the accessible end?
  • Is an airflow or visual inspection included?
  • Are roof access, ladder work, or upper-floor equipment charged separately?
  • What happens if the technician finds a nest, packed lint, damaged duct, or a crushed section?
  • Will repair, rerouting, replacement, or pest removal require separate approval?
  • Is there a minimum service charge, and does it apply if the vent cannot be cleaned safely?

Ask for those answers on the written estimate. HomeAdvisor specifically notes that inspection, obstruction removal, repairs, replacement, and pest work can be separate line items; its examples are estimates, not proof that every dryer needs those services.

Why some dryer vents cost more to clean

Exit location and safe access

Basement and first-floor outlets are generally the least expensive in the HomeAdvisor and Angi location tables. Second-floor outlets cost more, and roof exits are commonly the highest-priced category because the technician may need ladders, roof-safety equipment, additional setup time, or a second worker. HomeAdvisor lists example ranges of $80–$150 for basement or first-floor work, $110–$185 for second-floor work, and $150–$250 for roof exits. Those are that publisher’s surveyed estimates, not fixed regional rates.

Length, bends, and number of connections

A long duct takes more time to reach and clean than a short, straight run. Multiple turns, transitions between materials, tight framing cavities, or a termination hidden behind an appliance can slow the job and make it harder to verify that the entire passage is clear. Fixr and HomeAdvisor both identify duct length or layout as cost considerations.

Severity of the blockage

Loose lint is usually simpler to remove than a dense plug, construction debris, a collapsed liner, or a bird or rodent nest. HomeAdvisor reports higher estimates where obstructions are present. A responsible technician should explain what was found and give a separate price for removal or repair before doing work beyond the agreed cleaning.

Work beyond cleaning

Cleaning cannot correct a leaking joint, crushed flexible duct, incorrect termination, or a vent that does not discharge outdoors. Inspection, rerouting, replacement, structural access, and wildlife exclusion may each change the bill. Do not approve a repair solely because a technician says it is urgent; ask what symptom it addresses, whether the dryer can be used safely in the meantime, and for the added cost in writing.

How to compare local quotes fairly

  1. Describe the installation. Tell each provider the dryer’s floor, approximate duct length, number of stories, and whether the outlet is on a wall or roof. Photos of the dryer connection and exterior hood can reduce guesswork.
  2. Request an itemized scope. Have the estimate identify cleaning method, portions of the duct included, inspection, access assumptions, and disposal.
  3. Separate routine work from contingencies. Ask for “if needed” prices for nests, heavy blockage, duct replacement, rerouting, or roof access instead of accepting an open-ended authorization.
  4. Confirm the final-price policy. Find out whether the quoted amount is fixed, a starting price, or hourly, and whether tax, travel, ladder, or roof charges are extra.
  5. Compare like for like. A $99 quote for a reachable wall outlet is not cheaper than a $180 quote that includes a long roof run and airflow verification; they are different jobs.
  6. Get completion details. Ask what the technician will report if airflow remains poor and whether any recommended repair is documented with photos.

When poor drying means the vent needs attention

Longer drying times, a hot laundry room, weak airflow at the outdoor hood, or a dryer’s model-specific low-airflow alert are reasons to check the exhaust path. GE Appliances says some dryers display a “Check Vent” alert and advises cleaning the vent when it appears; the alert is not present on every model. An alert or slow cycle indicates restricted airflow may exist, but it does not by itself prove a particular defect. Check the lint screen, duct, exterior hood, and the appliance manual before authorizing replacement.

How often should you clean a dryer vent?

There is no single interval that fits every installation. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to clean the lint screen before or after each load, clean the exhaust vent periodically, verify that exhaust exits outdoors, and keep the dryer area clear. GE Appliances’ general dryer guidance recommends inspecting and cleaning its exhaust duct at least once a year. Use the manual for your model and shorten the interval if drying performance declines, the duct is unusually long, the household does many loads, or an alert appears.

After cleaning, continue the basic checks: the outdoor hood should open while the dryer runs, the duct should not be crushed, and lint should not accumulate around joints. The U.S. Fire Administration advises checking for a damaged, restricted, or crushed vent system and confirming that the outdoor covering opens during operation.

DIY cleaning: when it is reasonable and how to do it safely

A do-it-yourself cleaning can be appropriate when the dryer and duct are readily accessible, the run is short enough to reach safely, and the manufacturer’s instructions permit it. GE names an appliance brush or vacuum-hose attachment as possible cleaning tools. A dryer-vent brush kit is a tool category, not a guarantee that every configuration can be cleaned safely; long concealed runs, roof outlets, suspected damage, and wildlife blockage call for qualified help.

Accessible-vent procedure

  1. Read the dryer manual. Confirm the approved duct materials, disconnect procedure, and any model-specific warnings.
  2. Shut down power. Unplug an electric dryer. For a gas dryer, follow the manual’s shutoff and ventilation instructions; if you cannot safely disconnect it, stop and hire a technician.
  3. Move the dryer carefully. Avoid kinking or crushing the duct and protect the floor. Do not work on a roof or unstable ladder without proper training and equipment.
  4. Disconnect the duct. Loosen the clamp at the dryer outlet and, where accessible, at the wall or hood connection.
  5. Vacuum loose lint. Use a suitable vacuum attachment at both accessible ends. Do not push debris deeper into a concealed cavity.
  6. Brush only within the tool’s reach and instructions. Keep extensions aligned so they do not separate inside the duct. Stop if the brush catches, the duct shifts, or you encounter a nest, water, sharp metal, or a collapsed section.
  7. Inspect the termination. Confirm the exterior hood is clear and its flap moves freely. GE advises checking that no wildlife is nesting in the duct or hood.
  8. Reconnect and test. Secure clamps, restore power, run a test cycle, and verify that the outdoor flap opens and airflow improves. If it does not, discontinue use until the restriction is diagnosed.

Do not substitute a brush for an inspection when access is difficult. A tool can remove lint while leaving a disconnected joint, damaged liner, or incorrect outlet undiscovered.

Duct materials and installation safety

CPSC advises replacing plastic or foil accordion-style ducting with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Flexible plastic or foil can trap lint more readily and may kink or become crushed. The correct material and maximum length depend on the dryer, installation, and local requirements, so follow the appliance manual and applicable building rules rather than assuming every metal duct arrangement is acceptable.

Never vent a dryer into an attic, crawlspace, garage, wall cavity, or other enclosed area; the exhaust should terminate outdoors. Keep combustible storage away from the appliance and maintain the clearances specified by the manufacturer. If the duct is inaccessible or the installation appears noncompliant, have a qualified professional assess it instead of opening walls or climbing onto a roof without the right equipment.

Why cleaning matters: the fire risk in context

Lint can restrict airflow, allowing excessive heat to build up. CPSC’s official alert states: Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. The alert carries publication and revision markings including 2003 and 2012, so that sentence should be understood as an established safety instruction, not a newly dated announcement.

CPSC reported an average of 6,900 residential clothes-dryer fires annually, with fewer than five deaths, 220 injuries, and $91.0 million in property damage per year during 2005–2007. Those figures are historical estimates from its 2010 report, not a current annual count. They explain why airflow and lint maintenance matter, but they do not predict the risk for a particular household.

Practical decision checklist

  • Choose a professional quote for roof or upper-floor exits, long or sharply bent runs, concealed ducts, recurring airflow problems, suspected damage, or nests.
  • Consider limited DIY work only for an accessible setup that the manual supports and that can be disconnected, vacuumed, brushed, and reassembled without unsafe lifting or climbing.
  • Pause the job if you find a crushed or disconnected duct, water, animal nesting, burning smell, damaged wiring, or an obstruction you cannot remove without force.
  • Keep records of the cleaning date, observed condition, photos, and any repair recommendation so you can identify recurring restrictions.

The useful question is not simply “What is the cheapest dryer-vent cleaning?” It is “What complete scope will restore safe airflow for this installation, and what will it cost if an obstruction or defect is found?”
